Disclaimer: I don't own One Piece, its characters, its plot or anything in the One Piece Universe. And no, I don't profit from writing this fic either. If I did... wouldn't that be great? But no, I don't, so don't sue me. |
Hey there, dear readers! I've taken some time off my Naruto stories to give myself a chance in the One Piece fanfic writing! I'm far from up to date concerning the Anime, and I don't think I ever read past chapter 5 in the Manga… please don't scowl at me! I do plan to read it… someday. Anyway, same as in the Naruto fandom, I couldn't help but notice there's a shitload of yaoi fics, so I guess I'll try and throw in one or two het stories in a vain and hopeless attempt to even things up. Alright, enough babbling. Let's get to the writing…

Buying love
"For the last time Sanji" yelled Nami with a tone that betrayed how angry and annoyed she was. "No means no!" The blonde cook stood in front of the female navigator, trying his best to give her his most pleading look, making him look like a sad puppy with one covered eye and very weird eyebrows. "Please Nami-swaaan!" begged Sanji as he bowed in front of her for the hundredth time. "If I give you that money, I won't be able to buy enough food for all of us when we reach the next island!"
It was a pretty good reason, but Nami wasn't one to yield, not when there was money (her money) involved. "Well, you should have thought of that before you let your debt grow this big" she said cold-heartedly while looking away. "If its food we're lacking, do something to control Luffy's appetite." Sanji turned away, defeated. It was clear as day that the red-headed navigator wouldn't forget a single Beli of his debt, sad puppy eyes or not. As he walked away though, Sanji couldn't help but sigh at how beautiful his greedy nakama looked when she was angry. "Oi, Usopp" he said seriously as he passed by his long-nosed fellow. "Grab your fishing pole. We'll need as much food as we can get."
As soon as Sanji was inside the kitchen, Nami began thinking out loud. "Hmpf. Reduce his debt?" she said while she paced back and forth on the deck. "What the hell is that idiot thinking?" The mere thought of having to give up on a single Beli made her furious. After all, she had earned that money, and not by stealing from them, but by offering them a fair deal.
As she walked around the deck once more, Nami heard a deep and sleepy voice behind her. "You know, you shouldn't be so hard on him." She turned angrily to reply, but Zoro wouldn't let her. "You don't want to starve to death in the middle of the ocean, do you?" asked the swordsman stretching himself after finishing his nap.
Zoro's question made her words stuck in her throat. A shiver ran down her spine as she imagined how horrible it must be to die of starvation, losing her strength and beauty every day, until she withered away… But before she could dwell on those thoughts too much, Nami shook her head and reminded herself of her anger at the cook's unpaid debt. "That's not happening" she said with confidence. "Sanji will work something out, even if he has to lock Luffy in a cage to keep him from devouring everything in the fridge." She made a brief pause, and then smiled. "But even if we're short on supplies, he'd always make something special for me. He's so in love…"
The swordsman frowned. "Sounds more like a sick obsession to me" he said with a disapproving tone. "But seriously, you should cut him some slack" added Zoro almost dismissingly.
The female navigator shot him a hard glare. "Hey, it wasn't my fault he can't keep it in his pants!" She glanced around; looking towards the horizon, but not a single island could be seen. "I know life in at sea is hard, especially when you men begin feeling lonely and start feeling urges you must satisfy. I'm only trying to help you guys out, and collecting a reasonable payment for it…" she was about to continue, but a loud snore interrupted her talking.
"Damn it Zoro! Don't you fall asleep while I'm talking to you!"

Late at night, everything was quiet in the going Merry. But even though the rest of the crew was asleep, Nami sat on her desk, calculating exactly how much it was that Sanji owed her. "Ok, so it's 64 thousand for this week… and another 90 thousand for last week…" She quickly scribbled down the numbers on a small piece of paper, her excitement growing as she got closer to the final result. "And finally, with the monthly interest, it gives me a grand total of… 2'250.000 Beli!" Her eyes sparkled as she said the number out loud, but a frown crept over her face after a second. "Wow. That's too much, even for him" said the female navigator as a tiny bit of remorse hit her. Maybe she should cut him some slack…
Putting down her quill and paper, Nami stretched herself and looked at the clock. It was already past midnight. With a sigh, the red-headed women tried to remember who was on guard duty at that hour, and her heart skipped a beat when she remembered Zoro had volunteered for the midnight shift. "Oh, god no" she said while standing up in a rush, with an obvious tone of despair in her voice. "If that idiot fell asleep during his guard…"
The nervous navigator dashed out of her cabin and looked around for Zoro. There was no sign of him. Why did the crew decide to put him on guard anyway? A quick look at the ocean around the ship didn't reveal any threats, nor any clue to the whereabouts of the former pirate hunter. "That bastard…" growled Nami with anger, once she realized there was nothing to fear. Not that this part of the sea was crawling with Marines, but still… one couldn't be too careful. "Did he go to bed?" she wondered. Knowing Zoro, if he did fell asleep, he wouldn't bother going to bed, since he could sleep pretty much anywhere. Regardless, she turned around and began walking back to the men's cabin, intent on giving hell to her green-haired nakama, should she find him there.
However, when she reached the door to the cabins, a voice from above made her stop in her tracks. "Oi Nami? What are you doing up so late?" Instantly recognizing the swordsman's voice, Nami glanced around, eager to find him so she could start her nagging. "Zoro? Where are you?"
After looking around a little more, Nami finally spotted her friend balancing himself on top of the mast with his right hand, the sweat that glistened on his skin the proof that he had been doing push-ups for quite a while. Though she no longer had a reason to, the female navigator couldn't suppress the urge to hit Zoro upside the head. He had made her worry, that was enough for him to deserve some punishment. Without saying a word, she began climbing to the crow's nest, preparing to punch the training swordsman.
She climbed fast, way faster than she was used to. Zoro looked at her, barely pausing his night training, curious as to what was up with Nami, and also rather amused by the navigator's huffs and puffs as she fought to recover her breath. Once at the crow's nest, Nami paused for a moment, not really sure what to do now. Her quick climb had drained her of some energy, and had helped in reducing her anger, if only a little.
"Nami?" asked Zoro, the slightest tone of concern present in his voice. "Did something happen? Why did you come all the way up here?" The red headed navigator panted for a few seconds, and then raised her head, meeting his gaze. "You're… never doing… guards again."
The green-haired swordsman cocked a brow at her. "Hm? And why is that?" he asked as he carefully climbed down from the mast to stand besides Nami. However, as soon as he stood within arms' reach of her, she raised her fist and gave him a good knock in the head. "Damn it woman! What the hell was that for?" yelled Zoro, a big bump already in place where Nami's fist had hit.
"Just in case you have slept during your guards" she said strictly. "And stop yelling. You're going to wake up everyone." Zoro rubbed his head in pain. Truth was he really enjoyed the night-guard duty. All of his sleeping during the day made it very difficult for him to sleep at night, and while everyone else was in bed, he could burn that excess energy training without any kind of distraction. Keeping his voice down, he made sure he explained all that to Nami.
"So, you're a night person?" asked Nami with a little surprise. She could barely believe she hadn't noticed that about Zoro. "I had no idea." With this sudden learning of the swordsman's habits, the red-haired navigator realized it was actually very little what she knew about him. Nami looked at the ocean, obviously in deep thought. She didn't feel like going to sleep just yet, and the cool moonlight reflected on the water's surface seemed to entrance her, making her oblivious to the former pirate hunter at her side.
After waiting a few seconds for her to either go to bed or keep talking, Zoro decided to bring up to the conversation another subject which concerned him. "Say, Nami?" his deep voice managed to catch her attention, and she turned to look at him. "I still think you're being too rough on the cook" he said plainly, not really expecting her to change her mind.
"Hmm? Why do you care?" asked the female pirate with true curiosity.
Zoro frowned and replied: "It may not look like it, but he's my friend. It's not good to see him ripped off like that." Nami gazed at him with faked innocence, but he pressed his point. "Don't play dumb. You charge him at least three times more than you do Luffy or Usopp."
Nami grimaced inwardly, unable to miss how the former pirate hunter hadn't included himself with the Captain and the gunner. Despite all of her efforts to get intimate with him, of all her invitations and innuendos, Zoro was the only one in the crew that didn't take part on her business. It was a concerning issue for Nami, since the swordsman didn't owe her anything anymore, and therefore, she had nothing to threaten him with, should she ever need him to do as she said.
"Hey, it's just business" she said casually. "He's the one who wants me the most. It's only fair he should pay more, don't you think?" Zoro just groaned. There was no way he could ever convince Nami of giving up on money, so why bother?
Nami remained quiet for a while, trying to come up with a way to entangle her green-haired friend into owing her big time, and then, quite unexpectedly, she shot him an impish smile. "If you're so worried, how about sharing his debt?"
Zoro instantly changed his mood. Of course, he was always willing to fight a whole army to help a friend in need, but getting indebted with Nami was something he just wasn't up to. "Forget it. I've got a clean slate with you, and I intend on keeping it that way" said the swordsman, while he looked away, clearly annoyed. It had been nothing short of a miracle that he had managed to pay back Nami every single Beli of the sum she had lent him back in Loguetown.
A slight frown crept over the female navigator's features as she heard his answer. "Oh, well. It was worth a shot" she said dismissively. There had to be a way of changing the young swordsman's mind, if not to share Sanji's debt, at least to have him make one of his own, and she was intent on finding it as soon as possible. Luckily for her, Nami was unbelievably clever, cunning and scheming when it came to money. As a plan began to form in her mind, the red-haired woman suppressed a smile.
After another long silence, Nami moved casually and leaned against the edge of the crow's nest, staring out into the sea. "Say, Zoro?" she began speaking, adding the slightest amount of sadness into her voice. "Have you ever been in love?"
The green-haired swordsman leaned against the mast and stared at the night sky. The navigator's words had stirred something in his mind, memories of times long gone, but never forgotten. Yet he didn't feel like giving Nami a straight answer, so Zoro threw the question right back at her. "Have you?"
Nami shook her head sadly, but smiling inwardly at her acting skills and his evasive. "No, not yet" she said with a sigh. "It must be nice, don't you think?" The female navigator half-turned her body towards Zoro, studying carefully but discretely the changes in his expression.
"Yeah, I guess" said Zoro plainly. "But what's with you, asking this all of a sudden?" he said with a little suspicion. A few months with Nami on the crew had taught him the red-haired navigator seldom did anything without a hidden purpose. Almost every action she made was intended for her own benefit, even if it didn't seem like it at first sight.
"Sigh… I don't know" said Nami adding a little more sadness to her voice, while she moved next to the swordsman to rest against the mast. "I guess it's because… you're the only one in this ship… who knows me for who I really am. I don't have to put up an act when I'm around you."
Zoro raised an eyebrow in confusion. "What do you mean? Everyone here knows you like I do." It was true, all the crewmembers knew of her past, her habits, her dreams and her sudden outbursts of anger towards her nakama. There were pretty much no secrets between crewmembers anymore. "Perhaps the others know you even better, since they've all slept with you" added the former pirate hunter with a slight smirk on his face.
A frown crept over the female navigator's features. "That's exactly my point" she said with an annoyed voice as she inched closer to Zoro's warm body. "I feel that since I began this business of mine, the others see me more as the ship's whore than as the helpless girl they saved from Arlong's crew." Nami was a bit surprised of how sad her voice actually sounded, and even more surprised to realize she wasn't faking all of it. Deep down inside, so deep she hadn't even realized it, she was concerned with how the other men's attitude towards her had changed. But on the outside, she had told herself she didn't care.
However, much to her annoyance, Zoro paid no attention to her sadness and just let out a big yawn. "Well, if that's somebody's fault" said the swordsman coldly "you got no one to blame but yourself." A brief silence fell between the two of them, as Nami thought of a comeback that didn't spoil her act, and Zoro just looked at the stars.
"You may be right" said Nami with a sigh of defeat. "But my point is that even if you too see me as the rest of the crew does, you haven't changed the way you act around me." After saying this, she turned to Zoro and met his gaze. "I really appreciate that" she said with a warm smile, trying to look more cute and innocent than sly and sexy.
A little taken back by her unusual behavior, Zoro struggled not to look away, almost afraid to say what was in his mind. "Don't tell me you brought this whole 'being in love' thing up because you…"
For a second, Nami looked at him questioningly before catching up. Then, with a sudden but slight blush, she quickly stammered "N-no, of course not! Don't be silly." She could hardly believe the nerve on the swordsman. He thought she was in love with him?
"What I meant was that you're a good friend, that's all" she said trying to clear the confusion, when a sudden thought sparked in her mind. "I mean, you're nice. In fact, you're so nice I could consider giving you one free night with me…" Having laid the bait, Nami hoped the swordsman would bite. With a little luck, he might even get hooked up and provide a boost for her business. "So… said the female navigator while she shot Zoro a playful grin. "You interested?"
Without saying a word, Zoro looked away, picked up his shirt and swords, and started climbing down to the deck.
*Damn it!* thought Nami as she let out a frustrated sigh. *Is he made of stone of what?*
Once again, Zoro had managed to avoid yet another of her approaches. She had figured that playing it a little innocent and hurt would work on the swordsman, but it seemed she had read him wrong. But, just as he was reaching the deck and she was giving up hope, Zoro's deep voice rang out and reached her ears. "I'll… I'll think about it. Good night."
Genuinely surprised, Nami rested her elbows on the edge of the crow's nest and watched her green haired friend disappear inside the men's quarters. "Well, well, well…" She said to herself. "It seems it worked after all. Who'd have thought…?" With a content smile, the red-haired navigator went back down to her room, already planning what to do to make her night with Zoro totally unforgettable.
