Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Nine
Age 15
The next morning came without hurry. In the comfortable warmth of your bed, you had no desire to get up. In fact, you were pretty sure you wanted to stay curled up until the world ended. There was a certain tranquility to sleeping with your friends beside you even if they were pokemon. Especially since you could tell that they were both as content and happy as you were at the moment.
Sunlight did eventually find its way into your room. The beams of light slid through the panes of glass and lit up your room with almost a sparkling quality. Still in a mixed muddled haze of sleep and being awake, you reached your hand out to play with the beams of light. As you shifted, even as subtly as you did, you felt Rorsh move closer into your back. You smiled and lowered your arm. Eevee still lay curled up in a ball by your stomach. Which caused a certain feeling of disconnectedness when you looked down to see him. He had moved under the cover at some point during the night, of course, so now he was against your skin. Which meant that the blankets were over him as well and gave you the odd appearance of being pregnant. Or at least, what you thought it might have looked like when you looked down being half asleep.
The absurdity of that thought made you giggle. Eevee stirred from his restful state as he felt your stomach move with your laughter when you tried to suppress it. He wasn't the only one you woke up. Rorsh's split tail moved up and down as though reminding you that he was still behind you. As though you could forget.
"What amused you?"
You smiled. It twitched on your face as you continued to try and repress the laughter. Honestly the thought of looking down to see the illusion of a pregnant stomach shouldn't be so funny. But coupled with the thought that the bulge contained and eevee and that somehow, in your relaxed mind, made it very amusing. You reflected that it was probably considering that the closest you had gotten to making a child was the kisses from last night.
Thankfully Rorsh was actually minding his own business this early in the morning. Otherwise you wouldn't have had time to explain.
Eevee wiggled down and rolled out of the cover, fighting with the edge of the sheet as it had tangled around one of his paws. He jumped up on the bed and licked your cheek as you ruffled up some of the fur between his ears.
"When I looked down and Eevee was under the cover, it looked like I was pregnant."
Yeah, it sounded like a weird thing to giggle about to you too when you said it. But it was really the absurdity of that happening that amused you. The fact that, that's what you saw and connected to it was amusing too.
"That amuses you?" Rorsh questioned as he stood up and stretched, taking more space than when he had been laying down.
Bed hog.
"Well yeah. I mean I just had my first kiss last night. The idea of being suddenly pregnant and the fact that's what I instantly thought it looked like is kind of amusing."
Despite the honesty of the statement you couldn't help but feel like something was off. Especially with how still Rorsh had gotten in mid stretch. He rose back up, towering above you as he stood on his spot of the bed beside you.
"Kissing leads to pregnancy?"
You frowned slightly as you tried to explain it to him. First that meant that you had to put it into words for yourself and nothing you imagined seemed to be helping the situation. In fact, it was probably making things worse. Your stomach turned into butterflies as your imagination coupled with the teenage level hormones of your body. From the look on Rorsh's face and the glow of his gem your thoughts had stopped being private ones.
Before you could explain any future, Rorsh lept off the bed. He opened the window up with his psychic powers before leaping out. You scrambled to get off the bed to chase after him but you were too late. You saw the sun shining off of his slick, clean fur in the distance. He was like a streak of silver in the early morning light -dazzling. Watching him go should have been beautiful but at the moment all you could feel in the pit of your stomach was dread.
Rorsh was upset. Really upset. You knew he didn't like Max very much. He hated him, actually, and you didn't know why. You just didn't think he'd react to snooping around in your head quite like this.
Quickly you turned around and started getting dressed. You knew it was going to take a while but there was no way you could let Rorsh run away without explaining. He probably thought the absolute worst of you. After all, when Pokemon fall in love it's not about what he saw in your head...it was about the actual emotional bond. The world still wasn't exactly sure what happened during procreation between pokemon but you were pretty sure that it was an intentional for children type deal. So you could only assume that's what Rorsh thought you were planning and he probably wasn't ready for that kind of a change. You definitely needed to explain to him that was not what you had been considering - the idea of actually having sex to get preganant, sex at all really, was not something you planned on doing. It was just like every other teenager with a working drive and hormone system the thought did cross your mind once in awhile…
"Come on Eevee, we need to go find him," you said in an extremely worried tone.
He had never run off before. Not like this. You weren't even sure where to start looking.
Which meant that you pretty much had to search the entire ranch before you could report to 'work'. You quickly figured out that it would be impossible to do both as the sun climbed higher and higher while you searched. Unfortunately in your rush you had only passed the person you were mentoring under for the sixth months' duration with a quick 'Can't work today' before you pretty much took off running again.
You searched high and low for rorsh. He wasn't near the water sunbathing as he was prone to do. Nor was he in the forest taking a nap. Those were the usual places and he was obviously avoiding them. So you went to the sandy area where heat lamps had been plugged in. Then to the small rocky hills and valley which had been formed after that. Still nothing. You went back to search through another patch of forest and then towards the plains. Yet each area returned the same - nothing. What you realized somewhere during your search was that he could have been in any of those areas and just moved off when he felt you coming. After all, he now had years of experience sensing with his fur while you were still only human.
It wasn't like you were going to let that be your excuse however. You trudged up the side of the mountain that had been turned into a pseudo volcano with Eevee at your side. When he tripped and started to stagger behind you picked him up and used one hand to hold him at your shoulder while you used the other to help guide you up the steep hill path. Taking a fall from any height was unpleasant, doing it from quite a few meters up even more so which was why you were extra careful on your way up. Especially considering that it was getting dark.
Halfway up you caught a break. You saw a flicker of lilac from one of the cracks as Rorsh went inside. Quick as you could, you made your way over there and slipped beneath the crack. You had to put Eevee down to be able to fit and even then it was a little tricky. The crack obviously hadn't been made for humans or larger pokemon in mind. Thankfully you had been able to fit your head through everything but your chest felt a little abused by the time you got to what looked like a longer corridor.
By the time that happened the sun had set beyond the level of the crack, which meant that there was very little sunlight entering into the cave. You weren't even sure what level, exactly, of the 'mountain' you were on considering that the passageway had been inconsistent. You could already feel the panic rising up in you and you paused in your search for Rorsh to try to calm down. This wasn't as bad as it felt...it couldn't be because it felt really bad. Like life or death bad and you were having a hard time breathing.
You leaned up against the rock as Eevee brushed up against your leg. You could feel him trying to help you calm down. Both he and Rorsh knew exactly how much you hated the dark - especially if you didn't know the area well. Like right now. This was pretty much the worst situation you could think of and you were pretty sure that it was only going to get worse.
"I'm sorry, Eevee, I'm sorry," you whispered over and over again as you sat down on the ground. "I just...I can't. I can't."
What you couldn't do, even you weren't sure. Only that you felt like something was pulling you down to the ground and wrapping around you. You pulled your knees as tightly to your chest as you could, though with limbs that seemed to disobey you like lead weights that was easier said than done.
You shivered as a cold draft filled the cave. The day had been warm and you had dressed for such which means you weren't exactly prepared for the night that followed. Even the stones beneath you were chilling. That was to be expected as these stones had probably never seen the sunlight.
You felt Eevee pushing up between your legs, offering you warmth and you took it without question. You wrapped your legs around the smaller pokemon and tried not to think about the fact that you were in the dark, in a place you had never actually been before. You closed your eyes and huddled around the lovable bundle of fur.
A sound of haunting laughter caught your attention in the worst way. You jumped, scrapping your hand against a jagged section of the wall when you tried to push yourself away from the noise. With a hiss you cradled your hand and sucked at the torn skin gently, trying to sooth the burn that came with the wound.
Your heart beat in your chest like a drum on steroid beating out a rhythm too fast to really dance to. The laughter started again and again until you were on the verge of tears. You shook your head as you tried to clear it from your mind. You knew it must have just been a ghost pokemon playing a prank on you once it senses your fear. You knew that but it didn't make it any easier while you were trapped in this dark confined space.
Eevee did his best to try and comfort you, he really did, but it was only a few boiling drops of oil in the bucket of ice water that had become your fear. You tried to cling to it, tried to focus on Eevee but the taunting sounds of the ghost pokemon and the utter darkness around you struck down deep even if you had your eyes closed.
Then without much warning the laughter started. A glow swirled around just ahead of you, blocking the exit. You could see it's faint light even from behind your eyelids as though you had no choice but to notice it. This glow took shape into a very familiar figure. Max. You knew it was a ghost pokemon trying to trick you but that didn't stop you from gasping in surprise. You stumbled back as the figure of 'Max' moved forward. He wordlessly extended his hand with a very creepy smile on his face.
With a growl, Eevee rushed forward. Despite his passion to protect you, he slid right through the ghostly figure and hit into a jutted out section. A normal type attack had no effect on ghost or ghost pokemon. As you watched him try again you tried to warn him like any good trainer should be able to do but all that came out was a choked sound. Then suddenly 'Max' broke apart into handfuls of laughing, crying, and screaming skulls.
Your subdued shriek as you collapsed back into your self must have triggered something. Suddenly the small crack and circlet of open space you found yourself in glowed bright. Eevee, hunched all over pulsed within the glow. You shielded your eyes from the brightness even as Eevee grew. There was a sensation in the air that was part fear and part pleasure. Another one of your pokemon was evolving without you ever having talked to them to plan it out first just like before. It was something you should be proud of but at the same time it made you afraid and sad. What if Eevee changed and didn't like it? What if he could accept his new body? Or what if his personality changed as it sometimes did when pokemon evolved?
"E--" you called out but stopped yourself as the light died down.
Where Eevee had been now stood an umbreon. One that looked pissed as hell. He charged forward and grabbed ahold of one of the taunting skulls with his mouth. This time it made contact and you realized his must have been using the dark type move 'Bite'. As Umbreon's jaws clenched down on the skull it disappeared. Over and over again Umbreon used his dark bite to chase the skulls away from you until suddenly there were none left.
The area quieted down as he walked back over to you.
In a somber tone you whispered, "I'm sorry that you had to evolve to help me...you shouldn't have had to do that."
After all, the thing that you liked best about eevees was the fact that like a lot of humans they got a choice in their future. They, in a sense, got to pick what kind of person they wanted to be when they grew up. Just as you had that choice. They were the ones that got to choose their type. It was not something any other pokemon ever got to pick. But an Eevee did. Of course there were people who picked for them but still...it was the idea that you enjoyed. Yet for both of yours it felt as though you, in needing their assistance, had somehow removed that choice from them. Rorsh had evolved into an espeon because you had needed his help during the day and Eevee had just now evolved into an umbreon because you needed his help during the night. It was an indication that you raised them well, sure, but it still felt like you had somehow removed their choice.
Umbreon butted against your arm as he wedged himself between it and the rest of your body. He rubbed his head against yours. His tail curled around his legs in it's full bushy state.
"I chose to."
Your mouth opened up in surprise as you turned to look at him, only to see a certain resolve in his large red eyes. He pressed his forehead against yours, butting it a little as though the two of you were playing around. You turned around slowly, mindful of the fact that your hand was already cut up, and hugged him tightly. Your body still trembled from being in the dark and the mean trick the ghost pokemon played on you but it helped to know that in some way you hadn't removed all of your pokemon's choice.
When the shakes subsided you started to stand up. The rocky area was completely dark again so you closed your eyes and tried to feel your way around. You felt Umbreon's tail brush up against your stomach, pushing the shirt up as you walked, to try and help remind you that you weren't alone. He also found subtle ways to guide you back through the narrow passage. Even if you did take long this time around you were thankful to be out of the crevice. It wasn't until you got outside, however, that you remembered why you hadn't tried this earlier.
Other than the fact that you had been afraid, the hill's path up and down wasn't what you would call wide. It didnt' have any guide rails or foot holds either. With the moonlight that shined you had some visibility but not much. Then you realized Umbreon sat still in front of you, soaking in the moonlight. He stood up slowly as the rings around his body started to glow. Coupled with the moonlight it was enough for you to see where you were stepping. Just barely, of course, but it was enough that you didn't trip and fall to your death.
Once you got to the bottom you put your hand on his head and bent down. You pushed your face into the his sleep fur, whispering your thanks. When you pulled away you kissed the tip of his nose and smiled.
"My little angel in the darkness," you whispered happily.
He butted into your jaw and licked the side of your lip before snuggling into your hold. Something clicked in your head as you sat down, looking at him. With a smile you spoke out softly.
"Nox," you whispered. "As a name - do you like Nox?"
Umbreon weighed it over, his head tilting to one side as he stared at you. Then after what felt like a while he nodded. And so you resolved that the eevee you had gotten as a second pokemon whom you had yet to be named until he evolved would be Nox from now on.
