Mommy Dearest

Prologue- The Final Straw

The Hitachiin brothers didn't have to say anything to each other because, like so many other times, they were thinking the same thing: they were late and they were angry about it.

*It's because Hikaru had to argue with the professor over that last assignment* Kaoru privately grumbled to himself. Why couldn't he just have spent a little more time doing it instead of haggling afterwards? And now they would miss the first few minutes of Host Club; the time when everyone was setting up. The time when they could be with Haruhi and tease her however they wanted.

Well, not however they wanted. That had been a discussion between the two of them for several nights in a row now. It was hard to talk about; Kaoru tried to convince his brother that he wouldn't get in the way if he wanted to try and upgrade his relationship with Haruhi, but he was met with resistance.

“Don't be stupid, it's not like that. Not like I would replace you.” Hikaru's face was angry but he reached for Kaoru's hand and that touch was very reassuring. “But imagine if she wanted to be like, with both of us at the same time. Wouldn't that be amazing?”

Kaoru had thought so as well, but didn't dare dream something like that could happen. “What if we ask and she's not interested though?”

“We won't ask, we'll eliminate the competition and she'll want to be with us. Why wouldn't she want to be with us? We spend all our time together every day. Except-”

Except for when Tamaki was there, of course. Then it was quite difficult to be around their classmate. Which brings us back to why both of them were annoyed at being late.

And sure enough, upon busting through the doors to the Third Music Room, Tamaki was already talking animatedly with his favorite host. Haruhi's face seemed sour, but she allowed him to continue ranting and raving, only offering a curt remark every once in awhile to see him get depressed.

“Yay, you're here!” Honey greeted them and held his bunny up for hugs, but they were in a little bit of a rush.

“Sorry, we have important classwork to discuss,” they said slyly in unison, and proceeded to make their way over to Haruhi. “Oy, Haruhi...”

But she didn't hear them. Tamaki was looking particularly dismayed and she was laughing cheerfully.

“Now now, don't make such a fuss!” She was saying, as Tamaki faked more tears, causing her to laugh more.

“Haruhi-” the twins began again, but now the bespectacled figure of Kyoya had approached.

“My my, what have you done? This is no mood for our prince to be in.” He leaned an elbow on Haruhi's shoulder. “If we lose customers due to his pitiful state, I wonder who is going to be paying for it.”

She scowled at him. “Now it's my mood that is ruined.”
Hikaru opened his mouth to try again, but he was interrupted once more. Tamaki had flung his arms around Kyoya, still wailing. “Mommy, tell our daughter that I am responsible, despite appearances! What will I do if she doesn't accept Daddy's wishes?”

Kyoya played along, smiling and tossing a hand up in dismay. “Tamaki really, a responsible Daddy would be a strong role model for his daughter. Not a crybaby.” This produced a new fit of laughter in Haruhi, though she tried to hide it behind her hand.

Kaoru felt a hand grip tightly around his arm. He looked into his brother's face, identical to his except for the eyes. Hikaru's eyes said he had snapped, quietly, under the pressure of jealousy.

And he couldn't deny that he felt it too. Haruhi never ignored them before. How could she possibly be interested in the offer they wanted to make to her, if she didn't even notice them? At least, didn't notice them when the Lord and the mastermind were around. Yes, Kaoru was jealous too.

They read each other's eyes for a few moments longer, and Haruhi did notice them then. “Ah, Kaoru, Hikaru! I didn't see you come in! You won't believe what Tamaki is proposing...” she trailed off, her eyes searching their faces. “What's wrong?”

Mirror images of one another, they turned to her and answered in one voice. “Maybe we're feeling sick. Excuse us.” And they turned to leave for the restroom.

In the stall, where they were sure no one could hear them, Hikaru explained what he wanted to do. And Kaoru accepted. Even if his dream would never happen, at least Hikaru would have a chance.
