Untitled Subaru Drabble

Let the wind and ocean water
Wash across your hands
Wash away a thousand footsteps
Wash us all away
Like sand
The sky has fallen
\"Ariel\" - October Project

Subaru stands barefoot, at the icy water\'s edge, walking on the cusp of the sea and the sand. In this place there is no one to stop him; the pier is his own. Coat, boots, gloves and all discarded; only dressed in his faded jeans. He does not notice the seawater seeping in, he does not feee sae salt-sting cold lapping at his heels. His jaded eyes are only for the horizon, the dying sun, the blood-red sky. That, at least, has not changed, unlike so many other things. The sun sinks slowly into the cold dark waves, the sea holds the sunlight, looking like an endless pool of crimson spreading out as far as the eye can see.

Finally he moves slowly forwards into the dying tide that reaches for the beach like a dying man reaching for a floating piece of driftwood to keep himself afloat in order to cheat death of it\'s due. The small footprints he leaves behind him fill with each slow hiss of the waves over the sand, the beach silent and empty behind him. Every wave of the dark water, whispers up to him before retreating again, it flows over his feet like a lover\'s soft caress. In the back of his thoughts Subaru knows he cannot go back, he cannot undo what has been done.

He tilts his head back slowly as the darkness overtakes the sky, causing the blood waves to turn into inky ebony. Lifting his arms up slowly he looks at his hands, the fingers splayed out before his gaze, why he is doing this, this night of all nights he doesn\'t know-- perhaps to trace the invisible stars that gave him his name? that have broken his heart with their uncaring destiny? It doesn\'t matter, what matters is the action manages to do what everything else so far as not, soothe the ache that has grown so constent that its absence causes him to feel strangely empty. The wind and waves caress his barely clad lithe form as his fingers make love to the stars, unaware of the golden eyes that watch him from the silent shadows beyond the beach.
