Disclaimer: I do not own Pet Shop of Horrors, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
This is a little bizarre, but I will be totally revamping and rewriting Lonely in Your Nightmares. I deleted the last one because I was absolutely dissatisfied with it. There’s definitely going to be some changes and things are going to move a little slow, but please bear with me. I am sorry to all of those who reviewed me, I lost all of your wonderful reviews >.< I still carry them with me and it really pained me…but I wanted to make this better. Hopefully now that all of the mangas have been released and I have way more knowledge than before it should be more interesting and accurate.
Legal Stuff/Disclaimers:
I do not, or claim to, own Pet Shop of Horrors (aside from the original characters). D, Leon, Jill, Q-Chan/Sofu D, Tet-chan, Chris, the captain and etcetera, belong to Matsuri Akino.
Rating: for now I want to say R I will gradually move into the NC 17.
Part I:
The elapse of many lifetimes has been no more than, haply, meager intervals in the space which is my eternity. What have I accomplished with this measure of duration, little, as I am bound by a thespian role in life, to appear ungodly and mortal to the humans I have come to share this world with. I have established, in my own mind, immortality as a grievous burden, I feel this so deeply and so much more than my kami brethren, because I have made attachments to this world…on such a great level that one could call it vehement desire! Our kind were once priests and priestesses hailing from ancient China, immortal but not invincible, we seem nothing more than average, if not beautiful Chinese creatures.
Other attributes that confuse the humans are my crimson lips and impossibly pale skin. I often catch short transitory views of my customers looking at me in wonder as if they are thinking “is it makeup or is it a part of him”…hmm. My speed and strength often dazzle those who are easily bewildered. I’ll give you a prime example, Leon Orcot. Leon who once said: “All Chinese people can fly right?”
Leon was a very boisterous young man zealous and firm in his accusation as well. The most beautiful and guileless human being I have ever met. He has the will to believe and not to acknowledge at the same time. My Los Angeles detective, having the same spark as an actor would posses. I not only admire him, but fatally I am in love with him. My surreal fantasies I kept this hidden from him in the depths of my being. Am I a romanticist or a dreamer perhaps? Which is something of a taboo amongst my people, for we cannot fall in love, however the three years I had with “my dear detective,” were some of the most insightful ones.
At the time our only ties were the pet shop that I was obligated to run. My dear detective believed it was nothing more than…how did he put it? Ah yes, “a cover for drug dealing, white slavery, and arm shipments,” how far from the truth, but let him keep his delusions…if they continued to bring him back. The detective, however, was not entirely incorrect in assuming that all the strange and unusual deaths had a connection to the pet shop I owned. It was, shall I say, the family business…
I always imparted to my customers exactly what they wish for in a pet, personified desire, and sell them to the crippled links in society. So in bizarre way the detective and I achieved the required results, I delivered punishment where his would not suffice. It is proof that the supernatural should not be taken lightly. Each time a customer was marred by their own execution it was their problem and their fault. To prevent any legal action to be taken against the pet shop a contract had been signed to make the agreement legal and unbreakable. My shop was not liable for the damage and my dear detective frequently had no case. Is that not what a contract is for?
Now I have flown my Los Angeles retreat and my beloved detective…the moment my father was taken was the moment I vowed revenge. It was petty I would never carry out such a thing as to follow in the footsteps of my own father. I could never bring harm to Leon…it pained me to sail away…far away…and now I have once again settled in a new town not so different from the Chinatown I started out in originally.
I apologize for over dramatizing the beginning, I simply wished to prepare you for what lies ahead. Proceed, if you will, with this account and be dazzled or dismayed.
Chapter 1
It was a freezing cold, snowy day in Nevada and Chinatown was not as busy as it normally would have been were the weather different. Snow was falling quick and heavy, as it had been for several days. The sun would barely peek through the clouds when another evil snow cloud would come rolling in waves across the sky blocking its warmth, the weather pattern seemed so strange…
'Yes strange indeed,' D thought as sat on his settee in a chamber located toward the back of the pet store. Everything in the chamber had been fashioned in an oriental manner. The settee and matching chairs with their sparsely placed lotus blossom prints, gold characters, and pastel trimmings. The arms and legs of the furniture were carpentered in fine polished wood. Downy soft imperial pillows carefully placed on the settee, which was now inhabited by a confused, and rightly so, Count. D stared blankly at the coffee table before him, not even the spread of sweets and tea before him could drag him out of his perplexed state. Tet-chan, who eyed him wearily through the ivory curtains, became rather concerned, to some extent, about D.
'He’s probably thinking about that damn stupid, annoying detective, even after all this time,' Tet-chan mused bitterly to himself. He loved D more than that man thing ever could! So why on earth would D choose an idiot of a human over himself?
He watched the Count lift one of the tea cups to his deep red lips. He watched as D’s lips closed on the edge of the porcelain cup. He thought the candles flickering ominously gave an erotic effect to the entirety of D’s unknown display.
“Tet-chan, are you aware that the type of weather we are having is strangely disturbing?” D inquired.
“No I… I wasn’t” that silky voice surprised him. He was grateful to hear it and that it was just for him. Then D simply smiled and that was good too. That same hypnotic smile, though he’d only seen a genuine smile on the Count’s face once before…and it was not for him.
All too suddenly, for Tet-chan’s liking, Q-chan came fluttering in squeaking his usual optimistic arrival. “Kyu kyu” and then there was a shroud of smoke.
A young hooded man, strikingly similar to D, replaced the small babbit. The young man with D’s appearance came forward into the candle light. The hood shadowing most of his features, but his lips were visibly turned up into a slight ruby smirk, not so unlike D.
“Please, grandfather, have a seat,” D invited.
“Yes, thank you. Tet-chan, might I have a moment alone with my grandson?” Sofu-D requested. Tet-chan complied with a disapproving groan.
“Thank you Tet-chan,” D gave him a small and gracious smile that made Tet-chan shiver with excitement. He, then, returned to the front of the pet shop to keep an eye on the pets, though he seemed reluctant.
“He is very jealous, you know. If it hadn’t been for your constant intervention I believe he would have torn your detective friend to pieces,” Sofu-D smiled deviously “You’re still thinking about the past? You truly are a fool. Tet-chan would make a much better suitor for you…at least he‘s not human…”
“Is this what you came here to bring to my attention? I truly hope not,” D snapped with a bit of sarcasm on his tongue.
“Forgive me, I thought we’d talk about a lighter subject…such as the beautiful weather we are having,” Sofu-D retorted with no less sarcasm.
“This weather is a direct result of Liu-Sheng’s resurrection. He is already gathering followers. Weak minded humans, corpses, animals. They all posses enough spirit to revive his cryptic army,” D curled his hand beneath his chin “If he is allowed to continue the human race will become extinct.”
“True…he was after all a great admirer of your late father,” D’s grandfather pointed out, “It will be the humans who suffer, not us. They are a weak species at best, and this is our rightful revenge.”
“Yes true, the mortal beings will suffer while we hide. Protected by our own world and power,” D hung his head in sorrow, he was well aware that his father had a great influence on others of his kind and a few became just as bitter with the human race as he was. D had never really, at least until recently, understood that there were others, “This is a terribly possible scenario, are you saying we do nothing Grandfather?”
A moment of awkward silence passed between them, “Grandfather!”
In a shaken, but steady voice came Sofu-D’s soft reply, “You are a fool child and you place all of our lives and our way of life in danger. You see yourself as a romantic hero, but your intentions are selfish….they deserve no less after all.”
“And are you too perfect! Tell me is this an omen? Do you know how or why Liu-Sheng has come to be resurrected? Does he intend to follow my father’s example? Tell me if you know of such things!” D was stopped abruptly by his grandfather’s anger.
“Why should I know? Do you? Do you think you can fight an immortal army by yourself? Do you even have the resources to track him down? I warn you child if you put our lives in danger the others will strike you down!” Sofu-D glared at his grandson before turning to leave.
D slumped, miserable, into his settee. It was true, there were very few of their kind left and the only ones D had ever known had been his merciless father and mysterious grandfather. With a barely audible sigh he allowed his thoughts to wander back to his detective…
'Your detective?'
'Yes, it is simply a matter of time before he realizes this as a fact.'
'Foolishness! I swear you grow more and more like these humans every day! I want to make it perfectly clear to you, humans come and go. Your “detective” will one day go too! So why don’t you let go of this foolishness…'
“Let go…If it were so simple…” His memories of his grandfather’s previous mockery depressed him now, but a part of D knew he was right. Sitting somberly under the florescent light the Count longed for that bright smile or disagreeable scowl not caring which.
“Count? I have some bad news…”
“Another broken contract, Tet-chan,” D sighed.
“Yeah,” He replied, “Count… why do you let yourself be tormented by that human, I don’t understand.”
D smiled sadly, “Do not concern yourself…”
“But!”
“I said don’t!”
“R-right…sorry, I shouldn‘t have asked,” Sounding sincere, but bitterness could be heard in his tone, 'damn you detective!'
“Jealousy is very unattractive and not very becoming, Tet-chan”
“Of course Count D”
