Once upon a time, Inui Sadaharu dreamt of becoming a detective. He figured that with his grades and the precision of his data collection and observational skills, not to mention his athleticism, it shouldn’t have been too hard to accomplish.
Looking back, Inui was a bit disturbed by this peculiar pipe dream of his. This hadn’t always been the case. It was only after the release of the hit manga Death Note that all of that had changed.
He’d recognized a lot of himself in the series’ protagonist after having read just a few volumes, which probably wasn’t a good thing, given the terms ‘serial killer’ and ‘psychopath’ that seemed to be part of said protagonist’s characterization.
He’d ended up forgoing his notes in fear that he would accidentally end up killing off his teams mates in his desire to become a Regular once more. It wasn’t quite on the scale as wanting to set one’s self up as the God of a new world. But still, it was human desire enough to make Inui pause and think.
He’d been even more freaked out when he had learnt of Yagami Raito’s middle school tennis inclinations. It actually made him shudder.
He still took notes for his in-class work. He hadn’t be as concerned about it as he had been with his tennis notes, given that if ever he had to write about people, chances were they were either already dead, entirely fictional, or he had no idea what they looked like. In the few cases that he did, he gave them code names, just to be safe.
It came as a great relief when Inui finally managed to convince his father to get him a PDA for his extracurricular note-taking.
There was only so much sacrifice he was willing to make.
