Running as fast as he could despite his lethargy, Kyo wondered how long it would be before he transformed at this pace and stress to his body.
Rule one when you’re cursed by the zodiac, don’t over exhaust your body or you will transform. He was definitely exhausted, and the rain bucketing down made him feel even worse. Unable to keep running he stopped, doubling over as his lungs screamed for air. Staring at the string of black and white beads around his wrist his mind flicking back to why he was out here.
“Be quiet you stupid cat.”
“Why don’t you make me you damn rat?”
“Now you two don’t start this again.”
The usual fight the usual arguments and curses thrown at each other. Tohru’s friends Hana and Uo were over again that day so everyone was on guard to make sure there were no transformations. No one could have seen this was going to happen, nobody could have predicted it.
“I\'m not the one making all the noise Kyo.” Retorted Yuki in the same calm manner he always used staring at him over the cards fanned in his hand. The first slight patter of rain hit the roof stopping Kyo’s retort before it began.
“Oh rain. I felt like it would rain today.” Came the deadpan voice of Hana as she looked out into the yard.
“Perhaps it would be best Kyo if you left this one to another time. With it raining and all you wouldn’t want to be beaten that badly would you?” lightning flashed in the distance warning of things to come.
“That’s it I’ve had it with you.” He jumped up from the table ready to attack Yuki.
“What are you going on about?” Yuki’s calm manner drove him even further beyond caring what happened.
“You know damn well what I\'m talking about…”
“Umm Kyo, do you want some lunch?”
“WHY THE HELL DO YOU CARE?” he turned on Tohru and instantly felt horrid for it. He always did that, always lashed out at whoever was there at the time, all because of that damn Yuki.
“That’s not what I meant, its just… yeah sure I could do with something to eat.” He finished in a mumble.
“Awww look Kyon-Kyon is trying to be nice,” teased Uo, ruffling his hair.
“Damn it don’t call me Kyon-Kyon you stupid Yankee.” Pulling back to dislodge her hand from his hair was the worst mistake. Forgetting the table was behind him he stepped backwards to escape her. His heel hit the low table throwing him of his feet. From there everything went in slow motion, taking years for it to end. As he fell backwards Uo made a grab for him to stop him from falling not wanting him to get hurt from her teasing, every one else just stood and stared in shock.
That’s when things went really bad.
Uo chose his arm to grab but missed he felt her fingers hook on his beads, as his momentum carried him still downwards he prayed her fingers would slip lose. He tried to grab them as they slid off his wrist he really did but they were sliding off over the back of his hand so it was pointless. His back hit the table just as his body convulsed with the first spasms that started the change.
He heard Tohru gasp and moved as Hana made some comment about electric waves. His blood pulsed through his ears as his body began to contort and stretch. The pain was always immense but over the years he had gotten so used to it that he didn’t even really feel it any more. He merely waited it out, knowing there was no point in fighting it, without the beads to hold him human, it was inevitable.
Breathing heavily by the end of it, he was on his hands and knees when he lifted his head, he was hoping above all else that Hana and Uo had been shoved out of the room. There was no luck to that wish since they both stood with the same look of horror on both of their faces. Uo’s hand was still out stretched from where she had attempted to stop his fall, hanging from her fingers were his beads. Fear and anger coursed through his body. Surveying the room as he got to his feet all hope was destroyed.
Tohru looked scared, Shigure looked disappointed and annoyed, like it was Kyo’s fault that it had happened, and that damn rat Yuki was in a state of shock. As quick as he could he spun, snatching his beads from Uo and bolted for the door and out into the rain which was getting heavier by the second. Back in the house he heard someone run to the door and Tohru calling his name but he didn’t stop, he couldn’t. So he simply ran, beads clutched tightly in his hand until he had gotten far enough away from the house, where he slipped them back on. Even as he changed back into his human self he didn’t stop. He just kept running, the same guilt, loathing, and shame he always felt inside him as he ran.
Another crack of lighting flashed through the sky above him as he rubbed at his eyes, trying desperately to stop the tears that he could feel prickling his eyes. With only a pair of pants on since his shirt laid in shreds amongst the broken table back at Shigure\'s, the cold was quickly eating into his skin, chilling him to the bone. Getting back to his feet with some difficulty he continued to walk away from Shigure\'s house, knowing he could never go back. Not after what had happened, how could he have been so stupid to let it happen, he should of thought before his stupid anger got the best of him. Kyo wrapped his arms around himself trying to get a little warmth to protect himself against the blistering cold of the rain.
He continued to walk even when the world began to vanish behind black spots before fading back into sight every now and then. Thunder roared over head and the rain pelted down even harder, Kyo’s body shook violently from the cold and exhaustion that plagued him. Losing his footing on the next step he slipped in the mud and fell to the ground knocking the wind out of him. Laying there in the mud with the rain pouring down on him like some cruel joke the fate played another trick on him, he transformed into the cat. He lay there for a while gazing up into he sky as the rain fell onto his fur and soaked straight through. He cursed the world for what it had done to him, he cursed everyone for the way he was and how it would always be.
“Everyone’s probably having a great time now… without me” dragging his legs underneath him he forced himself to his feet. Thankful for the one simple fact that cats didn’t have tears he forced himself to keep walking, disregarding his pants and leaving them where they had fallen.
