Summary: Ginji invites Ban to a celebration, but neglects to mention a few of the details beforehand. Sequel to "A Cure for Distraction."

The smell of fresh pizza rose up from the stack of boxes in Ban's arms, making his stomach growl so loudly it echoed in the stairwell.
"Ah, this smells so good!" he said blissfully. Taking the steps two at a time, he looked up to where his partner waited in their newly-rented, fully-furnished apartment. "It's good to get paid! Ginji better appreciate it that I didn't take a single bite out of this yet!"
Maintaining such a heroic level of self-control only seemed fair since Ginji had insisted on paying for the entire meal out of his own half of the GetBackers' earnings. (Drooling on it a little didn't count; Ginji would've been drooling, too, if he'd been the one to drive halfway across town with this delicious aroma filling the car.)
"Ban-san!" a familiar voice that wasn't Ginji's greeted him at the top of the stairs. He was surprised to find two people standing outside the door to the apartment.
"Huh? Threadspinner, what're you doing here?" he said, not the least concerned about sounding friendly. After all, Ginji had only ordered three pizzas, which was barely enough for the two of them.
Kazuki didn't seem to notice his lack of welcome, or chose to ignore it. Jubei nodded curtly to him as he joined them at the door; Ban nodded back before remembering the Needle-master couldn't see the gesture, but Jubei cracked a little smile as if he knew it anyway.
"Ginji-kun invited us to lunch today to celebrate the Getbackers' latest success - his treat!" Kazuki said cheerfully. "I see you're celebrating too," he added, glancing at the stack of pizzas that filled Ban's arms.
"Nah, you got the wrong date," Ban said casually. "The GetBackers are celebrating today! It's just me, Ginji, and the best pizza money can buy!"
"Oh?" Kazuki frowned. "No, I'm certain our date was for today. Ginji called just a little while ago to remind us."
"Jeeze, the idiot double-booked," Ban muttered, shaking his head. "Too bad! You'll just have to..."
At that second the door flew open and Ginji himself appeared, smiling his usual million-megawatt smile at all of them. To Ban's surprise, he came right out and closed the door behind him.
"Kazuki-san, Jubei-san, you're right on time! Ooh, Ban-chan, that smells sooo good!" He took a deep breath, then lifted a lid and peeked inside. "Ah-ah, you didn't eat it all before you got here, good for you Ban-chan!" he added, laughing.
"Of course I didn't!" Ban replied, sounding offended at the idea that he would do such a thing. "But I wasn't saving any for these guys. You got mixed up, Ginji - or did you invite your friends to lunch without telling me?"
"Oh, whoops - didn't I mention that?" Ginji said. "I'm going out for the afternoon with Kazuki-kun and Jubei-kun, to celebrate a little. Just us three from the old days - sorry, Ban-chan!"
"What?! You ordered this, and made me drive all the way across town to get it!" Ban would have whacked his beloved partner a good one if his hands weren't full of precious pizza. Ginji knew it, too, and gave him a sheepish grin. Then, to add to Ban's bewilderment, he stepped close, put his hands on Ban's hips, and leaned across the armload of pizzas to give Ban a kiss.
"I ordered that for you, Ban-chan," Ginji said, eyes sparkling. "My treat! I left something else inside for you, too, to go with it."
Ginji stepped back, giving Ban's hips a little squeeze before he let go, and then pushed the apartment door open for him. "There you go, Ban-chan - enjoy!"
"Heh?" Ban gaped at him. Grinning, Ginji grabbed his two friends' arms and headed for the stairs. The next thing Ban knew, he was standing in the empty hallway alone with his growling stomach and his pizzas.
"Ginji - idiot!" he yelled as he kicked his way through the door and then slammed it shut with his elbow. "You stood me up?!?"
He knew he should be pleased to have all the pizza to himself, but he wasn't; he was disappointed and annoyed, and underneath that, baffled (and hurt). Still, the aroma of fresh pizza was calling out to him, so he stomped across toward the dining area, cursing and growling with every step. "What the hell does he mean, going off like that and standing me up? Inconsiderate, selfish little...! Well, fine, I'll just enjoy this all myself, then!" he snapped.
He stopped short in his tirade when a sound caught his ear - the soft sound of a voice, somewhere nearby. Not Ginji's, and not outside the door. There was someone else in the apartment.
Ban froze, the hair on the back of his neck stood and end and his senses came on full alert. He heard it again, more clearly this time since he wasn't shouting: a soft, quiet laugh. Unconsciously clutching the pizzas in front of him, he followed the sound around the corner, toward the bedroom.
"Who's - ?" He stopped short. The pizzas slid out of his hands and crashed to the floor when Ban saw what was there - what Ginji, apparently, had left waiting for him in the bedroom.
"What the fuck?" Ban gasped, and immediately felt a rush of heat in his face as his own words echoed in his ears, entirely too suggestive considering what had inspired them.
Akabane Kuroudou, the infamous, deadly Dr. Jackal himself, was there, kneeling at the foot of the bed - kneeling, moreover, with his hands raised a little above his head and his wrists tied securely to the tall bedposts of the ridiculous canopied bed (which Ban had hated on sight, but it was a furnished apartment, the first decent place he and Ginji had been able to afford in ages, so they took what they got). Akabane's trademark coat and his shirt had been neatly folded over a chair nearby and his wide-brimmed hat set on top of them; his shoes were by the door. His slim, muscular back and arms rippled as he turned his head toward Ban.
Akabane looked up at him over his scarred shoulder, lips curved in a grin and eyes gleaming.
"I was just wondering the same thing myself, a moment ago," he said mildly.
...
When Akabane had arrived at the apartment twenty minutes ago, he'd been amused to find that Ginji was as terrified as ever of him, but also sharply disappointed, especially since it was Ginji who had insisted he come up and see the new place he and Ban had just moved into a few days before.
"Ginji-kun," he said, smiling but pouting a little as he followed the nervous blond into the main room. "I thought you were getting over your fear of me, after the last time we were together."
"Yeah... " Ginji fidgeted. "That was different..."
"It certainly was!" Akabane said. "I never expected so much - interest - from you and from Midou-kun. It was quite enjoyable."
That had been weeks ago, and Akabane had caught himself smiling for days afterwards at the memory: the accidental discovery that both of the GetBackers were secretly as attracted to him as he was to them, their agreement to refrain from using any of their special powers while they explored that attraction for an afternoon, and the pleasantly exhausting (and almost entirely non-violent) sexual activities that followed. He'd allowed himself to do things he'd never expected to do with anyone, and truthfully, he wouldn't mind doing some of them again sometime - but, apparently, not today, since Ginji was back to being his usual, jittery self again.
Ginji did blush bright red at the reminder of what they'd done that time, as Akabane had expected, but he backed away and laughed nervously.
"Yeah, it was, um, enjoyable," he said, although he sounded so doubtful that Akabane frowned, wondering for the first time if Ginji had really enjoyed it as much as he'd said he did. "But, you know, you had your hands tied then," Ginji went on, "and Ban-chan was here..."
"Oh, isn't he here now?" Akabane asked, peering around the place.
"He'll be back any minute!" Ginji said quickly - so quickly that Akabane wondered if it was true.
He couldn't quite decide if it was amusing or just tiresome to have Ginji act so nervous around him, prancing around just out of reach like a terrified mouse. The blush on Ginji's face, and the memory of how Ginji had looked and felt and tasted, made Akabane decide that it was in fact more disappointing than fun. Apparently their previous encounter had only been a fluke, after all. He set his disappointment aside with a resigned sigh, but he couldn't resist teasing Ginji a little more.
"I'm not here to fight with you, you know - not this time, certainly! Would it make you more comfortable if I allow you to tie my hands again, Ginji-kun?" he asked in a playful tone, holding out his arms.
Ginji looked at his hands doubtfully, but at least he did stop backing away.
"Well, now that you mention it... But, still, without Ban-chan here," Ginji continued, muttering nervously to himself. Then he caught himself and laughed a little, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're still pretty scary, Akabane-san, even that way, with everything else about you..."
"What else?" Akabane asked, frowning. Of course, it was his intention to look intimidating, even frightening, for professional reasons, but at the moment Ginji's reaction was far more inconvenient than gratifying.
"Well, for one thing... " Ginji began, doubtfully, chewing on his thumb for a second. "Even if I tied your hands together, you could still creep up on me...Without Ban to watch my back... You move so fast!"
"Ah, I see. Suppose I couldn't move around so easily, would that help any?" Akabane asked curiously.
"Oh!" Ginji brightened up. "Well, that might help. Maybe..." he looked around the place, and Akabane was highly amused to realize he was actually seriously considering the idea of binding his hands to something. "Well, the only place I can think of is here..."
Ginji sidled away, still fidgeting nervously. Akabane followed him to another room, which turned out to be the bedroom. He immediately understood what Ginji was thinking of when he looked inside, although the sight of the big, oak four-poster bed with its ruffled canopy made him chuckle.
"It came with the place," Ginji explained quickly. "We didn't pick that out. Ban said it looks stupid. It's pretty comfortable, though."
"I see."
Grinning, he walked past Ginji (who controlled himself and only shrunk away from him a little bit), and then raised his arms to take hold of the posts at the foot of the bed. Standing between them, he could reach each one easily with just a slight stretch of his arms.
"They seem quite sturdy," he said, reassuringly, even though he knew his blades could cut the solid oak posts as easily as butter. "Would you feel safe if I couldn't move from here?"
"Hm," Ginji said, looking at him and at the bed posts doubtfully. "I'm not sure... I guess I could try it. Let's see..."
He rummaged for a few seconds in the drawer of a dresser that matched the bed, and came up with a kerchief in each hand.
"Maybe this will work. If you don't mind, that is!" Ginji laughed, blushing, as if apologizing for his silliness. Akabane decided to indulge him for the moment - it was Ginji-kun, after all. And maybe, if he did this, Ginji would become comfortable enough to recall the interest he'd had before.
But when Ginji came over to him with the kerchiefs in hand, he balked and shrunk down into himself. He looked up at Akabane with big, scared eyes.
"What else frightens you so much, Ginji-kun?" Akabane asked softly. "Besides my hands and my blades, that is?"
"Well, it's - your coat, and your scars, and besides all that you're so tall, Akabane-san!" Ginji answered in a rush. "Sorry, but you're just really intimidating with all of that!"
Akabane smiled indulgently. "Well, then, let's see what we can do to put you at ease on all of those counts, Ginji-kun."
So, he'd removed his coat and shirt, so that Ginji could see the scars and get used to them; he'd knelt, so that Ginji wouldn't have to look up at him; he'd raised his arms and let Ginji - when he got brave enough to come close - tie his wrists to the bedposts.
Then, just when Ginji stepped back and Akabane flexed his wrists to test the knots, waiting to see if Ginji's attitude toward him would change, the doorbell buzzed - and Ginji giggled. Suddenly, he transformed, not into the surprisingly fascinated and assertive lover he'd become on that previous occasion, but back into his usual, cheerful, cheeky self. The change was as dramatically different from the frightened mouse he'd been a moment before as Ginji-kun was from Raitei, but far more baffling. He grinned when Kazuki's voice called through the door from the hallway.
"All right! Kazuki-kun is exactly on time!"
Akabane opened his mouth to ask what that meant, but Ginji was already waving to him from the bedroom door - and winking. "Bye, Akabane-san! See you later!" And before Akabane could say anything else, he disappeared.
Seconds later, while he considered whether to cut himself free or wait to see if Ginji returned, he heard the voices from the open door; he thought one of them was Ban's, but he couldn't hear what was said. Then the door slammed, and he heard Ban swearing up a storm and stomping around out there, baffled and furious that Ginji had stood him up and gone off with his friends, leaving him alone in their new apartment.
For a moment Akabane flexed his hands, ready to draw out his blades and release himself. He wasn't much happier with Ginji-kun at that moment than Ban was.
Then, suddenly, he understood it all. Akabane started to laugh.
---
"Ginji set all this up?!" Ban said after he heard Akabane's brief explanation. "That crazy idiot! What the hell is he thinking! What made him think I wanted you to go with my pizza?"
Akabane glanced down at the floor, at the boxes that had crashed in a pile at Ban's feet, and then, slowly and deliberately, he gazed his way up the entire length of Ban's body to his face.
"Ban-kun," he said, "it's not like you to be so - wasteful - is it?"
Ban stared at him in disbelief a second longer. His face was not the only thing that felt hot, now. He started to remember how Akabane's skin felt to his touch, how he tasted, and how he'd hissed and arched his back in response to Ban's hands and mouth on him. And he remembered how much Ginji seemed to like seeing him and Akabane together, and how Ginji had a sometimes maddening ability to know what someone wanted, even if the person didn't know yet.
He started to grin. He pushed his dark glasses down his nose to turn his own gaze hard on Akabane's body. Thin lips parted and eyes widened a little, as if Akabane could feel the heat of his eyes.
Ban stepped over the mound of pizza boxes and moved closer, stopping just behind Akabane's shoulder to stare down at him. Akabane watched him out of the corner of his eye, his smile fading to a mere quirk of his lips that was either a suggestion or a challenge. Ban reached down, and only touched one strand of long, dark hair, but it was enough to make Akabane's eyelids fall half shut.
"Well," Ban said with an exaggerated sigh, as if he was merely resigned to the situation, "I suppose I can't let the treat Ginji ordered up for me go to waste after he went to all this trouble, then, can I?"
