Summary: Gojyo plays champion of justice. Sanzo manipulates some theatrics. Goku makes a confession. The Moon Order gets a new addition. Gojyo meets a young lady and his thoughts are far from his pants. Hakkai gets injured and heals a little. I tried to make up for the lack of smut with a heavier dose of humor --- please forgive me. ***Remember the AU variation in this little tale --- Hakuryuu is Kanan reincarnated and Hakkai cannot understand what she “says”. ***
I altered my style a bit, I felt the first two parts were kind of verbose and laborious to read. I hope I haven’t swung the pendulum too far. Please let me know which you prefer.
Disclaimer: I don’t own them, I’m just amusing myself until the next DVD comes out. Sigh….
Part One: Lump in the Shadows
Goku looked up at the stars. Why is it that Sanzo always insists that we can make it to the next town? He sighed. He looked over at Gojyo.
Gojyo was lying down with his feet draped over the back of the jeep. He was most definitely asleep. Goku glanced at Sanzo, he was awake. Hakkai seemed to be paying very close attention to driving. Goku looked back over at Gojyo. He did seem to be rather comfortable, Maybe he’s not so stupid. Goku twisted in his seat trying to figure out the best position for sleep and his nose caught a whiff something. “Hey, Sanzo.”
“I don’t want to hear it.” Sanzo grumbled.
“We’re almost there, Goku,” Hakkai tried to placate the young man.
“Seriously, Sanzo.” Goku whined.
“I said, I don’t want to hear it.” Sanzo grumbled back.
“Goku, you need to prepare yourself for the fact that we probably won’t be able to find a restaurant open. It’s already too late and we’re still a couple of hours away from the next town.”
“No guys, I smell blood --- THERE!” Goku pointed to a lump just on the edge of the headlights.
Gojyo’s eyes flew open. As he tried sit up, Hakkai slammed on the breaks. Gojyo’s torso slammed back down and his head smacked against something hard and metal. Damn, that hurt. As soon as the wheels rolled back, resting from their sudden stop, he snapped himself up. “That didn’t hurt all,” he tried to convince the others.
Sanzo looked at him, “Why the bravado? We know you’re a wuss.”
Gojyo did his best to act like he ignored him.
Hakkai peered into the darkness, “What *is* that?”
They looked at the brown lump and that seemed to be slithering toward them.
“Whatever it is, it’s hurt.” Goku said softly. “Hurt real bad, too.”
Gojyo hopped out of the jeep, nonchalantly rubbing the back of his head.
Goku stood up to get a better view.
Sanzo stayed seated, but watched intently, “This could be a trap.”
Hakkai stepped out of the jeep, “We’ve dealt with traps before, nothing new. What can you do?”
Gojyo watched in the dim light as a right hand gingerly and timidly crept from the lump and the fingers dug into the ground. The one hand seemed to be trying to pull rest along the ground. Gojyo looked at Hakkai, “That is either a woman’s hand or a child’s hand.”
The lump immediately froze. The fingers uncontrollably trembling. Maybe they will think I’m dead, she thought.
Hakkai knelt down beside the lump and asked the question everyone feels they must ask, but they already know the answer, “Are you all right?”
Damn, it didn’t work. The question didn’t register in her head. She just heard a voice talking to her, “I’m leaving.” They heard a wet cough come from the lump. “You can stop now.” The lump began to tremble.
Hakkai glanced up at Gojyo. Gojyo shrugged. Hakkai gingerly reached a hand out and lifted part of the brown cloth that was covering a person.
In the shadows, Hakkai couldn’t make out much, but he knew the look of terror when he saw it. She saw his face and screamed. Goku and Sanzo got out of the jeep and walked over to her. She saw feet gather around her new attacker, “Just fucking kill me already!”
Gojyo scrambled for a lantern.
She couldn’t take anymore beatings. She couldn’t absorb another hit. She couldn’t spare anymore blood. The pain, oh the pain. Hadn’t they done enough? Hadn’t the point been made? How much anger did this town possess?
Sanzo looked around in the shadows and saw a trail of blood and what looked like a make-shift crutch a few feet behind her. “We camp here tonight.” Sanzo said grimly.
She let out a breath of resignation, her face sinking into the ground. Her hand relaxed and rested on the dirt. Great, now I’m a broken fuck toy. She drew in a partial breath and spoke through the dirt in her mouth, “Have you no honor?” She knew her words would incite them. At this point, hastening her death --even if it meant more pain in the short term-- would be better than what she was facing as she dragged herself to anywhere but here.
Gojyo lit the lantern and set it on the ground beside the lump. Hakkai lifted the filthy, blood soaked cloak and they saw her looking up at them. She looked at Hakkai, Goku and Sanzo. Her lip began to quiver and tears ran down her cheeks; her face the definition of terror. Her eyes blurrily drifted to Gojyo and there they stopped. What little color was in her cheeks now left. Slowly she spoke, “You must leave. They will kill you.”
They looked down at her. Her red hair framed her red eyes. Her face was covered in dirt and blood. Her bottom lip was split on one side. Her upper lip swollen. Her left cheek cut, her right bruised. Her left eye swollen to near closure. Her right eye completely red as blood invaded the liquid orb.
Gojyo looked at the damaged face with serious intent. “Not Scarlet,” he barely whispered. The horror on the woman’s face allowed him to be only slightly relieved.
Hakkai smiled through the horror he saw in the way only he can, “You must be in a lot of pain, Miss. Maybe, we can help.”
She looked into his eyes, she saw a softness her fear wouldn’t allow her to notice before. She saw a kindness that she hadn’t seen in months. She moved her arm to try to reach a hand out to him and she felt a searing pain in her left shoulder. Hakkai saw the pain very clearly in her eyes. He saw her eyes go empty, slowly close and her muscles relaxed.
Gojyo swooped his arms under her and gently lifted her. Her body draped limply over his arms. Hakkai smoothed out a spare blanket. After Gojyo laid her down, Hakkai began to unwrap her brown cloak.
Her clothes were tattered and torn. She wore what should have been a tan, scoop-neck, loose fitting shirt. As it was, the left shoulder was torn away and hung loosely, barely covering her left breast. The sleeves were torn off just below the shoulder. There was an assortment of cuts and dark stains all over the main part of the shirt.
Her skirt should have been a dark brown ankle-length flare. There was a tear from hem to waist on the left side fully exposing her leg. There was a jagged tear across the entire skirt cutting the overall length to about her knees.
Hakkai scanned her body. She was covered in blood and dirt. There didn’t seem to be a part of her that wasn’t bruised. Her left hand was unnaturally shaped, it must be broken. Her left shoulder sat oddly. He gently traced her collar bone. Yep, broken too. Hakkai sighed. Her right arm was cut and slashed, but the bones seemed to be intact. He lightly pushed on her abdomen. That felt too firm. He looked at her left leg. Oh, that doesn‘t look right. The realization hit him, “Oh my god! How do you break your femur?” He spoke with exasperation in his voice. Her right leg looked intact, but her knee was swollen and bruised. Hakkai sat on his shins and brought a hand to his mouth. He sighed. “I-I-I can’t do this alone.” Hakkai stared at her like he was trying to complete a puzzle. He looked at her wounds and simply couldn’t wrap his mind around how it could all happen.
Gojyo stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out his crystal. He looked into the crystal, “Scarlet! Scarlet!”
Scarlet was kneeling with her head bowed at her private sacred space in her chambers. Her head jerked up with the panicked sound coming from the large oval crystal on her desk. She ran over to it and adjusted the stones, “What?”
Gojyo saw her face faintly in the dim light. “Look!” He tilted his hand and pointed the crystal at the woman.
Scarlet gasped at the pitiful sight before her. “We’re coming!” she yelled as she ran from her chambers.
“Please hurry,” Gojyo muttered as he stuck the crystal back in his pocket.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scarlet ran to Jorja’s chamber she didn’t knock before opening the door. “They need us, Jorja!”
Jorja tried to stand from her chair, using her arms to lift her out. She winced. Her head swooned. “Not this time.” She eased herself back down.
Scarlet silently nodded as she ran to get the others.
Jorja directed her eyes up, “I’m sorry.” She dropped her head, I’m failing. She cried in the darkness of her chamber.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanzo glared at Gojyo. He couldn’t believe Gojyo was so quick to call upon others. We haven’t needed them in how long? Sanzo wasn’t keen on being dependent upon anyone other than himself.
Gojyo glared back at Sanzo, “Hakkai can’t do it alone. She’s been beaten by a mob.”
Hakkai shook his head slowly, “And, a mob --- it will take --- to heal her.” Hakkai leaned over her and began to conjure some chi. Maybe, I can do something.
Sanzo looked over at Goku, who was standing with his mouth open. Goku looked up at Sanzo. Gojyo stretched his hand out and lifted Goku’s jaw. Goku closed his mouth without objection. Goku took in a breath, “Why would someone do that?”
Sanzo looked down at him, “How am I suppose to know?”
Goku blinked. “’Cause you know everything.” He looked around. “One of you always knows. Someone here is suppose to know. Someone is suppose to always know. That’s how it is.” Goku was progressively raising his voice.
Gojyo looked at him and knitted his brow.
Sanzo watched the behavior with concern.
Goku dropped to his knees and whimpered, “Someone always knows. That’s how it is. That’s how it works. You know and you tell me. Always. …. Always.”
Sanzo shook his head slightly, “Goku, don’t be childish.”
Gojyo walked to the jeep and rummaged through their gear.
Sanzo stood still watching Goku. Since when did he become so fragile? What is going on with him?
Hakkai worked furiously trying to close what wounds that he could. Gojyo had some water, a bowl and a cloth. He tried to get the dirt and blood off the unconscious body.
The jeep, now empty of its contents, transformed. Hakuryuu landed gently beside Hakkai and peeped, ‘Macabre.’
Gojyo looked over at Hakuryruu peeping so pitifully, “Ya know, sometimes I think that parrot is trying to tell us something.”
Hakkai would have chuckled if he weren’t concentrating so hard.
Gojyo watched as her wounds seemed to magically close under Hakkai’s chi. Makes me feel so… pathetic. He wrung the cloth out and began to wipe her freshly closed skin.
Sanzo sneezed. Gojyo looked up at him as Sanzo tried to act like it wasn’t him.
Gojyo snickered, “They’re here.”
Hakkai’s shoulders drooped as he rested for a bit. “It’s a good thing too.” He smiled weakly.
Mikia, Scarlet, Cassandra and Kyla walked up to them.
Sanzo looked through the shadows of the lantern light. “Where’s Jorja?”
Mikia looked at him with a stoic face, “She’s indisposed.” She shot a quick look to Scarlet and then turned her attention to the injured woman.
Cassandra knelt beside Hakkai. “Oh dear.”
Scarlet walked up to Gojyo. “What happened here?”
Gojyo looked at her. “Has something happened to Jorja?”
Scarlet glanced at Mikia and then looked at Gojyo’s feet. “No, she’s just under the weather.”
Sanzo looked at Scarlet. “With her immune system, I doubt she’s ever had a cold.”
Scarlet looked at Sanzo. “What happened here?” Her voice didn’t seem as inquisitive as before. It sounded as if she was demanding a change of subject.
Sanzo’s eyes narrowed as he studied Scarlet’s face. She’s hiding something.
Kyla walked over to Goku. Goku stood up and looked at Kyla. “Is something wrong with Jorja?”
Kyla looked at the concerned golden eyes looking back at him. “She‘s---”
Cassandra snapped at her, “Kyla! Come here! I need your help.”
Kyla turned and looked at the ground as she walked to Cassandra.
Sanzo looked at the scene around him. Hakkai, Cassandra, and Kyla were working on the limp body. Scarlet was avoiding Gojyo’s gaze while trying to get what little information she could from him. Mikia was standing strong and stoically --- too stoically. Why wouldn’t Jorja come for something so important?
Cassandra spoke up, “I think she is coming around. She’s going to be hurting.”
The woman’s eyes blinked slowly and her body began to tremble at the sight of new faces.
Hakkai smiled at her. She saw his warm safe eyes and began to calm down.
Cassandra spoke softly, “You’re in good hands now. Tell us what happened.”
The broken half-demon took in a jagged breath and froze as Scarlet and Gojyo stepped into the light. “You must leave. They will kill you.” Scarlet sat down next to her and held the unbroken hand. Gojyo knelt beside Scarlet.
Gojyo smirked, “Honey, no one kills me. I’m Gojyo. What‘s your name?”
The woman’s eyes fluttered. “Run ….run....”, her voice trailed off and her eyes went empty.
Hakkai felt for a pulse. Cassandra placed a hand over the woman’s forehead and sighed. She closed the woman’s eyes. Mikia knelt and began a death chant.
Gojyo stood up. He had seen death before, but this was disturbing. To actually witness someone’s life force leave was unnerving. In battle he didn’t bother to pay attention to the demons he dispatched. If he was going to live, he had to do what was necessary and to take time out to mourn an opponent was unwise. He remembered seeing his mother’s last moments; however, he was too hurt, too terrified and too prepared to die to see the morbid poetry in it. This left a bad taste in his mouth and a pit in his stomach. What was so horrible that she’d use her last breath as a warning to strangers? Gojyo rummaged through their supplies and found a shovel. He’d dig the grave alone if he had to.
They buried her in the grave Gojyo dug. Others had offered to dig, but he wouldn’t release the shovel. As Gojyo patted the last of the loose dirt down the others stood in silence.
Sanzo sneezed, “Damn it!” His hands clenched into fists. His mind screamed at him, Do I have to be so weak, in front of them!
Gojyo walked off from the group and stared in the direction of the town. Scarlet walked up to him and looked at him. “What are you thinking?” She was afraid she already knew the answer to that.
Gojyo’s face was held a look of seriousness that rarely rested on him. “I have an urge to visit a town.”
Scarlet sighed as she looked at Gojyo. She knew she couldn’t talk him out of it. She knew Sanzo, Hakkai and Goku couldn’t talk him out of it. Gojyo might be a letch, he might be a trouble maker, he might deflect and cover his wounds with humor, but he was also honorable. As much as he didn’t want to be, many times he was a champion of justice. She stretched on to her tiptoes and lightly kissed him on his cheek.
His knees went weak, his stomach curled in on itself. His skin shivered. His mouth let out a jagged breath. Scarlet smiled at him. “If they won’t go with you, I will.”
He shook off the effects of the fire sprite’s kiss and smiled at her. “You just gave me fantasies for a month.”
“Oh, you…” She shook her head and playfully slapped him on the shoulder.
He turned and looked at her. He put one hand on her shoulder, the other under her chin. He tilted her head up and stared into her red eyes. She looked back at him. He whispered sweetly to her, “Tell me the truth about Jorja.”
Scarlet was getting lost in his eyes, she wanted to speak but dared not. She chose silence as her answer.
Mikia took in a deep breath. Sanzo looked at her. “You still haven’t told us about Jorja.”
Mikia turned from him. “Time to leave!”
The other women turned and without another word they stepped into the darkness. Silence fell upon the men as hoof beats faded into the night.
