Chapter 1
Neo-Queen Serenity gasped as she ducked into the nearest door she could find, quickly shutting it behind her as she hid in the darkest corner of the heavily shadowed room. Breathing heavily, she shut her eyes and leaned back against the wall behind her. She couldn’t believe that she had been reduced to this; hiding just to find a tiny smidgeon of peace. It seemed that everywhere she went, two or three people were right behind her, asking her questions about where the guests from whichever planet should be situated, whether or not she would be going to tomorrow’s training, and so on. It was impossible to find a moment or two of complete and utter silence.
Which was why she had ducked into the nearest available room when she espied one of her friends coming down the hallway. She so did not want to have to answer yet another question. All she wanted was a little peace and quiet. Was that so much to ask?
Sighing, Serenity moved from the corner when she did not hear anything. She listened carefully, making sure that no one was tiptoeing down the hallway, before moving towards the window. Finally, she was alone.
Crystalline blue eyes danced with happiness as she curled up on the window seat; her dress folding gracefully as she settled into position. It was a wonder how graceful she had become since the establishment of Crystal Tokyo so many years ago. Even though the memories of her infamous klutz attacks were dusty and out of use, she could still feel the difference between her past and present self. It was if she had finally become whole. When she had been Tsukino Usagi, she had felt as if some part of her had been missing, but when she had become the exalted Neo-Queen Serenity everything had fallen into place, much like a jigsaw.
Focusing on the grounds below the window, she noted the beauty that adorned the area surrounding the palace. So much beauty and it had all been brought about by the peace that she had established. Well, the peace that they all had established, for she hadn’t done it all by herself. Her Senshi had been her strong support through all the difficulties leading up to the establishment of Crystal Tokyo.
Speaking of her Senshi, here they were. Serenity grinned slightly as she watched a few of them gather in a circle. Minako obviously must have informed the others of her disappearance. Watching as Rei and Makoto began arguing, Serenity thought about how lucky she was to have such good friends. They would stand up for her no matter what, and even if they drove her crazy she would do the same.
Pondering the events that had led to her current role as queen, a small frown crept over her countenance. Hmm, it was hard to believe that it had cost them so much to obtain this precious peace. They had suffered so much, but in the end it had been worth it. However, despite the fact that she was living in what people were beginning to call the Crystal Millennium, in remembrance of the crystal’s power and the previous millennium that had been consumed by evil, Serenity found that she could not enjoy the fruits of her labor.
She could not enjoy the endless amounts of diplomacy, the peace and quiet that came from her daughter visiting the past, or the lack of youmas. She could not enjoy the peace. Even though most of her days were crammed full with meeting after meeting, she found that she was, well, bored. Serenity needed some excitement, but she didn’t know how she would get it. And in all her rushing about she had not had time to think about it, which was why, when seeing the opportunity, she had jumped into this room to examine her feelings.
Horrible, but true.
Watching the senshi talk to one another, Serenity wondered if she could let them in on her thoughts. Maybe she could tell them that she dreamed of doing something drastic just to have a little more fun in her life.
On second thought, maybe she shouldn’t. After all, they were her guardians, and there was only so much they could take, possible danger to her person not being one of them.
So what could she do? She couldn’t really go out and pull a prank, because her friends were all wise to her schemes by now, and she definitely couldn’t pull one on a diplomat, no matter how much she longed to. Hmm, maybe she could go on a trip. Yes, that seemed like a good idea. However, the only place she really wanted to travel was to Kinmoku, and they were still in the middle of reconstruction. She was extremely hesitant to disturb them, since she knew how difficult it had been in the beginning days of Crystal Tokyo.
Shaking her head slightly in consternation, Serenity put her chin in hand as she gazed out the window and thought of the possibilities. What could she do? There was really nothing to do. Everything that she wanted to do she had only been able to do in the past, and it wasn’t like she could jump into the Time Gates and…
Her face brightening visibly, Serenity grinned. That was it! She would do what her daughter had done! She would travel to the past! It was all too simple. But, she mused, thoughts scrambling to put themselves in a logical order, she would have to be careful. She couldn’t tell her senshi what she was going to do because they would stop her. No doubt about that. Also, she couldn’t travel back as herself. Setsuna would be more than a little unhappy if she did, because it would be more than a little wrong if her past self knew too much about her future. No one should know too much about their own destiny, especially with how much she had already known back then. No reason to add more fuel to the already large fire.
So, she would go to the past, and she would have to go in disguise. Maybe she should use the Luna Pen? It had served her well before, but…only for short amounts of time. Serenity planned to be there for at least a few days, and the pen definitely couldn’t hold out for that long. Hmm…she could use the crystal. It would only take a small amount of energy to do it.
Tilting her head in thought, Serenity went through the finer details. If she used the crystal how would she disguise herself? It had to be someone familiar to the senshi, because she didn’t want to room with a stranger. And she couldn’t disguise herself as someone who was around all the time; it would cause some identity issues to arise, and she really didn’t want to make them think that there was another youma. Hmm….maybe she should take a leaf out of her own book. Well, her ultimate form’s book, anyway. She could become a mini version of herself.
She could become ChibiChibi.
Eyes narrowed slightly, Serenity leaned against the window. If she became ChibiChibi and went back to the past, nobody would be alarmed, plus she would be able to stay with the senshi. And if she left a note before she went back in time, she wouldn’t disrupt anyone here. Yes, it was the perfect plan.
All she had to do was to put into action. Tonight. She would leave tonight, and make her way to what hoped to a very enjoyable time in the past.
Meanwhile….
Tsukino Usagi eyed her friends quietly as she slurped on a chocolate milkshake. Here they were, at the arcade again, enjoying the peace and quiet after the vicious battle with Galaxia. It had been a few months since that horrible time, and she had spent most of that time relaxing with her friends, and, unfortunately, with her future brat of a daughter.
Sure, she loved the kid, but lately she had developed a taste for pulling pranks. It was really quite annoying, because no matter where she went Usagi had to watch her back. Whether in her room, school, the shrine, or the arcade Usagi had to check everything to make sure she wouldn’t be victim of a prank. Thankfully though, she wasn’t the only one who had to be careful. All of the other senshi employed the same precautions, and they had begun to grumble quite ominously about the never ending stream of pranks.
Oh well. They could grumble all they wanted, but Usagi knew that her daughter wouldn’t quite anytime soon. They would all just have to suffer.
“Usagi, what do you think?” came Makoto’s voice, startling Usagi out of her train of thought. Dazed Usagi blinked slightly, wondering what on earth they were talking about. “About what?” she asked, deciding that there was no graceful way to get out of looking like a complete ditz.
“About the soccer captain! Don’t you think that he’s completely gorgeous!?” squealed Minako, stars appearing in her eyes, as she clutched her own milkshake to her in rapture.
Blinking rapidly, Usagi attempted to clear the cobwebs from her mind. “Umm…sure, Minako. He’s really cute,” she said, trying to remember exactly who they were talking about.
“Cute!? CUTE!? Are you insane!? He’s absolutely gorgeous!!” Rei exclaimed, throwing a look of extreme incredulity at Usagi.
“Oh, okay,” squeaked Usagi, not really knowing what to say about the supposed cuteness of a guy she had never met. There was silence after her statement as she watched all of her friends gaze starry-eyed into space. Shrugging, Usagi went back to her shake, beginning to slide back to her former train of thought.
She was stopped, however, by Ami. Apparently, the first to recover her senses, she asked Usagi how everything was going lately,
“What do you mean, Ami?” she asked, slowly putting her shake down, giving her friend her full undivided attention.
Ami paused, taking a slow sip of her shake before continuing. “How have you been feeling lately?” she asked, her dark blue eyes focusing on her friend.
“Well, good, I suppose,” said Usagi, thinking about all the changes that had been occurring to her since Galaxia’s defeat. “I mean, I’m beginning to feel more like Serenity. I’m more graceful; I haven’t crashed into anybody in over a week. And, I feel like everything’s beginning to click into place.”
“Really?” asked Makoto, joining in on the conversation. “I’ve been feeling like that too. Have you gotten all of your memories yet?” she asked, nose wrinkling in concentration.
Usagi furrowed her brows slightly in thought. “I think so. I may be missing a few memories because a few memories are still somewhat unclear. What about you, Ami?” she asked, turning her eyes up her friend.
“Well, I believe I have all my memories. Yet, it does feel as if something is, well, missing,” she finished in a curious tone, mind quickly formulating all of the possibilities.
“Same here,” said Rei, eyeing the rest of Makoto’s shake, since she had just finished hers. “And though I feel like I’m slowly becoming complete, I also feel like something important is coming.”
“Really,” asked Minako, sounding serious for once. “Like what?”
“I don’t know, but it must be why we are slowly changing into our past selves,” said Rei, attempting to grab Makoto’s shake, only to be stopped mid-grab by her friend’s fast reflexes.
“I agree,” Makoto said, grinning at her victory. “It feels as if we are getting ready for an important change.”
Ami nodded in agreement as she typed on the keyboard of her minicomputer. “All of you are right. There is a massive change heading our way,” she said, turning the screen of the computer around to face the others. “See this?” she asked, pointing to a picture of the Earth. “This shows the difference between the Earth a hundred years ago, and the Earth today. It shows that there has been a steady climate change.”
“What kind of change?” Usagi asked, peering at the screen.
“I’m afraid that the Earth is heading towards an Ice Age,” said Ami, giving the others a grave look.
“Do you mean we are about to experience the Great Freeze?” asked Rei, leaning forward slightly. “Is that why I feel as if something important is going to happen?”
Ami shook her head slightly. “I don’t think this is the Great Freeze. This only shows that the Earth is heading towards an Ice Age; not that it is about to happen immediately. This Ice Age shouldn’t happen for hundreds of years. Now, as to the important change you feel is heading our way, that may, in fact, be the Great Freeze,” she said, ignoring the sharp intake of breath as she continued. “You must remember that it happened around this time from what ChibiUsa told us,” said Ami, turning her computer back around to type a few more numbers in.
“I wonder how it happens, though,” said Makoto, putting her chin in her hand, as she considered the various possibilities. “It has to be something huge to affect Earth the way is does.”
“Maybe it’s caused by an enemy,” Minako suggested, sipping the last of her shake. “That would make sense, right?”
“I suppose,” said Ami absentmindedly as she continued to type on the computer; which quickly told the others that she wouldn’t be listening to the conversation anymore.
Following Ami’s lead, Usagi turned her head towards the window and tried to think about other things. Like, for instance, the Starlights. Though they had only been gone a few months she missed them so much. They had been great friends to hard, and it was sometimes hard to believe that they were gone. But they were, and Usagi missed them. A lot. Just as she missed Mamoru and ChibiChibi.
Ah, ChibiChibi. Such a strong little warrior. For one so young, she had radiated peace and happiness, making Usagi feel like there was nothing to worry about whenever she was near.
Usagi sighed, memories flying through her mind of the little two year old. She missed having her around. ChibiChibi had been like another daughter to her, and, sometimes, Usagi wondered if she was ever going to come back.
It would be nice. Maybe fate would be kind and she would come back for a visit.
Maybe.
