Prologue

Manta sat silently as the taxi transported himself and Kibo to Funbari Resort. He stared silently at the seat ahead of him, once in a while shivering nervously.

“Mom? Are you okay?” Kibo asked as she looked to Manta worriedly. She frowned when there was no answer, then looked out the window quietly. “Are we almost there?” she asked the driver.

“Just a couple minutes,” he replied.

As predicted, they pulled up in front of the hotel minutes later. Kibo lifted her overnight bag and climbed out quickly, while Manta slowly slid off the seat after paying the taxi fee, and then gathered his own bag. He closed the door, then slowly looked at the hotel.

“Man, this place seems bigger than I remember it,” Kibo said, visiting for the first time since she was seven. She looked down to Manta. “Mom, why didn’t you and Dad ever come back and live here? It’d be easier than Dad taking the train every night.”

Manta looked at the ground silently, faint memories threatening to reenter his mind.

“Manta! Kibo!” Yoh said happily as he jogged out of the hotel and over to them.

“Daddy!” Kibo called happily and tackle-hugged him.

Manta smiled while watching Yoh and Kibo hug, then slowly looked at the ground. He blinked when Yoh’s hand tilted his head up, then he looked into the chocolate eyes quietly.

“Manta-chan, it’s okay,” Yoh assured with a smile. “Nobody is going to hurt us.” He frowned slightly as Manta looked away, recognizing his beloved’s body language. “There’s nothing to be sorry for, Manta-chan. Don’t worry. It won’t ever happen again.”

Manta looked up quietly at Yoh, then looked at the ground again.

“Yoh-dono,” Mosuke said as he appeared. “Why don’t you get Kibo settled in? I’ll stay here with Manta.”

“Sankyuu,” Yoh said with a smile, then looked to Manta. “Manta, just take one baby step at a time. Don’t rush yourself,” he said with a smile, then stood up and looked at Kibo. “Let’s get you in out of the cold, shall we?”

Kibo nodded while eyeing her mother momentarily, then sighed and followed Yoh into the hotel.

Manta stood there quietly, holding the bag closely to himself while looking around nervously. It was the first time he had left Izumo in over eleven years, and he felt alienated now that he had returned to Tokyo.

”One baby step at a time,” Yoh’s words repeated in the blonde’s mind.

Very slowly Manta took one step forward, looked around nervously, and then took another step.

Mosuke watched with a smile as Manta moved towards the hotel, eventually needing less time between steps, until he finally reached the door, then slowly walked in. He stood silently for a while, afraid to leave the vicinity of the door. He stared down the hall, waiting to see one faces that haunted him appear, but none did.

Nervously he made his way down the seemingly endless hall to the bedroom he used to call his own. Slowly he peeked in and found it untouched. When he was sure nobody was in the room, he slowly went to the bed and sat on it, while staring at the blanket and pillow. Unconsciously he placed a hand over a scar on his stomach from when he was stabbed, then tears began to trickle down his face.

“Now remember guys,” Yoh said as he looked at his friends and family, “don\'t be too loud.”

“Right,” Ryu said while nodding.

“Ryu, you’re sure there won’t be any unexpected guests?” Yoh asked.

“The hotel is ours completely for a week,” he replied with a nod.

Shizuka sighed. “I dunno... Surprising him like this might be hard on him. Maybe we should postpone the party until tomorrow.”

Kibo closed her eyes with an annoyed expression. “I love Mom, but he needs to lighten up.”

“Kibo,” Yoh scolded.

“What?” she asked with confusion. “Well it’s true!”

Everybody was silent, then they looked up hearing timid footsteps.

Manta slowly looked towards the living room, holding on tightly to Sakura. After a few moments of hesitation, he forced himself to move, and walked into the living room. For a moment he looked around in confusion, then stepped further in. The room seemed strange to him, and he wondered why a table was set up in it, unless it was for guests. After a moment, he turned around.

“Surprise!” Yoh, Kibo, Ryu, Faust, Horo, Shizuka, and several other people who Manta hadn’t seen in quite some time cried as they jumped out.

The blonde jumped back shaking and confused by what was happening and looked around frantically, not recognizing some of the people. His breathing became rapid as he backed up, trying to understand what was going on, then he fell to the ground as he fainted.
