Somewhere In Time

AU. OOC. It takes place in New York in the late 1800\'s. This fic was born out of the idea that the relationship b/w Ryo and Dee seems a lot like those of many period romance novels I\'ve read. Hope you like it!

Reviews welcome, no flames please.

Dee glanced around the large ballroom. He\'d been back in upper New York and civilized society for only a week and already he was restless. The same faces, the same conversations. He wished he was back at his claim, back west where things were exciting and always changing. Where he could be himself and didn\'t have to put up with all these useless frivolities. Well, Diana had said it would be worth his while to come back for a week or two. She had better be right. Searching through the crowd, he finally saw her in a far corner near talcoalcony. As usual, she was surrounded by a ring of admirers. Men found her irresistible and women found her fascinating. Her bright blond hair was twisted up in the latest fashion. It matched the ostentatious red gown she was wearing. Only Diana would dare wear it.
Suddenly a shock of honey-brown hair caught Dee\'s eye. The crowd parted and he saw that not all the admirers were Diana\'s, next to her stood a young man. He had the deepest, darkest eyes Dee had ever seen, which were only more pronounced by his fair skin. Under his impeccable clothing was a lithe, strong body. Dee couldn\'t help but admire his gorgeous body. Although the young man was being very polite, Dee could tell he wasn\'t relishing the attention.
\"Deeeee!\" whined a high-pitched voice next to him. He\'d forgotten someone was talking to him.
\"Sorry, love. We ll continue this conversation later, shall we? I have some business I must see to,\" he said to the pretty woman, who had just recently made her debut into society. She pouted but let him go. There was no use trying to make him stay, he was a notorious rake and no one woman (or man) seemed capable of capturing his attention for long.
Diana watched Dee from the corner of her eye. It had taken some coaxing to get him back to New York, but she was as stubborn as he was. Eventually, his curiosity won out, and he agreed to come. Still, she had half expected him to change his mind. As she saw him enter the ballroom earlier that evening, she had to suppress a grin. She knew Dee well enough to know he would take a keen interest in her new guest, In fact, she had some money riding on the outcome. When she watched Dee\'s eyes widen in surprised and then narrow with arousal as he openly assessed her guest, she knew she had been right. Tonight would be interesting.
\"Excuse me,\" Ryo heard a silky voice say close to him. Turning, he met a pair of sparkling green eyes set in the most handsome face he had ever seen. The man\'s hair was back as jet and his skin, though not exactly tanned, was deeper than usual for a gentleman of leisure. For some reason, he blushed under the man\'s gaze. Was he staring? he wondered. He hoped not, it would be horribly inappropriate!
\"I feel neglected, won\'t someone keep me company or is everyone enchanted with the newcomer?\" Dee asked. He was addressing the flock of women around Ryo, but his eyes stayed fixed on the young man.
\"Dee! You know we\'d never neglect you!\" a gaggle of female voices chirped up and soon Dee was walking away, surrounded by flowing gowns.
Diana watched the exchange with amusement. Briefly, she wondered if Dee had been jealous of Ryo getting all the attention, but now she guessed he had diverted the ladies\' attention away from Ryo because he had his own plans for the handsome blond man. She saw Dee turn back and wink at Ryo. Perhaps he also wanted to relieve Ryo of the attention because he was rather obviously uncomfortable with it. She wondered.
\"Who is that man?\" Ryo asked, interrupting Diana\'s musings.
\"Oh, Mr. Laytner,\" she answered, trying to sound surprised at his inquiry, \"We all call him Dee. He\'s new money. Making a fortune out west with some claims in California.\"
\"He didn\'t introduce himself,\" Ryo said with a hint of indignation, \"Very rude of him.\" Diana giggled.
\"Dee doesn\'t care much for convention,\" she explained. \"He does whatever he wants... and whomever for that matter\" she said rather pointedly, looking at the group of young women, and men, surrounding Dee.
\"Whomever?\" Ryo questioned, watching the crowd.
\"He says he\'s an equal opportunity lover,\" she pause\"Do\"Does that please you, Randy?\"
\"What!? W-Why would it please me?\"
\"You can be honest with me, I don\'t judge!\" She pushed, hoping to get more information out of him.
\"The nature of Mr. Laytner\'s exploits are of no concern to me!\" protested Ryo. \"Excuse me,\" he bowed and turned away from her.
Well, Diana thought, perhaps things were going to be more difficult than she anticipated.

Ryo made his way to the balcony; he needed the fresh air. Stepping out under the star lit sky, he breathed deep and hoped the brisk night air would cool his body and slow his racing heart. Despite his protest to the contrary, Ryo found himself disconcerted by his powerful attraction to Dee Laytner. Something about the man drew him in, irresistibly.
\"All alone?\" he heard a husky voice whisper next to his ear. He nearly jumped as he saw the object of his musings standing next to him. It took him a moment to collect himself.
\"Y-yes. I needed a breath of fresh air. I\'m not used to such lavish affairs.\"
\"I didn\'t introduce myself earlier, I apologize for my rudeness,\" the dark-haired man said with a wicked grin that looked anything but apologetic. \"I\'m Mr. Laytner, call me Dee.\"
The man\'s gaze was so blatantly predatory, Ryo felt as if he were a fox suddenly caught by a hunter.
\"Pleased to make your acquaintance. My name is Randy McLean, call me Ryo.\" Why had he said that? No one but his family called him by his Japanese name.
\"I knew there was an air of the exotic about you,\" Dee said, stepping even closer to Ryo. He leaned his face down toward Ryo\'s, their noses almost touching. \"Your eyes give you away,\" he said, lacing his words with innuendo.
Blushing furiously, Ryo merely continued to stare up at Dee s intense jade eyes, not quite sure what he meant or what to say.
\"They\'re very dark; they look rather oriental,\" Dee finished, enjoying the heated flush in Ryo s face.
\"M-my mother was Japanese,\" Ryo said, tearing his gaze away from Dee\'s with some effort. But even without looking at him, he could feel Dee\'s proximity, his breath brushing against his cheek. He wondered if Dee would react with the same destain so many others had upon finding out he was of \"mixed-blood\".
\"She must be beautiful for you to be her son. Or do you get your handsome looks from your father s side?\"
Surprised by Dee\'s reply, Ryo looked up at him again. Perhaps he had been teasing him. But, no, his face was serious.
\"Thank you,\" replied Ryo, letting out a sigh of relief he hadn\'t realized he was holding and smiling genuinely up at Dee.
Dee sucked in his breath. He had enjoyed flustering Ryo with his attentions, but the warmth in Ryo\'s smile stirred something deeper within him. The young man before him seemed to transform into an angel in the moonlight. He d never felt like this. Slowly, as if afraid moving too fast would break the spell, Dee inched his lips toward Ryo\'s. He slid his fingertips under Ryo\'s chin, tilting his head and guiding his mouth to him.
It was a dream, it must be, Ryo decided. His own will seemed to have abandoned him and all he knew was Dee\'s hand along his face, drawing him closer. And then his lips were covering his own. Moving so slowly, so gently, Ryo felt intoxicated by it. Unaware of himself, Ryo moaned softly into the kiss.
Dee felt Ryo\'s moan against his lips and his control began to slip. Sliding an arm firmly around his waist, Dee forced his tongue into Ryo’s waiting mouth. God! This man felt so good beneath his touch! He needed more of him and soon his mouth crushed down on Ryo\'s, his tongue no longer caressing, but hard, demanding.
It was too much, the spell was broken for Ryo. He squirmed and twisted in Dee s embrace. Dear god! What had come over him!? What was he doing!? Stop!
\"Stop!\" Ryo gasped when he finally managed to free his mouth.
\"Dee! Deeeee!\" someone called from just outside the balcony doors. As Dee glanced back inside, Ryo took the opportunity to slip out of his grip. Just in time.
\"Dee! There you are!\" said Diana, stepping out to join them. Holding her fan up to hide her face, she smiled widely as she watched the two men. Both their faces were delightfully flushed and Ryo looked especially disheveled. \"I hope I m not interrupting, but the music\'s begun and you had promised me the first dance, Dee.\"
\"Diana, I m sure someone else will dance with you. I\'m occupied,\" he said curtly. She was taken-aback at his tone. She must have really interrupted something juicy.
\"But Dee, you promised,\" she pouted.
\"Why don\'t you get dear Mr. Rose to dance with you?\" said Dee, snidely.
\"There s no need to be mean!\" retorted Diana. Dee had hit on a particularly sore spot. Berkely Rose was a one-time suitor of hers who she had hoped would be there this evening. However, he had failed to appear, as Dee well knew.
\"I\'d be pleased to escort you to the dance floor, Diana,\" said a voice behind Dee. He looked to see Ryo standing with his hand held out. He had collected himself quickly and wanted to get out of Dee\'s presence as soon as possible. The man had a power over him and he didn\'t wish to be left alone with him again.
\"Why thank you Randy!\" Diana said sweetly, grinning triumphantly at up at Dee. And without another word they swept back inside and onto the dance floor. Dee was left cursing himself in the dark. He didn\'t like loosing control like that. Never had he lost himself in someone like he had with Ryo. It was...unsettling. Maybe Diana had done him a favor, maybe he shouldn\'t let himself get too close to Ryo.
