Hours passed since Mochi Hana began surveillance at the pavilion. Nothing out of the ordinary had taken place during her watch up to that point; everything seemed too normal for her liking. Horie’s men were nowhere in sight. Were they avoiding that entire section in town? Who could have tipped them off if that were the case? Fatigue was Mochi Hana’s enemy; doubt her constant companion.
Beyond the pavilion the open vendors were doing business with shoppers and hungry people were ordering meals and joining others who were already gathered within the pavilion’s enclosure. Mochi Hana scanned the area several times through the back alleys and rooftops. It all seemed hopeless, but she wasn’t about to let discouragement have its way with her. Something had to give, and it wasn’t going to be Mochi Hana.
Across the street atop one of the thatched rooftops Mochi Hana recognized Aoshi’s outline blended well into the shadows, as was she. The waiting was definitely wearing on her tattered nerves. Though Horie was her blood brother, Mochi Hana found it impossible to forget how callously barbaric that man was capable of becoming when his temper flared. Did she have within her what it will take to stop Horie at whatever cost? Such were her thoughts as she waited.

Just outside the city, Saitou and Cho sat together dressed as farmers. Their wide woven hats hid their faces from, not only the elements, but from peers as well. Soiled, tattered clothes hid their identities well, simply appearing to be escaping the noon’s heat while taking a breather under the shade of an admirable cherry tree.
“Hell, everyone’s beginning to look the same to me,” said Cho as he rubbed the back of his neck to ease a little of the tension he was experiencing over being frustrated.
“You are our best bet to recognize Horie’s stooges. You worked with those dogs long enough,” Saitou said as he worked at the tie to his footwear. “Don’t miss a person leaving or entering the town. Check everyone out carefully. If that scum is outside this city he has to be getting his supplies somehow.”
“Yeah, let’s not forget that he runs the underground in this city too. He can’t just cut his contacts off.”
Saitou nodded. “Those are the people you would be able to recognize. Patience. We all could use a double portion of that right about now.”
It was difficult for Saitou to practice patience knowing that Sano was held captive. Obviously Horie was intending on using Sano as a persuasion piece, or perhaps even a trade token. Saitou’s head throbbed. The pain shot from his shoulders, into his neck, and pulsated at his temples. Saitou shut his eyes briefly and recalled how Sano used to work wonders at relieving his tension headaches. Sano definitely had a way of loosening his inflexible muscles and sooth obstinate tension.
“Damn!” Saitou blurted abruptly.
“What the hell?” Cho questioned rather startled.
“I can’t just sit here, my spirit is against doing so. I must move.”
“I’m with you on that, I’m as antsy as a fly on shit,” agreed Cho.
Saitou looked at Cho disapprovingly and shook his head. “Let’s move pass this area and poke around the abandoned building up the road,” he suggested.
“What do you suppose Horie wants with Sano?” Cho asked as they stepped out into the street and headed even further away from the city.
“Security interest, more than likely,” Saitou replied.
Adjusting the chinstrap to his straw hat Cho sighed with relief. “If that is the case then we can assume that Sano’s not in a life-threatening position as long as that asshole keeps his cool.”
Saitou nodded and looked squarely at Cho. “If anything happens to Sano, Horie is breathing his last.”
“Awww hell, let’s not even go there. You’re right to begin with; that shit bag needs Sano to insure him that hell won’t break out over his head when we catch up with him.”
As they walked the dusty road, horse drawn carts and wagons were passing them on either side. Cho carefully studied the people, while Saitou examined the contents of the wagon-loads, but nothing looked suspicious to either one of them.
“Wait a minute, slow down,” instructed Saitou as he held his hand out across Cho’s path. With a quick toss of his head to direct focus toward some dilapidating buildings he said, “Take a look, a cart parked behind the thick brush.”
“Looks like an old, broken-down cart to me,” said Cho.
“Broken down carts do not have horses harnessed to them,” remarked Saitou.
Cho squinted to see through the bushes. “Ahhh, you’re right! Damn I see it as plain as day now. How the hell did I miss seeing that before?”
“Come on, let’s cut across the back end and get a closer look.”
“I’m with you boss-man,” said Cho as they both left the road and disappeared into the thickets.

“Hey, you look just like a lady I know,” Sano blurted when he saw Ichie walk into the room. Sano was still shackled, but free to walk its length to stretch his muscles.
“You must have met my sister, Mitsu,” Ichie replied as she sat the serving tray down at the base of the crossbars.
“Yeah! Wow, you’re Mitsu Akatsuki’s sister? What the hell are you doing with the likes of Horie?
”
Ichie shook her head, “Don’t ask. It’s complicated and I’m afraid that I’ve done the most foolish thing.”
“Yeah well, join the club. I’ve been known to do some pretty stupid things in my time, but this time I was minding my own business, and before I knew it, I ended up here dressed like some pretty-boy plaything; compliments of Horie himself.”
“I’m afraid I came here by my own free will,” Ichie confessed, “but I’d give anything to be free of that insatiable maniac. All he’d ever done to me since I’ve been here was abuse every part of me, including my mind.”
“So, why don’t you just leave? You’re not in chains like I am,” Sano asked once again lifting the ankle that wore the shackle.
Ichie lowered her head and with a sigh she said, “I don’t need chains to bind me here. I could never get away from Horie as long as he is alive. No one can, not if he chooses to keep them.”
“Not true!” Sano exclaimed. He reached down, held the shackle that bound his ankle and wriggled it. “If I didn’t have this holding me, I’d be long gone from this nasty place.” Sano thought about it for a second. He pointed at the little iron lock at the base of his bond. “Hey, is there any way you can get this unlocked for me?”
“I don’t have the key. That would be Koji. He manages most everything that goes on here when Horie-sama isn’t around.”
Sano’s eyes grew wide. “How about getting it for me… for us. If I can get rid of this vile thing, I can get us out of here.”
“How do you plan to do that when you don’t know where you are? I’m sure Horie-sama didn’t allow you to see your way in,” Ichie said.
“How did you get in?” Sano asked. “Do you know where the hell we are?”
“I followed one of Horie-sama’s men. We aren’t too far from the city, but the entrance to this lair is well hidden,” Ichie replied.
“I can see that we’re up against some sort of hill where Horie did a pretty good job of burrowing into from the looks of this.” Sano looked around and noticed tree roots growing through the top and sides of the earth and rock above him. “We can’t be too far from the surface. Hey, I bet we’re just beyond the abandoned town where no one ever goes anymore.”
Ichie brightened up with interest. “Yes! I saw enough to know that is exactly where we are! Do you really think you can get us out of here?”
“If you can find a way to get this damn shackle off of me, hell yeah!” Sano boasted.
“All right then, I’m on my way,” said Ichie. She immediately ran toward the exit.
“Hey!” Sano called after her.
Ichie stopped just short of the doorway and turned, briefly. “Huh?
”
Sano smiled reassuringly, “be careful,” he said.
“I’ll be back,” Ichie winked, “with the key!”
Ichie set out quickly into the underground chambers headed directly toward Koji’s room where he kept a collection of keys for the various locks and drawers Horie had collected overseas. She remembered seeing them and hoped they were still where she saw them last.
Her petite feet lightly patted the stone cold floors of the corridor and through the darkness of hallways she ran. She reached the servant’s quarters, which harbored another row of chambers just before the kitchen, where Koji busied himself with chores and tasks. Her heart pounded beneath her chest, barely able to breathe quietly without gasping for breath, she quietly entered Koji’s room.
What was left of a sizable candle had almost burned itself out in its tray atop the old wooden desk at the far end of the room. That was where Ichie last noticed the metal ring with different keys connected to it. It was difficult to see. Ichie scurried her hands over the objects upon the desk, hoping to hear the clatter of metal objects, but there was nothing to feel. She tried very hard to see through the shadows that were cast upon the desk by the dimming candlelight.
“No…” Ichie whispered as she picked up the dying candle and lifted it above the desk to chase the shadows away. “Gods! The key is not here!” She bit her lower lip and thought hard. “Where would he keep the key if not here?” She swallowed hard, not wanting the words to become audible; they slowly slipped through her lips reluctantly anyway… “Horie’s chambers.” At the mere mention of the underworld lord’s name she shuddered as though a freezing chill ran up her spine. Unwillingly, but determined, Ichie set the candle tray down and left Koji’s room.
After she had left the servant’s quarters she reached the kitchen and peeked in. There, she saw Koji busy at rolling a creation of his out on the table. White mochi flour draped across his forehead and a baker’s apron wrapped around his torso Ichie saw as she approached him.
“Hello Koji-san,” Ichie called out in a friendly manner.
Startled, but very happy to see the pretty young woman Koji dropped his task at hand, stood erect, and graciously bowed. “Ichie-san, it is good to see you.” He glanced down at the bandages around her hand. “My heavens, did something happen? Is this serious,” he questioned as he pointed to Ichie’s arm.
“It was the vase I broke; it angered Horie-sama,” she sighed heavily.
“He did this to you?” Koji asked. He hastened to her side and took her bandaged hand into his own.
Ichie took advantage of the opportunity given her and practically collapsed into Koji’s arms. “Oh Koji-san,” she quietly whimpered, “Horie-sama was a calloused madman. I know I was wrong in throwing the delicate vase at Nakuyo, but I was hurt and blinded by Horie-sama.”
“Hey listen, I should have cleaned up the broken pieces. I feel responsible for this. I am sorry, please find it in your heart to forgive me,” Koji earnestly appealed.
Ichie picked her head off of Koji’s chest and looked into his eyes; tears trailed down her cheeks as she pulled him against her. “There is nothing to forgive. The thought of blaming you for Horie’s outburst hadn’t even crossed my mind.” She closed her eyes and set a fervid kiss in motion.
Koji was powerless to stop Ichie. He had only imagined having such elated moments with her, but they were only dreams…fantasies. However, as Ichie’s full lips met his, he was immediately caught up in a euphoric rapture that took him by surprise. He was in no condition to refuse her aggressive hands that seem to roam over his entire body all at once. Her actions stole his breath and rendered him oblivious to her true motive.
“What is this?” Ichie asked as she pulled a sum of keys from his side. When Koji didn’t bother to answer her, she continued to inundate him with full, appetizing kisses and tucked the metal collection into a compartment in her kimono. “Mmmm,” she moaned to encourage Koji’s ardor for more.
After receiving an onslaught of deep, enthusiastic kisses and electrifying caresses from his dream girl, Koji gently pulled Ichie from him. “We can’t allow ourselves to be caught by the lord. He would be furious if he found us like this. Perhaps if we are careful and meet when he is away?”
“Yes, yes, you are right,” Ichie agreed. She tried not to show her uneasiness, but she couldn’t help trembling knowing what she needed to do. “At another time then,” Ichie nodded and sweetly smiled. She straightened her kimono and hastily walked out the door.
It seemed to Ichie that she couldn’t get herself to walk down the corridors fast enough. As much as she wanted the nightmare to be over she knew that the terrible burden she had to live with would never cease as long as she stayed with Horie. Her only hope was to help Sano out of that dreadful shackle.
She agonized through the last two steep hallways to Horie’s chamber room and without haste she ran through that room as well. Yes! Ichie was glad to see Sano where she had left him and Horie was nowhere to be seen. Luck was on their side.
“Am I glad to see you!” Sano chirped quite happily. “I was beginning to wonder if you were able to see this thing through.”
Ichie dropped to her knees beside Sano, reached into the lapels of her kimono and retrieved the bundle of keys. “Here, it has to be one of these,” she said as she held the metal wad of iron and offered it to Sano.
“Shit…” Sano complained as he took the bundle from Ichie. “I hope I don’t have to fit them all before I find the right one.”
“I’m just hoping the one key we need is among them. All we have left to do is try.” Ichie looked over her shoulders as though she heard someone approaching.
“What is it?” Sano questioned as he tucked the keys quickly into the waist of his fundoshi.
“I thought I heard something,” Ichie replied. “You must hurry! I will stand by the door and warn you if anyone enters the adjacent room.”
“Yeah, good idea,” said Sano as he pulled the keys from the wrapping around his waist. His hands were steady as he tried key after key hoping that one of them would be his lifesaver.
Ichie stood at the door, turning occasionally to look over her shoulder, carefully listening for anyone approaching from the corridor.
“Got it!” Sano exclaimed as the heavy shackle fell from his ankle granting him freedom. He immediately stood to his feet and rushed at the door. “So how do we exit this hell-hole? You do know the way out, right?”
“Yes of course,” replied Ichie. “However, Horie’s men guard every intersecting tunnel, and he also has men patrolling the outside as well.”
“Don’t concern yourself about the corridor guards, I can get us past those chumps. Just walk ahead of me and distract them. I’ll hit them from behind,” said Sano. He picked one of the heavy bookend statuettes off the table beside him; one of Horie’s overseas collections and measured it for size in his sight. “This is perfect for clobbering the shitheads,” he chuckled. “Go ahead, you first; I’ll be following you closely.”
“Right,” Ichie responded with a quick, determined nod.
Ichie crossed the threshold and ventured right to connect with the main corridor. From there the exit was only steps away. At the intersection there awaited a guard, which Sano would have to prove stronger in order to advance from that point. She slowly approached the intersection, took a deep breath to relax her tensed breathing so not to outwardly appear nervous. As she turned the corner she expected to see the guard, but instead saw none other than Horie approaching the guard from the opposite direction. Timing could not have been worse. Ichie stopped dead in her tracks and was about to turn and go off in the other direction, but it was too late.
“Ichie,” Horie called out rather surprised. “What would you be doing on this side of the corridors?”
Sano immediately threw himself against the cavern wall, so not to be discovered. He held his breath and listened intently to what was being said. He could hear voices echoing, a man and a woman… but were there three people there? Sano wasn’t so sure, and he wasn’t about to make a move until he was certain.
“Horie-sama, hello,” Ichie said loud enough to tip Sano off as she tried to remain calm. “I was just taking a stroll. I normally wander around through the corridors to get my exercise.”
“Where you thinking of avoiding me right then Ichie?” Horie suspiciously questioned as he watched for any subtle reactions.
Ichie lowered her head, “To be honest, I was thinking of ignoring you. I must confess that I am still pretty shaken by this,” Ichie held up her bandaged hand.
Horie chuckled rather unfeelingly, “Oh that,” he said, “I’m sure that I don’t have to remind you that there are consequences here for ill behavior.”
“No, you don’t have to remind me Horie-sama. You weren’t wrong for losing your temper with me. I did deserve my punishment.”
“Believe me young lady I took pleasure in disciplining you,” Horie smiled revealing his venomous whites. “Come with me now to the great chamber and we’ll start afresh.”
“But Horie-sama I haven’t finished with my walk,” Ichie said weakly knowing that there would be nothing she could say that could change his mind.
“Ichie-san, you can always get your walk in some other time, but right now I want you with me. Understood?”
“Yes my lord.” Ichie glanced to where she had just come from, and then reluctantly followed Horie.
Sano waited for a moment until the clicks of Horie’s boots were no longer heard. He edged his way to the edge of the corridor’s wall and peeked around toward the direction Ichie took. There was just one guard standing, facing the other way. Sano was very sure that he would be able to take the guard down, but how would he find his way out? He had to move forward; there was no turning back. Forward Sano went, one step at a time, rather silently. He was grateful the ground was as polished rock. There were no pebbles to step on, or accidently kick across his path and risk making his presence known.
The guard began coughing; perfect timing for Sano to make his move. He swiftly sprinted toward the guard and just before he reached the man he clasped both hands around the little statuette, brought it over his head, and sprung into the air in a flying leap. With all his might he struck the guard behind the neck causing the man to buckle at the knees and collapse onto the ground without a fight.
Sano knew he wouldn’t be able to stand up against Horie—not alone. No, he would have to get backup in order to take the underworld lord down. Making it out of the caverns to tell others would be an accomplishment, and by the looks of what was ahead of him Sano wasn’t so sure if that was going to be possible. The corridors were drenched in darkness. The cavern lamps were few and far between, but it was either do or die. Sano’s choice was to survive.

Horie walked over to the large settee after pouring himself a serving of fine imported whisky. “I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to this,” he said as he held up his glass to examine the caramel color of the musky drink through the glass. “Come, sit here next to me,” he patted the large fluffy cushion of the velvety settee.
“Yes Horie-sama,” said Ichie obediently. She cautiously approached him and sat with her hands folded upon her lap.
“Now, tell me Ichie-san. Have you learned anything from your experience?” Horie questioned as he pressed the rim of the glass against his bottom lip and toyed with it with the tip of his tongue. It caused him to experience a slightly burning sensation from the alcohol, which he enjoyed.
Ichie nodded. “Yes my lord, I have thought about it and will not repeat my wrongdoing.”
Horie took another sip of the smooth, smoky tasting whisky and blew a breath from his puckered lips. “I have to admit that the flavor of your essence was relished. I adored seeing your blood in contrast against your pale, white skin.” Horie took another sip from his glass. “Do you think it odd that I find you pleasurable that way?
”
Ichie hesitated in answering. She could smell the hard liquor on Horie’s breath and could barely keep her body from trembling. She was almost free of him and his insanity, but now she was sitting right beside Horie only to wonder what he had in store for her.
“Ichie, your silence speaks louder than words.” Horie finished off the last of his drink. He sat the glass down on the table beside the settee and turned his attention, once again, toward Ichie. “You think I was rather barbaric in my actions; I can see it in your eyes.”
“Nnn…no Horie-sama. I do not think that of you. I was afraid for my life. Afraid what you might have done to me when you are like that. That is all it was.”
Horie ran his index finger along Ichie’s shoulder. “Are you afraid of me now?” he asked.
“It is just that I don’t know what to expect,” Ichie replied. “I haven’t been with a man before in such a way.”
“Remove the bandage from your hand.” The mere sight of the cloth coddling Ichie’s wound stimulated Horie and had awakened his lusts. “I want to see how bad it is.” He set his arm over her shoulder and pulled her close. “Come now, don’t be shy…” Horie words seemed to drift as though his mind was being transported elsewhere.
As Ichie unraveled the cloth that covered her injury she could have sworn she heard Horie’s faint moan. His fascination over her lesion sent alarming chills through her spine. She was almost petrified by fear, but she did as Horie asked and held her uncovered hand up for him to view.
“Magnificent,” commented Horie. Horie swiftly took her wrist into his hand and stared. “It intrigues me how a wound is able to repair itself so quickly. And then,” he looked into her eyes, “what is left behind is an ever present work of art, which is also remembered when looked upon.” Horie brought the wound up to his lips and placed a kiss upon. “You will always remember me when you see the scar upon your palm, isn’t that so, Ichie-san?”
“Yes,” Ichie nodded, “I will remember.”
“Ahhh, but the memory you have of me then was of my being terribly angry at you, isn’t that correct?”
Ichie nodded again, not daring to look into Horie’s eyes. “Yes,” she agreed, “I was terrified.”
Horie frowned. “That is no way to remember me by,” he said. “I must change that.”
Repositioning himself, Horie quickly undid the fly of his trousers, reached through its folds, and produced his fully erect organ before him. His eyes were dazed; a sure sign that his fervid, deviant lust was once again in control.
“I want your hand to surround my cock,” Horie said, his words plundering in accelerated licentiousness.
“What?” Ichie questioned in disbelief.
“Give me your hand!” Horie unpityingly demanded. He angled his cock away from his body and took Ichie’s hand roughly into his own.
“Ow! Itai!” Ichie squirmed from the agony of her wound. Her flesh barely healed from the slash that the broken vase had caused her when Horie sent her petite body to the ground. She gasped and shut her eyes tightly as his cock came in contact with her sensitive flesh.
Suddenly a voice, Koji’s voice urgently beckoned, “Horie-sama! Horie-sama! May I enter, we have a situation!”
