Chapter One
Mai stood outside the gate of the Kamiya Dojo where Battosai supposedly lived. He had waited for this moment for years. Now Michiru\'s death will be avenged. Vengeance would be his and soon the bastard responsible for his brother\'s death would feel his pain.
He remembered how he found out about his dear brother\'s death twenty-eight years ago. Even after all this time, Michiru’s death was still a fresh wound.
Mai, who couldn\'t sleep had taken a candle and had been outside quietly reading near dawn when his cousin, Tatsuo, showed up.
The normally calm Tatsuo was anxious and close to tears. When Mai stood up to greet him, Tatsuo started towards him in a run.
\"Mai-kun! Mai-kun! Quickly call your father. I have bad news. Very bad news. Take me to your father! We must go quickly!\"
\"What is the matter Tatsuo? But tell me on the way to the house.\"
\"I will tell your father when he comes.\"
The two boys ran quickly to the house, when they reached the house Mai called out for his father.
\"Father! Tatsuo is here. He brings urgent news.”
Mai then turned to his cousin and saw grief and rage in his cousin’s brown eyes. Tatsuo was sweating like a pig and was breathing ragged as if he ran all the way there.
A moment later Haruka, Mai\'s sire was at the door. One look at his nephew\'s expression of pain said to him the news was not good.
“Come with me to the study, Tatsuo, so we can talk in private.”
Curiously, Mai put his ear to the study door but he could not hear a word. Soon, Haruka came out muttering under his breath about something like a parent should never bury his child.
\"Father?\" Mai asked but his father\'s only answer was silence. Mai anxiously ran up to his older cousin and inquired about the news.
“Michiru, he\'s dead he got caught between-\"
“What?? No, it can’t be true! Onii-tan can\'t be dead!” Mai started sobbing.
Tatsuo held out his arms and, instinctively, the child went to them and sobbed into Tatsuo\'s chest.
All the other boy could do was pet the dark silky hair and hold the child close.
\"I was laughing and talking with him last night. Please say you’re lying. Why do you lie?”
As an answer, Tatsuo held out Michiru’s bloodstained gi.
\"It is true then?\"
Tatsuo sadly nodded
“Oni-tan why did you leave me!!!”
Mai sobbed into Tatsuo’s chest again.
For a long time, Tatsuo just held the grieving boy.
Now as Mai stood outside, so close to vengeance, he felt his pain and grief become a gentle acceptance. Yet he still wanted that bastard to suffer
