Chapter One- The Die is Cast

What Lies Beneath: Chapter One- The Die is Cast

A hand slowly rose up to scratch at it's owner's chin, while he pondered just what he should do next. He'd planned things out as well as could reasonably be expected, the rest would have to be chalked up to Fate. His opponent was pretty strong, there was no guarantee he'd survive the next move. But he wouldn't give them the satisfaction of giving up, he'd fight to the bitter end, regardless of the outcome. He reviewed his options one last time, and then put his plan into motion.

"My Panthress Warrior attacks your face-down card!"

This was no true Duel, with magic fueling life-like illusions of the monsters. No, it was just an ordinary game of Duel Monsters, between two people who'd faced each other quite a few times. Scott tapped his card to formally set his attack, and his opponent casually flipped their face-down monster card right-side up.

"Damn!"

It was a Girl-Eater Bug! When it was flipped, it'd destroy one face-up monster card, and Scott's Panthress Warrior was his only one. Grumbling, he sent it to the graveyard and placed a card face-down, then rapped the table to indicate he ended his turn. His opponent giggled at his discomfiture, and drew a card, beginning their turn. They didn't have a monster on the field either, as their Girl-Eater Bug was still destroyed from battle damage; but the path was clear for them to summon a monster and take the win.

"Any last words, Scott?"

"You haven't won yet, just make your move, Cinthia!"

And she did. With much flourish and aplomb, she placed a card on the field in front of her, revealing her newest monster, the one she'd been hinting at for the past week. Chaos Demon-Goddess! An overlooked card, but one that could be very dangerous in the right situation. A situation like this one. It started with no attack points at all, but for every monster card in the owner's graveyard, it gained strength. And with the way Scott and Cinthia had been trading blows for the past half hour, there were a lot! But just to be sure, she counted, and announced with glee that there were twenty-three monsters in her graveyard, which gave her creature more than enough power to take Scott's last 800 life points. Sure of her win, Cinthia had her creature attack, sure that that would be enough to wipe that confident smile off of Scott's face.

But it wasn't. He just slowly shook his head, and flipped one of his face down cards, Enchanted Javelin. It gave him life points equal to the attack points of an attacking monster, so basically, it cancelled her attack. Cinthia swore, earning an amused look from Scott.

"Really, such talk from a lady! What would Mom and Dad say?"

"They'd tell you to stop talking and take your turn!"

"Alright, then prepare to lose!"

"Fat chance! You don't have any monster with a high enough attack, and even if you did, you don't have a sacrifice to summon it!"

"You'll see, just watch and learn." With that, Scott began his turn. Drawing a card, he kept his face still, although he wanted to grin at the card he just drew. Maybe he could still win after all! He didn't take the opportunity to gloat, he just reviewed his options, remembering what his face-down cards were. This could possibly work after all! He first activated Giantess Trunade from his hand, to return all Magic and Trap cards to both players' hands, so Cinthia wouldn't have a surprise waiting for him. Judging by the look she sent, that was a good idea. Then he played his monster. Armsmistress Ben Kei. It seemed weak enough, and apparantly Cinthia forgot about what it could do, because she immediately mocked his choice.

"You chose that?! Why even bother playing a monster?"

"You'll see, dear sister. Now pay attention, this is where it gets good."

Scott started playing Magic cards from his hand, one after another. He'd been hanging onto them from nearly the beginning of the duel, waiting for Ben Kei to finally make her appearance. First was Divine Sword- Firebust Blade. Then Infernal-Breaking Flamberge - Baou, G-Spliced Sword Murasame Blade and Ria Blade. All four were Equip Spell Cards, and all four went on Ben Kei, powering her up to a noticeable 2900 attack points!

"So what, he's stronger than my Demon-Goddess, big deal! I still have 2100 life points, I'll get rid of her on my next turn!"

"Sorry, no can do. I win. You forget Ben Kei's ability."

With that, Scott had Ben Kei attack. And attack. And attack and attack and attack. The first attack destroyed the Chaos Demon-Goddess easily enough, the second took the last of Cinthia's life points, and the third through fifth were just because Scott felt like it. Scott began gathering up his cards, after telling Cinthia they had played a good game, she'd nearly won. She just grumbled, cursing that she'd forgotten Ben Kei's ability again, and Scott's habit of using underhanded tricks to win. She challenged Scott to another game, but he had to refuse, reminding Cinthia that he had to meet their parents in less than half an hour.

"Oh yeah, that's right, Dad said something about that at breakfast. And he never told you what it was for, right?"

"Yeah, he just said it was important, so make sure to be on time. Well, guess I better get going then. See you later, Sis! Make sure the house doesn't burn down again!"

Cinthia just growled angrily, her tail waving slightly behind her, the young Charamanda Pokekit irked that he wouldn't let her forget the one time she'd forgotten about the fire on the tip of her tail. She watched Scott leave a moment longer, then turned back to find something else to do until their parents came home. Without Scott around, she was the only one left, and it was boring!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott grabbed his bag and left, walking down the street at a slightly brisk pace. He still had time, but it was a bit of a walk to where he was headed, and better early than late. It was late morning, there were already a fair amount of people and pokegirls walking around town, taking care of errands or any of a hundred other reasons. He greeted the few that he recognized, but overall his trip was rather uneventful. And then he was there. The Pokecenter. He wasn't a Tamer, at least not yet, but he'd already been inside quite a few times. That's what happened when your mother was a NurseJoy and the center was constantly understaffed. He walked right in, and up to the desk, seeing his mom, Janelle, working at the counter. She was well within the average descriptions for most NurseJoys, ample bust and bright pink hair which was braided into a ponytaurtail that she had curled over her shoulder.

"Hi Mom!"

"You're a little early, your father won't be here for a few minutes yet. Why don't you have a seat for a little bit?"

"Sure. But first, are you sure you can't tell me what's going on?"

"Nope. Now shoo young man, looks like I have some work to do."

Sure enough, the door opened letting in a rather travelworn-looking Tamer. They made their way to the counter rather haphazardly, looking like they were in danger of pitching over on their face at any minute. Scott hastily moved to their side, in case they started to fall over. Years of growing up with a NurseJoy had that effect on you. But it wasn't needed, the Tamer finally reached the counter and seemed to hit their second wind, straightening up and giving Scott his first look at them.

They were obviously a human male, or possibly a very shabby Drag King although that was ridiculously unlikely. He stood just under 6', and looked a little on the skinny side. His dark brown hair was tousled and slightly ragged, like he'd cut it himself. He wore typical Tamers' garb, durable without being cumbersome, along with the addition of a threadbare travelling cloak and a rather large backpack. Scott saw that he seemed better now, and turned to go take a seat. Looking around, he couldn't see that many people or pokegirls in the center. There were a Tamer and his presumed Alpha talking in muted tones near the wall, a second NurseJoy apparently getting ready to take over for his mother, and then another odd figure.

He looked at them a while longer, unsure if they were a boy or a girl. They were wearing a baggy tan shirt and black pants, and their outfit was nondescript enough that it was hard to tell if they were just skinny or lanky, or any other real details. Even their hair was hidden under a poofy hat, and their eyes were covered by a pair of sunglasses. All in all, a very esoteric figure, but not one that was too out of place judging by the outfits that some pokegirls, and even some Tamers, wore. He watched them for a moment longer, then mentally shrugged and dug around in his bag for a moment to find something to occupy himself with while he waited for his mom's shift to be done.

His hand landed on a familiar box, which he pulled out before opening it. His deck box. Taking his cards out, he looked them over, slipping into that mindset so vital to a cardflopper, the deckbuilder. Debating between several substitutions, an alternate series of potential combos, and so on, he soon found himself quite embroiled in his silent musings. So introverted was he, that he didn't even notice the person standing in front of him until they gave him a slight rap on the head. Jerking his head back, he looked up to see the person with the shades glaring at him. He felt sure they were glaring, even if he couldn't see their eyes, he'd spend far too many games reading body language not to know irritation when he saw it.

"Um, can I help you?" His mind whirled, what in the world had he done to get their attention?

"I challenge you to a duel!" Holding out an elaborate deckbox, they took an aggressive stance directed right at Scott.

Scott was caught a little off-guard. A duel, right here and now? He glanced at the clock and saw his mom would be finishing up before too much longer. But he hadn't faced a new opponent in quite some time!

"Alright, I accept your challenge."

"Good, just don't cry when I beat you."

"Rather confident, aren't you? There's a table over there, are you ready?"

The two made their way to the table. Along the way, Scott saw his mom watching him with a curious expression. He showed her his deck box, and she nodded, although her expression didn't go away. He took a seat opposite his newfound opponent, and started shuffling his deck, while his opponent did the same. Once they were both done, they let each other cut the other's deck, and the duel was on!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott looked over his cards, frowning at what he saw. His opponent was a lot better than he had originally thought. Their first match had been a throwaway, he knew now that they'd just been toying with him, giving him the victory in order to see his deck. The second game had been another mismatch, they'd walked all over him. And now, the tiebreaker had started, and it looked like it'd be another loss for him. Unless he used that alternate strategy he thought of earlier...

"G-Spliced Dire Wolf, attack!"

Scott flinched visually as his opponent's newest beast destroyed his last creature, leaving him wide open for her second creature to attack. Which she did, her Drow Zee taking a large chunk out of his already bruised life points. His opponent didn't gloat, he was thankful for that much. They finished their turn with a face-down, and then he looked at his deck for a brief moment.

'This is probably my last draw, if I can't get rid of at least one of those two, I'm gone...' He reached his hand out, and drew his card. Waiting a moment before looking at it, he opened his eyes, and only barely held back his disappointment from showing. Nothing. He might as well give up, there wasn't anything he could do. Wait, there was his face-down card. It wouldn't win, but it'd buy him time!

"I activate Gravity Bondage!" He wasn't sure, but he thought he could see a flicker of annoyance cross his opponent's face. He placed another face-down, and ended his turn. Without a creature out, he felt naked and exposed, hopefully his trap card would buy him time, time enough to figure something out. His opponent didn't seem too worried, they knew that he couldn't attack them either. So they ended their turn without doing anything.

Scott drew his next card, and looked it over. At first glance, it seemed like a useless card, but he knew there was a use for it. That's why he had three of them in his deck, and now two were in his hand. Maybe this wasn't just hopeless stalling after all! He placed both cards face down, and ended his turn, again without a creature. His opponent couldn't help but mock him, saying that he'd never win by not playing a monster. He only smiled calmly and told them not to worry, he'd be playing one soon enough.

Their turn came, and they finally did something. They tributed both of their monsters for an even stronger beast, the Blue-Eyed White Dragoness. A very rare and very strong card, Scott couldn't help but worry that his plan wouldn't be good enough with a beshemoth like that on the field. They could tell he was getting nervous, and made a show of ending their turn. Scott drew his next card and tried to refocus, knowing he had to get his act together. They still couldn't attack yet, he just had to buy some more time! He looked at his newest draw, and decided that it'd make as good a start as anything. He placed his monster down eagerly, revealing the first step of his plan.

"Lyla, Lustsworn Sorceress, in attack mode!"

With that, his plans went into full motion. He used Lyla's special ability to turn her to defense mode, and destroyed his opponent's face-down magic or trap card. Then he activated two of his own face-downs, the two he played on his last turn. Lust Spiral. He was sure he saw his opponent react to that, they knew where he was going with this now. Not that this was all of his plan, however. With that, he ended his turn. Lyla's ability triggered, and he sent the top three cards from his library to the graveyard. That made his Lust Spirals trigger, making his opponent remove the top six cards of their deck from the game. They actually cursed at that.

He watched them take their turn, but they didn't do anything. Whether because they didn't want to, or actually couldn't, he didn't know. He was just intent on making his plan work. He drew his next card, and played it. Lumina, Lustsworn Summoner, to join Lyla on the field. With both of them on the field, as well as the two Lust Spirals, his opponent would be decked in short order. Not a very elegant victory, but it had a certain flair to it. He ended his turn, and sure enough, he discarded six and his opponent lost an even dozen cards. By now, their deck was looking much thinner, one more turn should do it. And they knew it, judging by their posture.

But that changed when they drew their next card, which they immediately played, and used it to destroy Gravity Bondage. Now their Blue-Eyed White Dragoness could attack, and it did. Scott's life points plummeted, but he hung on, with just 1100 left. This was going to be close. They ended their turn, feeling confident. He only had one Lustsworn monster on the field, they had more than six cards in their library, they had this won.

Scott seemed to think so too. But he drew his next card, and changed his mind. Glancing down at his graveyard, it looked sizable enough that it surely had what he needed. He played it, grinning as he revealed one of his strongest monsters, the Judgement Dracass. With attack points equal to the Blue-Eyed White Dragoness, the battle would be a stalemate unless something was done to change it. And Scott had just the plan in mind. Luckily, he had over 1000 life points remaining, otherwise he'd probably be in trouble. Using his Dracass' ability, he paid the 1000 life points, bringing his total down to a paltry 100. But it was worth it. The Dracass' ability destroyed every other card on the field, leaving his opponent wide open for a direct attack.

"Judgement Dracass, finish it!"

His opponent cursed colorfully for a moment, then began gathering up their cards. His Dracass hadn't taken their last life points, but they knew they couldn't get rid of it this turn, and not the next turn either. So they gave up. Not that they liked doing it, of course. Even with the shades in the way, Scott could easily feel their stare. But just as they were opening their mouth, his mom tapped him on the shoulder. He looked up, he'd completely forgotten about the time! His mom asked if he'd come with her, she needed him to fill some paperwork out. He nodded, and bid his opponent farewell. He felt their eyes burning a hole in his back as he walked away, though.

Soon, he found himself in one of the barely-used conference rooms of the Pokecenter. He saw his dad, Greg, was already waiting. He took a seat and looked at his parents, wondering what sort of paperwork they needed for him to fill out that he couldn't do at home. His dad, a tall and sturdily-built former Tamer, wore his familiar black sleeveless t-shirt and olive-green pants. He had a serious expression on his face, not the casual grin he usually had. Maybe this was more important than Scott had thought. He accepted the offered sheaf of papers, and looked them over. He recognized them almost at once, and sent a quizzical glance at his parents.

"Isn't this?"

"Yes, it's the test to get your Tamer's license."

"I thought you said you wanted me to wait until I was 17?"

"Well, we were talking about it, and decided that you seem mature enough now. Why, do you think you aren't ready?"

"No, it's not that. It's just a bit of a surprise. I mean, aren't newly-minted Tamers supposed to have a senior Tamer keep an eye on them for the first few weeks of their journies?"

"Yes, and we had actually put an ad on the net and someone finally agreed to do it. But before that, you need to get the test filed out, young man."

"I'm on it!" With that, Scott bent over the papers, scribbling down answers as quickly as he could. The test wasn't really hard, per se, but it was no walk in the park. Some of the questions were vague enough that he doubted there was a right answer. The test-makers probably put them in on purpose, just so nobody could get a perfect score. And then there were the questions that truly had no right answer, that were pure opinions. He didn't bother thinking for those, just putting down what felt like the first right answer he could think of for each one.

And then, finally, three and a half hours later, he was done. His parents had stayed in the room with him, although they'd moved to a single armchair a bit further away to cuddle while he worked. When he straightened up, his mom accepted his test and took it for grading, stepping out of the room, leaving Scott and his dad alone. He asked his dad once more why they decided he was ready early, and his dad admitted the secondary reason. Cinthia was beginning to go through her first puberty, from a pokekit to a pokegirl, and they all knew he and his sister were very close. So, in order to avoid any of the more embarassing outcomes, they were left with two choices. Either send Scott on his Tamer's journey early, or sell Cinthia to a Ranch. Scott's eyes widened at that, he had no idea all that had been going on. He took a moment to process it, then looked at his dad square in the eye.

"You made the right choice, Dad."

Just then, his mom came back into the room with his test results. She noticed the serious expressions on both of their faces before they were able to hide them, and asked what was going on. Greg admitted he told Scott the other reason. Scott blinked nervously, as his mom's expression altered into one he'd only seen twice before, and had hoped to never see again. He just hoped he wouldn't be caught in the blast zone when it finally happened. But then, just as quickly as it appeared, it was gone, and she was smiling sweetly at him, handing him back his test. He flipped the sheaf over, and looked at the results. Then grinned, as he had passed, and by a noticeable margin, too! Not bad for not really studying for it! But before he got too wound up, his mom caught his attention again.

"First off, congratulations on passing, I knew you could do it. Unfortunately, I have some bad news. Since this wasn't the official testing time, the center doesn't have any starting 'girls available, and the soonest we could get one from a Ranch wouldn't be here for another month. So unfortunately, I don't know what you're going to do for your Starter-"

"I'll be his Starter."

The three of them whirled around as one, looking at the figure standing in the doorway, the door that Janelle had forgot to close behind her. The figure looked familiar to Scott, and why wouldn't it? He just faced them in a duel a few hours ago. They pulled the hat from their head and removed their shades, finally showing their, no her, face. Her hair cascaded down her back, long white strands reaching down to her waist. She stared at the three of them with an unreadable expression, her red eyes rather intense. Scott felt like she was looking through him, seeing everything he was at a glance.

"Um, uh, you're a..."

"Yeah, I'm a pokegirl! I'm a Duelette."

"You're a girl?!"

A split second of utter silence. Caught off-guard by the comment, the Duelette actually fell on her rump for a second, before leaping to her feet once more, before glaring at Scott.

"And just what is that supposed to mean...?"

DUELETTE, the Advanced Card Gamer Pokégirl

Role: Card-player extraordinaire

Evolves: None
Evolves From: Ingenue (Become competent in Duel Monsters games/win a tournament), Tomboy (holding a Mana Crystal + win a Duel Monsters Duel)
Story this Pokégirl appears in: Ruby Adventures

A Pokégirl that was recently discovered via an unusual means. How an Ingenue managed to win a Duel Monsters tournament is beyond most Tamers (and most players of the game as well) most vivid imagination, but it happened. She evolved immediately upon winning the tournament. A few months later, it was reported that a specially trained Tomboy also evolved into a Duelette.

Upon evolution, the Pokégirl gains no less than one foot in height (never shorter than five and a half feet tall, more commonly around six feet tall), and becomes much curvier than before. All Duelette

Pokégirls possess C-cup sized breasts at the smallest, which delight the ones that evolved from a Tomboy. Unlike the Duelist Pokégirls, their hair color remains the same as their previous forms'. Duelettes that evolve from an Ingenue prefer to wear somewhat loose and yet possibly revealing clothes- most often wearing something like a trenchcoat, and little else. Those that evolve from a Tomboy prefer to wear very tight and extremely revealing clothes, if they wear anything at all, in order to flaunt their new assets.

The strategic capabilities of a Duelette increases, allowing the new Pokégirl to take advantage of the many different cards for the game in order to gain a better understanding of it. This Pokégirl’s mind is
amazingly adept at analyzing problems and situations, all while coming up with strategies that take into affect many different variables. Some Duelettes are even able to apply this cunning to a Tamer's harem,
and some have even become Alpha due to their strategic senses. A Duelette that is an Alpha, although used to being able to plan ahead, needs to be able to vent the added stress regularly. This often leads to an increased libido for the Duelette. Strangely, upon receiving additional responsibilities, Duelettes become more effective when taming the other Pokégirls within the harem.

All Duelettes, upon evolution, gain a Duelist Gauntlet. However, unlike the Black Gauntlet that a Duelist uses, or the red one that human players use, a Duelette gains a Silver Gauntlet. This Silver Gauntlet is actually made out of a light-weight metal that is as strong as steel, and allows the Pokégirl to utilize the gauntlet outside of a Duel Monsters battle as a weapon or shield. Many Duelettes attempt to gain new cards as often as possible in order to increase their Deck's offensive and defensive capabilities. Some Duelettes have been known to create up to half a dozen different decks, and even assist their Tamers in creating good decks to duel against them.

An unusual bit of information only made recently available is that Duelette's are suckers for being tamed by a Fighting-type Pokégirl. It has been proven that Duelettes that are tamed by a Fighting-type are somehow very effective for the Duelette. Instead of only being half effective compared to a taming by her tamer, a taming with a Fighting-type is actually 75% as effective as normal. However, this extends only until her next taming, which must be with her tamer, or else the Duelette may immediately go feral. A feral Duelette acts just like a feral duelist, except worse- A Duelette often has more cards that going flying when she tosses them all over the place.

Chapter End Notes: Decided to stop here, although it was a bit earlier than I originally planned. Hopefully this story will actually go on for a while, I have quite a bit tentatively planned for it.
All of the cards used in the duels are real, with some of the names changed. Most are pretty obvious, although if anyone can't figure one out, just ask.
