Building Trust On Short Notice
Hi Everyone! This is Shiny-chan back in action! This is a story I’ve had in my head for a while now,
just bursting to come out! This is YAOI. You don’t like, don’t read. I do not own Fruits Basket,
Yuki, or Kyo. I just like to play with them.
On with the Story!!!
XD
Yuki woke up on a bright, sunny morning in May. Or, it would be better to say he sleepwalked on a
sunny morning in May. In a haze, he walked downstairs and inhaled the scent of omelettes, natto, and
miso soup that Tohru had made him for breakfast. He walked past it, barely registering the fact that
he had nearly fallen over the table. He sat at the table, eating the food woodenly, barely even
tasting it. He brought his dishes to the sink, still in his post-sleep daze, and went to put on his
school uniform. On his way up the stairs, he bumped into Kyo, who was coming down the stairs. He
nuzzled his head into Kyo’s shoulder, murmuring and falling asleep there. Kyo bristled and then
relaxed. He stood there for a minute. Relishing the feeling of Yuki’s silver hair, he petted his head
softly before pushing him off.
“Stupid Rat! Get the fuck off me!” Yuki woke with a start and smacked Kyo reflexively. He pushed
past Kyo and quickly dressed in his uniform, tying his tie as he ran out the door. He arrived at
school and went to the student council room and gathered up the papers he needed to fill out for the
annual school festival. When he got to classroom 2-d, he slid open the door and sat next to Tohru
and her friends.
“Well well well, if it isn’t Prince Yuki. You better be treating Tohru right.” Yuki sighed and began
to sort through the papers.
“I assure you, Uotani-san, that I treat Honda-san like a princess.”
“What, your princess?”
“No. I. . .” Hana stopped munching on her rice ball and gazed at Yuki openly.
“Sohma-san, I sense confusion coming from you today. There must be a decision you’ve been thinking
about for days.”
“Yeah, it’s about the festival this year. Since I’m student council president, everyone will expect
me to come up with something and I’m afraid I’ve drawn a blank.” He demurred. Hana looked anything
but convinced. Tohru tugged his hand and smiled up at him.
“Please don’t worry about it, Yuki-kun, we can always think up something together.” He smiled down
at her.
“Of course, you’re right Honda-san. The festival is a month away anyways. There is plenty of time to
come up with something.” He finished sorting the papers and placed them back in their folder. The
classroom began to fill with the students waiting for class to start. Kyo walked in and sat in his
assigned seat, right behind Yuki. Yuki could feel his eyes on the back of his neck, and for one he
couldn’t sense any animosity in it. How strange. The teacher, Mayuki-sensei, entered the classroom
and everyone rose.
“Siddown, all of you. Today we are going to take a quiz about what we learned last week concerning
photosynthesis, after that, I will be having private meetings with each of you to discuss your
futures.” She passed out a handful of papers and eyed the clock.
“Begin.” Pencils scratching the paper could be heard throughout the room as each student raced to
finish the pop quiz. Yuki rubbed his eraser in his hair, thinking about one of the answers. He put
and answer down and too his paper to Mayuki-sensei. She drew him aside.
“Hey, how’s everything going for you? That bastard Shigure still bugging you?” He shrugged.
“He annoys you if he breathes, Mayuki-sensei. I just ignore him. Everything’s going good I guess.
Have you heard from mother since that weird conference?” She tilted her head.
“No. Did she say anything to you?”
“Ah. No. I haven’t spoken with her since then.” She looked at him sympathetically.
“Ok then Yuki, I’m glad we had this chat. You may sit back at your desk.” Yuki started to go back
before he turned around and asked a question.
“By the way, I had meant to ask how things are going for you and Hatori. Are you two still together?”
“Noneya bizness kid, just go sit down!” He did so, while fighting the smile that wanted to break out
when he saw her blush.
Finally class was over and he stared out the window before grabbing his bag and walking home alone.
It was such a nice day, that Yuki decided he needed to work on his secret base. He changed his
clothes and walked out into the back of the Sohma property, holding his equipment in his hands. He
reached his base and he was surprised to find Kyo sitting on the rock next to his garden. He stood
up, holding his arms in front of him.
“Wait! Before you start yelling, I wanted to talk to you without fighting. Can we do this?” Yuki
walked over to him and glared in his face.
“Since when have you ever wanted to be civil?” Yuki asked coolly. Kyo ran his hands through his hair.
“I’m sorry Yuki, I never gave you a chance. I actually want to be civil with you because I’m tired of
fighting you.” Yuki crossed his arms.
“So why should I give you a chance? You never gave me one.” Kyo sighed.
“I’d understand if you didn’t give me a chance, but I would like to get to know the real Yuki before
I’m confined at graduation. It really isn’t fair that I’ve been treating you this way just because
you happen to be the rat. I’m sorry, I won’t bother you about this again.” Kyo turned around and
started to walk back to the house.
“Wait.” Kyo stopped.
“I’ll give you your chance Kyo, but the next time you compare me to the rat of legend, we will be
right where we started. Do we have a deal?” Kyo turned to Yuki with a warm smile on his face that
made his heart skip a beat.
“You got it! Thanks Yuki!” Kyo bounded off through the bushes, leaving Yuki to wonder just what he
was getting himself into.
