Part One: Reasons and Chess
Scarlet left the dining hall and saw Gojyo walking down the hallway. She stood in the middle of the hall, “Don’t you walk away from me Gojyo!”
Gojyo stopped in the middle of the hall. He pushed his hands onto his face and slid them into his . He. He took in two strong fistfuls of hair. Damn it! Why can’t people just leave me the hell alone.
Scarlet walked briskly up to him and stood in front of him. His face was partially obscured by his arms.
She was the last person he wanted to see right now. She was also the only person he wanted to see right now. He spoke from behind his arms, “I’m sorry for being a prick. This shit just pisses me off.”
Scarlet looked at the tall red-head in front of her. She sighed, “It will be ok.”
He dropped his arms and raised his voice. “Bullshit it will be ok. That little girl has lost somewhere around four years of time with her father. And, he’s lost those years with her. It isn’t right for you to make that choice for him. It isn’t right for you to decide for her. She deserves to know and so does he. God damn, loosing a parent is hard, but when your raised with a lie that’s just fucking…ga…di…” Gojyo lost his words and let out a huff. He took in and let out a sharp breath. “That’s just wrong….fucking wrong.”
“Gojyo, it’s not like that.” Scarlet looked at him with soft eyes. She could tell very clearly that he was extremely upset over this.
“What do you mean --- it’s not like that?”
Scarlet wanted to tell him the full truth, but knew she couldn’t. Especially considering his reaction to the partial news he had. She also knew that a full lie was out of the question, it was just a matter of time before he knew the whole truth and telling him a lie now would make the whole situation worse. She decided to dodge. “It’s not like we simply decided this. We thought long and hard about it all. We played out all of the options, all of the choices and given all the circumstances this is the best option. Can’t you just let it go? Thea is a well adjusted little girl, and if we do this right she will become an powerful woman. We can’t….” She noticed the far away look in his eyes and realized she’d lost him.
Gojyo stuck with ‘Can’t you just let it go?’ No, I can’t just fucking let it go. Just let it go, god damn. “I can’t believe you just said that. “
She blinked. “Which part?”
“ ‘Just let it go‘. One of these days, that girl is going to figure out that you kept her from her father and she’s not going to be well adjusted. She will be hurt and bitter.”
“When she’s old enough to be hurt and bitter she will be old enough to know that hard decisions have to be made. We are doing this for her own protection.” And, she will heal just as I have done.
“Do you know who the father is?”
Damn, there was the question of the hour. The question Scarlet had hoped she would not hear. The question she’d dreaded. The question she knew she could answer and at the same time she couldn’t answer. “Please, don’t make me answer that.” She locked her gaze on him. Her eyes pleaded with him.
“You do. You know.” He huffed and shook his head. He felt a lump in his throat. How could that face , that beautiful face , those kind hands, those warm arms know something like this and not do the right thing? How could that honorable , warrior spirit allow such a thing to go on? He remembered how she cried when Jorja was hurt. He remembered her compassion for her comrades and strangers. He remembered her tenderness. He dropped his gaze, he knew she had to be torn to pieces over this. He knew she had to have good reason.
“Please Gojyo….please” she whispered.
He placed an arm around her waist and held her close. He dropped his head forward and rested it on her shoulder. “You must have a good reason.”
“Yes, we do.” The words breathlessly escaped her mouth.
The sound of tiny rapid footsteps echoed in the hall. Scarlet opened her eyes and looked over Gojyo’s shoulder. She saw Thea running down the hall with a big smile on her face. “She’s here” Scarlet whispered.
Gojyo lifted his head off her shoulder and turned around ope opened his arms and Thea jumped for him.
He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her. He didn’t understand why he had become so enamored with the little tyke, after all Hakkai was suppose to be the one that was good with children. At this point the why’s of it all didn’t matter. He felt the tiny arms around his neck and all that mattered was this little girl’s safety and happiness. He squeezed her. A part of him wanted to surround her and protect her from all the ugliness of the world. Another part understood that it is one’s personal trials and tribulations that forms one’s foundation. He ,maybe more that anyone else, knew we only grow when we hurt. He heard the little girl squeak and realized he must have been hugging her too hard. He relaxed his arms and looked at her, “What’s all the excitement about Sheriff?”
Thea smiled big, all of her tiny teeth exposed. “He’s awake!”
Gojyo looked at Scarlet and smiled. He looked back at Thea, “Hakkai? Hakkai is awake?”
Thea nodded her head with such force that her body shook.
“Well, let’s go tell the others!” With her still in his arms, he walked back to the dining hall.
Scarlet noticed an upbeat tick to his steps. Maybe, it all will work out somehow.
Gojyo opened the door and Thea squirmed to look at the others. Thea grinned real big and yelled out, “He’s awake!”
Goku jumped up from his seat, “Alright! Did ya hear that Sanzo?”
Anyone that looked closed enough to notice, would have seen Sanzo’s shoulders drop as the tension and worry left him. He tilted his head up and wore a oh-so-subtle smile. He looked over at Goku, “How could I have NOT heard it.” He cupped his face in his hands. He sighed and dropped his hands, his normal stoic expression had returned. Why do I allow myself to worry? I know it would take a lot more than a spear to kill him.
Jorja stuck her head out from the kitchen , she wore a big grin until she saw Gojyo. She noticed who he was holding, her mind raced about what Thea now knew.
Gojyo looked over at her and passed Thea to Scarlet. He walked over to Jorja.
She locked her gaze on his crimson-eyes, “What do you know?”
He blinked and offered her a half-smile, “Nothing really. Scarlet knows how to keep secrets.”
Jorja looked over at Scarlet and Scarlet smiled warmly. Jorja smiled back, I will have to remember to grill her later. “Thank you, Gojyo.” She turned around to place the final touches on the meal. She knew Goku would be extremely hungry with the weight of worry off him.
Scarlet lowered Thea to the ground. She looked over at Gojyo and motioned for him to come to her. He smiled and walked over to her. She whispered in his ear, “Let’s go celebrate the good news, Water Sprite.”
He looked at her and a mischievous grin crept on to his face, “What do you have in mind , Fire Sprite?”
“You’ll see.” She took his fingers into her hand and slowly lead him out of the room.
Thea walked over to the table where Sanzo and Goku were sitting. She sat down in the seat directly across from Sanzo. She put her elbows on the table, curled her fingers and rested her chin on the heels of her hands. She looked at the blonde priest.
Sanzo looked up her. His eyes locked in on her miss-matched eyes.
She looked at him, looking at her. Her eyes zeroed in on his violet gaze.
Tiring of this battle of wills, he spoke flatly, “What?”
She spoke with out moving her chin from her hands. Her curls bounced while she spoke, “Why don’t you like me?” The verbal game of chess had begun.
“I never said I didn’t like you.”
“You never said you did.” That was check.
“I’m not a typical kid person.” Counter
“I’m not a typical kid.” Check again.
“What makes you so special?” Counter
Thea moved her head off her hands. She folded one fist loosely into the other. She stared at him over her hands. Her mouth was obscured by her thumbs. All Sanzo saw were light brown curls over very determined gold and violet eyes, “I bet I can kick your ass.” Check ante. te.
Goku was so wrapped up in the conversation, he hadn’t noticed the food in front of him. He now feared for Thea’s life.
Sanzo sat back in his chair and raised one eyebrow. Yes, indeed you are not a typical child. Normally, Sanzo would have challenged anyone that dared make a comment like that. He wouldn’t have let the conversation get that far with anyone else. The tyke’s intensity intrigued him.
Jorja nearly dropped the food, “Ok, which one of you taught her that?!” Her finger was bouncing back and forth between the two.
Sanzo and Thea never broke their gaze from each other. Sanzo lowered his eyebrow “One day, we shall find out.”
Thea looked at him and slowly blinked, “That day may come before you expect it.”
The re-match had been scheduled.
Jorja looked at Thea and didn’t not like what she saw in the young girl‘s eyes. “Ok young lady, it is past your bedtime.”
Thea slumped in her chair all of a sudden she was four again, “Awww, I’m not tired.” She pouted.
Jorja bent down and pulled her out of the chair and sat her feet on the ground, “That’s not the issue. Now march.” Jorja pointed at the door. “I will be visiting Cassie to make sure you are there.”
Thea shuffled out the doorway. She begrudgingly made her was to the infirmary. She’d been sleeping in there since the pains started. How dare Jorja tell me what to do. Nobody tells me what to do. No one orders me around. She knew the reprisals for direct disobedience were harsh. She really didn’t want to deal with that. She had no desire to hear yet another lecture. She decided she would go to the infirmary and she would indeed get into the bed; however, she would refuse to sleep -- until she wanted to.
Kyla came running down the hall, she passed Thea and waved. She turned into the dining hall, “He’s awake! Hakkai’s awake!”
Goku looked at the her and dropped his chopsticks. He smiled at her, “We know. Thea told us.”
Kyla’s shoulders dropped, the wind had been knocked from her sails, “Oh,” was her small reply. “How did Thea know?”
Goku shrugged, “Dunno.” He stood up and walked over to her. Sanzo couldn’t believe Goku actually walked away from food. “It’s good to see you.”
Kyla looked into his golden eyes, “It’s good to see you, too.”
He reached his arms out to her and clasped his hands around hers. “I’ve missed you.”
She smiled and gave his hands a gentle squeeze, “I’ve missed you, too.”
He quickly glanced over his shoulder and saw Sanzo and Jorja engrossed in conversation, he looked at Kyla’s feet and tilted his head. He locked his golden gaze in her green orbs, “Ummm you wouldn’t happened to have anything you’d like to show me would you?”
Kyla smiled, “Sure!” She pulled on his hands as she led him from the room. She had no idea where to go or what to show him; she’d figure it out on the way.
Sanzo shook his head as the realization that Goku walked away from food sunk into him. Jorja had made use of the chair next to him. He turned his head and looked into her golden eyes. “That’s quite a little girl you have.”
Jorja sighed, “Yes, I know. Sometimes she is so sweet and innocent and sometimes I wonder if we are harboring the antichrist.”
“Her bloodline is that powerful?” Even though Sanzo wore Buddhist robes, he was aware of the theolbehibehind other faiths.
“Ok, maybe I made use of a slight hyperbole, maybe not THE antichrist.” Jorja softly chuckled.
Sanzo heard the door to the dining room click and looked over to where Goku should have been and noticed his charge had left the room. “Damn. Now where’d he go?”
Jorja stood to clear their dishes, “He’s safe here. Does it really matter anyway?”
Sanzo looked down at his empty coffee cup, he remembered Goku’s heart-felt confession. Maybe.
Sanzo watched Jorja as she picked up the dishes. With the weight of Hakkai injuries lifted, her nature ---her special attribute --- kicked in. It had been nagging at him form the deep recesses of his mind for hours now -- maybe longer. Maybe, it had been pecking away at him since the lake --- maybe before. Damn it, he didn’t care how long. It didn’t really matter. The urges were upfront and center now. Not having full control over his own faculties was pissing him off, it also gave him a safe outlet.
He stood up and walked up behind her.
She was standing at a sink. She had scraped plates in her hand. Without looking up she asked, “Where do you want to sleep tonight?”
He stood right behind her and reached into his robes.
She felt the silk rope brush against her neck. The plates broke as they fell from her hands.
“Do you have to ask?”
