The long awaited match of Aomine, Kiyoshi against Hanamiya, Hiazaki is finally here.
This chapter is by far the most challenging one yet, so I really hope you guys enjoy it xD
...................................................................................................................................................................
Ten minutes.Ten friggin minutes and Hanamiya hasn't made a move yet.
No sketchy plays, no snaps on anyone, no injuries. Nothing.
As the players of Keio make their way to their bench after the first quarter, they can't help but feel uneasy at this unexpected display of fair-play. Mira looks at them, her eyes expressing her uneasiness.
Haizaki being among the first to notice eyes on them, turns, his eyes locking with Mira's. And he smiles.
Not the simple charming one from earlier, but the evil and mischievous one that follows Hanamiya's example.
Hanamiya follows his gaze, looking to her and then to the rest, his eyes glowing with unsuspecting hatred and disgust, the smirk on his lips unnerving.
"Don't let your guard down", Mira hears herself speak involuntarily.
The time out seems to get over in a matter of seconds simply because it's spent in a staring contest of sorts and they all only snap out of it as the timer rings bringing their break to a finish.
Kiyoshi is the first on his feet, unaware of the hatred directed toward him.
"Aniki...", Mira reaches forward and grabs his jersey. "Please be careful..."
He turns to her with a charming yet comforting smile. "I'll be fine", is all he says before he walks away.
"Oi..!", a familiar voice calls. "Don't worry... He'll be okay..."
"I hope so...", she says to him, her eyes distant.
He steps I front of her, blocking her line of sight.
"I'll make sure of it... So don't worry"
She focusses on the blunette, her eyes softening.
"You take care too okay..? The last thing we need is our ace on a wheelchair", she says jokingly.
He chuckles at that but moves closer to her, his warmth drawing her in.
"You know I will", he leans forward and gives her a soft peck above the temples. She looks up to him, a little too late, as he leaves her standing and walks away too.
All players take their positions, the Keio ones more on edge than usual.
The second the game restarts, things go haywire.
Hanamiya clicks his fingers and Hyuuga stiffens almost immediately. This is their most dreaded signal, the one that's meant to notify them that someone is going to get hurt.
And just as immediately, as if on role call, Haizaki shifts positions, opting to suddenly go up against Kagami. Kagami dodges his swatting hands and turns a full 180, moving the opposite way. But before he could make another move, Haizaki moves his leg so subtly, that the unsuspecting Kagami trips and would have fallen flat in his face, if not for his agile hands stopping him a millimeter from the court floor.
"Kagami-kun..!", Kuroko rushes to him and helps him up.
"Bastard..!", Kagami spits out.
Haizaki doesn't even look at him as he moves away smirking, marking Aomine next.
The game continues onward and not even a minute later, fingers snap again.
This time Haizaki moves onto the blue-haired ace. Aomine takes a steps back only to hit a human shield. He smiles down creepily at Aomine, who to avoid him, moves forward only to be cornered by Haizaki.
"No escape Daiki", he teases and moves in for the kill.
The blunette is quick with his movements as he evades Haizaki by going under in a rapid and abrupt flash effectively tearing away from the round double team.
Running to the basket, he smirks back at a cursing Haizaki.
It was a sudden movement, almost too fast for the blunette to follow, when with a hard jab to his side, the ball is stolen from him. Aomine whips his head to the front a little too late as Seto makes for the basket leaving the blunette running after him, clutching his aching stomach.
He passes to Reo at the mid-line. Reo jumps forward, Hyuuag at his heels, but then dives back down going for an earth shot. Hyuuga is just a second late and the ball leaves Reo's nimble fingers and drops right into the basket.
A stream of curses leaves the captain as he stands there, shaking his head, silently cursing himself for not seeing that coming.
Under the basket, Kiyoshi eagerly shoots for the ball, fingers wide to claw it in. His hand is so close to the ball, he reaches farther. The ball is suddenly swatted away, a hard body kneeing the stretched centre. The brunette smashes his lids close at the searing pain and drops to his knees, a hand holding him up on the ground.
"Teppei..!", yells Hyuuga running to him.
"Senpai..!", Kagami and Kuroko follow.
Keio looks to the ground umpire with eager eyes, waiting for the whistle confirming the foul. But none comes. Instead, the umpire just holds the ball, not knowing what just happened and signals a wait for the players to recover.
Hyuuga's looks to Hanamiya, whose ear to ear smirk pushes him off the edge. "You bastard..!", he yells, rage filling him.
"Captain..!", a low grunting voice calls stopping him in his tracks.
Aomine glares Hyuuga to a stop, calming him down just a bit. "We'll get him back...", he says putting a hand on his shoulder.
.......................................................
33-37. Kyoritsu leads get by four points now.
Mira crushes the cup in her hand, her uneasiness peaking. So this is their plan, she thought. Getting her players off guard, decoys everywhere, and pushing them to their physical peak by bombarding them with minor injuries.
Eikichi and Hayama sit beside her with clenched fists and grit teeth as they see a fellow king, use such sketchy tactics putting them all to shame. Perhaps he's the reason they're all still uncrowned.
Over the past few minutes of the second quarter, Kyoritsu has been playing with them, manipulating them like a bunch of puppets.
Hanamiya stands at the top of the chain barking orders, effectively restricting Keio's movements. If things didn't go his way, he'll just injure a player, like its the most natural thing in the world, preferably the opposition and leave them lying helpless.
Kiyoshi is on the top of Hanamiya's list, followed by Kuroko and Hyuuga. They've beaten him in the past and he's eager to beat them up for it. The sad part is that Kagami and Aomine are caught in the cross fire.
As the second quarter progresses, Haizaki takes on main offense, stealing moves from the opposition, making basket after basket putting Kyoritsu in the lead by 10 points.
Under each of said baskets, Kiyoshi tries to get the ball but is stopped mid-way by Kyoritsu's centre either swatting the ball away or pushing down heavily on him.
Despite this, Kiyoshi manages to claw the ball and throws it to Kagami. The ball then went from the him to his shadow, who passed it in ignition to their power forward who made a cut towards the basket.
Aomine races to the basket, Kagami running along side him as they tear through their opposition's defense.
The ball then just disappears from his hands and appears in Kagami's and the moment it took for the opposing team to realize that Aomine had made a pass was the moment Kagami stepped into their defense's opening and jumped and slammed it into the hoop.
Aomine runs over to the red-head, giving him a playful slap on the back, acknowledging his achievement.
Hanamiya curses under his breath.
"Shougo..!", he calls and Haizaki appears.
"I've had enough of those two", he mumbles to him angrily.
"They're strong..!", pants Haizaki. "What'd you suppose I do..?"
Hanamiya whispers something to him, leaving him smiling like a Cheshire Cat.
And no time at all they're all back to running, Keio scrambling around the court to make a comeback.
Kuroko uses his magic and gets the ball to Kagami who then passes to Aomine. Aomine rushes forward when suddenly a hard hand tries to slap the ball away. It would have succeeded if not for the blunette's firm grip on it.
Haizaki retracts his hand and lunges at Aomine.
They go up against each other, and Aomine gets a ball in, just to get back at Haizaki for earlier. But unfortunately, the shot was way to easy. It's like Haizaki hasn't even tried to defend it.
As soon as the ball lands, Haizaki steals the ball before the blunette's searching hands could and Aomine tries to make a grab as though to get it back, and instead he stumbles forward, tries to catch himself for a few steps, but with a slight push from his opposition, goes down hard, landing on his side.
He grunts and tries to get up, but the pain holds him down.
"Oi..! You okay down there..?"
The blunette looks up to see Kiyoshi, his hand extended in invitation, a soft, worried smile on his face.
"Yeah", he groans getting up.
"You gotta be more careful ace-san", he says.
Aomine says nothing just nods back at him.
"We have to get through this... Mira's rooting for us. We can't let her down you hear..?", he asks softly and Aomine can't tell if that was for him or if Kiyoshi was trying to convince himself of it.
He turns to Kiyoshi. "Understood", he says determined.
Hanamiya walks by and eyes the two and smirks to himself.
'The show is only just beginning'
The last seconds of the second quarter are under way and the members of Keio, led by the blue-haired ace himself, are scrambling to get the ball.
Hanamiya runs with the ball, contemplating his next pass.
Haizaki and Seto, leave their targets behind, and run criss cross to their captain. Hanamiya mouths something to them and passes to Seto.
Kagami goes after him, but he whooshes past the red-head, effectively outsmarting him and runs to their basket. He then passes to Haizaki, who just about caught the ball, snatching it away from Aomine's reach.
He goes around the blunette, copying his 360 turn, and rushes to the basket.
Unfortunately for him, Aomine is crazy fast. Unfazed by Haizaki's evasion, he whips past Kyoritsu's ace and blocks him.
"Out of the way..!", he screams, frustrated.
Aomine smirks and lashes onto him.
Haizaki passes to Reo. A split second later than that and Aomine would have gotten hold of the ball.
Reo ducks under, faking an earth shot and shoots upward, going for heaven instead. The ball spins in the air but gets slapped down by a very angry Hyuuga who has predicted and countered Reo's signature move once again.
The ball bounces along to Hanamiya's hands when it suddenly vanishes and lands in Aomine's instead.
"Nice pass Tetsu", and he lunges for the basket.
Seto moves up ahead of him and crashes into the blunette deliberately, stopping his movements with an intelligent and well timed foul earning them a free throw.
All players line up at the basket, the centers ready to get the ball.
Seto lines himself and pushes the ball in with a nod at his fellow centre.
The ball falls through the hoop and the centers dash for it. Kiyoshi grabs the ball and pushes it to Hyuuga. Just as he lands, a leg slips around his and yanks his leg forward making him fall on his elbow, a loud cracking sound beaming through the room.
The referee stands there, shocked at the events unfolding in front of him. He knows of Hanamiya's tactics, knows that his methods are wrong, but can't do anything about it as it was in his blind spot. It's always in his blind spot. So he just looks down in shame.
Hyuuga drops the ball and stares in horror as Kiyoshi, clutching his elbow, attempts to get back up. He tries so with his free hand but falls back down, his body failing him.
Mira, eyes wide in shock, moves forward to help him, but a strong hand holds her back. She looks up to see a raging Eikichi holding her back, his eyes fixated on Hanamiya as though wanting to tear him apart.
Her eyes move back to her brother, still struggling to stand. A single tear slips out of her eye as she watches helplessly.
After quite a struggle, Kiyoshi manages to lift himself up, his legs still a little wobbly from the impact. He tries to move forward but he suddenly slips and would have fallen once again if not for a strong, calloused hand pulling him up and swinging his free hand onto a muscled shoulder.
"Ace-san...", he starts but Aomine cuts him off.
"How bad is it..?"
"............", Kiyoshi just stares at him.
"Oi..."
"I'm fine...", Kiyoshi blurts out, not taking his eyes off the blunette.
"Good...", the blunette slowly carries him to the benches and sits him down.
"I'm gonna be right back", he says walking away.
Mira kneels next to her brother. "Aniki...", but Kiyoshi is too busy staring at the blue-haired ace. She follows his gaze.
As soon as he enters the court, the referee looks to Mira, asking to start the game. She merely nods in response.
The second the whistle blows, Aomine is on the move.
Hanamiya places a double team on him, but he evades them with ease, blowing past them like a stormy wind, threatening to blow them all away.
And that's exactly what he does. He whooshes past their forward, stealing the ball in the process. Dribbling the ball back and forth and around the opposition, escaping and evading, raging through the court.
Three more try and block his path, but this monstrosity of a player won't be stopped. He moves around them, crossing over and jumps from the three-point line, bringing his hand down over the basket and slammed the ball straight through the hoop.
He lands with a loud thump and looks over his shoulder at a gaping Hanamiya, Haizaki right next to him.
'You're going down'
...........................................................
"Bakagami..!", yells an irritated Hyuuga.
The third quarter has begun and both teams' offenses are in full play.
Keio, now in possession of the ball is powering forward, to get the score even.
Kuroko passes the ball from Hyuuga to Kagami and Kagami pushes through Seto and runs to the basket only to mis-dunk it.
"It was so straight forward Kagami", says Kiyoshi.
Yup, Kiyoshi is back on court.
After the first half, he was rushed to the infirmary where he was swarmed by the medics. Apart from minor injuries and the not so healed knee, he was fine. And as for the elbow...
If was a dislocation. The doctor snapped it back in place easily and assured the entire team that he could still play. After all, all sportsman get injured like this during games right..? He convinced them, that Kiyoshi could play as long as he stayed away from the net, reducing his physical vulnerability.
After the doc's clearance, next came the coach's who was more than reluctant to let him play.
"There's no way in hell is letting you go out there", she argues.
"Mira...", he starts.
"No..."
"Ohh c'mon..! The docs cleared me right..?", he pleads.
"Onii chan is so stubborn. He can't always get his way", she says with a pout.
Kiyoshi smiles softly, secretly happy that he's got his imouto back, from the worried mess she was earlier.
"And don't you dare say that you're back only to protect your team..!", she storms off after that.
Back at the locker rooms, Aomine sits with a towel atop his head, brooding.
"Oi..! What's got your panties in a knot", asks Mira trying to lighten up the mood, ruining the blunette's "moment"
He snaps his head up and glares at her, a slight smirk tugging at his lips. "I'm not the one wearing my lucky panties...", he teases back.
She looks at him with narrowed eyes and then plonks herself right beside him.
"God..! This match is so stressful", she groans out.
"Ohh really..? I had no idea"
"............"
"How's that tummy of yours..?", she asks reaching around him.
"It's fine. Nothing to worry about"
"Right...", ", she touches the bruised skin. "You haven't gone to the medics have you..?"
"Don't need one", he hisses as her cold fingers ghost over his wounds.
"Lemme take a look", she kneeled in front of him, lifting his jersey a little to examine the bruises.
"These don't look so good...", she mumbles.
"I said I'm fine", Aomine swats her hand away.
She glares up at him.
"Geez..! So stubborn", she reaches forward again, but he catches her hand midway.
"Just leave me alone", he grits out.
"No..!", she retorts. "I'm not going anywhere until you either get them checked", she points to his side. "...either by a medic or by me.."
"Ugh fine", he huffs not wanting to argue any further.
"Sit", she orders and kneels back down, slowly rolling his shirt up. "Hold it"
She stretches to her side and gets the first aid kit and pulls out its contents.
"Stay still okay..?"
She squeezes out the ointment onto her fingers and smears it onto his bruises with the gentlest of touches.
Being treated by her might not be such a bad idea, thought Aomine, loving the feel of those tiny fingers.
Her fingers work their way from his side then to his back, his arms then his legs until all his bruises are covered.
The blue-haired ace watches her wide-eyed as she works with such concentration. She moves carefully so as not to hurt him, her fingers gently rubbing and soothing the pain away. He'd hiss once in a while but wouldn't complain, too busy watching her work.
He'd inwardly wonder as to what good he did to deserve all the attention and care she'd give him. He'd never admit it out loud, but he sure did love having her around him, with him.
She was a lot like him, strong, confident, sometimes arrogant, bossy... But this caring and loving side of hers she'd reserve only for him. And maybe for her brother too.
His thoughts shifted to Kiyoshi then.
With what he'd seen of the centre, Iron Heart now did seem like a fitting name for him. The guy was absolutely applause-worthy. He'd always encourage, pushing his teammates forward, and helping them up if ever they fell.
He'd command respect and admiration from those around him and now held the blunette's too.
"There... Good as new", Mira stood up and started packing the first aid kit.
"You didn't have to...", he mumbled, standing up himself, rubbing his neck uncomfortably.
"You didn't leave me much of a choice... You wouldn't have anyone else look you up"
Mira walked to him and placed a sweet peck on his cheek. "That was for that last dunk", she winks at him and starts walking away but a strong hand grabs her by the waist and pulls her back.
"Thank you...", whispers the blunette into her ear.
She turns around in his arms and cradles his cheek, staring into his dark orbs. He pulls her closer and stares back before diving down and capturing her lips.
The kiss was sweet, yet passionate, soft, yet demanding... And short lived.
They pulled apart moments later and Mira rested her forehead against his.
"Be careful okay..? I won't be able handle it if you get it bad too...", she whispers.
He smiles down at her. "Don't you worry...", he pulls back and kissed the top of her head.
"Time's almost up guys", Kagami peaks in.
"We'll be right there"
They pull back further and walk out, arms together, fingers intertwined.
"Okay... Let's have some fun", says Kiyoshi excited.
"Ohh no ya don't", Mira grabs his jersey. "You aren't going anywhere"
"Hey..! I thought we were passed that now that my arm's fine"
She glares at him angrily. "That might be.. But you going in isn't good for you"
Before Kiyoshi can argue further,
"Let him go...", Mira whips her head to Aomine.
"What..?"
"Let him play"
"What..?", she says louder.
"Ohh c'mon..! It's not like he's broken the arm right..?"
"He's a lot more bruised than the rest of you.. And plus you don't recover from a dislocation in 10 minutes..!"
"True... But this is his fight... So I too think that you should let him play", says Eikichi from behind them.
Mira now looks to Hyuuga for help. "As much as I'd like to agree with you, Eikichi's right...", he looks at her seriously. "Look I don't like the idea of letting him play either, but he can't keep running away from that bastard Hanamiya...", he continues shaking his head. "This has got to end"
"And Senpai's the only who can end it", finishes Kuroko.
The young coach takes a deep sigh. "Fine...", she looks to her brother. "But another scratch on you and you're out understood..?"
"Yeah...", he nods, smiling at her in gratitude.
And so the third quarter began.
Coming back to the present, Hanamiya dashes through the court, figuring out his next target.
He'd motion to Haizaki and Seto, his henchmen, to get to positions and try and throw Keio off their game.
Unfortunately for them, Keio would get away a second too early, thanks to some last minute tact-bits from their coach.
Back at the stands, Mira stood proudly, a slight hint of nervousness and worry in her eyes as her plan was set into motion.
Kuroko was made point guard, his primary job, getting the ball as far away from them devious hands as possible and he managed to do a stunning job, his movements having improved from high school.
Kagami knowing that Kuroko would be the key to their victory stopped at nothing to keep him safe. Aomine on the other hand was to cover the other two, Kiyoshi a little more than Hyuuga who was on Reo. Reo wasn't a rough player, so no problem there, but Kiyoshi was the most vulnerable below the net and so Aomine took care to get all his shots in, him and Kagami switching sometimes from forward to centre, keeping Kiyoshi moving on the court.
This new play of theirs puts maximum strain on the forwards, who willingly accepted the burden to save the rest from Hanamiya's clutches. They're determined to win so even if they're all battered up, they won't listen to their seniors when told to pipe down a bit.
But out of it all, Aomine remained to be the real shocker. Who would have ever thought that the once proud, insensitive and cocky ace actually had a soft side..?
Mira smiles weakly at the thought, a familiar warmth spreading through her.
Her worried eyes soften seeing his panting silhouette.
Through out this quarter, he'd surprised his own team, dodging, covering, saving and pushing. He'd even take some hits meant for them and would still put on that cocky smile and teasingly encourage them onward. This side of Aomine was unseen save for maybe his former Teiko mates, who sitting in the audience, cheered him on, happy that the old Aomine is back.
"Aominecchi", yelled an excited Kise, watching his former teammate and rival, surge through the court.
"Mine-chin's doing well ne..?", munches the ever emotionless Mutasakibara, as amused Himuro sitting next to him, nodding in agreement.
"He's awesome ne Shin-chan", beams an excited Takao.
"I'm not surprised", says Midorima pushing his glasses up, a tiny smile on his face. "He's always had a way with the ball"
Aomine with his street style, breaks through teams' formations and took possession of the ball, the rapid change of pace he did to tear past a defender. The blunette flying to the air and landing dunk after dunk, competing with Kagami while they're at it, their names becoming a chant and their lights only growing into this blazing fire that enchanted everyone who saw them, who saw him.
"Interesting...", says Hanamiya running next to Kiyoshi.
Kiyoshi snaps to Hanamiya who has a devilish smirk on his face. Kiyoshi knows something is wrong, that Hanamiya and his team way been way too quiet now, and that in these moments, Aomine has something bad coming.
Reading his mind, Haizaki appears, cutting the blunette's path.
Aomine fakes to the left, pushing through him... Or so he thought.
Haizaki, stealing Kagami's move, turns 180 and grabs the ball from his hand. He runs to the basket, an enraged Aomine not far behind.
His leaps off the ground, Aomine following a split second later, and positions a dunk with his elbows stretched outward. He jerks the ball in, moving his arm back later and his elbow smashes into Aomine's eye, the force sending him crashing downward.
The timer rings, bringing the quarter to a startling finish.
"Aomine..!"
"Aomine-kun..!"
"Daiki..!"
