Author’s notes: This is a completely AU fic, it’s going to be written slowly because I don’t have
much time to write but I intent to finish it eventually. I’m using the Japanese names for this, but for
some characters I’ll use a little the American ones too.
Warning: This is going to be dark, it would have
yaoi in the future and some nasty and heavy stuff, be warned about it. Also, this story doesn’t have a beta, so it
may have grammar mistakes, I hope they aren’t so bad.
Disclaimer: The Ronin Warriors don't belong to me,

Darker lives
Prologue
It was close to midnight and the Dynasty Palace was in
shadows, the guards were doing their duties in silence, unaware of what was
happening at the building’s vowels.
In one of the inner gardens, which resembled vaguely a forest
with its big trees, a little group of four shadows were gathered in a clearing
at the middle of the garden, surrounding a big, plane, square stone full of
runes, it was about the size of a service table and high enough to reach the
waist of a full grown man: an altar for some unknown purpose. On it were
several pieces of moon quartzes, a bat with its wings and mouth tied up, two
pots of incense and an obsidian knife.
The full moon illuminated with a tenuous white light the clearing and
its hooded visitors, one of them took a few steps forward, reaching the altar
and uncovered her head, arranging the cloak so it hanged from the shoulders,
revealing a female slender body, clothed in an elegant black dress without
sleeves, a bright red jewel adorned her breast. She had white skin, delicate
features, red lips, emerald eyes and blond, curly hair, that cascaded along her
back to her waist, over her head she wore a golden tiara with red and white
jewels, the symbol of her power. She was the Empress, the sole and powerful
dictator of The Scarlet Empire, which had been ruled by the Scarlet Dynasty for
many generations.
She had been her parent’s only child, and so the only one
to fight the Dynasty succession. She was crowned upon her parent’s deaths when
she was seventeen. Many had tried to
depose her, many to marry her and some others to kill her. All of them found out that she was not so
easy to defeat, she had great power in her and no scruples to use it against
anyone stupid enough to try and take away what was hers. She was a mighty warrior and a powerful
sorceress and had ruled the Dynasty for many years now with steel and fear,
always maintaining her youth with her powerful magic.
She had now a vast kingdom, the larger of the planet,
consisting of half the Third Continent and pretending to expand even more. She
soon would be the only ruler of the entire continent and will search and
conquer the other two. But first she had to squash the imprudent rebellion that
was infesting her main cities; rebels that wished a merciful and just emperor.
The fools! There was no mercy in the world, no such thing as justice! They
wanted to take her month old child, a girl she had have from one of her chief
warriors now dead, and to raise her into their stupid beliefs of justice and
fraternity! Ha! As if she would let any of them put a finger in her child! She
would raise her to be a warrior and to lead the oncoming wars against the other
continents. The world will belong to her and her family for eons to come!
She could so easily crush every single one of the rebels,
torture and kill them slowly, make them scream and beg for death. But if she
did that she would only make martyrs, heroes to be followed by other idiots
that dreamed of perfect never-would-be worlds. No, she had other much better
plan. The leader of the rebellion, Ashel, was a powerful warrior, trained in
the temple of Xion, the Dragon God of the skies, and owned one of the most powerful
armours in her kingdom, the Kikoutei. He
was young but strong and charming, and his followers had their best hopes in
him.
Well, she was going to crush those hopes! There would be no
martyrs, no heroes to remember and follow. There would be only disappointment
and realization that no one would ever put her aside! Ashel would be hers! He
would leave his worthless cause and the filthy crowd that believed in him for
her! To be her husband and fight for her kingdom until she disposed of
him! With their leader at her side, the
rebels will soon disappear from existence.
And that was what she’ll do tonight, he had wizards and
powerful monks at his side, protecting him from dark magic, but not even his
mentor, the high priest of the Dragon, would be able to stop the sorcery she
was about to accomplish, she will make a pact with the most powerful of
deities, she will call upon Death.
The Empress stood before the altar and raised her hands to
the full moon, starting a soft chant, her three companions, all of them
powerful sorcerers, made a triangle surrounding her and extended their arms, a
brilliant light surrounded their mistress, she took the bat and decapitated it
with her hands, cutting its body by the middle with the knife and doing a
complex symbol with its blood without stopping her chant. When the symbol was finished, she threw away
the remnants of the animal and raised her arms again, the quartzes started to
glow and levitate, arranging themselves in the shape of the symbol, they
started to rotate and their light intensified. The pots of incense ignited and
the smell of jasmine filled the air, the stones floated about 2 meters in the
air and a ray of the moon converged in them, the brightness reached a crescendo
and then suddenly all light was gone and darkness fell over the group,
isolating them even from the moonlight.
In that complete darkness a silhouette could barely be seen
in front of the Empress, at the other side of the altar stood a tall figure of
a beautiful woman. Her hair was pitch black, straight and long all the way to
the ground, part of it was covering the right middle of her face, what was
visible of her skin was the colour of the moon, her features were elegant and
well formed, the only visible eye was black, the same as her lips, the rest of
the body was completely covered in a black velvet cloak.
She looked at the Empress and smiled, her black lips
opening and a soft, powerful voice, like the rumour of the wind, was heard.
“You’ll have him, his
love and life will be yours and you’ll marry him. But your first born from him,
will be mine...”
Then she was gone and the darkness receded, the quartzes
fell to the stone and all the symbols disappeared. The Empress smiled, satisfied with the
results, her three companions approached and started to put away the trinkets,
one of them talked to their mistress.
“My lady, don’t you think this was a bit dangerous? It is
said that Death is the most treacherous of the deities”
“I know the dangers of its power Shuten, but rest assured
that I’m ready to meet anything that comes my way”
She covered herself with the cloak again and the little
group abandoned the garden.
Almost a year later...
Arago was panting and groaning loudly with each thrust he
gave into the willing body under him, his partner was a middle-aged woman with
long brown hair, firm and well done body and brownish eyes, he started to
thrust into her deeper and faster and she gave a loud moan in pleasure, she
liked it hard and they often had long sessions of rough sex, they had been
lovers for years now, and beyond that, they were allies. She came with a loud cry and tightened her
inner muscles in her release, Arago came himself, filling her body with his
cum.
They separated and rested in the enormous bed of Arago’s
chamber. The woman was the best of the sorcerers that were at the Empress’ service,
her name was Nasuti. She was ambitious and power starved like he liked them,
women like that were easier to manipulate. Nasuti was also smart and machiavellic like no other, some said that she could
surpass even the Empress’ powers if she wanted.
Arago wasn’t so sure she could do it, not on her own at least, but
together he was confident that they could overpower the Empress and get what he
wanted. Yes, with Nasuti at his side, the empire would soon be his, especially
now that the Empress was slightly weaker due to the birth of her new son just
an hour ago.
The child, the new heir to the Dynasty crown, it had been a
boy so he would have preference over his older sister. Arago’s original plan
had been to kill him along with his mother, the father wasn’t really a problem
anymore, he had been wandering the halls of the palace in a state of semi-shock
since the wedding night, a mere shadow which will be easy to dispose of, then
Arago as the chief mage-warrior of the Empress will claim possession of the crown
as the Empress’ daughter guardian and he’ll marry her when she’ll be fourteen.
It would also be necessary to kill the prime counsellor; Shuten had always been
faithful to the Empress.
Nasuti hadn’t agreed entirely to his plan, she suggested a
better end to the Empress. As for the child, they couldn’t kill him, he was an
offer to Death and Death must always have its offers dedicated the right way or
the consequences would be disastrous. Arago failed to see what better way of
give Death an offer than to kill it, but the ancient lore dictated that said
offer should be placed in the corresponding altar, so Death itself could
collect it and dispose of its doom, which was not always death.
So, what they’ll do as soon as they were summoned, was
collect the newborn and make someone take him to the garden altar, he’ll be out
of the way while they started the attack on the Empress and her most faithful
servants. Arago was sure they’ll be victorious, finally he would be able to
claim the crown, and if the child was still alive he’ll be sure to have him
under his power, as same as his sister.
Nasuti was straightening in the bed, ready to collect her
clothes, when they heard the distant sound of a gong.
“It’s time” she said. Arago laughed and got out of the bed.
“Yes. Finally! The crown of the Dynasty would be mine! And
with it soon I would rule the world!”
Nasuti smiled evilly at his back, treacherous thoughts
forming in her mind.
‘Of course you’ll
rule Arago. With me at your side. And when I’d no longer
need you, I’ll rule the empire alone.’
They got dressed quickly and left to fulfil their treason.
A shadow moved slowly through the trees surrounding the
outer wall, at the east side of the Palace’s grounds, the slight movement went
unnoticed by the guard, who apparently was more interested in the events that
were taking place somewhere inside the grounds.
It must have been something big, because a second later the
guard was deserting his post in favour of running to the main building of the
palace. With wind speed, the shadow jumped the wall and penetrated the grounds;
it took cover between a niche and a statue in one of the outer corridors and
waited. Soon, a bunch of guards passed by his hiding place,
hurrying to the main building. Once the corridor was deserted the shadow
detached itself from its cover and stepped into the light. It was a man, a
priest more exactly, with a holy staff in one hand, brown skin and white hair,
his eyes obscured by a circular hat.
He looked in the main building’s direction and could sense
the conflict that was taking place in it, the amount of magic that was being
wasted told him that the Empress had have a disagreement with her first
lieutenant and probably with the sorceress too. It was to be expected, all those
power starved people, like hyenas trying to bite each other’s throats. His
contact had been right, this was a great opportunity.
He sighed in disappointment. A great opportunity indeed,
utterly lost for the remaining rebels, if only Ashel were still with them, but
he had lost the young warrior to the enemy and now nothing could be done about
that, but he could retrieve the Kikoutei and maybe some of the holy armours that
the Dynasty had stolen long ago, and perhaps he could still save the children.
With renewed resolution he hurried along the corridor, looking for the sacred
place where the armours should be.
Inside the palace, the royal guards were fighting against
the empire’s soldiers that were under Arago’s lead; only a few guards loyal to
the Empress were still standing, trying futility to prevent the traitors from
getting inside the royal chambers. It was already too late, Arago was inside
the waiting room fighting with Shuten, the loyal prime counsellor was all that
remained between him and the weak Empress, who must be doing at that very
moment the last chant of the offering ritual, her newborn child was already in
the altar, all she had to do was call the spirit of Death to come collect him,
she would use a great deal of energy in this and for some precious moments
after the ritual would be finished she would be helpless, that was the right
time to strike and Arago had to kill Shuten fast in order to be in front of the
Empress in time to finish her. But Shuten wasn’t so easy to kill, he was the Oni
Masho, he had a powerful armour and was fighting out
of loyalty to his Empress, Arago was being pressed to win.
Suddenly they felt something; a powerful blast of energy
that seemed to come from the back garden, Shuten renewed his efforts, the
blades making loud metallic sounds each time they met.
“You can’t win Arago!” yelled Shuten “I won’t let you come
near the Empress!”
Arago showed an evil smile while he stopped a blow.
“I tend to disagree with you Shuten. You see, I think you’d
be dead any second now.”
Shuten raised an eyebrow and was about to retort with
another blow when a blast of energy hit him from behind, sending him directly
into Arago’s waiting sword, the look of surprise frozen in his face. Arago
finished the job quickly and sent Nasuti an amused look.
“Good shot.”
“Hurry up. The ritual has already ended.”
Both of them entered the main chamber, where the Empress
was standing in front of a little altar, having already finished her chant. The
tall woman turned immediately to face the two intruders.
“Arago. Nasuti.” The Empress regarded them coldly, a disgusted smile
formed in her lips. “Why I’m not surprised?”
The sorceress smiled evilly in triumph, while Arago
collected his own power, ready to strike.
“It’s a shame my Empress.” Said the
warrior, with a hand in front of him. “I think you are not necessary any
more.”
The blast of power hit the blond woman squarely in the
chest and it sent her crashing in to a wall, Arago looked at the still form and
gave a triumphant laugh.
In the garden where the altar to Death stood, a twelve year
old boy was hiding, protected by a tree’s shadow. His name was Anubis, though
little lady Kyra liked to call him Cale, and he was still a warrior apprentice,
soon to make a final test to claim one of the mystical armours that protected
the empire. He was Shuten’s apprentice too and very close to the Empress, under
her tutelage he was to be trained to be a spy and a dark sorcerer and she had
insisted that only she and her most loyal servant knew of Anubis’ real
training. That ignorance of his real ties to the Empress and Shuten was what
saved his life that day.
At the time he was looking impatiently at the little bundle
placed in the altar, he had seen one of the soldiers put it there on the
Empress orders and then left without seeing behind. Anubis had been told to
follow him and make sure that the newborn was in the right place, and to stop
the soldier if he tried to kill his charge. The boy couldn’t see why someone
would want to kill the crown heir, it would be a pretty stupid thing to do,
both because of who his mother was and the fact that the little baby was to be
offered to Death, but he obeyed and so he was here, waiting for something to
happen, though he wasn’t sure what.
Suddenly the wind stopped and everything went very still,
not a noise could be heard, not even those of the battle inside the palace.
Anubis held his breath while he saw the sky darkening and could feel raw energy
crossing the garden and gathering around the altar, which was in a moment
engulfed by absolute darkness and the boy couldn’t see what was going on. It
lasted only a few seconds, though they were the longest seconds Anubis had
experienced in his short life, and then the darkness was gone, the wind moved
again and everything seemed back to normal. The noise of the battle was getting
louder and the boy could tell that someone was using a respectable amount of
magic.
He looked at the altar, the tiny bundle was still there and
a powerful aura surrounded it, as if it was trying to get inside the still
living child, it was a few seconds later that it seemed to succeed and Anubis
debated whether he should go and retrieve the baby or wait until a soldier came
back for it, suddenly he felt a wave of energy in his mind, making something
inside him explode and he gasped, taking his hands to his head, the energy left
but something was missing, it took him about two seconds to realize that
Shuten’s mind presence was gone, that meant…
Anubis looked to the palace’s main building, the Empress
was in danger, he could feel it. He started to move to
the inside when someone got out from the building and ran to the altar; Anubis
stopped and looked at the intruder, recognizing the baby’s father. The man took
the newborn in his arms and to the boy’s utter surprise he ran to one of the
corridors that would lead him to the outside grounds. The youngster was at a
loss of what to do, torn between stopping the man and go to his Empress aid. He
felt another big gathering of magic inside the palace and fear ran into him, he
turned to go to the royal chambers when a female voice in his head stopped him.
‘No Anubis! Don’t
come!’
‘But, your majesty…’
‘My husband took the
child on my command. Make sure he makes it out of the grounds!’
‘Your majesty… are you sure?’
‘I don’t need you
here! Go and see my son doesn’t stay in the Palace!’
Anubis obeyed and took a run the way he had seen Ashel go, he
found him quickly, some of the guards were still guarding the doors, two of
them were trying to stop the warrior’s escape and were fighting him with their
swords. Anubis watched from behind a column, the man was good, he still held
his ground even with a newborn tucked in his left arm, he
finished both guards and continued running.
Ashel made it to the main gates and Anubis loosened the
mechanism that kept them closed while two more guards fought the man, the boy
had to use some of his powers to finish one guard and Ashel took the other
down, turning immediately to the gates not even stopping to wonder what had
become of the second guard or why the gates were open for him. Three soldiers
followed the warrior in his fly, but Anubis thought the man could manage them,
anyway his orders had been only to make sure that Ashel made it out from the
grounds and he had done it, so the boy returned to the palace, the Empress
presence was still in his mind, though faint, but Anubis was sure that she was
still alive, her low voice told him to find princess Kyra and stay with her,
the boy hurried to comply.
Another figure watched the Kikoutei warrior leaving with his son,
protected by the shadow of the outer wall the priest looked at the front gate
and felt the battle at the main building ending.
‘So Ashel, you managed to free yourself from her grip. That’s good.’
He hadn’t been able to find
the girl, but at least the boy was out of the palace, it only worried him the
incredible amount of dark power that he felt moments before watching Ashel
getting out from the inner gardens with his little burden, something had
happened and he suspected that something involved the newborn, he had to find
out exactly what was it. He was sure that Ashel would take the child to Xion’s temple, so he jumped the wall and ran into the
forest, taking the shortest route to his domain.
Hours later, Arago was
proudly proclaiming himself Emperor and in charge of the princess. Ashel had
been blamed for the murder of the Empress and was being looked for to retrieve
the crown heir, though everyone in the kingdom supposed the child was as good
as dead, if he hadn’t been killed yet he soon would be, only Arago, Nasuti and
Anubis knew that it was highly improbable that anyone could kill the baby now,
if he hadn’t been taken by Death it meant that he had now its power, the
newborn would grow to be a powerful man; but Arago had other plans for the
child; he was planning to use him to enhance his own powers, like he had done
with the mother.
He was in the royal
chamber, making plans for his future kingdom, when a soldier asked for
acceptance, it was one of those that had followed Ashel and Arago made him
enter.
“Well, what news do you
bring me?”
“My master, we have found
and killed the traitor, but he didn’t have the baby with him anymore.”
“What?!”
“I’m sorry my Master, we
think that we found him too late and he had already disposed of… the corpse.”
Arago stood in rage and
gave a blow to the soldier, sending him to the opposite wall.
“Then find it! Go and find
that corpse immediately!”
The soldier stood from the
floor with difficulty and got out of the chamber as fast as he could. Arago
paced the room angrily.
“Maybe it’s really dead
already. Maybe all Ashel grabbed was a corpse.”
“No” said Nasuti from the
chair in which she was comfortably seated, “he wasn’t dead when his father took
him out of here, I could feel a great power settling, the child is alive we
just have to find him.”
“And where do you suggest
we start.”
“I suggest Xion’s temple. The father got out from there; surely he
thought it a safe place.”
“And if he’s not there?”
“Don’t worry then. I’ll
look for him. In the meantime, I think it does to our benefit that all the
kingdom believe the heir is dead. Don’t you think so?”
Arago smiled and laughed
evilly. With the heir dead there was no one that could fight him for the crown.
He ordered the search and
destruction of the temple of Xion, but the soldiers didn’t find the
missing baby. Nasuti didn’t complain about it, she abandoned the palace in
search for the child, promising to bring him to Arago, a thing she had no
intention to do. She planned to find the child and keep him; she would find a
way to feed her own powers with his or to make him her loyal servant. The Scarlet
Empire would be only hers.
