Please, he prayed silently. Please, gods, let me have just one more night with him… All the while, knowing that he was the closest thing to these gods to whom he prayed that he knew existed, knowing that if there was a god or gods, then they had heard such pleas every day and night since time began, from billions of humans, animals, plants, and his own kind, and that the solitary plea of one small demigod would be utterly unheeded.
Still he prayed, though. Every night for ten years he had prayed, and Leon had always woken in the morning. It was a silly superstition, but he believed, perhaps, that if only he could maintain his vigil, watch his beloved sleep, and pray to the gods he never knew he believed in, then Leon would always wake in the morning…
It would not work tonight. He had felt it coming and had refused to accede to it, to give in to the inevitability of fate. Perhaps foolishly, he had hoped… but he had never really believed this could be beaten. Perhaps that was why he was still awake… to give his love the final vigil he deserved…
He had spent sixty years with this man. Before him, time had flown past, centuries gone in the blink of an eye… and now time had frozen for these last six decades, every day an eternity…
It could not end like this…
Leon slowly opened his eyes, blinking several times. They were unfocused for a moment, before he looked up and smiled.
“You’re awake,” D said with a soft, almost forced smile, still stroking his hair. “I’ll get your glasses…”
Leon’s withered hand stilled his own as it reached toward the table, wrapping weakly around it and bringing it to his pale lips for a soft kiss. “I’ve never needed those things to see you, D.”
He smiled slightly, the expression this time completely natural, and squeezed Leon’s hand lightly. D… even after he had learned his true name, he had always continued to call him by the single letter he had met him as.
“Leon…” he murmured, touched as he always was. Sixty years and he had yet to grow weary of Leon’s sometimes understated charm…
Leon smiled benignly, calmly, and looked up at him, his milky blue eyes catching his own gold and violet and refusing to let them go. His other hand reached up, only slightly shakily, and ran through his short black hair. For a moment, he only looked at him, as though lost in his reminisces. “You’re beautiful,” he finally said. “You haven’t changed at all, and I’m an old man, D… Why did you stay with me so long?”
He smiled slightly and stilled Leon’s hand in his hair, pressing his cheek into it. “Because I love you,” he said simply. “I would never leave you…”
“I wish I could have been better to you,” Leon murmured, still looking at him but almost appearing to speak to himself. “All these years, you deserved someone so much better…”
“Shh,” he said, squeezing his hand slightly. “Don’t speak like that, Leon…”
Leon smiled a little to show that he had heard. “I don’t know why you loved me, of all people… you’ve been so good to me, staying with me even now… I’m sorry I have to leave you…”
“Don’t say that!” He pressed his hands together with both of Leon’s between them. “You’re going to be with me for years yet…”
Leon smiled a little. “Do you really believe that, D?”
He tried to hold his head up and meet his eyes, but his vision blurred slightly and he had to turn his face away, blinking away the tears. He never had been able to lie to Leon…
“D, baby, don’t cry.” His hand slid from between D’s and touched his face again lightly, almost forcing him to look at him once more, through the blurry shimmer of unshed tears. “We both knew this was going to happen. We’ve always known.”
“I could almost forget, though…” He held Leon’s hand tightly. “It’s been so good with you, I tried to forget…”
“That was dumb…” Leon breathed as he closed his eyes. “It has to happen…”
“…I know.”
“Just don’t let Toutetsu eat me,” he said, cracking one eye open again. D tried to smile at him.
“You should know by now that he only eats live meat,” he told him quietly.
“Yeah, but he’s been wanting to take a bite out of me for sixty years…” Leon’s eyes fell closed again.
“Leon?” he asked, suddenly afraid that he was going.
“I love you, D,” his love replied as though he hadn’t heard him. “I always will…”
“I love you too,” he whispered. Leon smiled slightly. D bowed his head as the tears finally fell and sat there in the silence that stretched out forever.
