“Paging Dr. Tokiya Mikagami,” an accented female voice announced through the hospital’s communications system overhead, causing the doctor concerned to look up from his medical chart, “a phone call is waiting for you on line one. Paging Dr. Tokiya Mikagami…”
As the operator repeated the announcement, Tokiya made his way to the nearest nurse’s station with long, confident strides, his neatly braided silver hair (which caused him a few disapproving looks from the chief resident due to its unacceptable length) and his pristine white coat flapping gracefully behind him. Carefully placing the chart on the table before him, he picked up the phone and pushed a button to take the call, wondering who in the whole of Sydney, Australia would suddenly call him up.
“Hello,” he apathetically said in customary greeting.
“Moshi moshi, Mikagami-sensei,” a familiar ebullient voice warmly answered him in his mother tongue. Quick recognition lit his stoic face, his mood turning lighter as he spoke to one of his long time high school friends.
“Fuuko-san,” he acknowledged the person on the other line, mild surprise lacing his voice as he reverted to his first language. “Where are you?”
“The airport,” she answered brightly, “I just arrived from Mali.”
Mali? In Western Africa? “I see you’ve been chasing wild animals again. How fitting,” Tokiya drawled sardonically. While he moulded himself into becoming a physician, and was now studying Surgery on his residency, Fuuko had chosen to pursue a career in photography. And became quite successful in the said field. Now working as one of National Geographic’s Professional Wildlife Photographers, she travelled from one country to another, taking pictures of different species, endangered or otherwise, on both easy and difficult assignments. Her job fit her well, Tokiya thought, for he knew Fuuko Kirisawa could never stay in one place for so long. She was careless and free. Like the madougu she possessed.
Fuuko gave an unladylike snort on the other end of the line. She was used to Tokiya Mikagami’s sharp tongue so she didn’t take any offense at all. He had been like that since high school anyway, which was almost a decade ago. “And you never changed, Mi-chan,” she said, enunciating the last two syllables slowly and deliberately, and grinned. She could imagine her former comrade wince at the nickname she had bestowed on him way, way back. “You busy?”
“I just finished my rounds,” he answered and checked his pager. There was no message. “I’m entitled to a fifteen minute break.”
“Great!” she replied, relieved that she wasn’t bothering him at work. Much. “Are you on duty?”
“Tonight, yes.” And then he sighed. He already had an idea why the monkey suddenly called him up after long months of no communication.
A soft chuckle reverberated through the earpiece. “I’m sure you know why I called. So… can I?”
A place, he thought. She needed a place to stay for the night while she’s in Sydney. Again. The arrangement she was appealing to, he had to admit, albeit grudgingly, didn’t bother him at all. Fuuko had always stayed in his condominium unit whenever she was in Sydney. Tokiya couldn’t remember when it all started but Fuuko asking him for small favors was just so customary and natural, ever since their high school years, that he had always allowed her to do as she pleased. As long as it didn’t bother him much.
Fuuko Kirisawa had stayed three times in his penthouse suite the year before. And as if some unknown force was on his side, Tokiya was blessedly always on duty whenever she stayed overnight in his unit. He never saw her once in those three instances for whenever he came home from the hospital, she had already left on another assignment.
“And if I refuse?”
Fuuko laughed outright then. “But you love Fuuko-chan too much to say no,” she said playfully.
“You wish,” Tokiya scoffed, but a slight smile tugged at the corner of his lips, breaking the usual indifferent expression on his face. It was kind of… nice… to talk to someone he knew from his past again. Her laughter continued to ring on his ears. The slight tilt on his mouth was threatening to break into a full smile at Fuuko’s contagious mirth.
Eventually, she sobered up. “Anno, Mi-chan, you’re not expecting company tonight, are you?” she paused, a little unsure. Tokiya could almost see her biting her lower lip, a habit he noticed she had practiced back in Japan. “I… uh… I’d rather not have a repeat of last time.”
Tokiya’s smile disappeared as he closed his eyes, a tinge of red slashed across his cheekbones, as he recalled what his friend was pertaining to. On the other line, Fuuko flushed as well as she remembered what happened during her last stay in Sydney.
It was exactly the 13th of November of last year that she had asked, once again, for the favor. As usual, Tokiya nonchalantly gave her the go signal. What they both did not anticipate was that his girlfriend during that time, a nurse who worked in the same hospital, had decided to ‘surprise’ him on his 26th birthday. And, unfortunately, it was Fuuko who received the full brunt of it when she opened his bedroom door and found a butt-naked woman lying on a rose petal covered queen-sized bed, her legs so wide open that she had practically seen her entrails. The woman shrieked when she realized a complete stranger entered the room and dived beneath the covers. Fuuko apologized profusely and quickly stepped out of the room, her face as red as a tomato at the thought of what would undoubtedly have happened if it was Tokiya who came home that night and not her.
Fuuko had paced around the spacious living room, waiting for the woman to come out so that she could explain tonight’s situation, probably apologize again, and kick her out of the suite as politely as possible since Mi-chan wasn’t coming home that night. But all attempt at courtesy vanished when, a few minutes later, the woman barged out of the room, fully clothed, and angrily demanded who she was. Fuuko, who decided not to match the woman’s fury, calmly replied that she was Tokiya Mikagami’s friend and that she was to stay in his suite that night. But the woman, seemingly possessed by humiliation, insecurity, and betrayal, had lashed at her and accused her of being an ugly, shameless hussy who was after her Tokiya.
Fuuko, not known for patience, especially when it came to someone rudely judging her physical features, suddenly encountered the virtue face to face that fateful night and tried again to explain. She even dangled the key Mi-chan had given her a couple of years ago in front of her as proof. Instead of pacifying her, it had the opposite effect. The other woman took it as an insult as she narrowed her eyes at her and Fuuko had the distinct feeling that she was going to physically attack her in anger. Not that Fuuko was afraid since she knew she was far stronger than the slip of a woman in front of her. And it seemed that the same thought occurred to the hysterical woman. She stepped back, looked her over from foot to head in disgust, and left the suite in a huff.
Fuuko never felt so insulted before in her life. That woman hurled false accusations at her face, called her an ugly, shameless hussy, and dared to look at her as if she was beneath her feet, all in one night! No one had ever done that to her before. She wanted to kill her. Or at least break that exquisite yet obvious medically altered nose of hers. The next day, she had learned from Tokiya when she called the hospital that the nurse broke up with him that morning, not only humiliated but also furious at the fact that another girl had a key to his suite aside from her. If the nurse had hoped for an explanation and a sweet reconciliation, then she didn’t know her former boyfriend much.
Tokiya Mikagami didn’t like explaining himself. And most of all, he didn’t really care, so he let the relationship end. Fuuko didn’t feel bad at all when she heard about the nasty break-up. In fact, she was delighted a woman like that was out of his life. She had half-told, half-scolded him that he was better off alone than with a deranged, hysterical woman and that he should find someone who knew how to love him properly the next time around. She also advised him to choose really well for probably the hundredth time in that short phone conversation that Tokiya’s head had actually hurt. She was in the airport that time too; ready to leave for Japan as she waited for her flight number to be called. He coolly assured her that he wasn’t going to jump onto another relationship anytime soon.
Nodding her head in agreement, the photographer took his rather brief and cold acceptance of what had happened to heart and greeted him a happy birthday. She was sure she was never going to forget the said date because of the embarrassment and anger she had experienced during that time. Tokiya thanked her and, to her surprise, told her softly that what she did was the best birthday present he received. Before she could ask about it, he already hung up.
“I’m not seeing anyone right now so you’re safe from any surprises that might come your way,” Tokiya answered and Fuuko could almost see the nonchalant shrug in his deep voice.
She breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s good to hear.”
“Is it?” Tokiya couldn’t resist baiting her, “I would have thought you’d enjoy a spectacle such as that.”
“Hey! Seeing girls throwing themselves at your feet back in high school was entertaining. But seeing one practically open her legs for you was…” she trailed off; embarrassed at the subject they were talking about.
“Highly arousing, wasn’t it?” he lowered his voice so that the nurses around him wouldn’t hear.
Fuuko gasped as something warm enveloped her body at the sound of his low seductive tone. Wait a minute, this was Mi-chan! He can never be seductive! That living block of ice? What in the world was she thinking? “Who are you and what have you done to Mi-chan, you hentai?!” she demanded instead.
The doctor laughed lightly and decided to drop the subject before it got completely out of hand. “You better buy some stuff and stock up before you go home. I think I’m getting low on food.”
“Right,” Fuuko replied, “thanks for telling me. And for letting me stay again.”
“Just don’t burn the place down.”
“I’m not Recca.”
“Don’t leave the place messy then,” he reminded her, fully aware of how a slob she can be.
“I’m not Domon,” she huffed. “Besides, I always leave your penthouse clean. In fact, I leave it in better shape than it was whenever I arrive.”
True, he had to admit. “Just don’t forget to lock everything up when you leave tomorrow.”
“Uh… about that, Mi-chan,” she paused, “you see, I—“
“Hold on,” he cut her off when he felt his pager vibrate on his hip. He took the little gadget from his belt and read the message. He cursed darkly as he slipped it back to his pocket and resumed the conversation. “Listen, I have to go. I’m needed in the O.R.”
“B-But, Mi-chan…”
“Ja matta,” he said before he hung up.

Tokiya Mikagami sighed as he unlocked the door to his home. A yet another long day ended and he was so very glad. He had been up for over 72 hours, running around the hospital, trying to save lives because of a railway accident that occurred on the vicinity of the city two days ago. There were a lot of people who got hurt, some with broken bones and lost appendages, the others with burns of varying degrees, and a few more escaped with minor injuries. His team was able to save a lot of lives. But there were some who weren’t so lucky. The situation, thankfully, stabilized on the third day. And now, he just wanted to lie down and sleep forever. But first…
Heading straight for his bedroom, he threw his clutch bag on the sofa and proceeded to unbutton his polo. A nice hot shower would be best for aching muscles right about now, he thought as he walked toward the en suite bathroom. Not bothering to close the door behind him, he undressed and stepped inside the shower stall and flicked the tap on. Water sprayed on him on six different directions as he sighed underneath the relaxing warmth.
Almost half asleep, he finished his shower and stepped out of the stall. He wrapped a towel loosely around his slim hips and grabbed another one to dry his hair. As he did so, he stepped into his room and paused by the foot of the bed. Sensing that something was different, he looked up toward the open bedroom doorway and found himself staring at the most beautiful blue-eyed woman he’d ever seen standing in the hallway, staring at him as well. Their gazes met and Tokiya suddenly found himself breathless at the sight before him.
Who are you? He meant to ask but no sound came out of his mouth.
Her long purple locks resting carelessly across her narrows shoulders, she was garbed in a simple white shirt and faded denim shorts, her clothing somewhat diminishing the ethereal quality about her yet enhancing her exquisiteness. How that was so, he couldn’t explain. Yet, there was something familiar about her. Something…
She’s an angel, he decided, an angel that he could reach yet could not hold.
Tokiya berated himself on such a fanciful thought. But he found himself liking the concept of an unearthly being standing just inside his room. Until she opened her mouth and ruined the illusion.
“Mi-chan?”
E-Eh? He thought dumbly.
“Mi-chan!” she exclaimed again. Tokiya watched both in fascination and in horror as the so-called tenshi rushed toward him in an inhuman speed and jumped him.
Fuuko, he thought belatedly as he automatically caught her and stumbled backwards, landing unceremoniously on the bed with her sprawled on top of him. What the hell was she doing here?
