An Angel\'s Smile

Yun Kouga owns Earthian; I am only borrowing her characters for my own personal entertainment. This story was one of my first attempts at writing a story he fhe first person style. I\'d love to know what you think of it.

I look up at the stove as a soft chime fills the kitchen. Wiping my long hands off on my apron, I reach over and turn the burner off. Lifting the cover of the pot, I set it back down at an angle so the steam can vent properly. It smells delicious and I smile knowing that this dish is one of Chihaya\'s favorites. He will be so surprised. I hum happily smiling at the chiseled, blue-eyed blond reflected in the lid of the pot. This will surely make him smile. I love that smile of his. It\'s so sweet and so full of joy, an angel\'s smile. I don\'t think I could ever tire of that smile.

Walking around the white tiled kitchen, I gather up the dirty dishes and rinse them off. Chihaya will wash them once we\'ve finished supper, but if I didn\'t rinse them before hand he\'d never be able to get them clean. Once the dishes have been seen to and the counters wiped clean I put the food out on the table. Seeking the clock I my eyes widen in surprise. It\'s much later than I thought. I wonder where Chihaya is. He should have been back by now.

Pacing the floor, I glance up at the wall clock again. It\'s only been five minuets since I last checked the time. Where is he? I know he often comes home late, but this is the latest he\'s ever been. I can\'t help feeling a sense of foreboding.

A flash of fear touches my mind and heart and I\'m on my feet before I know what I\'m doing. Chihaya is in trouble. That\'s all I need to know. I snag my coat as I fly out the apartment door with inhuman speed.

Ice clenches at my heart as I take the stairs three at a time. Running out of the building I stick to the shadows a tall blur of darkness melting into the night.

I can feel Chihaya\'s presence. He isn\'t far away. In fact, he almost made it all the way home. Cold rage floods through me as my eyes adjust to the darkness and I see a tall man with long brown hair wrapped around my mate. I would have rushed him then and there, but he moved suddenly causing light to flash off the blade in his hand. Cursing under my breath I move up behind the earthian who dared to attack my mate.

To think of the beautiful innocence gone from his eyes, to never again see that smile so filled with life and light. No, I will not let that happen. Slipping forward unnoticed, I raise my hand to knock the man out when his voice stops me.

\"What\'s wrong with you. You\'re being raped. Why are you smiling? Are you crazy?\"

Glancing over the attacker\'s shoulder I look upon my lover\'s face and indeed he is smiling. But why, I wonder? Held paralyzed by my confusion I watch or rather listen as the man growls at Chihaya.

\"Tell me why you are smiling. I want to know right, NOW!\"

I watch the smile grow wider on that delicate face at the question as laughter dances in the vivid violet eyes. \"It\'s because I\'ve discovered that I am strong.\"

I find I cannot breathe. Such courage he shows in the face of danger. He knows this man could mad may very well hurt him and there is nothing he can do about it. I can see that in his eyes. But he hasn\'t given in, and he hasn\'t give up. What a brave heart my little black angel has.

\"No, you\'re weak and pathetic!\" He shouts as the blade trembles against Chihaya\'s neck.

My lip twists into a parody of a smile, what does he know of true strength? He knows nothing, if he thinks to gain strength by grinding down others under his heel.

Unfrozen by my lover\'s brave words I let my hand fly. \"No, Chihaya is strong. You are the one who is weak and pathetic.\" I inform the earthian before he crumbles unconscious at the black angel\'s feet.

Pity, compassion, and a deep abiding sadness fill Chihaya\'s lovely amethyst eyes as he bends to check on the man I felled.

It\'s so odd, to feel sorry for someone who would have very likely killed him without a qualm. I don\'t quite understand it. But I suppose that is why he was a positive angel when we were still working for Eden. He sees the good in everything, even his enemies.

He looks up at me one fine boned hand reaching out to mine when I see distress cross over the surface of his face and he drops his eyes.

\"I\'m sorry Kagetsuya, the groceries are...\"

Shaking my head, I place a finger on his lips to quiet him. The silly boy was nearly killed and he is afraid that I will be angry about losing a bag of groceries. How little he values himself. Holding him close I lick his wounds closed, happy just to have my arms around him. \"The groceries are in no way as important to me as you are, idiot. We can go shopping again tomorrow. For now we shoget get this creep tied up and then call the police.\"

He nods flinging his arms around me with a tight squeeze. I return the squeeze amazed at my own good fortune. Kissing the crown of his head I gaze down at him with all the love I have inside.

Smiling his angel\'s smile Chihaya gives me a kiss before backing away. I feel bereft as he leaves my arms, but I know we have to deal with the attacker before we can do anything else. With one more smile for the man I love, I turn to the task at hand.
