Prologue: Enmity
Author’s Notes: So I’m starting on a long Death Note story. This’ll be my first attempt at a multi-chaptered story so I'd really appreciate feedback.
That is all. Sit back and enjoy The Heart Never Lies!

You are even in enmity. You are both coldly driving ahead for yourselves alone. . . . I felt better. Yes, I sensed it like the sweat of relief when nausea passes away; I felt better. We were even after all, even in enmity. The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all.
Light remembered the moment when he first knew he absolutely hated L.
Light felt anger pump through his veins as he recalled the incident. The incident where Light had let his emotions control his actions and he had been duped by L in consequence for such foolishness. Light felt like snarling but kept his face in passive mask, Light wouldn’t let his emotions cause him to slip up ever again.
Light fumed about how L had tricked him, something Light was not fond of anyone doing, especially L, Kira’s rival. Light was quite proud of his genius and despised the moment of panic and confusion he had felt when the gothic L came up on the screen after Light had killed Lind L. Tailor, who he had believed to be L.
Light recalled the wave of terror, followed by shock when he discovered that it was all a ploy to reveal where Kira was located and that Light had fallen right into L’s trap. Light could still remember Ryuk’s echoing laugh and taunts in the back of his mind of how L had ‘gotten him’. Light had brushed the incident aside then, thinking he would kill L soon anyways so it didn’t matter if Kira was made a mockery one time. Light’s hate for L stayed steady as he continued to evade the police and eliminate criminals.
Then he’d met L in person.
Light’s hatred for ‘Ryuzaki’ had increased ten fold since then. Ryuzaki and Light were truly opposite ends of the same stick, they were both geniuses, but yet so different. There was Ryuzaki, who never went outside, kept his name a secret, had quirky ways, wore wrinkled clothes, had bags under his eyes, and had messed up raven locks sticking everywhere out of his head. The opposite of perfection, everything about him was flawed and Light hated Ryuzaki for this. Light was the straight A student and the perfect son, with immaculate clothes, hair that was always perfectly in place, attractive looks, and not to mention girls loved him. The image of perfection which he prided himself on.
The only characteristic that Ryuzaki and Light had in common besides their brilliant minds was their ability to lie well and do it often.
Both Ryuzaki and Light lied to get what they wanted. They lied about being friends. They lied about liking each other. They lied about themselves. Lies, lies, lies.
Light knew that the relationship between Ryuzaki and himself could be nothing but enmity. Other wise know as the equal hatred of each other, which was certainly true. Light knew that under Ryuzaki’s friendly demeanor that Ryuzaki hated Light. Ryuzaki as L knew that Light was Kira and wasn’t going to stop until he actually had the proof to get Light executed. And Light certainly hated Ryuzaki, there was no doubt about that.
Light remembered with a swell of pride when he had beaten Ryuzaki at tennis. Light had underestimated Ryuzaki at the beginning, seeing him as a weakling who probably couldn’t even hit the ball over the net. Light had been proven wrong, remembering the shock that had hit his system when the small yellow ball whizzed past his face with alarming speed. Ryuzaki always seemed to shock him, another factor about Ryuzaki that he despised. Light hate surprises and not knowing what was coming, it was harder to prepare that way. Light realized at that moment that he couldn’t underestimate the man anymore, as Kira or as Light, and prepared himself to play Ryuzaki as if he were playing a championship match with his life on the line.
Light recalled the moment of victory, basking in the glory of the moment he had recalled in his mind. Light knew he had been psychoanalyzed the entire game, but just then Light didn’t care. How could Ryuzaki accuse him of being Kira because he was competitive? Though it was suspicious, it would have been more so if Light had attempted to hide his competitiveness. Nevertheless, Light had won against Ryuzaki, Kira had beaten L. Needless to say Light was very pleased.
Light remembered all of his memories he’d ever experienced with Ryuzaki, how they’d fought for dominance in their ‘friendly banter’, always trying to defeat one another under the false pretense that they were friends. Everyone on the task force thought it was just ‘healthy competition’ between them, though Ryuzaki and Light knew better, the hatred between them was so intense that only they could sense it. After he’d sorted those memories out, Light moved on to the future, imagining L’s death. Light thought of how painful he would make it, all the while keeping the impassive bored look on his face, knowing he was being watched. Light did the same process every day, finding comfort in his mind, having nothing else to do but sit and wait.
Light was close to reaching his breaking point though. Light had been imprisoned by Ryuzaki for what felt like months, though he knew that in reality it hadn’t been that long, but it felt so when all he could do was think about how much he hated L while he felt Ryuzaki’s wide eyes upon him all the time.
Light readjusted his wrists and winced. Light would make L’s death even more painful if there were scars on his flawless wrists, which he could sense were now dripping small red rubies. Light was convinced Ryuzaki hated him for Light’s perfection and was trying to mar his image by making Light have permanent scars on his wrists.
It was about time though. Light just had to be patient.
Light pretended to stare at the wall in boredom, while in fact he had his eyes upon Ryuk, though Ryuzaki watching him would never be able to know that. Ryuk floated in the air, constantly annoying Light with his pleas for apples, often breaking Light out of his reverie. Light knew that if Ryuzaki would turn the cameras off for only ten seconds he’d use it well by telling Ryuk to shut the fuck up. Light studied Ryuk, who was curling up grotesquely from apple withdrawal, Light would have made disgusted face but knew Ryuzaki would psychoanalyze it somehow to prove something against him.
Light decided that he was truly brilliant, not that he didn’t already believe he was beforehand, but his plan had proved it. The plan he had concocted was flawless and wouldn’t fail. Light was going to relinquish his Death Note soon, and as a result would lose his memories. Ryuk would take the Death Note to someone suitable and they would continue Kira’s majestic work.
Light had it set up for the Death Note to eventually fall back in his hands of course. Ryuzaki would have to let him out of this cage eventually, Light was sure his father and the other task force members were pressing Ryuzaki for his release. Even though the Kira killings had stopped days ago, once they started back up again, Ryuzaki would have no choice but to release him.
Light, without Kira inside him, would be innocent or as close to innocent as he was before he picked up the Death Note. Light would believe in L’s own corrupted sense of justice, which involved men in white wigs and black robes making all the decisions, resulting in people being on death row for years and never receiving proper punishment. Light knew that his sense of justice was more righteous than L’s, but without his memories he wouldn’t feel that way.
Light with his new state of mind would want to help Ryuzaki with the case, and Ryuzaki of course wouldn’t object to this, probably wanting to keep an eye on him anyways. Light would help Ryuzaki find this new Kira, he knew that it wouldn’t be too difficult by the person he’d chose. Once they apprehended this new Kira the Death Note would be released to the task force. This was a sacrifice that had to be made, finally revealing his murder weapon, but then he would touch the Death Note and regain all his memories, once again returned to being the almighty Kira. The Death Note would prove his innocence and ensure that the Death Note wouldn’t be destroyed, as he had written two fakes rules in the book before handing it over to Ryuk to hold on to.
Light had already buried another Death Note in a remote location where no one would find it. Light would touch Misa with the paper he would tear out from the Death Note to keep his memories and send her to go fetch the other one while Light still worked with Ryuzaki, trying to apprehend the new Kira killings that would occur by Misa’s doing.
Then, L would die and all oppositions to Kira would be gone, Light could at last create he utopia with himself as God. Light took great comfort in these thoughts, in fact it was only these thoughts that caused him to be able to stand sitting in his cell with a passive mask on for any longer.
His plan was perfect. Light had psychoanalyzed the situation at least a thousand times to make sure that there was no flaw to his plan. Really, there was nothing that could go wrong.
"I release it," whispered Light, knowing he could contribute his words to craziness if L psychoanalyzed that as well. Light was sure he would.
“Eh? Alright Raito, if you’re sure,” Ryuk hyuked, flying through the wall and disappearing.
Oh, how Light was wrong.
