*** Chapter One ***
The sky was clear and blue, uncharacteristically sunny for London, but the weather had little to do with the chill Integra Wingates Hellsing was feeling at present. She folded her arms across her chest in an unconsciously protective gesture.
So absorbed in her own thoughts was she, that she didn\'t notice the soft footsteps of Walter as he entered the sitting room, crossing the floor to stand beside and slightly bd hed her.
\"Your tea, Sir Integra?\" he murmured, proffering the steaming cup.
She took the saucer from him almost mechanically, hardly affording him a glance. \"Thankyou, Walter.\"
Walter followed her gaze out the window, though he knew from the distant look in her eyes that she was looking at nothing in particular - her thoughts were turned inward. So he merely stood beside her, hands at rest behind his back, offering his silent and calm presence as company.
After a few minutes of companionable silence, Integra spoke. \"I have always been comfortable around you, Walter,\" she said. \"Sometimes your just being there makes me feel... less alone.\"
\"You know I swore to your father that I would take care of you,\" he replied. \"Protecting the Hellsing Family and what it stands for has become somewhat a lifelong occupation of mine.\" He smiled slightly.
Integra\'s mouth turned almost imperceptibly up at the corners. Anyone who knew her less would not have noticed the change in expression. \"Actually, that\'s just what I was thinking about,\" she admitted. \"Recent events,\" she touched the scar on the side of her neck, \"Have made me realize that the family ends with me- and I\'m not indestructible. It\'s time I took up the responsibility I have to my family to continue the Hellsing line. Our missioll nll not be over within my lifetime... I cannot let my family\'s work go to waste.\" Integra took a sip of her tea, as yet untouched.
Walter inclined his head. \"A wise decision,\" he said. \"Have you given thought to a father for the child? A potential husband for yourself?\" He was quite sure he could add \'matchmaker\' to his repertoire of skills.
Integra moved from the window to her favourite armchair. She sat down, placing her cup and saucer on the small table beside it and folding her gloved hands in her lap. “I’ve thought about it, yes, Walter.” She motioned for him to take a seat in the armchair facing hers. While he sat down, she continued talking.
“He must be of reasonably noble birth, strong character, a Protestant of impeccable morals and be physically fit and healthy. He also will be the main parental contact for the child, who will be raised by a governess. I don’t have time to be a mother. Given that, he must be familiar enough with this organization to teach this child what it must know to be the Hellsing heir.”
Walter listened, taking all this down in his head. She didn’t ask for much, did she? “Have you thought about where we’re going to find such a man?” To his surprise, Integra nodded.
“I’m fairly sure,” she said, her blue eyes meeting his green ones. “Walter, I’d like you to see my physician and take a fertility test.”
Walter’s monocle nearly fell off in surprise.

“Sir Integra!” exclaimed Walter. “What on earth possesses you to choose me? Surely there is someone more suitable. I’m twice your age, for Heaven’s sake!”
Integra suppressed a smirk of amusement at Walter’s flustered ramblings. Very well, if she had to explain it to him again… “You have all the qualities I require, as well as two other very important things. Firstly, no-one other than myself has as much concern for the well-being of this family. Secondly, I am at ease with you, more so than if I had to choose someone I didn’t know and care for.”
“But you’re like a daughter to me, or at least, a niece! Whatever will people say?”
“The marriage would be a secret one,” said Integra. “Dynastic only. But this is important, Walter. I know I can count on you to help me in this.” She reached for her cup of tea and sipped, grimacing as she discovered it had grown cold. She set it aside again. “My physician will be calling this afternoon. I’ve asked him to see you.” She got to her feet, preparing to leave the room. As she passed Walter, she laid a hand briefly on his shoulder. “Thankyou, Walter. This means a lot to me.” She left, returning to her daily duties.
Walter remained in his chair a few moments. At which point did he even agree to do this? It didn’t matter. Integra and he both knew that he would lay down his life for the Hellsing family. What were a few sperm compared to that? He shook his head. Surely he was getting too old for surprises like this. It wasn’t that he was disgusted by the idea of marrying Integra; it was simply that the thought had never crossed his mind. He had never thought of her in that way. But now, as he tried to look at her in a different light, he could see that she was an attractive and sensible woman of marriageable age, and if she wanted him, who was he to refuse?
Getting up, Walter picked up Integra’s abandoned cup and saucer, to return it to the kitchen. He glanced at the mantle clock on his way out of the room. It was already noon. Time to begin the lunch preparations, and then to see Integra’s physician.
