I've got your back
Human here. I've posted before but didn't feel lead to finish my stories because the reviews were awesome but there weren't enough. I had a couple of authors pestering me about helping them with there stories as well but now, I'm slightly more patient. I was under a different name as well and I've deleted my old stories (wishing now that I didn't.
Kyo: Um... I'm sorry to interrupt, but I think they are waiting for a disclaimer.
Human: But I'm not done yet.
Kyo: But it's really really cold up here!
Human: Fine! I don't own them... any of them. I just like to play with them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A loud sigh reverberated through the crisp night air. As his breath rose in the form of misty fog, Kyo noticed the nights grew shorter. He couldn’t help but shiver as a cold gust of wind dragged across him, his bare skin prickling in defense. The smell of warm soups and hot food wafted up from the kitchen, intoxicating the air, and invading his senses. ‘5... 4...,’ Kyo thought, ‘3... 2... 1-’
“Kyo!” Shigure’s head popped up over the ledge. Perfect timing. “Dinner’s ready.” Another blast of wind shot at the two and Shigure almost fell from the ladder in an attempt to gather his robes closer to him. Once glance at Kyo and he immediately froze. Something was wrong. Kyo’s eyes were empty of his usual passion, the fire in his eyes usually matched his blazon hair. If his chest did not give evidence of breath with casual rise and fall, Shigure would have thought him dead.
‘What exactly has Kyo been thinking about out here…?’ Shigure snapped out of it and offered Kyo his hand, which oddly enough Kyo accepted. Normally, Kyo would have ignored it and jumped off the two story roof, evidence of his catlike prowess.
… But taking Shigure’s hand… It was an un-verbal, “I surrender.”
Yep, something was definitely up. Even Shigure, someone who was so helplessly self involved, could notice.
Kyo was helped down the ladder carefully by the inu, who wrapped the blanket Tohru sent him out with around the cat’s bear arms. Eyes downcast, Kyo made his way to the dining room.
‘A challenge,’ Shigure thought at Kyo’s behavior. In an attempt to rouse him, Shigure sensually rubbed his hand up and down Kyo’s covered arms.
“Pervert!” was not Kyo’s response. Instead he mewled and leaned into the touch, thankful for the warmth that brought life back into his appendages.
“Kyo, are you okay?” Tohru took the liberty to offer Kyo tissues for his freely running nose.
“Aachoo!” was muffled into Kleenex.
“Bed!” was Shigure’s immediate response.
“I’m fine,” Kyo muttered. Tohru breathed a sigh of relief. It was the first thing Kyo said all day.
“Who’s the caretaker here?” Shigure quipped, raising an eyebrow.
“Tohru is,” Yuki responded as he descended the stairs and took his place across from Kyo. A light blush fell on Tohru in response to the simple statement.
“If you would like…” Tohru began and fidgeted, fingering the edge of her apron. “I could go upstairs and eat with you.
Kyo thought for a moment. Company would be nice, though he’d never he’d never admit it out loud.
“If that’s what you want, fine,” Kyo stated trying to make it sound like he was simply conceding to the will of Tohru, though he wasn’t really fooling anyone but himself.
“Try keeping your hands off her, Kyo. Those raging hormones of yours better not cloud your judgement,” Shigure said as kyo rose.
*BAM*
“Stupid perverted inu…” Kyo muttered as he made his way out. The bump on Shigure’s head was evidence that Kyo still existed somewhere in that empty shell.
Five minutes later, Kyo was upstairs with a tray of food set across his lap and Tohru was pulling a radiator in and set is as close as possible to Kyo. Watching Tohru plug in the radiator, Kyo pulled the food on the tray closer to him.
“Thank you…” Kyo muttered.
“I don’t mind,” Tohru said as she settled on the edge of her futon and started on her dinner. An attempt at friendly banter went back and forth for a few minutes before Tohru finally got fed up with it.
“Alright,” Tohru said pushing her food to the side as if it were some sort of barrier against her words. “What’s wrong?”
“I… umm.” Kyo swallowed hard as Tohru’s soft ivory hands slipped into his bronze hands, calloused from vigorous training.
“I’ll never beat him, will I?” Yeah, that damn rat again. “this stupid curse, this beast inside me… this is who I really am. I will never be accepted into my family because of it. I can never accept myself because of it.” Kyo’s head, if at all possible, hung even lower. “It’s not fair,” he whispered, fingering his beads.
Lines of worry furrowed into Tohru’s brow as she gathered to right words to express her thoughts. She slowly drew his hands to her chin.
“you’re right, it isn’t fair,” She conceded to that, but she wasn’t finished yet. “It isn’t fair that you are different from everyone else, even among the cursed in your family. It’s not fair that you get locked up like some kind of animal after high school as everyone else gets to live a free life,” Tohru’s eyes watered. “But it isn’t your fault that you are cursed. Kyo, what makes you who you are is not what happens to you, but how you react to what happens. Like if someone cowers in fear because they are afraid to stand up for what the believe in would make them a coward.” Tohru turned Kyo’s hands in hers examining the calluses that Kyo earned, testimony of his strength in times of weakness.
“You…” Tohru choked up with her tears, “You work so hard!” Tears fell from her eyes and onto Kyo’s wrists as she kissed his palms. “You never give up and you are always so kind to me.”
Kyo lifted his head to gaze at he beautiful, caring, and compassionated young girl in front of him. His eyes watered as he leaned in to embrace the only person in the world who could make him feel so incredibly special.
*Poof!*
Tohru smiled and stroked Kyo’s orange fur until he drifted off to sleep. She positioned him onto the bed and pulled the blanket over him. Gathering the dishes in his room after she lowered the heat from the radiator, she smiled again when she heard another poof behind her. Pulling herself together, she left the room.
“KUSO NEZUMI!” Tohru heard the next morning as she cooked breakfast. ‘Good, he’s back to normal!’ Tohru thought to herself. The all to familiar smile returned to her face and she began to hum.
