Chapter 1: School Daze
Kasumi rolled over in bed, tossing some blankets to the ground.
(Man, it’s way too hot in here), she thought, wiping some light brown hair out of her face. Just then, her alarm clock went off. She reached out with one hand, turning it off. The door to her room opened a crack.
“Kasumi, you’d better get dressed soon. You're starting High School today,” a low voice called out to her.
“Yeah, I know, George. Is the team ready?’ she asked as she dug out some clean clothes.
“Yes, everyone’s had breakfast and are in their Pokeballs waiting for you,” George said in a dull monotone.
After getting an outfit, Kasumi opened the door the rest of the way. George, who had been her father's Slowking, was walking down the hallway.
(I’ve been living with him all my life, but it never stops feeling weird to be around a Pokemon that can talk), Kasumi thought as she rushed to the bathroom. She reached behind the shower curtain and turned on the water, letting it heat up while she stripped. She looked in the mirror.
(Sheesh, are my boobs ever going to any get bigger?) she thought, turning to the side, her chest just barely sticking out at all. Kasumi did this every morning, checking herself out, wondering if she was ever going to be more than an A-Cup.
After looking in the mirror for a few more lingering seconds, Kasumi pulled back the shower curtain just enough to let her in. (Man, this is so cool! I managed to get into Poke High, the best trainer school in all of Japan!) Kasumi thought as she lathered up her hair.
After washing up, she got out of the shower, quickly drying off and getting dressed. She ran downstairs. She went straight to the kitchen.
“Hey George, I’m just gonna grab a Poptart,” she said as she swiped one right as it popped up. She grabbed her belt with all her Pokeballs attached to it.
“Have a good day,” George said as she rushed out the door, Poptart in one hand and belt in the other.
Kasumi arrived at the bus stop just as it arrived. She climbed in, shoving her Poptart into her mouth while reaching into her pocket to pay the fare, only to realize that she’d left it all at home.
“It’s alright, I’ll pay for you,” a sweet-sounding voice from one of the seats said. A girl wearing a light blue kimono with pink hair walked up holding out a handful of change.
“Thanks,” Kasumi said as she walked the rest of the way onto the bus, followed by several other people. Kasumi sat down in the first available seat, which just so happened to be right next to the pink-haired girl, who upon closer inspection was bustier than Kasumi; she was a full cup size bigger.
“Hey, thanks for helping me out. I’m Kasumi,” she said, extending her hand.
The pink-haired girl gently took it, shaking it. “I’m Sakura, and it’s no big deal. I’m pretty forgetful myself,” she said, letting go of Kasumi’s hand.
“Well, I still want to repay you if I can,” Kasumi said, trying to think of anything she could do.
“Alight, promise to be my friend.”
Kasumi nodded. “Okay, so why don’t you tell me a bit about yourself?”
Sakura began talking about some of her interests. “Basically all things traditional, but flower arrangement is by far my favorite. That’s why my whole team is Grass types. I know it’s not that great to specialize, but I like them so much. Besides, I’m good at strategy,” she said.
“So you’re a trainer, too?” Kasumi asked.
“Yeah, I just got into Poke High.”
Kasumi smiled. “Really? I’m starting there too.”
Just then, the bus arrived at the school.
“Well, I hope we end up in the same class,” Sakura said as they got off.
“Yeah, that would be nice,” Kasumi commented as she and all the other students got off the bus. They were greeted by none other than the headmaster of the school, Lance.
“All right, all new Intermediate Rank students, come with me to the testing grounds. We’ll decide your homeroom according to how well you do in practice battles against some of the teachers,” Lance explained as he lead everyone to the back of the school. Lined up were twenty of the teachers, each one with a number pinned to their chest, and in front of them was a drum filled with paper.
“Twenty of you step up and reach in. Take out a piece of paper and pair off with the teacher who has the matching number.”
Kasumi and Sakura walked up along with several others, each one taking a turn to reach in, pulling out a small strip of paper. Everyone looked at theirs and then at the teacher. Kasumi got number Ten.
(Okay, now who’s number ten?)
As soon as she saw who she had to go up against, she dropped her slip. Some boy with short dark hair walked over to her. “You dropped this. Who you got anyways…wow, that sucks. Sabrina’s strong,” he said, walking away.
(Crap! I don’t stand a chance! I just hope she doesn’t beat me too badly), Kasumi thought before going up to Sabrina, who had a distant, cold look to her that made Kasumi nervous.
“Let's begin,” Sabrina said, putting a hand on Kasumi’s shoulder, causing her to flinch instinctively. A few seconds later, Kasumi found herself standing on a battle field on the opposite side from Sabrina.
“To make things fair, I’m going to use only the weakest Pokemon on my team,” Sabrina said, a Pokeball levitating up.
(Wow, she really does have psychic powers, just like people say), Kasumi thought to herself before grabbing one of her own Pokeballs. “I know that we’re probably going to lose, but let's try our best, Ampharos!”
The large Electric Pokemon stood with its tail shining brightly.
“Kadabra,” Sabrina said, calmly releasing her Pokemon.
“Alright Ampharos, start off the battle with a Thunder Punch.”
Ampharos charged at Kadabra, who made no attempt to dodge it. (Alright, I guess she really is going to take it easy on me).
“Confusion,” was the only thing that Kasumi heard before the thud of her Ampharos hitting the ground, knocked out.
(Huh?!)
“I may be using my weakest Pokemon, but I’m not going to hold back more than I always do for everyone else.”
Kasumi gulped. “Alright Ampharos, return.” Kasumi took out her next Pokeball.
“Alright, Ninetales, hit with a Flamethrower,” Kasumi ordered as her fox was still taking shape. As soon it was out, it let loose a burst of fire that nailed Kadabra dead on.
“Teleport, followed immediately by Psychic.”
(Ah crap).
Ninetails was instantly knocked out. “Return. Okay, now it’s your turn, Hippowdon!” Kasumi shouted, trying to restore a small amount of self confidence in herself. The large hippo appeared, and a sandstorm was whipped up around it. The granules instantly bit into Kadabra.
“Now take it out with Earthquake!” Kasumi ordered.
“Disable.”
Just as the ground was beginning to shake , Hippowdon was wrapped in a pale blue light, and its attack halted.
“Confusion.”
Again Kasumi had no choice but to recall her Pokemon.
“I thought you said that thing was your weakest!” she complained as she took out her next Pokeball.
“It is far, far weaker than my others. But none of your Pokemon have been strong enough to match it, and I have experience working with Kadabra. But I can tell that you have potential. If anyone else had been your opponent, then I’m sure you’d have had a better chance. I'm at about the level of the headmaster,” Sabrina said in a fairly complimenting tone.
“I think this next one will be a perfect match...right, Ditto?”
The small pink blob immediately changed into a perfect copy of Sabrina’s Pokemon.
“Now Ditto, Psycho Cut!”
Before Sabrina could issue a counter command, the glowing blades of energy hit her Kadabra, knocking it off its feet.
“Now, before he’s got a chance to recover, nail’im with a Shadow Ball!”
The dark orb hit Kadabra in the chest, staggering it.
“Now Future Sight,” Kasumi ordered. Ditto glowed for a few brief seconds, right before it was hit by a Shadow Ball attack from the original Kadabra.
“That was a nice try,” Sabrina said, trying to encourage Kasumi.
“Yeah, thanks...”
( I know there’s no real chance of him winning, but I’d rather not have to use my last resort). “Hitmontop! Triple Kick!” Kasumi ordered, but before the Pokemon even got a chance to so much as stand on its head, it was unconscious.
(Alright, I was really hoping that I wouldn’t have to use him, ever since he evolved, but I have no other choice).
“Tyranitar, finish her off!” Kasumi shouted. The huge dragon-like Pokemon let out a tremendous roar as a new sandstorm started up. Several people who had already finished their battles or were waiting for their own gathered around.
“Kadabra, Miracle Eye.”
Right away, Tyranitar charged at Kadabra, smashing into it and sending it flying.
“Tyranitar, use Hyper Beam!”
But rather than obey, the massive Pokemon grabbed hold of Kadabra and threw it back into the ground hard.
“Use Psywave.”
The blast hit Tyranitar right in the gut, blowing it back a few feet. “Using a Pokemon that you can’t control is not a very good idea.”
(Yeah, I know, but it’s not like I had any other choice! But he still listens every now and then...I hope this works).
“Confusion.”
The blast hit its target. “Tyranitar, use Payback!”
Tyranitar glowed darkly for a few seconds before smashing Kadabra, and just as its attack made contact, an orb of psychic energy hit Kadabra from behind.
“Your Ditto’s Future Sight's timing was perfect, and the constant damage from the sandstorm added up quite nicely,” Sabrina said as she recalled her Pokemon. A few seconds later, Tyranitar fell to the ground, causing the ground to shake and the sandstorm to end.
(Looks like that last move of hers did more damage than I thought...it was strong enough after all).
“Wow, that was cool!” one of the people standing around said.
“Absolutely amazing!” another voice called out.
“That was very good. I’m impressed that you were able to do so well against Sabrina. It's not everyone who can stalemate one of her Pokemon,” Lance congratulated Kasumi. “Tell you what, I’ll let you decide which homeroom you get.”
Kasumi answered without even thinking, “I want to be in the same class as Sakura.” She pointed to her new friend, who was sitting under a tree napping.
“Okay. Why don’t you go join her for now, while we make the arrangements? And feel free to explore the school. There won't be any classes today,” Lance said as he wrote some stuff on a form.
“That really was impressive...no student has ever KO'd one of Sabrina's, even if it did end with her Pokemon being KO'd as well,” Lance muttered as Kasumi walked over to Sakura.
Kasumi gently shook Sakura’s shoulder. She opened her eyes, yawning slightly. “Oh, Kasumi. Sorry I missed your battle, but I just couldn’t stay awake.” She wiped her eyes, yawning again.
“So who did you have to go up against?” Sakura asked as she stood up, brushing out a few wrinkles of the fabric of her kimono.
“Well, I had to fight Sabrina.”
Sakura’s eyes went wide. “Oh my, that’s too bad! I hope you didn’t get put into one of the slow classes just for that.”
Kasumi grinned ear to ear. “Actually, I beat her….but my whole team was wiped out. How about you?”
Sakura reached into her kimono, pulling out a small case with a Pokeball on top. “I won without losing a single Pokemon. My opponent was Crasher Wake,” she said, pointing to a large man wearing a mask. “He uses nothing but water types, so it was pretty easy for me.” Sakura put the case away.
After a small amount of talking about the battles, they discussed their homeroom teacher. “We’ve got Erika. She’s my personal role model: a grass type specialist, a traditional beauty, and she managed to overcome narcolepsy!” Sakura said in an admiring tone.
“Wait, are you narcoleptic?” Kasumi asked.
“Yes, but it’s not very severe...plus I’ve got medicine that helps me have a more normal sleep pattern, usually. Anyways, Erika used to be way worse than I was.”
“Well what do you say we go to the infirmary and drop off my team, then check out the rest of the school?”
Sakura nodded. After a few minutes of searching, they found the infirmary. Kasumi dropped off her team. Sakura also left half her team--even though none had been knocked out, she'd had to switch a few in battle to keep them from being beaten before she won. Crasher Wake may have been at a severe disadvantage, but he was still a teacher here for a reason, and hadn't gone down without a good fight. Before they could leave, Nurse Joy stopped Kasumi.
“I saw the battle you had. I really think you should be more careful.”
Kasumi nodded. (It’s not like I was trying to lose...)
“Well, let's look around. There’s no classes for the first day. They’ll be testing everyone for the next few hours,” Kasumi said as they walked out of the nurses’ office.
“Man, I still can’t believe I actually beat her!” Kasumi said, looking at the ceiling. Just then, there was a loud crash, and Kasumi was knocked down. She stood back up and saw a girl with messy black hair and a pair of glasses resting on top of her head. Sitting on the ground were dozens of pages of paper, spread out on the ground. She was frantically gathering them up.
“Kasumi, you should watch where you're going,” Sakura said, bending over to help. Kasumi offered her hand to the girl.
“Sorry about bumping into you like that,” she apologized. The girl took her hand, and as soon as she was up, she freaked out.
“Where’d my glasses go?”
She dropped to her knees, searching around. “Umm, they're on top of your head,” Sakura said. The girl stood back up and pulled them into place.
“Thanks.” She stopped and looked closely at Kasumi. “Hmm. Would you mind modeling for me some time or another? I’d be willing to pay.”
Kasumi wasn’t quite sure what to say, but before she could think of an answer, the girl grabbed up all the papers that she could find. “Actually, we’ll have to discuss it later. I’m really close to missing my deadline.”
As soon as she had picked up the last pages, she tucked them under her arm and ran off.
“Well that was strange...don’t you think so, Sakura?” There was no answer.
“Sakura?” Still no answer. Kasumi looked at Sakura, who was standing perfectly still with her eyes closed.
(Is she asleep?) Kasumi reached out and gently tapped Sakura’s shoulder.
“Oh sorry...I fell asleep, didn’t I…” Her words trailed off as she yawned.
“So who was that girl that you ran into?” she asked. Kasumi shook her head.
“I don’t know. She just asked if I wanted to model for her, and then ran off.”
Sakura bent over and picked up a piece of paper that was still on the ground. “Oh, look at this. She must have missed it,” she said, handing the sheet to Kasumi. On it was a very detailed drawing of Motoko from Love Hina with her arms draped around Shinobu, and just below them was a title: "Young Love."
“Oh, I know who she was now! Her name’s Yumiko. She does a lot of manga parodies. Mostly porn, though . I’ve also heard that she’s a top trainer, but because she spends most of her time doing manga, her grades suck and she’s been held back a year.”
Kasumi looked at the page for a few seconds. “Do you think we should try and find her to return this?” Kasumi asked. There was no reply.
“Wake up.” Kasumi gently shook Sakura.
“Oh, did I fall asleep again?”
Kasumi nodded. “Do you think we should try and find her?” she asked again.
“Yeah, let’s ask around as to where she might be.”
The two of them went to the first room that they saw, but no one there knew where she could be. They kept going from class to class asking, but no one had a clue.
“This school is huge. I can’t believe how hard it is to find her,” Kasumi said as she walked up to a soda machine. Before she could drop in a single coin, she heard Sakura say something, but she couldn’t quite make it out, so she turned around and immediately saw what it was. There was smoke seeping out from under a door.
“Kasumi, do you think anyone’s in danger?”
Kasumi reached out, pressing the back of her hand against the door. It wasn’t hot at all. “Well, I guess there’s no fire...but still.”
She knocked, and a few seconds later the door opened. Standing in the doorway was a girl with long black hair wit a few streaks of red. She was wearing a hugely elaborate outfit decorated with black roses and ribbons, but the thing about her that stood out most was that her eyes were completely black.
“How my I help you?” she asked.
“We’re looking for Yumiko, and we‘d also like to know about that smoke,” Sakura said, completely ignoring the girl's eyes. The girl seemed to notice Kasumi’s odd look.
“They're just contacts. And as for the smoke, that’s just, umm…incense. Yes, just incense! And, no we haven’t seen that weirdo all day. Why don’t you check out behind the storage shed?”
Just then, a voice from inside the room said, “Hey Lolita, you gotta see what Spiritomb's doing. Dude is so totally stoned, just from the fumes!”
Lolita blinked a couple of times before slamming the door. “You fucking idiots! How many times do I have to tell you, keep quite about that stuff!” They could hear her shouting.
“...Do you think we should report them?” Sakura asked as more smoke leaked out from under the door.
“Given that they've apparently never heard of a rolled up towel, I’m sure they’ll get caught on their own,” Kasumi said, walking back over to the soda machine. She got a lemonade and drank it in just a few gulps before tossing it into a trash can.
“Hey, I thought you forgot all your money at home,” Sakura said.
“I found some change laying around.”
“Where?”
Kasumi sighed. “Are you just going to stand around pointing out plot holes, or are you going to help look for Yumiko?”
Sakura nodded.
“Okay.”
The two of them wandered around until they found an exit and went back outside.
“Now then, where’s the storage shed at?” Kasumi wondered out loud as she walked forward. She looked back and saw that Sakura had fallen asleep again. She shook her.
“Oh sorry...I just couldn’t help it,” she said, rubbing her eyes.
“It’s alright,” Kasumi said, looking around, trying to figure out where the storage shed might be. (How in the world did she mange to get into Poke High? I mean, she keeps sleeping all the time. Guess she must be great in battles...or she‘d have to be smart, too. I only got in here because I’m a good fighter).
Just as Kasumi thought that, she saw what could be the shed. Yumiko came up to her.
“Hey, when we ran into each other, did you find any paper on the ground that I might have left behind?” she asked.
“Yeah. We’ve been looking all over for you to give it back,” Kasumi said, handing the cover sheet over to Yumiko.
“Thanks. My readers would be pissed if I missed an update just because I lost a page. After all, it’s been a while since I put out the last issue.” She put the sheet on top of a pile of other pages. “Well, see you around, got to go.” She ran off.
“Hey, you girls!” someone yelled from a distance. Kasumi and Sakura both turned around and saw that a guy with a baseball hat on was walking toward them. Right beside him was a taller guy with short black hair. The look on his face was even colder than Sabrina’s, like he had no emotion at all.
“Hey, you're that girl that beat Sabrina's Pokemon, right?” the one in the cap asked. Kasumi nodded.
“Well this here’s Kai, top student in the school. Even he ain’t done that.”
Kai looked at Kasumi in a way that made her blood run cold. “You got lucky. There’s no way someone as weak looking as you could have beaten her through skill!” He turned around.
“Come on Koji. These two aren’t worth wasting our time talking to.”
Koji, the one in the cap, nodded. “Yeah, you're right, Kai. These two don’t look like they should be in this school.”
Sakura dashed out in front of them faster than Kasumi thought she’d be able to move in her outfit. “You really shouldn’t judge someone by the way they look! I’ll battle you, and if I win, then you take back what you said!”
Kai stood there thinking for a few seconds. “Koji, take her on. I don’t feel like wasting the time.”
Koji grabbed a Pokeball. “Fine. I’ll show ya Kai is always right, and that ya got no place here! The battle will be one on one,” he suggested. Sakura agreed.
“Let’s win this fast, Nidoking!” The massive pokemon glared at Sakura, who simply reached into her kimono and pulled out the case, flicking it open and revealing that all of her Pokeballs were Luxury Balls.
(Wow, those things cost a lot...she must have a lot of money), Kasumi thought as Sakura pulled one of them out, pressing the button in the center, causing it to grow to full size.
“Let prove to them that you should never judge by looks, Bellossom.”
The tiny flower Pokemon came out, twirling around. A bell-like sound filled the air. “Bellossom, start off with a Sunny Day.”
The air began to shimmer from the sudden increase in sunlight.
“Nidoking, use Curse to get stronger, then hit it with a Double-Edge.”
Just as the massive Pokemon was about to strike, Sakura said, “Bellossom, dodge it, then use Grass Knot!”
Nidoking’s attack smashed into the ground, while Bellossom gracefully danced out of the way. A set of vines shot out from under its leafy skirt, grabbing hold of Nidoking’s ankle. Then it yanked, pulling the heavy creature’s foot out from under it.
As soon as it was on its back, Sakura commanded, “Bellossom, SolarBeam.”
Bellossom jumped up into the air, and a beam of pure sunlight shot out from its mouth, smashing the Nidoking into the ground just as it was standing up.
“Now do you think I’m weak?” Sakura asked as her Pokemon landed, twirling around, singing happily.
“Heh, just because you got in a few decent hits don’t mean ya won,” Koji said smugly. “Nidoking, Rest.”
Koji’s Nidoking sat back down and closed its eyes.
“I wouldn’t mind taking a nap right now myself...but it’s never a good idea to sleep during a match,” she said, yawning.
“Just 'cause he’s asleep don’t mean he can’t fight,” Koji laughed. “Use Snore!”
Nidoking let out a deep rumbling snore. Bellossom covered its ears, squeaking in pain.
“Bellossom, shake it off and use Magical Leaf.”
Several leaves shot off of Bellossom’s skirt, smacking into Nidoking, which stirred a little.
“Hah, that attack was as worthless as your Pokemon!” Koji snorted.
“Don’t you remember what I said before? Bellossom, wrap this up with one last SolarBeam.”
Bellossom’s entire body glowed for a few seconds before it jumped straight up, firing its attack directly down. Nidoking was actually driven a few feet into the ground by the force of the attack.
“It seems that I may have underestimated you, at the very least,” Kai said, walking away. Koji recalled his Nidoking.
“Ahhh, if Kai says you’re alright, then I guess it’s true,” he said grudgingly as he walked away. He turned back and looked at Kasumi. “But you still just got lucky.”
Sakura stuck her tongue out as Koji ran after Kai, calling to him to slow down.
“I can’t stand jerks like those guys. They didn‘t even give a proper apology,” Sakura said, recalling her Bellossom. She then put her case away.
“I bet our Pokemon are all better by now,” Sakura said, stretching and yawning again.
“That was great! You’re awesome!” Kasumi complimented her. (I didn’t think she’d be anywhere near that good, either). But Kasumi decided to keep her thought to herself.
“It was nothing special,” Sakura said, yawning again. A few seconds later, her eyes were closed.
(She fell asleep again). Kasumi woke her up, and they started off to the infirmary.
Neither one of them saw the blonde girl with a pair of dark sunglasses suddenly land with a blue Gardevoir right by her side. “So what do you think, Gardevoir?” she asked.
(The one that just fought Koji is very skilled. Same goes for the other girl. Kai is simply too conceited to recognize anyone who could do something he can’t), Gardevoir said directly to her trainer.
“Hmm. There are quite a few good new students. I hope that one of them can make my last year more interesting.”
(I hope for the same thing, Mistress Angelique).
Okay I hope this was good I know that some of the jokes were pretty bad but I have a bad sense of humor incidentally Sabrina did throw the match but Kasumi did do better than anyone else who went up her that day.
