A tall young woman walked down the street of the little mountain village, heading to the local market. It was late in the season but she hoped to find one more batch of strawberries so she could bake some shortcake for her little friend at home. She was a tall woman with a pretty face and hair that hung down in long raven coloured tresses that recalled the “midnight waterfall” so beloved of the poets. She had large piercing Cerulean blue eyes that were like deep pools, and which made many who looked into them wish to drown themselves in them for the rest of their lives. She was wearing a stylish dress of a plain design, and a warm cloak. It was plain enough, but it fit her well, and looked very pretty and feminine. As she walked along she was planning whether or not they could get in a ski trip later in the winter to go to some places nearby that had magical items which could only be collected in winter.
I enter the town wearing my usual outfit of a leather thong bikini, knee high boots, garter belt on my right thigh, spiked shoulder guards, a duel cape, mid upper arm gloves, and my trademark ruby and gold tiara. I decide to stop and see if I could get some food and drink at the tavern when I bump into another woman. I stumble and cut myself without realizing it.
“Oh! Pardon me...” said the first girl, stepping aside to let the bizarre woman past. She couldn’t help but feel that there was something familiar about her, but she wasn't sure she wanted to know...
“Humph!” I declare as I get up. It is then that I notice the blood on my hand. I faint…
“Oh my! Wh-what happened?” the other woman said in fear. "Miss, uh, Miss? Are you alright?" she said, trying to revive the fallen woman.
I come to and see the blood again. Even though it is very little in amount I faint, again…
Totally at a loss, the young woman called for help. A couple of men approached and asked what was wrong. "I-I don't know, she bumped in to me then fell down and won't wake up, oh my!!!" she said.
I come to once again. This time I manage to avoid looking at my hand. I say “It’s the blood. Get it off of me, please.”
“What? Uh, the blood???” said the young woman, noticing the small cut for the first time. She sighed as she fished around and found a cloth from somewhere. She then wiped the offending red streak off. “P-pardon me Miss, but, who are you?” she asked, as the men walked away.
I reply indignantly “I am the fearsome and powerful sorceress Naga the White Serpent. I am the one known as Lina Inverse's greatest and most powerful rival!”
The young woman looked perplexed and asked "WH-who...? " Then her eyes opened in shock. "M-Mother?" she asked quietly.
I give her a deadpan look and say in a slightly dangerous voice “What are you talking about? I am no ones mother, how dare you.”
The young woman stared then spoke. "The mirror, the Shadow Projection mirror...” Suddenly she reached out and took the other woman’s face in her hands, gently but insistently turning it so she could see it more clearly. She let go with a gasp. “It IS you! The one I'm copied from! My Mother! Or, at least, my mother image...”
I look at you and say “No, it can't be…”
I slowly remove your cloak and look at your face. I get red with anger and fear “Get back! I cry as I step back away from you.
The women sank to her knees and plead "Don't hurt me!" Her fear was obvious.
In fear from the shock I say “Don't hurt me, please; I am too beautiful to die.”
The young woman picked up on the fear. “B-but you are the strong and beautiful one, how can you be afraid of me, Majesty?” she asked, addressing Naga by her title, since “Mother” seemed to upset her...
Being called “Majesty” makes me faint again as I scream “NOOOOOOOOOOO”
The young woman shook Naga awake again and fearfully asked “I-I'm so sorry, what did I do wrong?”
I snap “Don't you ever call me that again!”
“WH-what? Majesty, what shouldn't I call you?” was the timid response.
“That, that “Majesty” crap! I am no queen or princess!” I yell at her.
“Huh? But aren't you...?” she asked.
“I am an evil sorceress!” I declare loudly.
“Oh? Oh! Odd, I remember all about you up to the time I was made, and then we went our own ways. Um, when did you become evil?” asked the perplexed clone woman.
“I have always been evil.” I harrumph. I mean really, get a clue, lady…
“No you haven't, you haven’t. I know you, remember? You are not evil. Oh, I know you are trying to look evil, to fool everyone, is that what you meant?" asked the young woman. “But really, you are such a nice person inside, I know, remember? Why? Why do you want to make people think you are a bad girl?”
I look around and see a crowd gathering. I grab the woman’s hand and cast a “Ray-wing” spell, then fly us to an empty field. “What are you doing? Are you trying to ruin my reputation?” I cry to this other, um, me...
Her eyes opened wide with puzzlement "Reputation? You… oh my, oh my, you really think people think you are evil? Mommy, I’m sorry, but I get things said to me that are meant for you all the time, because of how I look! Mother! You are a fearsome enough sorceress, but you are also a bit of a laughing stock! Why do you think you are evil?" she asked, totally confused.”
I sputter. “WHAT?”
“Well? Don't you know? Some people like Lina better than you and they make fun of you. It hurts, mother, both me and my dear copy Lina, we hurt for you, you are such a nice person inside, and we don't understand why you do it. I feel your pain because your own mother was killed, but I'm not you, I'm your opposite, I don't really understand. I wish that I did..." said the copy girl.
I don’t understand why her words get to me, but I start to cry. I feel the pain for the loss of mommy, and for the first time after all these year I cannot hold back the tears.
“M-mother? Mother? What's wrong? Mother!" said the copy girl, feeling very timid again. She gingerly put her hand on Naga’s shoulder, not knowing how to comfort the grieving woman.
I cried out from the pain in my soul “MOMMY! I AM SO SORRY I DID NOT SAVE YOU! PLEASE FORGIVE ME!”
Not knowing what else to do the copy gave her a big hug and cried as well. She said "Mommy, I didn't mean to upset you by mentioning this, I didn't. I-I'm sorry, don't cry please, mommy, don't cry..."
The tears dry up as time goes by, but I have an emotional breakdown to the point where I cannot talk at all.
Still afraid, both of, and for, Naga, copy Naga asked timidly "W-would you like to come home with me and rest?"
I nod “Yes.”
The copy put her arm around Naga, and lead her off over the fields, towards her house.
I am shaking lightly, unable to stop.
"Are, are you cold mommy? You are shaking so much..." asked the copy woman.
I shake my head “No.”
"C-can I do anything? Anything at all?" she asked.
I shrug, unsure myself.
The copy Naga didn't know what else to do, so she led Naga on, her head down, trying to think. What was she going to do with this woman? And what would dear copy Lina think?
I follow you. As we walk I try to say I am sorry for overreacting, but I cannot speak.
After several worried glances at you, the copy girl says, softly “I-I must have hurt you with what I said. I am so sorry...”
I squat down at a patch of dirt and write what I was trying to say but can’t, because of my voice being gone.
The copy read what was written, and started to cry softly. "M-mommy, I know I'm not your child by the usual way, but I want you to know, I've loved you from my creation onward, even if it was by bad magic. I've never had the chance to say it before. I don't know how you feel about me, maybe you still hate me like you did when I was made, but I still love you..."
I write that maybe I can grow to love her like my child by the time I am better…
The copy girl gave her a smile. “Okay, mommy.” she said. She took her hand and led her on towards home.
I follow with a tear in my eye.
After a short walk in silence we come to a little house. It is beginning to get towards evening, still plenty of daylight, but it feels like the day is getting old. In other words, it'll soon be supper time.
My stomach growls loudly…
“Okay, here we are..." said the copy. She opened the door and called out "Lina?" There was no answer. "Oh, that's right; she was going to go for a walk in the woods to gather herbs and mushrooms. Well, she'll be back later. Please, sit here mommy, and I'll get up some tea to start, and then get supper going."
I nod, sit down, and look around.
It's a simple enough place really. The girls live comfortable, but obviously quietly. But then, they are the opposite personalities to Naga and Lina. The copy bustled around and quickly, got the fire up, then started the kettle heating. She next went to the pantry to get the tea. "Would you like black, green, or an herbal tea?" she asks.
I mouth the words “herbal tea”, and get mad at myself.
Copy Naga nodded and turned to get some mint. She didn’t see Naga’s anger.
I slam my hand down on the arm of the chair, almost breaking it in anger at my loss of voice.
Copy Naga gave a start and turned around fast. "Mother? Are you hurt? What's wrong?"
I mouth I can’t talk and it is making me so mad. I have a very pissed off look on my face…
Copy Naga came and said "Mommy, please don't be mad." She looked at Naga with concern. Suddenly she slapped her head. "Oh I’m so stupid not to see you were so hurt. I thought it was a momentary thing. Here, let me see, I do sort of remember your white magic training, maybe I can help." She put her hand gently on Naga’s throat and muttered a spell. "Healing!" she commanded.
Of course nothing happened…
“Oh no, wait, I’ve not done this before like this, I forgot something.” she said, nervously, and then she repeated the spell. This time white light and soothing warmth washed over Naga’s neck, inside and out.
I try to talk and find that I can! “I am so relieved, thank you so much!”
The copy girl smiled back and said "I'm glad you are better, I'm sorry I didn't think of this sooner."
I said “I could not do it myself because I couldn't speak, and I am so sorry about the chair.”
"Mommy, the chair's okay, now, let me get the tea?" said Copy Naga.
“Ok, my daughter.” I replied, not even thinking about the words until they were said. Suddenly, I realize what I just said, and, even better, that it was alright!
Copy gave a little gasp and suddenly hugged Naga. There were some tears in her eyes. “Daughter? Oh I’m so happy…” she beamed.
I smile a warm smile, the likes of which have not graced my face in a long time, a true smile of joy, not a fake smile like all the other smiles I have been smiling lately. No, this is a real smile!
Shadow Naga couldn't help but smile back when she saw Naga was happy. She felt relieved, and, like any daughter, she wanted to make a good impression on her mother. "Okay, mommy, well, let's have our tea?"
“Yes sweetie, lets, I could use some good tea.” I said.
They sat at the table in a brief silence. As they sipped their tea they both thought about the strangeness of the days' events. Shadow Naga spoke. “Mommy, I was wondering, do you, uh, ever go back home? To see Amelia and daddy I mean?”
I look down in sadness. “No sweetie, I have never had the courage to go back home after… what happened that night…” Tears start to roll down my face again.
Shadow Naga gave Naga a hug. "Please don't cry mommy. I was really just wondering if you had been home after I was made. Well, and part of me wanted to know if Amelia and daddy knew about me. But I was just curious, I didn't want to make you sad again..."
I am silent for a minute, then I say “No sweetie. It is ok I understand why you asked and trust me, I miss Amelia and daddy too. One of these days I will return home and see them, but not just yet. So where is Lina? I’m surprised that you two didn’t go your separate ways like the real Lina and I did?”
The Copy girl replied “No, no, we didn't. She's out in the woods getting some plants and things. We make a bit of money selling magical herbs, and we also both love mushrooms and it's the season right now for them. And it's even the start of berry season. If she finds some I can make up for the strawberries I didn't get today in town by making a nice berry pie! Oh, it'll be so yummy with the berries and the whipped cream and all! Of course, my Lina makes the best, melt in your mouth pie crust, so she'll make that. Oh, it'll be such a labor of love for us! It will be wonderful!" Shadow Naga was obviously enthusiastic, to the point where she had stars in her eyes. But then, she was very domestic...
I avoid gagging and smile. “Wow, sounds very good sweetie. I am glad it didn't end for you two like it did for me but that is a story for later. If you don't mind can we go see your Lina? I would like to say hello. Um, also, I will want to be anonymous until we talk, so do you have a cloak I may use?” I ask, as I sip my tea in the way a Princess should.
“Um, sure…” said copy Naga. “But, why? I'm sure she'd be happy to see you, in fact, I know she would. But we can go see her. I know the woods quite well, so while I don't know where she is exactly, I know we will find her.” Shadow Naga rummaged in a drawer and held up a garment and said “Here is one of my cloaks. I think it'll fit...”
I put it on, and it fits perfectly. “Sweetie did you forget we are the same in every way?” I finish my tea and get myself fixed up before we leave. “Now remember sweetie, keep who I am a secret until I let her know who I am, alright? He, he, she will do the introduction for you. I know Lina very well. So are you ready to go?” I flip up the hood to hide my face.
Shadow Naga lead the way. “Uh, you do remember, this isn't your Lina, right? We have the opposite personalities to the two of you, so, uh, just remember to take your Lina and reverse her to understand my Lina okay?” she said with a slight sweat drop. They wandered into the woods. “Lina!” called Shadow Naga. There was no reply. “Okay, let's try the lake...” she said, leading the way.
“Yes, I know, sweetie, I understand that very well.” I say, as I walk on, following your lead.
