Behind the façade of quick-witted sentences and sharp eyes hooded with intelligence and control, there was just a boy. He was a brilliant boy, in more ways than one, and yet he was suspected of being behind a number of evil acts.
Raito was so sure that he was not Kira. Everyone was so sure, except L, and that was the only reason for it to be there. The doubt. The tiny flicker of hesitation, the miniscule sliver of uncertainty that tickled the underside of his brain until he nearly went mad. Without that distrust in himself, he could never be so afraid.
Being sure was not enough.
He had to know.
And he did not know it. In fact, he’d analyzed the situation numerous times over and decided that, were he L, he would have come to the same conclusion.
Yagami Raito is Kira.
A verdict so ridiculous that Raito felt like laughing in L’s face or punching him in it, every time he heard the detective say it. A statement so wrong, and yet so very possible, that it made Raito’s eyes sting with hate.
Yagami Raito is Kira.
His first reaction, always, was denial. Because in the end, he was just so sure. He had no recollection of killing people, in any fashion, and would indeed not know how to murder in such a way, even if he’d wanted to. Which he didn’t.
He hated criminals. He did, but he knew the difference between right and wrong. He had a sense of morality, decency. That was why he planned to become a detective, to rid the world of such people, and he would never become one. It was misguided at best, and hypocritical and worst, and Raito like to think that he was better than that. Above it.
In fact, sometimes a sense of righteousness so great gripped him and he loathed L. He abhorred the man so entirely that it filled up his entire being, just for suggesting that he might be such a person. Because he Yagami Raito and he was for justice, and against evil, and he was better than that, he was above it. And L was a damn fool if he could even consider otherwise!
And yet…
He did not know. There was a difference between being sure and knowing. He could not say he was not Kira, because the only thing that said otherwise was the fact that he hadn’t killed his father. It was a flimsy explanation at best. There was no evidence that he was not Kira, L believed he was Kira, and no one knew the truth. Not even Raito, who surely could rely on his own memory?
Certainly his own mind would not forsake him?
But no, there were gasps in that logic as well as his memory. Times that he’d lost an entire hour of his day sitting at his desk doing apparently nothing, times that he could remember doing something but not way, a forest he remembered walking in a out of but not what he’d done in there –
Yagami Raito is Kira.
Again, those words emanate in his mind like an echo, in L’s accusatory baritone that seemed so sure of his guilt. So definite in his claim, so brashly asserting that Raito is almost undoubtedly, in his mind, an immature sociopathic mass murderer. He’d looked him into the eyes, and said he thought he was the kind of person capable of committing such a crime, and all Raito could do was deny it, not even sure of it himself.
Every day the chain reminded him of his lack of omniscience. The clank, click, clank was as critical and cruel as L’s voice.
He saw the task force members see the chain, and they were reminded too. The chain said it all; Raito might be Kira. Everyone thought about it, and even the mock execution had not completely convinced his father. They all were apprehensive of him –oh, they wanted to believe it, sure –but then again, it was L, and L was the best detective in the world.
They didn’t want the Chief’s son to be Kira, the man from whom they hid their names in fear. But they didn’t know.
It seemed as though the answer was in his mind, somewhere, but remained covered, protected, under an invisible fog. And for as long as it continued to be ambiguous, Raito would continue to suffer his torturous ignorance.
Yagami Raito is Kira.
Behind the façade of quick-witted sentences and sharp eyes hooded with intelligence and control, there was just a boy. A boy who, just maybe, was a monster.
Or at least, according to L, had the potential to be.

Okay, so, let’s see…this will be as in character as humanly possible. I’m trying to go down the road of the dark thoughts that memory-less Raito might think during his chain-to-L period. I mean, seriously, an innocent person thinking he might be a murder is almost psychological torture is one considers the constant fear of punishment for something they don’t even remember doing.
This will not be a ‘Hey, we’re chained together, so let’s screw’ story. I love ‘em as much as the next girl, but this isn’t one of them. Sorry. Like it says in the summary, this is focusing on the development of L and Raito both. I cannot say right now whether this will be AU or not.
This will be LxRaito, and not RaitoxL. I’m not going to make Raito a girlie uke or anything, that’s just how I see them.
The chapters will be longer, this is just an introduction, and I wanted to get it out there. Please, please tell me what you think. I love constructive criticism too.
