Author: I’m taking a HUGE liberty here. I am twisting the anime to fit the book. *gasp* So, I’m greatly diverging. I am ashamed the Count dies, for he doesn’t in the book Albert and Mercedes leave Paris high society and he leaves his father’s surname behind and taking his mother’s maiden name. Well, in the book. Here I’m being a little more...err...slashy. But, yes. Anime be damned. I’m blurring the line between book and anime horrendously. Hopefully it’ll be understandable even though. By the way...these characters in no way whatsoever belong to me. As said in another fic, if they were, I would make them my pleasure slaves and never let them out of my sight. Anyway...
Albert couldn’t stop thinking about it, the trip he took with the Count into space.
‘It seems so long ago, now,’ he thought, and a sad smile played on his lips. He was in the army now, escaping from his father’s name and using the name that he loved the most as his own surname. He wasn’t meant for the army, even he knew that and was surprised he had actually survived for this long.
‘How many years has it been?’ he asked himself as he stared up at the bunk over him.
‘Too long, I suppose.’
He felt the ship exit hyperspace and wondered idly where they were now. He now reveled in his ignorance and tried his hardest to keep it that way. There would be no expectations then, no worries. Just waiting and hoping. But for what? He felt the ship land and rolled out of the bunk before anyone else. They were still sleeping, maybe dreaming of better things. He wound his way to the main compartments and smiled at the other soldiers who were awake.
“Where are we?” He asked in his usual manner. Cheerfully dumb.
One of his comrades grinned at him. “The army decided to give us a break for once. We’re on Luna in time for the Carnival.”
Albert’s breath caught in his throat and he felt all the blood leave his face, and had to lean heavily on the wall until the memories passed. He only faintly heard the voiced concerns of his mates. He managed to gain his composure after a moment and he smiled weakly at them.
“Don’t worry, I’m just not feeling well.”
“You were fine a moment before.”
Albert grew awkward.
“Why did you react that way?”
“I’ve...been on Luna once before. There are some...no, many, memories here.”
“Y’hear that boys? Our little Albert isn’t as innocent as we thought!”
The men grinned at Albert and chuckled as he fell into his usual role, now that the question of his past had been left behind.
The door to the ship opened and he left with the group of people he had come to consider friends over long years of voyages and battles. They meandered down the streets, the others relaxing in the decadent revelry while Albert felt an increasing uneasiness the deeper he went into the city. He reached into his pocket and took out the watch the Count had given him, so long ago. He swallowed hard when he found the watch had started to tick again. It had stopped when the Count...
He found a nice, secluded spot and sat down, holding the watch to his chest and doing his best to hold back tears.
Over the years his friends had tried to pry out of him if he had ever loved anyone. He had answered sadly, “Yes...once, a long time ago,” and had smiled wryly, the memories provoked bitter as they had exclaimed over that little tidbit of information. He had then found himself asking the same question he had been posed:
“Why do you want to know? Why ask me this now?”
He had never been given a satisfactory answer. He had come to believe that they had asked to try and tease him more, but after he answered ‘yes’ they were at a loss of what to do. He coughed twice, hiding the sobs and slowly stood. This wasn’t the time or the place to brood over the past. As he stood and someone running bumped into him and felt the watch slip out of his hand and into the pickpocket’s. He was immediately on their tail and caught them, and tore the watch out of their hands, his eyes dilated. The watch was the only thing precious left to him in the world. When the thief looked up they both stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity.
“Beppo?”
