Asami walked up the steps to the gravesite of his father. It was 50th day, and the festival of Dead had begun. In his hand was a silk bag with three sticks of incense and a single candle. Head bowed he turned right on the landing and made his way through the headstones of deceased ancestors to the one marked Asami Aoe. Bowing he went to his knees and began to unpack the bag, setting up the incense and candle. Words escaped his lips as he began the prayer. Pulling out his lighter he lit the incense and ended prayers.

Camera focused, Takaba shifted on his stomach as he focused the lens of his viewfinder. It blurred then came into perfect focus, aimed right on the bowing figure of Asami praying over a grave. Takaba frowned as he zoomed in to the lips that whispered a prayer. It didn’t fit into the idea of Asami, the monster who raped him. But here he was going over the rituals of the festival. From his perch he could almost see the whole Asami shrine, the people on the first level looking like ants. He snapped a few pictures of Asami and smiled.

Asami stayed down, only picking up his cell phone after the fifth ring.
“Hello?”
“We found him on the roof of the shrine. He is to your left.” Asami smirked at the words and leaned forward, looking like the grieving son.
“Bring him here.” Once said he hung up and waited a few minutes before standing. His day had just gotten better.
Takaba had a few seconds before he noticed the men behind him. Turning he jumped up and sprinted, across bamboo shoots. Three feet from the side of the roof, his foot slipped and with a scream Takaba fell.
****
Beeps went off each minute as the machine measure blood pressure and pulse beat. Takaba lay on white sheets, his body hooked up to an IV machine as the breathing mask pumped oxygen into the pale body. Asami didn’t think he would ever forget the piercing sound of Takaba scream as he fell, or the sight of his body bent at the wrong angle. The Yakama could kick himself for almost killing the boy. Hand folded, he leaned over the bed and grasped the limp pale hand. Lowering his head Asami began his prayer all over again for Takaba’s life.
****
It came in and out, the sounds of voices and beeps. He struggled to the surface, fighting for that illusive realization he was asleep. It seemed like hours, weeks, years before he opened his eyes and when he did, everything HURT. Blinking, Takaba groaned as his body rushed to show everything that was wrong. A dim light was to the left and his arm was held down. Taking his time he assessed each feeling and finally found the strength to look over at his arm. Dark hair covered most of it and now that he thought about it the hair was soft and feathery. The nose pressed to his palm was solid and after blinking several times Takaba realized Asami was asleep on him.
It earned a squeak companioned by wide eyes and an open mouth.
Asami sniffled and buried deeper into the warm flesh he was on. Everything was quiet and calm except for a gasp. Choosing to ignore it, he settled down for more sleep
Now trying to wiggle out his arm, Takaba kept his eye on the monster near him. Why was Asami asleep in a chair and on his arm? Eyes closed he tried to remember.

It was the voice of the high pitch of a woman that made him wake and Asami wasn’t pleased. Eyes opened and he lifted sore neck and shoulder muscles. On the other side was the nurse and doctor examining Takaba chart. Sitting up was the patient himself looking confused.
“It’s amazing he woke so soon!”
“I know doctor. It was estimated he would stay in the coma for a few more days!”
In the mist of all of this his pet was gasping and trying to speak.
“Stop!” Asami said, keeping his voice low and steel in the tone. Looking at Takaba he leaned in.
“You fell off my family’s shrine. You have been in the hospital for 27 hours. Try to stay calm.” It was said softly and with warmth and if Takaba wasn’t convinced his head was falling off he would have been worried.
Doctor and nurse went about their activities making Takaba follow a flash light, fingers and count back from 10. He was asked what his name was and where he lived. And finally who Asami was. At that he just stared.
The doctor, taking pity on the boy smiled and said, “You lover was so worried. You are lucky he was there to give you CPR.”
Takaba just looked before letting out a string of curses.
****
After assuring the doctor Takaba didn’t mean any of the curses he was left alone with his pet.
“You are lucky to be alive.” Asami started, “If you do that ever again I will kill…you!”
“If I did it again I would be dead!” Takaba shot back, grumbling about being lectured when he was injured. Asami began to pace reaching in for a cigarette.
“I…” He stopped and just looked at Takaba. The blonde returned the look; if he hadn’t been so pissed he would have missed the tension around the man’s eyes or the pull of the mouth.
Asami had been worried and scared. That made Takaba pause.
“I’m sorry.” He finally said. Asami nodded his head and after dropping the cigarette went to the bed, sat, and delicately pulled Takaba in his lap. Hugging the blonde to his chest Asami allowed his pet to settle before tightening the arms and linking his fingers. Pressed to Asami, Takaba relaxed his head allowing it to falling back, tucked under the Yakuza’s chin.
Asami didn’t let go for a long time.
