The
crimson spot glared up at her with the fervor of the Catholic’s accusing eye.
Sir
Integra Fairbrooke Wingates Hellsing was suddenly and overwhelmingly annoyed,
with a rush of feeling akin to that she felt on the field of battle. Looking
down at the drop of blood staining her freshly polished loafers, after having
come through the meeting with no other sign of the eruptive argument and her
own, regrettable, loss of temper, the woman’s annoyance reached a new peak.
Restraining her temper with a hard swallow, Integra walked to her bed and
roughly yanked her loafers off. For a moment, she remained still, taking a few
slow, deep breaths to control herself. Ice blue eyes regarded the drop of
blood, narrowing slightly as her fist curled involuntarily. It had been sheer
bliss to lose control, striking the Catholic as hard as she could. The feel of
breaking bone beneath her knuckles still carried the near-orgasmic power the
initial punch had. Memory of hot blood spattering over the treaty scattered on
the floor made her bite her lower lip and inhale slowly through her nose.
It
had been the typical meeting between Maxwell of Iscariot and herself. They had
begun exchanging sarcastic quips and cutting words at the very beginning,
ending eventually with him laughing manically and her pounding the desk to make
her point. Only, this time, she’d pounded his face, too. It had been a moment
of insanity, in all truth. He had yelled that the pagans would be cleansed from
the face of the earth; she had yelled back that she’d see the end of Iscariot
if it were the last thing she ever did alive. When Maxwell had snarled that it
would probably be the last thing she saw right before her monster tore her
throat out…her patience had finally snapped. With a blur of movement, she’d
broken the Italian’s nose and yelled for him to get the bloody hell out of her
office before she had that same monster use him for a mop to clean up his own
blood. It had astonished her, even more than him blinking in surprise, that
Maxwell had meekly gathered his scattered papers, holding a reddening
handkerchief to his face, and left her office without another word.
Now,
she perched limply on the end of her bed, loafer in hand, and sighed heavily.
The longer this wore on, the heavier her responsibilities seemed to hang on her
shoulders. Rubbing the bridge of her nose, Integra glared at the loafer and
tossed it across the room, reaching for her tie with the other hand. She froze
when, instead of the soft “thump” expected, the loafer simply disappeared into
the shadows gathered in the corner of her room.
“Alucard,”
she muttered under her breath, not bothering with a louder voice. “Why are you
lurking in my room?” Her voice showed the strain she was under, heavy as it was
with her restrained emotions. The darkness in her room seemed to writhe for a
few moments, and then a soft sound heralded her vampire’s entrance.
He
slid from the shadows, gleaming red amidst black, one white-gloved hand holding
her discarded loafer. Over the orange sunglasses, crimson eyes shone at her,
the sardonic smirk on his face giving her his mood quite clearly. Of course,
after so many years, Integra could have guessed his mood simply by the way he
entered the room. When he chose to play about in the shadows of her bedroom, it
meant he was bored and looking for diversion. What better game than to come
irritate his master?
“Not
tonight, Alucard. I’m in no mood for games. Leave my shoe and go.” Integra
turned away from him to place her other shoe beside the nightstand, glancing
over her shoulder when she didn’t feel his presence depart. “Now, Alucard.”
“A
bit tense tonight, my master?” His voice was closer than she liked it, and when
Integra swung around to glare at him, she found herself less than four feet
from the vampire’s chest. Rising to her feet, her eyes hardened as she narrowed
them at him. The vampire simply grinned back at her, holding out her loafer
like an offering. Integra looked at the shoe, then flicked her gaze back up to
Alucard’s broad smile.
“No,
I am not. I simply wish to get some rest while I have the chance. Leave the
shoe and go.” She crossed her arms, standing perfectly upright while the
vampire knelt, slowly, to place the shoe very deliberately at her feet. Still
kneeling, he gazed up at her, one eye gleaming through strands of
midnight-black hair.
“Shall
I leave it here, Master? Or should I put it in your closet?” The vampire’s grin
never wavered, even when she turned and marched away from him.
“Put
it in the closet then, with the other,” Integra snapped over her shoulder. “I
will retire for the night, and you will go back to your basement room.” There
was actual sound, indicating he was certainly feeling playful; Alucard only
made noise when he chose to. The closet door opened and shut, but her shoulders
did not relax. After so many years, she could sense quite easily when Alucard
had left a room, and he had not left hers. Turning, she fixed him with a chilling
glare. “I recall telling you to leave.”
“Yes,
Master.” His voice was lower now, and very close behind her. “I recall that as
well.”
Refusing
to be intimidated, she turned, looking up at him through narrow eyes. “What do
you want, Alucard?”
The
vampire’s grin broadened, and he simply held up a black pawn. Integra rolled
her eyes, giving him a cold look. “You’ve invaded my privacy, disobeyed my
orders and annoyed me simply to play a game of chess? Go ask Walter. I’m sure
he would enjoy such a thing.” She turned and strode to the windows, looking out
at the cold winter night, pointedly ignoring the almost plaintive click of the
pawn against her nightstand.
However,
when the closet door opened and shut again, she did turn around, eyes narrowing
further.
“Alucard!
Put that down!” The vampire grinned mischievously at her, a loafer caught
between his fangs. Then he simply slid back into the darkness and vanished,
leaving her fuming at an empty room. For a moment, Integra talked to herself,
reminding herself that chasing after him was exactly what he wanted, and that
she was above wasting time with demanding a shoe.
But
it was, after all, her shoe.
Growling
under her breath, in her stocking feet, the maiden stormed to her bedroom door,
yanked it open, and headed out into the hall.
When
the patio door to the west garden flew open, something in the shadows seemed to
laugh quietly. The platinum-haired woman stormed from the manor, ice-blue eyes
flashing like cold fire as she strode out onto the dew-soaked grass. Within
seconds, her socks and the cuffs of her rough wool trousers were sopping wet,
but Integra ignored the chill against her skin. A pause near the neatly clipped
rosebushes, and she spun on her heel, sending a pointed glare to the darkened side
of an oak tree.
“Alucard!
This has gone on long enough! Give me my shoe!” The vampire melted out of the
darkness, her loafer still held firmly between his fangs, crimson eyes glinting
with that devilish light she so hated to see. Tossing a lock of silver hair out
of her face, she stomped towards the tree, only to curse rather loudly when he
simply vanished. Integra took a deep breath, mentally counting backward as she
fought to control her temper. She would not, would not shriek like a
fishwife at this damnable creature in the middle of the night. Not standing in
her very own garden. For a moment, she had this glorious mental image of
slamming the heavy dungeon door shut on his smirking face as she sealed him
away forever. Never was that more of a temptation than when he became so damn
unruly like this. As Alucard’s laughter began ringing from beneath a hedge,
Integra knew that he was going to play this game all night. That he would lead
her around the garden until she was chilled through, then dart through the
house with the dedication of a child playing hide and seek. Her temper got the
better of her, and her mind went immediately to the one place she knew he would
not ignore. The only place that even she was not allowed. The maiden turned,
flashing a smile just as mocking towards the shrub, then disappeared inside.
Her
wet stocking feet left cold prints on the grey stone as she darted down the
hallway. Only once before had she come down this way with such haste, and never
for such a purpose. That one time had been out of fear, desperation. She had
sought safety, a rescue from her uncle and had received it at her vampire’s
destructive hands. Now, she ran down that corridor for a much more childish
reason…despite being much older. Reaching the door at the end of the hall, she
shoved it open with a shoulder to the steel, bursting into the silence that was
Alucard’s room. There! She slammed the door shut, catching her breath,
and walked across the room, looking down at the long, shrouded object. She knew
what it was, knew what it said, and knew what it looked like. This was the last
barrier, the only thing of his that she had never threatened, or had even
considered using against him. It seemed wrong, somehow, to use the monster’s
last haven against him, but now anger and the seed of petty childishness had
gotten the better of her. Even now, with the determination to get back at the
monster high in her, Integra still hesitated before pulling the shroud away.
It
was oddly beautiful, in a way. The gold trim, which she knew to be genuine,
gleamed softly in the muted light, and the script across the coffin’s bottom
continually caught her eye. The bird of Hermes is my name, she murmured
silently, tracing the script with an almost reverent finger. Eating my wings
to make me tame. Again, Integra wondered what the inscription meant. It had
never come up, in the discussions about Alucard with Walter. Nor had the
monster himself ever given her an indication. In fact, Alucard became extremely
hostile at mention to his coffin. As far as she was aware, only Seras Victoria
had ever touched it and remained animate afterwards, and only then to bear the
coffin along. Now, she ran her fingers over the polished surface, marveling at
how the black wood seemed to suck the light from the room, not even really
gleaming at all in the low light. She paced the length of it, slightly
surprised at how big the coffin itself was, and ran her hand across the silky
surface. In the space of a breath, Integra gazed down at her vampire’s last
domain and thought it beautiful.
Curiosity
was niggling, and the longer it took Alucard to sense where she was, the more
she wanted to know. The coffin’s lid was fastened down with two, surprisingly
small golden latches, and it took a moment’s work to unclasp them. This was the
last violation of his privacy, and with her hand on the lid, ready to lift,
clarity came back to her mind. The maiden looked down at her hand, at the
coffin’s shroud lying on the ground, and felt a sense of shame. Withdrawing her
hand, she lifted the shroud, struggling a little with amount of fabric, so easy
to remove, so hard to replace.
Everything
went dark. Complete silence fell as the thick, cloying shadows enshrouded her,
as icy cold as the lake water outside, and in the silence, she could hear the
muted roar which had been, for a moment, too loud for her to comprehend.
“STAY AWAY FROM MY COFFIN!!”
She was
battered, flung from one solid patch of darkness to another, finally to find
herself lying on the floor, her face inches from a very recognizable boot.
Integra rose to her feet immediately, tilting her chin up. She found herself
facing an infuriated vampire, one who she knew instinctively she could not
reason with. In truth, she knew this was less than she deserved. Becoming petty
and immature over a shoe was ridiculous, especially when she had other pairs
waiting upstairs. Her ice-blue eyes met the wild, darting gaze of her monster,
and she felt a chill come over her. Alucard had never, ever looked at her in
such a way before. Immediately, she pulled on the wards, trying to bring him
under a semblance of control.
It
very nearly had no effect.
The
monster looked at her, his blood-red eyes glowing viciously, and she felt for a
moment that he would have struck her, had the wards not prevented that much, at
least. Alucard’s growl was threatening, and when he leaned down, Integra
thought for a moment that perhaps that little prank had just cost her her life.
A white-gloved hand shot out, wrapping around her throat, as shadows shrieked,
swirling about them in a flurry, and with all of the noise, Integra couldn’t
make out what was going on.
Until she
hit her back…on padded crimson silk.
