"Shoujo Kakumei Utena" is the property of Saitou Chiho and Be-Papas. No money to be gained on my behalf for this story. I do it for fun.

It was supposed to be as easy as placing one foot in front of the other, but it felt more like flying for the first time. Of course the winds were calm, the ground was steady, and winding before her was the smooth paved path that stretched beyond the academy gates. But her stomach was still giddy and long purple tresses did little to hide the hint of nervousness from her smile. Carrying a small suitcase packed with clothes and rose teacups, her initial actions seemed unremarkable. Yet every click of the young woman’s heels seemed to echo throughout campus. Each step towards the gate was a powerful slap in the face of the Chairman. Girls in the shadows gossiped. In the distance, the school bells rang. A stopwatch clicked. With one quick breath, Anthy steadied her nerves and pace. Her mouse and friend, Chu Chu, gave a small squeak of reassurance before both were off, never looking back at ornate curved iron, the clean white buildings, or the stifling illusions that were “Ohtori.”

Weeks later

Many shoes were worn under the diligent soles of Anthy while she went from town to town, searching for the whereabouts of her savior.

“Mind ‘peating the name a’gin lass?” asked a portly baker from Whinverly. He caught wind a while back of a dark-skinned beauty going from hill to hill searching for some guy. He just wanted to make sure that the girl he was cutting a slice of bread, butter and cheese for was the right one.

“Utena.” A small block of cheddar was snatched from the plate by small paws. “She’s about my age with long pink hair and blue eyes.” Slender hands demurely reached for a cup of water from a plain mug. “I’m looking for her; she is my prince,” was the explanation.

Each lead was sparse and inconclusive, but they were better than nothing. Though no one had ever seen this “Utena,” a few were quick to point out the port town of Acqaria. Word of the tomboyish heroine would most likely be there since people from all walks of life tended to straddle in by the docks. Unable to even sleep through a night at the inn, Anthy gathered her meager belongings and traveled by moonlight on the cobbled path towards the sea. She walked in silence past idle thieves, laying in wait, who seemed too spellbound to approach her. Placed within exotic brown features were emerald eyes set ablaze with an almost otherworldly drive. It was the look of either a madwoman or a desperate child. Thoughts continuously cycled through her mind. “Where is she?” If Utena was able to find Anthy, she would have done so already. “Just tell me where you are and I’ll be there!”

Far too calm to be frantic, Chu Chu peered out Anthy’s front coat pocket once the trace of salt in the air hit his nose. Thirty minutes later, he was thick in the bustle of a port city awakening for the new day. The noise of rolling carriages, steps swept and store banners unfurled seemed to go unnoticed by his friend, who promptly began to question people on the street.

One man waking up from a hangover seemed unusually eager to answer. “This ‘Uteney’…”

“U-te-na,” corrected Anthy.

“Whateva. ‘Bout the weirdest damn name I’ve eva heard for a fella.”

Chu Chu folded his arms as if to say ‘Get on with it.’

“Any stranger comin’ through like this ‘Ute-nah’ bloke would be restin’ up or lying dead in the ‘ospital no doubt. Us sailors had us a good ruff-n-tumble in the streets for tha’ past few nights. Any fighter worth his sword woulda been poundin’ ‘way in the fray.”

Anthy thanked him for his trouble and continued on. Senseless battle would not have appealed to Utena. However, just the thought of her friend being injured was enough to make Anthy seek directions to the hospital. “It wouldn’t hurt to check the roster once we’re there. If anything else, it’ll rule out the fact that she’s dead,” she tried to reassure Chu-Chu (albeit terribly).

Of course, there were the usual ill people lining the bleach scented hallways and lobbies, waiting with loved one or friends as they sought treatment. “Excuse me?” A heavy-set nurse glanced up from her paperwork to eye the bhindi wearing woman at the information desk. “I’m looking for someone. She’s about my age, taller than me, pink hair and blue eyes.”

The nurse went back to her forms. Several moments passed before she finally asked, “Name?”

“Utena.”

More moments. An exasperated sigh.

“Full name?”

Anthy blushed at her naiveté. At times she expected everyone to know about her prince since the tomboy was so popular at Ohtori. “Tenjou. Utena Tenjou.”

Chu-Chu tugged the inside of the coat pocket for more cheese while the hospital worker flipped over several forms. “System’s been down for a while,” she stated offhandedly, biting her bottom lip as she did so. “Had to do this mess by hand, including keeping track of John Does.” Anthy raised an eyebrow as the nurse continued. “Hmmm…ok…here. Someone kinda matching your description came in about a month ago. Could only manage to get parts of a name before the patient passed out.” She pointed to a “Tenjou, U. ” on the roster before grabbing a pen. “So the first name’s ‘Utena,’ correct?”

Anthy was already in the elevator by the time the nurse looked up. The mantra, “Room 326. Room 326,” kept spinning in her head. That was all the info she needed to read and know. She pressed the lit number 3 button again and in uncharacteristic impatience, lightly tapped her feet. One bell. Then another. The doors opened. Her pace quickened. The Intensive Care signs almost became a blur. She wouldn’t allow herself to focus on them; that would only cause more worry. Anthy wanted to be calm and smiling once she turned the knob to Room 326.

But there was no time to prepare her composure or straighten her clothes. The door to patient Tenjou’s room was already ajar. From the crack, the beginnings of a right leg wrapped in thick gauze could be seen. Coming from around the bed was a faint symphony of beeps droning from various machines. “You finally…came…for me,” spoke a weak and raspy voice. It tried vainly to chuckle in relief as the door opened wider. “I think I feel better already.”

Such familiar blue eyes, once listlessly staring at the television, grew large and full of hope, once they locked with Himemiya’s gaze.

She stood at the doorway and held back her tears. This was no recognizable prince. No noble spirit. Looking at her was a bandaged sack of limbs from slashed flesh healing at different rates. Long pink hair covered healing scars and unbandaged spots that escaped the brunt of such a brutal assault. However nothing could hold back such an infectious smile.

A smile. A smile? After everything that she went through, all of the emotions spent. How dare this person smile at her! The part of Anthy that was reawakened, the woman who could now fully feel anger and pain spoke with livid clearness at the long-legged man propped up on the hospital bed. “Why are you here?! And WHAT did you do to UTENA?!”
