“I am bored” She looked out the window and sighed as the rain beat against the panes.
“Come now Katie, let us play cards.”
“Oh really, Ray, you are so simple! I am not as easy to please as you. I am tired of the same old games.”
The raven-haired youth sat down in front of her. He was handsome and quite eager to please his dear friend. Perhaps too eager. “What is it? You have not been yourself since your return. Did something happen at Aunt Margaret’s? Did some man steal your heart away from me?”
“That is absurd!” Katie folded her hands in her lap, “You never had my heart to begin with. How could I love a boy who hides away at the first sign of a monster outside of town?”
Ray appeared wounded, his forehead wrinkling and his eyes dropping to the floor. “I have told you time and again, I stayed home to protect my sisters. Father was out patrolling so who else would watch over them? Do not be so cruel, you know I adore you.”
“And you know I will not be married so quit your wooing games. I like our relationship just fine as it is now. I have an idea! Let us go outside and dance in the rain.” She stood up and grabbed his hands.
“And you call me simple! We are too old for that! Tis a child’s mind you have. What would your brother think if you ruin that dress?”
“Oh, who cares about that? You do not do anything spontaneous, Ray, and that is one of the many reasons why we would never work.” She gathered her skirts and ran out of the house. Ray didn’t follow and she was glad. Katherine wanted to be alone.
She skipped out to the gardens thinking about a vampire who called himself Pseudo. D and the Scarlet Hunter (for that was what the villages called her now) had trailed him from place to place for two months. Whenever they thought they had finally caught up to him, he would escape their grasp and they would end up fighting monsters instead. He was constantly slipping through their fingers like tiny grains of sand. But he wasn’t always just running away. Sometimes he set up clever traps and caught them by surprise.
Finally, the time had come for Katie to return to her brother. Though she hated going back empty-handed, there was little choice in the matter. She wouldn’t forget the way D looked as he stood beside his horse, watching her go. He hadn’t said much as far as goodbyes went, but he told her he would come to see her and tell all he had discovered in her absence. That had been three months ago, and Dathan was now married to Lindsay and Katie was miserable.
She longed to spread her wings again. It had been even harder coming back to this life once she had had a taste of her freedom. But saying she would tell Dathan the truth and actually doing it were two different things. She wasn’t scared that he would be angry; there was no doubt that he would be. What bothered her was if he truly kicked her out for good. Saying he never wanted to see her face again. She didn’t know if she could bear that from her only brother. Not living here was one thing; but not ever being able to return and see him would kill her. She was afraid she would break down and cry in front of Lindsay.
These thoughts swirled through her head as she bent down to touch the glistening wet pumpkins that were almost ripe. Her body stiffened for a moment as the hairs on the back of her neck stood at attention. She sensed someone, someone familiar…
Katherine raced down the path towards the forest. The barricade that had been there before to protect the farm was now gone. The threats from this forest had lessened since the appearance of the Scarlet Hunter. She stopped a yard from the trees and waited as a figure in black emerged. They regarded each other for a minute before she said, “Hello, Hunter D.” She just stood there, soaking wet, her best dress getting ruined; smiling like there was no tomorrow.
The dhampir’s heart pumped faster, he had missed her more than he’d realized. And even soggy she was still lovely. In fact, the drops of rain shining on her cheeks and eyelashes only enhanced her beauty. It gave him pause, but his voice betrayed no emotion.
“Hello, Katie. What are you doing outside in such weather?”
“Have you never danced in the rain?” She spun around with her arms stretched out toward the clouds. “Ray and I used to when we were children but now he says I am too old for such a thing. What do you think? Does the rain melt away women but not little girls?”
D smiled at her and as if on cue, Ray showed up. “Katie, really…” but he caught sight of D and was instantly filled with jealousy at his beauty. “Who is that man? He looks like a Hunter!”
“Ray, do not be rude, this is a Vampire Hunter that helped us out a couple of years ago. He is mine and Dathan’s guest. You may take your horse to the stable Hunter, we will await you inside,” she commanded and D nodded.
“Come on, you will catch your death out here,” Ray tugged her arm and they went in the house. She immediately ran upstairs to change before Dathan could see her and raise a fuss.
Later, Dathan was sitting in the parlor while Lindsay made tea and Ray was sulking in a corner. He had raised an eyebrow when Ray had come in a bit wet and sat down, but didn’t comment on it. When he heard a knock at the door, he called the servant to answer and when she came running in speechless, face red and eyes sparkling, he had an idea who was at the door. Only one man could do that to every girl he met. He hailed D as he entered.
“Come in and make yourself comfortable. I did not think I would be seeing you again in my lifetime! I assume you do not often make house calls, so this must be business related.”
D removed his hat and sword and seated himself. He ignored the sour look on Ray’s face. Lindsay came in with hot tea and was about to serve her husband first when she noticed D.
“I did not realize we had company. Would you like some tea? I can bring another cup?” She blushed at his beauty but unlike most women, she only had eyes for her husband.
“No, thank you.”
Dathan took his cup and a kiss from his wife, and sent the servant girl after Katherine. Lindsay sat beside her husband and immediately took a needle to mend clothes.
“You should see what a lady Katherine has grown into. She has just come back from visiting our aunt. She was gone for some time. I did miss her flitting about this house,” he sipped his tea. “Now, state your business before Katherine comes down. I am sure she will want to speak to you. She loves gruesome vampire stories and you two hit it off last time, right?”
Ray sneered and looked impossibly sourer. Both men ignored him.
“I was passing through and I heard that you raise the best horses in these parts. My steed is old and I would like to buy a younger one. You may have mine if you wish. How much do you charge?”
Dathan grinned over his tea. “There is actually a man up the road who has more to choose from, but I suppose he would not sell to you. I, on the other hand, trust your character over your heritage. I have five young geldings to choose from. I know you probably want another black one, since that is your color, so that narrows in down to two. They are $25,000 each if you wish to look at them. Ah, here is Katherine!” He rose as his sister entered the room and D followed suit.
She had changed her dress to a fresh blue one that matched her eyes. She’d dried her hair the best she could and managed to put a few curls in it. Her lips had been painted and she’d pinched her cheeks for hue. She was gorgeous. Dathan kissed her cheek and offered her a chair. Ray perked up and moved to sit beside her.
“You remember the Hunter who passed through a couple of years ago?”
“Nice to see you again,” she said politely.
“Oh, so he is the one who took care of the vampire and beasts from the forest?” Lindsay asked in awe.
“That was actually another Hunter.” D corrected her.
“Oh yes, I was going to ask you if you knew about the Scarlet Hunter. I have heard rumor that you were partners with her.” Dathan looked interested. Lindsay's eyebrows perked up. Katherine looked out the window.
“Something like that,” was all D replied. He stood up and put his hat on. “I would like to take a look at those horses if you don’t mind.”
“Of course, I will show them to you myself,” Dathan rose and went to get his hat and coat.
“Perfect timing, the rain has stopped,” Katherine commented from the window. D glanced at her a moment, his face expressionless, before he left.
Ray looked relieved. “I do not know how your brother can tolerate such filth,” his said, his tone venomous.
“Ray!” Lindsay gasped in shock.
Katherine’s expression turned dark. “Watch your mouth!” she warned in a voice he’d never heard before as she stormed out of the room.
“Won’t you stay the night, Hunter? The sun is setting and there’s no point in you going off and camping in the woods on such a wet night.” Dathan watched as D strapped his saddle to the new horse.
“Why do you offer me this? You barely know me.”
“Well, it is polite. And you seem like an interesting enough guy. Father always said Hunters make the best storytellers. It is a shame you are so quiet. Katherine could use a good story.”
“How goes it with your sister?”
Dathan rubbed his head and sighed. “She has not been herself lately. She has always acted like a caged bird but it is even worse now. She hardly smiles. She sits by the window all day like she is waiting for something. And she has been avoiding me.”
“Perhaps she just needs time. Perhaps she is waiting for something, and she is waiting to tell you what.” D led the horse out of the stable and handed Dathan his money.
“You won’t stay then? Pressing business elsewhere?” Dathan tried again.
“I will not impose on you, but I will be at the old ruins for a few days, doing some research.” D mounted his new horse and rode away.
“I am going to bed,” Katherine stated from the stairs, her eyes locked on the figures outside the window.
“It is only seven o’clock, are you ill?” Ray asked.
“Perhaps, from the rain. Tell Dathan I will not have dinner. And I will not be disturbed. Goodnight, Ray.”
At nine that night, she heard a sound at her window. Deep in sleep, Katherine woke slowly as the sound repeated. She rolled over to her back but didn’t move from her bed. Her window opened and she looked around sleepily but it was only D.
“It is too early, come back around midnight,” she murmured groggily and turned away from him.
“We must talk,” D came closer and realized she was sleeping completely naked. She lay on her stomach now and the sheets were only half way up her back. On the trail, she had always just passed out in her clothes but now she was in the comfort of her own bed with no one around and could do as she pleased. He turned away quickly and faced the open window. “Get dressed and come to the stables. There is a matter we must discuss.”
“Fine, fine,” she grumbled and got out of bed. He moved to leave but she said, “Just wait; I will only be a minute.”
As Ray was stepping out the front door to head home, he heard a soft noise like a bird dropping to the ground. He looked around the corner of the house and saw the Hunter standing outside of Katie’s window, looking up. He then ran towards the stables so quickly, Ray could barely see him. In moments, Katie jumped down from her second story window and landed on her feet like a cat. She hurried after the Hunter with a nearly matching speed. Ray was dumbfounded, but soon the look of confusion on his face changed to a look of anger.
“What news of Pseudo? Have you cut his heart out yet? Because I would be horribly jealous if you did.” Katie tied her hair up and sat on a bale of hay. She was quite cheerful considering how coldly she had treated him earlier that evening.
“I had expected you to join me by now.”
“Why, did you miss me?” she teased but D only looked at her expressionlessly.
“We vowed to hunt him together. That was the promise I made. I wouldn’t kill him without you there as witness. I believe this vampire went by a different name, years ago. Tell me what you remember of the vampires Sebastian spoke of. Pseudo is an ancient, so I think he would have known of him.”
Katie thought about it for a few minutes, pulling those distant memories to the surface of her mind. “There were two vampires that he mentioned because of their cruelty: Carmilla, whom your father murdered; and Dominique, who went missing for years and was assumed dead. He did not say much about him, only he once had a castle in the Forlorn Mountains and took victims by the hundreds on a weekly basis. He said he heard that he used to bleed his victim’s blood into a huge pool and swim in it for fun.” The thought sent a chill up her spine. “How sick.”
“I thought perhaps I could go to Sebastian’s ruined castle and see if there might be any information left there.”
“It may be possible. He had a supercomputer with a vast amount of information on humans and vampires alike. All the great history of the world… It could have been destroyed, but I have never looked around. It was too… painful.”
“I’ll look tonight then; see if I can find anything.” D locked eyes with her and changed the subject. “When are you going to talk to your brother, Katie? He’s worried about you.”
“If you think he is now, wait until I tell him. I am working on it. It is just very difficult to find the words to even begin.” She rubbed her neck in just the same manner that her brother had rubbed his head earlier. She stood and stared at her feet, her hair falling in front of her face. “Tomorrow is my birthday.”
“I was not aware.”
“Perhaps tomorrow night… after Dathan is done petting and pampering me… perhaps I will have the strength to talk to him about it.”
“How old are you?”
“Twenty one. Still a child I guess.”
“No.” D came close and took her shoulder with a firm hand. “You are a woman, Katie. Don’t let your brother forget that.” Thankfully her hair covered her blushing cheeks. She couldn’t look in his eyes as the weight of his hand did funny things to her insides.
“I must get back. Perhaps I will see you the day after tomorrow?”
“That’s entirely up to you.”
She jumped back up through her window and began to take her shoes off when she realized she wasn’t alone. Dathan was sitting on her bed waiting for her.
