The driver of the small, dark blue car that blended well with the shadowed street lamps and dull fade of neon lights was returning from a hard day at work, to tired to care about anything other than getting to bed. The truck ahead of him turned off a while back, leaving him alone on the deserted main street. He was, oblivious to the change in lights until that last fatal moment when his headlights fell upon a boy walking across the street, too late to turn the boy froze, able to do nothing except stare with a look of horror written across his face. Unified screeches definded the later crunch of metal and as the lights changed back to green, the distant wail of sirens were heard.
---
When Yoh woke, everything was exactly as he had left it, the windows spread open to let the warming sun in, the sliding door separating his room from the hall slighlty ajar. Yoh\'s eyes drifted over the floorboards, then to the end of his futon blankets twisted securly around his legs. Blinking the sleep away, he pushed the blankets away and greeting a cold chill that made him shiver. Immediatly, he sought the comfort of his guardian ghost, reliable and always there for him.
\"Amidamaru?\"
His voice echoed in the hollow distance between him and the door. The coldness that sought him out made him wish that he was still under the blankets, warm and protected against the world.
\"Yoh-dono?\"
Yoh\'s heart leapt to his throat, the door suddenly sliding back to reveal the shadowed image of the man he grew to love, intense blue eyes quickened with worry. It never occured to Yoh until now, that Amidamaru was solid, the defined white cloak that covered his shoulders swaying and breathing as he breathed.
\"Yoh-donno, you\'re shivering.\"
Strong, comforting arms pulled Yoh against the pulsing warmth of a body, envelloping him in a lusted awe that overcame him, along with the soothing scent of spice and medow flowers.
\"I.. I\'m fine.. really..\" Yoh managed, gulping down burning air into his lungs.
\"No you\'re not.\" Came the reply, full, callosed fingers gently guiding Yoh\'s chin upwards so that his eyes met the intense blue. \"You\'re pale, I warned you about getting out of the hotspring to fast, this is what you get for not listening to me.\"
\"Wha?\" Yoh stammered, the words escaping his lips before he could stop them. \"I was never in a..\"
His mind registered that this was a dream, it had to be. Amidamaru was never solid, not as solid that he could touch Yoh\'s skin in a way that made it tingle, the smell of spices that drifted through the room did not suit the samurai to his being.
\"Don\'t you remember?\" Amidamaru suddenly spoke with a soft chuckle afterwards, leaning back slightly to gaze at the shaman. \"You had to much sake.\"
Yoh pulled away, stepping back several paces then turned around, bolting to the window. The streets below were dirt, hardpacked from the abuse of feet and wheels. Women in kimonos giggled under a rainbow array of umbrellas, samurai patrolling in tight knit groups.
\"Yoh?\"
Yoh spun around to face his guardian, hands clutching the window sill so hard his knuckles were white.
\"What year is it.\"
Amidamaru stared at him for a long time before answering.
\"Fourteen sixty one.\"
\'No.\' Yoh gasped, sliding to his knees and burrying his face in his hands. \'No! It can\'t be! Everyone I know. .they\'re all gone!\"
His fists met the floor in a series of sickening thuds, sobs wracking his body.
\'No..\'
The arms were around him again, soothing comfort against a will torn by the truth. For a while, all Yoh did was sob quietly into the shoulder of his samurai until he felt lips pressed against his forehead.
\'I don\'t understand..\' Yoh whispered. \'This feels so real..\'
He closed his eyes, wanting to hide against the cruel world that evleloped around him. Tears burned his eyes, thinking about his friends and family.
\'Yoh..\'
Yoh looked up, suddenly in a searing heart pounding kiss that made him shudder. His lips parted, allowing access to the moist cavern within. His body gave in, pressed hotly against the molded body of the man before him. When they finally parted, breathless, gentle fingers wiped away tears.
\'Wake up.\'
\'What?\'
\'You have to wake up. Please.\'
Yoh, lost in the intense blue eyes was on the verge of tears.
\'I can\'t.. I\'m afraid..\'
He felt his face being tilted, lips sealed against his.
\'Trust me..\'
Yoh\'s eyes fluttered, warmth spreading over him. Slowly, the fading image of the room turned black, a soft sigh escaping with two words before he gave in.
\'I do.\'
---
The rythmic rise and fall of his chest followed in sync with the monitering beep of a life support machine. The hospital room was abandonded except for three occupants, a girl with vivid blond hair and a red bandanna, a petite boy with pale brown hair and the flittering whisper of a ghost that never left the bedside.
\'Wake up.\'
A soft cough came from the bed, black lashes fluttering. The three occupants turned their attention to it, shocked and surprised.
\'Wake up Yoh.. Wake up. Open your eyes.\'
Another cough, louder this time. The lashes parted, showing dark brown underneath.
\"Get the nurse!\"
\'Ung..\'
It was havoc after the seconds of silence, Nurses racing to remove the tube from his throat, now able to breath on his own. Then, they stood aside and waited. The blond haired girl was at his side clutching his hand.
\'Yoh..\'
His eyes registered, head turning to meet her.
\'A-Anna?\'
\"He\'s alive!\"
\"Oh Yoh!\" She sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck and sobbing into his shoulder. He heaved a sigh from his lungs, still groggy he swept his eyes over the room.
\'what happened?\'
Anna stood back, still holding his hand.
\'You.. were hit by a car crossing the street. They pronounced you dead coming into the hospital but.. we never gave up hope, especially not Amidamaru.\"
Yoh chuckled weakly.
\'Damn its hard to kill of an Asakura. Where is Amidamaru?\'
The petite boy looked around.
\"He was just here I\'ll find him.\"
Yoh relaxed against the pillows behind his wrapped forehead, and closing his eyes, smiled.
//Thank you, without you I never would have come back. You are a true friend.//
Beyond the window of fading stars, the shadow of a man smiled, a single silver blue eye flickering over the window before he turned, disappearing into the rising sun blanketed by fog. At the doorstep of the hospital, Amidamaru watched, until the double doors opened and a sandy haired head popped out.
\"Amidamaru come on, Yoh\'s awake we\'re celebrating!\"
The samurai shivered and turning to the boy, followed him inside. The wind picked up, a distant familliar laugh fading under the cheerful tune of morning birds, new life re-given. There was still hope.
