FY The Kana Chronicles

Title: Prologue
Author: Jigoku no Miko
Author’s notes: Angry morning people make lifeless night people

I made an escape while no one watched,
And inside my heart
I had just one thought
It was freedom that I wanted
Freedom that I got
Ready or not…

A cold spring breeze blew harshly outside causing the shutters on apartment 2c’s windows to slam against the building.
*Beep, beep, beep, SLAM*
A small black alarm clock went off before a long fingered white hand slammed the off button.
“Ugh, whoever invented alarm clocks should be drug out in to the street and shot.” A young girl moaned sitting up in her bed. She threw back the covers and inched her way towards the bathroom, a moment later the shower turned on. After a while she returned to the bedroom and got dressed in her normal black attire. Flipping her head down she dried her hair before flinging it back over her shoulders. The familiar red fluff that she hated so much framed her face as she applied a small amount of foundation and blush. Picking up a small clip off of the dresser she drew the red waves back and clipped them up off of her neck. “You look hideous as usual.” She sighed exiting the bedroom and starting the coffee pot. Grabbing her newspaper from the hallway she sat down at the small kitchen table that complemented the tiny manila kitchen so well. Flipping through the pages she stopped on the reading preferences page and scrolled up the list from the bottom. “Lets see where did we rank this week?” She sighed scanning the list with her finger. Her eyes stopped for a moment when she reached 12. “Well there’s If Roses Could Sing.” She whispered continuing her voyage up the list. Once again her eyes stopped for a moment this time on number 7. “Hunting Heartache.” She mumbled, finishing the list she stopped one final time on number 2. “Red Eyes and Dying Cries. Number two this week, oh well what’s the difference besides the number of zeros in my paycheck?” She stood and poured a cup of coffee before walking to the window and gazing out over the streets below. Many cozy little shops lined the street as people went on their way buzzing to and froe. She took a sip of coffee before a rumble let loose above and the rain began pouring down, a large bolt of lightening let loose across the velvet sky and reflected in the girls dark purple eyes. The phone rang loudly bringing her out of her state of amazement with the lightening and she glared at it out of the corner of her eye. “Dani, the signings canceled due to the rain rescheduled for Wednesday.” She predicted before the phone rang again. Picking up the portable, which she had thrown on the couch the night before she hit the talk button.
“Moshi-moshi.” She sighed.
“Hey, Kana.” A male voice said a little too enthusiastically for so early in the morning.
“Hey Dani, let me guess signing is cancelled due to the rain rescheduled for Wednesday?”
“Chikusho, how do you do that?” He spat mockingly.
“It’s a talent, I’m blessed.” She rolled her eyes.
“Kawaii, so since your plans have been canceled do you want to do something?” He questioned his hopefulness obvious in his voice.
“Uh… like what?”
“I don’t know go get some breakfast, knowing you, you weren’t going to eat anything.”
“True… but I don’t know.” She fidgeted hoping her whining would get her out of this again.
“Kana, come on you barely go anywhere but your publishers, you don’t even come to see me anymore and I’m your publicist. You need to get out more stop being a hermit.”
“I’m not a hermit!”
“Prove it! I’ll pick you up in 15 minutes.”
“Fine!”
“See you than.” The other end of the phone went dead and Kana hit the talk button once more before throwing the phone back on the couch.
“Chité.” She muttered hitting her forehead once she realized what she had gotten herself into. “Great, I have to go on a date. Yippee.” She muttered putting on her shoes and draining the coffee from her cup. Picking up the remnants of her conversation last night she put the white candles and spell book away before going to work scraping the candle wax off of the table, obviously the conversation had lasted longer than she thought.
About a half an hour later she was buzzed from out front of the building.
“Who is it?” Kana questioned pressing the small respond button than releasing it.
“The boogie man who do you think?” Dani mocked.
“Sorry I don’t have any kids ya got the wrong apartment.” She yelled back.
“Kana come on buzz me in I’m getting soaked.”
“What if I don’t want to?” She taunted.
“Come on!”
“All right, all right. I’ll be down in a minute.” She sighed pressing a small button that would unlock the front door. Grabbing her trench coat out of the closet and locking the door behind her as she left. Stepping off the elevator she spotted Dani wringing out his coat. Walking over she stopped in front of him. “Leave it to you to not take an umbrella.” She mocked as he wiped the blonde matting of hair off of his forehead.
“This was just between my car and the front door.” He muttered putting his coat back on. The two left the building and got into a small black sports car down the stretch of road.
“Well no wonder you got soaked.” She cocked her head once they were in the car. “You parked half a block away.”
“Well it was this or park in a fire zone and knowing my luck I’d have gotten toed.” He started the car and the two pulled out in to the busy streets of Tokyo. Dani pulled into the parking lot of a small café and the two headed in and got a booth in the back. An all too cheery for her own good waitress came over with a small pad of paper.
“Hello, what can I get ya today?” She questioned.
“Uh, I’ll have a grand slam special and a cup of coffee.” Dani ordered without even looking at the menu.
“Alrighty and for you miss?” The waitress turned to face Kana who was staring out the window at the storm.
“White toast and coffee no cream.” She whispered keeping her eyes focused on the dark clouds that seemed to be swallowing the city.
The waitress finished writing their order down before taking the menus which neither one of them had bothered to look at and went back to the kitchen. Dani looked at Kana delicately.
“Is the storm really that interesting?” He questioned as she continued to stare out the window.
“Mmhmm, I’ve always loved them, ever since I was a little girl. I used to go out side in my bathing suit and dance in the spring showers.” She whispered reminiscing about her life before.
“Kana I found you when you were fifteen, you didn’t have any place to call home, barely spoke Japanese and were severely depressed.”
“Your point being?” She turned to face him.
“Are you ever going to tell me where you came from? What happened before you came to Japan?”
“Dani you’re my best friend but I don’t think any of that stuff is important.” She whispered propping her elbows up on the table and folding her hands so she could set her chin on their backside.
“If you don’t think it’s that important then why where you just sitting here talking about it?” He crossed his arms over his chest and sat back in the booth.
”Why do you constantly try to get this out of me?” She sighed exasperated.
“Because it’s better to talk about things than to keep it all bottled up inside. Kana please tell me what happened.”
“Can we please just change the subject?” She put her hands over her face before running them back over her hair.
“No dammit I’m worried about you.”
“Why?”
“Your last three books have been about heartache, suicide, death and misery. Those are just a few hints to tell me something’s wrong. Kana are you depressed again?”
“Again? When did I stop?” She muttered under her breath. “Why do you care so much anyways?”
“Because I don’t want to see you go down the shitter you’re a talented, beautiful, smart, charming girl and I don’t want to see you upset because it hurts me when you’re sad. Ever since the day I’ve met you, you’ve… something about you has fascinated me I don’t know what it was but one day I realized that I had- that I had fallen in love with you.” He whispered clenching one fist tightly as a tear ran down his cheek. Kana sat motionless with shock, her eyes wide. “I’m- I’m sorry but, I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.” He whispered as Kana continued to sit motionless. “Well aren’t you going to say something?” He looked up at her shocked face. “Say something please.” He begged with his eyes.
“I-I have to go.” She whispered before getting up and walking past him. Once she was past the booth she began speed walking than broke into a run out the door.
“DAMN IT!” She heard Dani yell punching the table.
‘I want to leave this world a hey Subaru could you help?’ Kana ran down the street as fast as she could getting soaked along the way. Not paying attention to where she was going she accidentally ran into someone.
“Oof.” She fell backwards onto the ground. The man she had run into kneeled in front of her, his light purple hair was still perfectly dry along with the rest of him.
“Are you all right?” He questioned helping her to her feet.
“You know you should be more careful where your going you could really hurt yourself.”
“You’re right, I’m sorry did I hurt you?” She questioned meeting his gaze. The person she thought was a man was merely a boy of 19 at the most; his brown eyes were intense and seemed to see right into her soul. Kana tried to tare her gaze from his but found it useless it was like there was some force there freezing her in place. “I’m- I’m fine.” She choked out after a moment.
“Are you sure? You seem kind of out of it?”
“Yes I’m sure.”
“Where were you off to in such a hurry?” He questioned.
“I was a…” She trailed off as what had happened in the café came back to her.
“I see, a fight with a friend was it?” He smirked.
“How did you know that?” She wondered aloud as their eyes continued to stay locked on one another.
“I know a lot more than you think.” He smiled before waving his hand in front of her face, instantly Kana was unconscious and he picked her up.
“Wish granted.” He whispered before the two disappeared in a flash of white light.
