CHAPTER 9
Takumi had been caught cleaning the dishes to focus his attention on something other than his boyfriend's presence. The spiky-haired blond had walked into the kitchen to grab a juice from the refrigerator. His beau's unexpected, yet familiar growl, had startled Takumi. He jumped and landed wrong because he had leaned his crutches against the counter, instead of using them while he loaded the dishwasher.
"You can't avoid taking your medication. You're in too much pain. Stop being so damned stubborn, Takumi." Keisuke had the prescription bottle in front of his place at the table as he leaned over him.
"I'm fine so I don't need them, Keisuke. Drop it already!" No matter how badly his thigh made him suffer, Takumi was not going to take his pain pills and pass out so early in the evening if he could help it.
"You're not fine. If you were, you wouldn't be sweating so much. Take the damned pills before you get sick, Takumi!"
"It's not that bad, Keisuke. I'll take aspirin instead."
"Aspirin's nowhere near strong enough. You have to take your prescription, Fujiwara!" Keisuke's hand slapped the table top as his voice got louder.
"I'm not taking it right now, Keisuke." Takumi wiped the beads of perspiration from his brow as he sat at the table. His eyes fixed on the plate Keisuke had put out at 'Kāsan Yukiko's request to avoid a blazing blue glare.
Keisuke growled as he opened the bottle and dumped two tablets on his plate. "You'll lose your leg if you keep doing stupid things, Takumi. Take the damned medication before you have to go to the emergency room for the shot instead. You're in too much pain for aspirin to work."
Takumi glanced up as Keisuke's okāsan walked into the room with take-out bags in her hands. She sat the bags down on the table and looked at them both with a lifted brow as she took in the scene. Takumi wrinkled his nose as he looked at the tablets on his plate to avoid her gaze also.
"We know you don't like medication, but you'll have difficulty keeping your meal down, Takumi-kun. You're scaring Keisuke right now. That's not a good idea. I'd prefer not to have to take him, or you, to the hospital tonight."
"I'm fine, 'Kāsan Yukiko. Aspirin will work too. . . . The pain will lessen, and Keisuke won't have any reason to be mad."
Ryuunosuke walked into the dining room with Ryosuke. "Keisuke's going to make himself sick, Takumi. It's the prescription pills, or another shot in the emergency room when you start vomiting, musuko."
"Fujiwara, if you didn't require it, you wouldn't have that prescription. That medication is mandatory for now. Nobody wants to see Keisuke have another lung spasm because he panicked over you." Takumi shivered over Ryosuke's observation, picked up the tablets and swallowed them as annoyance mixed with a surge of genuine fear.
"Domo, minasan." Keisuke spoke to his family as he frowned at him. Takumi glared at his boyfriend and heaved a disgruntled sigh. "Che. Takumi, . . . "
Okāsan's forceful interruption cut off Keisuke's growl. "Takumi-kun, you're not supposed to earn your keep right now. You aren't imposing. For some unknown reason you insist on believing you are, but you're wrong to think that way."
"You, and Ryuunosuke, erm, 'Tosān keep saying that, but it's not that, 'Kāsan Yukiko. That's just me. I see a mess, and I start cleaning. It's not like I think about it before I start." Takumi furrowed his brows as she passed out the different containers and urged everyone to fill their plates.
Keisuke took a proffered container and spoke. "Then you need to stop acting like you think you're a burden, Takumi."
"Keisuke, it's a habit. The tofu shop has to stay clean or Oyaji's business gets shut down. I'm not used to having others looking after me, or picking up the slack. I'm the one who has always looked after Oyaji for crying out loud. I don't do things because I think I'm imposing. I clean up because I always have." Takumi was irritated as he took the container from his seething boyfriend and began to fill his plate.
'If I wasn't getting so frustrated, I wouldn't need to find things to keep myself busy. Damn, if only you wouldn't hover, Keisuke, . . . I wouldn't be going so nuts. How the hell am I supposed to keep my hands to myself if I don't stay busy doing something to distract myself? All I want is to be with you. I wish I knew how to handle how intense my feelings have gotten. Before Mogi attacked us, my emotions didn't make it hard to breathe being around you. I didn't feel like I was breaking inside because I have to stay away from you.'
Yukiko broke into his thoughts. "Lifelong habits can be difficult to change, Takumi-kun. I noticed how spotless the tofu store front was this afternoon. I also saw the mess in the back area so I do understand that you have a reason for acting this way. Nevertheless, you need to understand that Otosān and I want you to get well. You need to consider curbing your habits for the time being, Takumi-kun."
Fujiwara, how about asking if something needs to be done before you start? Would that help you to refrain from compulsive cleaning?" Ryosuke asked as he took the container Takumi passed to him.
'There's a huge understatement. The only way I can stop looking for things to do is if I can jump Keisuke. He's driving me crazy because I can't wrap myself around him the same way Keisuke wants to be with me. Keisuke's lung can't handle that yet. The harder I try to not make him angry, the worse things are getting. He's getting way too overprotective, so I can't calm down. Now that his family has changed the rules and Keisuke's going to be in the same room at night, I'm really going to lose it if I'm not careful.'
Takumi snuck a look at Keisuke to make sure he had not triggered another spasm, frowned, and answered. "I don't know, Ryosuke-san. I never needed permission to do household chores before."
"I know you've had a hard time getting used to how our family pulls together when someone's hurt, Fujiwara. If my little brother would calm down, you'd probably find it easier to relax." Ryosuke observed.
The last thing he wanted was for Keisuke's family to realize the real reason for his increasing agitation. He hastened to reassure the others. "That isn't the problem, Ryosuke-san. Gomen nasai, minasan. I don't mean to make you think I see myself as a burden. I see a mess, so I clean up without thinking about it. That's the only reason I do that." Takumi hoped they would accept his answer without probing.
"Takumi-kun, Otosān and I truly appreciate everything you do. However, when you hurt yourself, it frightens all of us. You already have your hands full with our temperamental musuko. If you can keep Keisuke calm, this household will be eternally grateful. That's one thing nobody else can manage." Yukiko flashed a bright smile.
'I wish I had my hands full. Still, wishing for that is getting me ganged up on right now. The way I want to fill my hands would shock Keisuke's ryōshin. When did I start to miss Keisuke's kisses so much? If I could just stop thinking about it all the time, I wouldn't be in trouble with Keisuke's family.'
Keisuke snorted and grumbled. "It's hard to calm down and stop snarling because I can't stop worrying about your leg. You nearly lost it and still have a long way to go before it's well enough to put weight on it." The blond turned angry eyes on him and continued, "You keep doing way too much for your leg to handle. I know I piss you off when I hover, but I worry you're going to make things worse by doing chores you shouldn't be doing."
Ryuunosuke asked, "Did irritation contribute to your impulsive cleaning spree this evening? I noticed you've been tense since Ryosuke told you about their visit with your Otosān and cousin, Takumi-kun."
"Anger has nothing to do with cleaning. That's habit. I knew Oyaji was kicking me out because I won't break up with Keisuke. I'm angry about minasan arguing on my behalf because this problem is between Oyaji and me. Bringing a complete stranger into it wasn't right. I don't care if he is related to me. I don't know him."
Keisuke grumbled, "Aniki and Okāsan actually made progress with Oyaji-san. He admitted that he doesn't hate me. He's just paranoid that I'll get hurt again. That's a good start toward fixing things with him, isn't it?"
"It won't change anything, Keisuke, so naze drag a stranger into our fight? Oyaji said he'll finish packing my things. That's his final answer. I'm out of the house. I have to get a new job, and a place to live as soon as possible." Takumi shrugged, and returned to eating.
"When did you decide you're moving out, Fujiwara? You better not think you're moving without me." Keisuke's fury was obvious in his low growl.
Ryuunosuke spoke up with a firm voice. "You two don't need to worry about moving. Okāsan and I have no objections to you being here, Takumi-kun. We've already talked about you remaining after your leg heals so you have time to recover financially. In fact, we would prefer it if you remained with us, musuko." Takumi noticed Keisuke's shocked expression while the blond digested his Otosān's decree that he was a permanent resident. Takumi looked between his boyfriend's ryōshin several times. Both nodded with smiles as he also tried to get his head around this newest development.
Ryosuke intervened. "Fujiwara, we learned that several factors are still in your favor because we talked in front of Tsuchia-sama this afternoon."
"I still hate being other people's business." Takumi pushed his food around on his plate, wishing they would switch subjects.
"Get used to it, Fujiwara. Once you become a professional driver, you'll always be watched, and gossiped about. Your relationship with Keisuke will become common knowledge no matter how much you deny it in public. Tsuchia-sama can tell you about the price tag that goes with fame."
"Oyaji never talks about Okāsan's family, so I didn't know I'm related to the Drift King. I wish he'd stop saying Keisuke's got a crush on me that will destroy our lives. He's really pissing me off by saying that kind of trash."
"We'll out stubborn Oyaji-san. We know he's wrong about us, and that's all that matters, Takumi. Right?"
Yukiko interrupted as Keisuke reached over and brushed his elbow with a hand. "This morning was the first time I've seen you sleeping peacefully, Takumi-kun. If I hadn't panicked so badly, I might have realized it sooner."
"Uh, 'Kāsan Yukiko, we did break the rule, so you had a reason to be angry. It's not like we didn't deserve to get yelled at. Gomen that we misunderstood your reasons for making that rule before."
"Don't worry about it, Takumi-kun. We talked about moving the other futon into the study, but Otosān thinks you'll keep from hurting Takumi's leg, Keisuke. I hope Takumi and I won't regret this change. If Takumi's leg gets kicked, he's going to get hurt."
"Che. You worry too much, Okāsan. I didn't hurt Takumi last night, did I?"
"iie. But, I'll still worry for a few days. Otosān reminded me that I need to have more faith in you. But, it isn't always easy, musuko."
Keisuke's brows twitched. "I'm not a gangster anymore, and you know it, Okāsan. I'll prove you're wrong by getting Takumi's leg well faster."
"Nothing could make me happier, Keisuke."
There was a fuzzy ring in Takumi's vision that always started once the pain reliever kicked in. The voices at the table were beginning to sound distant and hazy to Takumi. His eyes were losing their ability to focus on the faces around him. Takumi sat his chopsticks down and blinked several times because of his medication. He knew it would not be long before his head would feel as if a blizzard of feathers were swirling about his skull. That was when the serious dizziness set in. It would not take long for him to pass out once the dizziness hit.
"May I be excused? I need to go lie down."
"The medication's effects may be stronger than usual because you took it on an empty stomach, Fujiwara. Do you need help getting to the study?" Ryosuke was quick to ask.
Takumi blushed at everyone's immediate interest and gave a slow shake of his head. "I can make it, . . . if I go now."
Keisuke sat his chopsticks down. "I'll make sure you get to bed safely."
"Keisuke, I can make it. Finish eating."
"I won't risk you falling!" Keisuke snapped. Takumi flinched at his angry tone. "Gomen, Takumi. I'm being overprotective again."
"I'm fine, Keisuke. Calm down before you give yourself another spasm."
"I know my spasms scare you witless, so I'm trying hard to make sure I don't have another one." Keisuke handed Takumi his fallen crutch. Takumi was relieved by Keisuke's gesture. He had worried that if he bent over to get it, he would fall out of his chair. "I wouldn't have them so often if you'd quit scaring me, Takumi."
"Keisuke, I'm not trying to scare you." Takumi shot back, annoyed by his boyfriend's well intentioned badgering.
"Oh really? So, I guess I'm supposed to think our fight over you doing dishes again was a figment of my imagination?!"
Ryosuke-san chuckled. Takumi saw Keisuke turn his scowl on his dark-haired older brother. "Gomen, little brother. I doubt Fujiwara will be doing that again."
"Everything was fine until you scared me half to death, Keisuke. You should have waited until I saw that you were there to start yelling. I wouldn't have jumped if I'd known you were there." Takumi flushed under his paramour's forbidding stare. Keisuke continued to glare with his arms crossed over his chest. "Well, it's true."
Takumi moved from the table, heading to his room at a slow and precise pace. Keisuke stayed close to his side, obviously seething, as he walked him into the study. Takumi plopped onto the hide a bed and put his right leg on his elevation pillow. It was up to him to calm his temperamental partner before Keisuke gave himself another breathing fit.
"Gomen for worrying you, lover. I'm not doing things to make you mad on purpose. I guess I should've left the dishes alone. It's just, . . . dirty dishes have always been one of Oyaji's biggest pet peeves. I automatically started doing them because part of me expects Oyaji to get pissed off about them. I didn't mean to cause trouble."
Keisuke sat on the edge, and grabbed his hand. "I'm driving us both crazy, and I know it. But, I wish you'd at least take your pills without a huge fight. Your compulsive cleaning's scaring the shit out of me right now."
"Those pills make me really dizzy and knock me out. I wouldn't have trouble taking something that doesn't make me feel so weird, lover."
"Takumi, every time you hurt yourself, I know you're in a lot of pain and I can't do anything to help you. I can only force you to take your medication, which I hate having to do. I can't even give you the security you need so your nightmares will fade." A hand ran through his spiked hair as Keisuke spoke in an anguished tone.
Takumi looked at his propped up knee. "Whenever you have spasms, you get the same expression as when you were shot. I know it's stupid, but, I can't stop thinking you're going to die. I can't lose you, Keisuke."
Keisuke frowned at him. "Takumi, get this through your thick skull. I'm not going to die. You're stuck with me for a very long time. As far as I'm concerned, you're my life mate, even if you haven't agreed yet. I'm going to spend my life with you."
"You keep saying that, but right now there are no guarantees if you keep having those lung spasms. I get scared because you need to heal too. I really love you, Keisuke. I want to spend my life with you too. But, until you calm down, I might lose you." Takumi leaned in and gave him a lingering kiss. He hoped his gesture would make his feelings clear. Keisuke groaned. Takumi smiled at his raw toned response.
"I like that look, lover. I wish we were over these restrictions. I would wrap myself around you and never let go. Maybe then, you'd understand how I really feel."
"We want the same thing, my own. But, you're high right now. Don't tempt me to take advantage of you. I'll be back in a little while to go to bed. I'm going to help Okāsan clean up so you don't try to once you wake up again. Ok?"
Takumi nodded as he relaxed against his pillow, dizziness flooded his system. His eyelids were drooping and his voice was losing cohesion he noticed with a vague disconnection. "I wish you would stop worrying so much. You make yourself sick when you stay mad. It frightens me, lover."
"I can't stand it when you're in pain. I thought you knew that, my own."
"Uh-hm, I feel . . . the same . . . way, Keisuke." It was the last thought Takumi remembered uttering as he drifted into sleep.
