Shade and Gertrude watched as Broken won another battle.
Two weeks ago, the secretly admired, dark skinned woman from next door had decided to pay a visit.
She was a fighting type trainer, and, she had a Machop of her own. A girl Machop.
Broken was instsntly impressed and decided that he was going to show off every day once work was done. Sometimes he would still be out there while Shade and Gertrude retired for the night.
In return, the object of Broken's attention seemed to be enjoying his company as well. The two were about evenly matched and if there was no one to fight they used Aura's weights.
Shortly after Broken won his fight, Machop win hers. The two were estatic and hugged before a light engulfed them. Shade had the presence of mind to pull out her pokedex. A duel evolution, she had never seen it before.
"So you are done with the house?" Aura asked watching the two Machop evolve into Machoke.
"Yeah." Shade answered. "Miyu is happy, with the paint, carpet, everything."
"You don't seem happy."
"I need a job." Shade answered. "I mean, we have no problem winning battles, but one loss and we are halfway away from getting our own place."
"You don't like traveling?"
"We have no issues with traveling, except the desert and I get seasick. Well, it has been a while since I have been on a boat." Shade thought back to the fee places they had considered settling. "We just want a place to return to."
"You know, I see you messing with electronics and stuff. Pokeballs, I didn't even know you could repair those."
"Yeah, it can be a challenge, but it saves money."
"My boss would like to meet you!" Aura smiled brightly.
"What?"
A few hours later Gertrude and Shade sat across from a man in a fine suit. He had short, dark brown hair and a goatee. He was on the phone and talking in a language she didn't understand.
When he hung up he looked at her. "Who are you?"
"This is Gertrude and I am Shade." She answered.
He seemed surprised, but only for a moment. "My sources say that you are a genius when it comes to technical stuff."
"I don't know about genius..."
"Nonsense! You have repaired TM devices. I run a large company, even my scientists can't do that. Everyone I have ever spoken to that has any knowledge of such devices say they only know how to mae new ones." He sat upright. "You have even made one with multiple uses, even if it is only three, that is impressive."
"Three was the most I have gotten."
"So that is really impressive!"
"No offense..." Shade adjusts her posture. "You know me, but, who are you?"
"Sean, Sean Right." The man reached across the desk and Shade shook it. "When can you start?"
"Sure is confident, isn't he?" Gertrude told Shade through their bond.
"Well let's work out the details first." Shade said.
Gertrude grinned, Shade had some ideas.

Shade walked in and stumbled to bed. Waking up Gertrude as she did.
"Work..." Deep breath. "... sucks." Then snoring.
After fifteen minutes of power sleep Shade sat up slowly. "I need a break." She yawned. "How was training?"
"I learned a new move!" Gertrude bounced on her knees lightly. "Want to see?"
Shade nodded and found herself pinned to the bed. Since she too had been taking classes, Shade countered the move, only to be pinned again. Gertrude giggled madly while Shade gulped. The Kirlia's skirt was flipped up and shade stare at her exposed femininity.
"You give?" Gertrude asked.
"Yeah. You win. I'm too tired."
Gertrude let Shade up and sat in Shade's lap. "So tell me about work?"
"I'd rather hear about the book you're reading?"
"Just the history of Rustboro City. I figured since we've been here all this time."
"So, boring." Shade stated. Gertrude rolled her eyes. "What happened to that romance novel?"
"I finished it." Gertrude grinned. "It was pretty steamy!" She bit her tongue cutely as she answered Shade's unspoken question.
"And?"
Gertrude grinned. "You need a date."
"I think I'll take some vacation time, we can all go out for the month."

"Cheer up, Broken!" Gertrude and Shade put their arms around him.
"So she wasn't the one." The machoke huffed at the Kirlia.
"Hey, there is a trainer up there." Shade pointed out "Want to battle?"
Broken took a moment to stretch.
"Hey there!" Shade called. "You up for a battle?"
The other trainer picked up his pace, and around the bemd in the road came several others. They all met up just short of a large tree.
Gertrude picked up on a feeling from her fighting companion.
She missed the terms of the match that Shade and the other trainer had set out.
"Cool Machoke!" The leader of their opponent's group had said.
Broken turned his back on the trainer and walked several steps away.
"Hold on a sec." Shade headed over to the Machoke. "Broken, what's up?"
"He isn't worth my time. He shouldn't even be training!"
"What are you getting at?" Broken answered by holding up his ball. "Oh!" She placed a hand on his back. "Oh."
She returns to the group. "Okay, same plan, different player." Shade put an arm around Gertrude. "Us against two of your pokemon."
"You're crazy!" The youngest of the other party stated.
"I've trained with wild pokemon. Gertrude, Broken and I practice all the time. So bring it on."
Shade watched as Broken's former trainer sent out a Linoon and a Slowbro.
"They're pretty strong." Gertrude let Shade know.
"I got the bro, you keep the Linoon on it's toes." Shade responded.
At first the Slowbro and Linoon were hesitant, but after being punched by Shade the Slowbro was all for it. Since his partner was in the fight the Linoon was soon after Gertrude.
Shade was hit by a strong heatbutt and used counter the Slowbro slid back but being psychic it was uneffective. Slowbro yawned.
Shade and Gertrude both yawned.
"Shit!" Gertrude went to scold Shade, but figured the energy would best be used in the fight for the time they had left.
"Switch!" Gertrude used psychic on the slowbro and shade used counter on the linoon. Both opponents were tossed back.
"Switch!" Shade called.
Gertrude landed a kick on Linoon and Shade bit Slowbro.
"Seriously!" Their trainer yelled. "You bit a pokemon!"
"Dark type trainer!" Shade informed.
"You have a Machoke and a Kirlia." He said flatly.
"Oh, these are my partners, not the Sneasel and Weavile I grew up with."
"Well that explains the look." He motioned to her outfit.
"Shade!" Gertrude warned her a bit late and Shade was tossed back by Linoon's own headbutt.
The last thing Shade remembered immediately after was a psychic blast, though she couldn't see who's.
Her eyes opened to see a Gardevoir cradling her and Broken fighting half a dozen pokemon. Shade struggled to her feet, against Gertrude's insistance that she lie down. Targeting the three psychic types in the group, Shade did something she didn't dare do before, reveal that she could use Dark type attacks. The dark pulse swept through the opponents and took several down. Gertrude joined Broken and finished off the rest. The shocked trainers, luckily, hadn't seen where the dark attack had come from.
They recalled their defeated teams.
Shade, still on shaky legs and with a swollen jaw and eye held out her hand. "We win, pay up!"
"Dishonorable!" Gertrude used her telapathy to broadcast Broken's assessment of the others to them all. "Unfair and low... You're scum!" He stepped up to his old trainer. "Bet you wish you hadn't left me for dead." He took the money then turned and walked away. Picking up Shade like a baby and letting Gertrude hop on his back. "Next time, have some honor!" He called back.
They camped out in a cave about thirty feet off the path. Well, more like a hole in the side of a hill. Trees and tall grass helped hide the location.
"Would our cave be like a clubhouse when we find it?" Gertrude asked.
"More like a home. Made up with everything, not just the crap we find to drag in." Shade watched Broken, sitting at the entrance looking up at the stars.
"He think's it is his fault." Gertrude filled Shade in.
"I'm going to go talk to him." Shade got up and took a seat by Broken.
They sat there quietly for a bit.
"If I had just battled..." Shade shushed him.
"Before you were with the team, this was how Gertrude and I did things. I did this with wild pokemon before I started this trip." She pulled down her shorts and showed him a scar on her leg, just under her butt. "Little Brother had just learned scratch!" She said with a big grin. "Surprised the heck out of me!"
"You mean you've battled pokemon before!"
"Still do. I just took a break." She patted his arm. "And, Broken, not sure if you've noticed this, but I'm not... exactly normal."
"You do seem weird." Gertrude started to laugh. "I mean you like females."
"Yeah, that happens in all species. Just, out in the wild... I'd rather not think about that." Shade felt uncomfortable and the laughter from Gertrude abruptly stopped. "But that isn't what I had meant."
"She's part Sneasel!" Gertrude stole the reveal.
Broken looked back at the psychic as if she were joking but then caught sight of Shade nodding yes.
"So that thing..." He pointed to the pokedex. "... isn't broken?"
"Nope." She pulled the pokedex out. "Speaking of which." She scanned Gertrude. As the device processed Shade really looked the newly evolved Gardevoir over. "Grey skin. Black ears, cute! Orchid hair." She heard a chime from the device
"Gardevoir. The embrace pokemon. Dark Fairy type."
"Okay, this thing's broken." Shade shook it a few times. She looked up the old entry for Gertrude as a Kirlia. "Psychic Fairy... but you had learned a lot of dark moves for a psychic type." Shade sat back and stare at Gertrude, who was finally taking a good look at herself.
"I thought you were joking!" It was hard to tell if the new Gardevoir was worried or not. She seemed pretty panicked. 'I'm a freak!" She clung to her hair worridly after tossing the hand mirror into the grass outside.
"I think you're beautiful." Shade stated.
"Of course you do!" Gertrude drew her knees up and hugged them. "You're supposed to."
"I think you are beautiful too. And that isn't just because you're like my big sister." Broken added. "I think everyone is going to be amazed with your looks."
"I wanted to look like my mom!" Gertrude tapped her pokeball and went inside.
"She does, just, not the same color." She felt Broken looking at her. "I'm fine, it isn't your fault."
"Still I..." He looked to Shade again. "You need some aspirin?"
"I'll just eat a few of those brownies I got from Aura. They really help with the pain." Shade dug a few out and handed one to Broken. "Plus they help you rest."
"I still don't trust her." Broken mentioned.
"Because her Machoke left you?"
"No. That blinded me to what Aura is like. Sure she seems nice but I get this strange feeling from her. Your boss too!"
"Yeah, Gertrude told me something about Aura too, but honestly, I think she was jealous. I was hanging around with her a lot until I found out she has a boyfriend." Shade bit off the corner of the brownie. "Point it, I put people off too. They hold their wallets, check their pockets, stare at me like I'm a criminal. Even when I'm not wearing this jacket." She held it up. "Finally figured out why. Team Rocket, some old crime syndicate." Shade gave Broken a hug. "For the record, I don't trust them either. I do listen to what you and Gertrude say."
"Then why do you work with them?"
"We need the money, we need to make connections, and then... well, I don't know. Solve why I'm a freak so we can enjoy our lives." She let go of him. "I think... I think I want to run a gym. Me and You and Gertrude fighting like we did today... only a fair fight." She chuckled.
"What if things change?"
"Then things change." Shade sat back against the wall and held Gertrude's ball. "Never know how they will but you have to make the best of them."
