Chapter 1: Fleet of paw

He was rather unsure if he had seen her first, or if she was stalking him and decided that now would be a good time to make her presence known… It didn’t matter to him, though. He had no time for females; he was on a hunt.
“One wonders why you run without stop? You have been moving for three days now,” the female asked, startling him out of his thoughts.
He flicked his ear in mild irritation at her. “One is on a hunt; one is seeking paradise.”
She seemed to pause for a moment in mid-stride, then cocked her head at him as they ran. “Is it not lonely running and hunting by oneself?”
He thought about it for a moment, then lowered his head, never ceasing his hurried pace. “It is very lonely, but my hunt takes precedence over all else, it must be first and foremost in my mind, else I might loose the scent.”
“This one shall run with you for a while, that you might find comfort in another’s presence,” she said with a brief snort. “What name might you go by?”
He was startled for a moment, a bit put out with this strange female’s offer of companionship, then with a mental shrug accepted it as the odd nature of females. “One goes by the name of Kiba”
“Then Kiba may call this one Zephyr,” she said with a wolfish grin, keeping up with the pace Kiba had set with ease, tongue lolling out the side of her mouth in amusement.
“I will not stop for trivialities,” Kiba said, expecting dissent. He had been taught that females think very differently than males, and that they always managed to make life difficult for those males they chose to gift with their presence.
“Eating is not a triviality?” the she-wolf asked, eyes laughing. At his little wuff of assent, she continued. “Then this is fine with me. I do not mind running with one who has as thick a coat, and as fine a tail as yours.
This made Kiba a bit uneasy for some reason, and he noticed for the first time that this female, though like him, a wolf, had the most magnificent coat of reddish brown fur, and a tail at least as long as his own. For some reason this made him think of puppies and a warm den in the mountains somewhere. He shook his head to clear the thoughts from it. “You have quite a fine cooursourself, Zephyr, and I must admit that I have seen no female with a tail that found its equal in yours.”
She glanced over at him, and again he found his thoughts returning to a warm den, and lots of puppies. He looked away quickly. With his head turned, she didn’t hesitate to let out a wolfish laugh, her tongue lolling out to one side.

They ran together for a few days stopping only to eat and sleep. Kiba made sure that he shared all that he caught with her. . He didn’t know why; it just felt right to show her that he could provide meals. As they were about to pass around another town, instead of skirting wide around it, Zephyr stopped.
Kiba sat back on his haunches, wondering what it was that made her halt.
“This is where we part ways, Kiba,” she said. “One has other things that one needs do, though I welcomed your company, and will think of our run for days to come. Seek me out if ever you need my help, Kiba.”
As she ran down towards the , pr, presenting him with an excellent view of her retreating haunches, Kiba stared, as if mesmerized by the sight. And as he turned to continue on his hunt, a single word left his wolfish lips…
“Zephyr…”
