Red Rain

Chapter One: Stage Set, Exit Right

The phone was ringing.

With a groan, a hand snaked out from under the covers, fumbling for the cell phone that continued to ring impatiently from its place on the bedside table.

\"Hello?\" A voice, at first groggy with sleep, quickly sharpened with alarm. \"Amon? Are you alright?\"

The bed exploded in a flurry of fabric and human limbs as the occupant burst from beneath the blankets.

\"Yes, I\'m coming right now!\"

Strands of dark blonde hair hid the girl\'s face as she pulled her undergarments on, then tugged her black dress over her head. She crammed her foot into one boot, hopping around as she sought its mate, at the same time securing her clothes. A moment later she grabbed the keys which until now had been on the table beside the cell and raced out the door, the phone now eeirily silent in her other hand.

Dark eyes peered out from behind a curtain of black hair, reflecting the blue-green glow from the screen of the phone in his hand. A flick of his wrist and the light was extinguished, shrouding him in darkness. The alley he stood in was pure shadow, untouched by the streetlamp on the far side of the street, under which a silvery green car was parked. It was car car that had the man\'s attention.

A woman with dull red hair was leaning in the car window, haggling with the driver. Rain poured from the sky. No one seemed to care. A minute later the passenger side door opened, the driver leaning across to hold it open as the woman slipped inside. A quick exchange and then the engine was started, the car soon pulling away from the curb.

Yet the man did not move to follow, instead watching as a motorcycle paused at the entrance to the alley. The rider nodded, peeling off with a spray of mud and water. The watcher checked his watch, a frown creasing his forehead as he stepped from the shadows.

The darkness, like the rain, seemed to cling to him, running off his black trenchcoat as he started walking in the opposite direction of that which the car had disappeared in. His head bowed against the insistent sting of the raindrops.

Her blonde hair was plastered to her back a mere five minutes after she pulled out of the garage. She hunched over and gave second thoughts to getting a car.

It rains far too much here to use my Vespa all the time.

She squinted through the rain as she increased her speed. The road curved along the side of the mountain. She hated this road. It always made her nervous. Not mpeoppeople knew she had a fear of heights, and she\'d rather keep it that way. A glance in her mirror made her frown.

That car... it\'s been following me. She sped up a bit, only to slow down as the car pulled alongside her. She glanced in the passenger side window.

Green eyes shot wide as she saw the gun aimed at her. She slammed on the brakes, but was too late. Her body exploded with pain as the bullet went clear through her shoulder. Her Vespa swerved wildly, tossing her to the ground, where she rolled several times, before coming to a halt against the bottom of the guard rail. The Vespa gave a grand skid across the pavement and into the gravel beside her, before hitting a rock and cartwheeling over the rail.

She watched through blurry vision as her precious Vespa disappeared into the darkness below. She groaned at the ball of fire as it rose past her, tainting the rain red with its passage. The world darkened and went black.
