Of Manipulation
and Painted Toe Nails
Dusk
was Kaidoh’s favorite time of day. The way the sky
looked – streaked saffron and purple and pink – was enough to awe him if he
were in a particular frame of mind. He’d recently finished up tennis practice
and, despite the workout he’d driven himself to very early that morning, he’d
been the last to leave the courts.
Shouldering his bag, he broke into a slow, loping jog and began to clear his
mind of all distractions. His afternoon run was cathartic, it put him in that
state of mind that allowed him to believe that he was invincible – he could
achieve anything.
And it was with that feeling of complete self-control and confidence that he
noticed a familiar, lone figure sitting on one of the benches just outside of
the school grounds. Hesitant and undecided, Kaidoh had all but decided not to
disrupt his concentration by stopping to speak, but as it was very unusual for
Kikumaru Eiji to be sitting someplace alone and still, Kaidoh couldn’t very
well just jog past him without enquiring after his welfare. Slowing as he
approached, he was silent for a moment, until Kikumaru lifted his head and
smiled wanly.
“Hello, Kaidoh.”
Kaidoh frowned minutely. “Is everything all right, Eiji-senpai?”
Kikumaru shrugged. Kaidoh was obviously very uncomfortable enquiring after him
in so personal a manner. In fact, unless it had to do with tennis, Kaidoh
didn’t seem apt to make any sort of small talk about anything personal.
Kikumaru knew this and accepted it as simply part of his kouhai’s
character.
“Nya, Kaidoh, I’m okay.” He responded, almost
sullenly.
Kaidoh blinked a few times, unsure as to what he should say now. Kikumaru was
clearly not okay and it would be rude and thoughtless for Kaidoh to leave him
unattended and in such low spirits. Truthfully, he rather liked Kikumaru,
though he would never have said so.
“You…seem as though something is wrong.” Kaidoh enunciated carefully. Kikumaru
had to suppress a giggle – his teammate sounded as if he were reading from a
script.
Kikumaru sighed heavily. “Well…I suppose…nya, it’s
very embarrassing, Kaidoh-kun.”
Kaidoh tensed further, if that were even physically possible. His flight reflex
was in full swing and he was poised to bolt if Kikumaru so much as hinted at
something improper. Kaidoh shifted, scuffing his shoe along the concrete and
hissing faintly. Kikumaru bit his lip to stifle the urge to grin. Kaidoh knew
it was his turn to speak – he sniffed and rubbed his bangs absently. “I…I could
listen. If you need to discuss it, Eiji-senpai.”
Kikumaru turned the full impact of those big, sad eyes on Kaidoh and scooted
closer to the edge of the bench. “Thank you, Kaidoh-kun. Maybe you can help
me.”
Kaidoh did not respond, though he remained standing where he was. Kikumaru took
this as encouragement. “I lost a bet, you see.” There was a meaningful pause. “To Fuji-kun.”
Kaidoh’s eyes widened. Losing a bet to Fuji Syuusuke could be a very dangerous thing. “I am very sorry,
Eiji-senpai. What do you need help with?”
Kikumaru beamed his irresistible smile at Kaidoh and bent to rummage through
his bag. When he sat up again, a bottle of bright red nail polish balanced in
the center of his palm. “I need help painting my toenails.”
Kaidoh’s eyes widened and he made a soft, choking
sound. “I…you…Eiji-senpai…”
Oh, how he wanted to refuse. To be honest, he wanted to be able to turn and run
without having to say anything at all. This went beyond embarrassment – Kaidoh
wondered how his senpai had even managed to pose such
a suggestion to him. Even more amazing was that he had done it without even a
hint of true embarrassment. Kaidoh reasoned that it was fitting, however, since
he was embarrassed enough for the both of them. His cheeks flushed a dusky pink
and he stared at his shoes. As his gaze wandered a bit, he realized that Eiji-senpai was, in fact, already barefoot. He had pale, slender
feet – like a female. Kaidoh’s stomach knotted.
Kikumaru blinked up at Kaidoh. “Please, Kaidoh-kun. My right wrist is strained
a bit and I can’t manage such a meticulous task with my left. If I have to
forfeit, I can’t imagine what Fuji will come up with
next.”
Kaidoh couldn’t either – which was a bit frightening. He sighed, dropping his
bag and going down on one knee before Kikumaru. If Eiji-senpai
had requested that Kaidoh carry him home on his back, he would have done so. It
didn’t mean that he would relish such an act, but he would do it nonetheless. A
request from his senpai was not something Kaidoh
Kaoru would refuse. If only it had been that half-witted jackal Momoshiro that had lost the bet. Kaidoh would have gladly
left him to Fuji-senpai’s wicked machinations. Quite pleasantly so, in fact.
“Fssshhh.” He hissed, taking
the bottle from Kikumaru as he resigned himself to the task at hand. He’d
partaken of Inui-senpai’s special vegetable juice
before – painting Eiji-senpai’s dainty little
toenails would be a cakewalk, no matter how undignified it was.
He lifted Kikumaru’s left foot as though it were made
of glass and began to, quickly and surprisingly deftly, paint his toenails.
Kikumaru was silent while his kouhai worked, though
he couldn’t quite keep the smile off his face. Kaidoh was touching him like he
might break if he wasn’t careful. It was quite endearing. Mamushi
was quite the gentleman, it seemed.
Kaidoh couldn’t help noticing the contrast between his sun darkened skin and Kikumaru’s paler skin. It embarrassed him that he would
notice such a contrast and even more so that he seemed to be moved by it. He
would have been horrified to learn that his senpai
was, all the while, admiring the lines of his arms, his shoulders, his strong,
capable fingers.
After what seemed an agonizingly long period of time, Kaidoh’s
task was complete and Kikumaru’s toenails had been
skillfully painted. Kaidoh lowered his senpai’s foot
to the ground again and twisted the bottle cap on again. He wrinkled his nose a
bit – he could not fathom why women trifled with nail polish at all. It smelled
horrible. Kikumaru could be forgiven as he’d lost a bet. And a man never hedged
on a bet – it was dishonorable.
Handing the bottle back to Kikumaru, a faint blush still coloring his cheeks,
Kaidoh grabbed his bag and stood stiffly. He felt as though he had shared an
inexcusably intimate moment with his senpai and was
ready to make good his escape.
“If you don’t need anything else, Eiji-senpai?”
Kikumaru flashed that brilliant smile and tilted his head. “No, Kaidoh-kun.
Thank you very much for your help.” He ducked his head, smiling a little to
himself, and when he looked up again, Kaidoh was already jogging away from him
– faster than when he’d come upon him.
Kikumaru giggled and swung his feet, wiggling his toes a little to admire Kaidoh’s handiwork.
Behind him, that voice, smooth like the most well disguised evil, broke into
his amusement.
“I must admit – I am surprised, Eiji-kun. You lie most convincingly. I will
remember not to underestimate you in the future.”
Kikumaru turned to face Inui, smile still fixed firmly in place. “Nya, and
you thought I couldn’t do it.”
Inui was scribbling furiously in his notebook, stopping once to push his
glasses up. “Hn. There was
an 82.78 percent chance he would refuse. I suppose what we learned here is…”
Kikumaru hopped to his feet and made Inui a sweeping bow. “Is that nobody, not
even the fearsome Mamushi can resist Kikumaru Eiji’s lure.”
The redhead laughed, not missing the slight frown that creased Inui’s brow. “Saa, Inui-kun, just ask him for a date. What would Kaidoh
say if he somehow found about your extensive ‘Kaidoh Kaoru’ data collecting
hobby?”
Inui smiled, the very picture of smug self-assurance.
“He would think nothing of it. It’s what I do, Eiji-kun.”
Kikumaru arched one delicate, red eyebrow and planted his hands on his hips.
“But would he think something of the fact that you have 77 books devoted solely
to him?”
Inui’s smile faded and he wrinkled his nose, adjusting his glasses again. “Hn. Eiji-kun?”
Kikumaru smiled sweetly, hands linking behind his back as he rocked on his bare
heels. “Yesssss, Inui-kun?”
“Would Oishi be bothered by the knowledge that Kaidoh spent fifteen
minutes and 29 seconds caressing your feet?”
Kikumaru squeaked and folded his arms across his chest. “Nya, Inui-kun. No fair.”
Inui smirked, glasses glinting with the last rays of the sun as he allowed
himself to dwell, just for a moment, on the memory of Kaidoh Kaoru’s adorable
blush. “No.” He murmured. “But I don’t have to be fair…do
I?”
