Prologue
A wild wind blew through his long white hair as lightning hissed from the dark storm clouds above his head. There were fragrant pink cherry blossoms flying through the scented air as he ran through the palace garden. The thunder boomed and he could hear the distant growling of the hungry demons that had been unleashed upon the royal family. He could hear the blood-splattering screams and the snapping of bones within wrathful jaws.
His black robes billowed around his lithe frame like the silken wings of a black swan as he raced up the green hill to where the shrine of the Goddess resided. He instantly cried out when something grabbed him by his hair from behind, jerking him backwards with immortal strength. A shimmering blade made of lightning hot fire was held to his pale throat, and soft laughter echoed in his pointy ear.
“Did you truly believe you could escape from me by running?” That deep and scary voice chuckled. It was full of blood and crazed with power. “I really should just slit your throat right here for daring to even attempt flight from me.”
“How could you do this, Yin?” He cried in fear. “How could you kill the royal family like this?”
“Shut up, Yang!” Yin hissed, pulling on his snowy locks. “I’m sick and tired of your servitude like manners. We are gods, and yet these mortal worms treat us like horses being ridden into battle. We have served this arrogant family for too long. It is time to take back our gifts.”
Yang pulled away from him, spinning around in a snap of dark silk as thunder bellowed. He stared at his dark-haired twin in his flowing white robes. His eyes were crazed with the power in which he possessed. They were glowing like twin red stars within his handsome face. There was blood all over his hands. They were painted with it.
“You killed them!” He cried. Tears fell like silver stars from his moonstone colored eyes. “You killed…HIM!” A great beam of lava white light burst from his hand, striking his brother right in his broad chest, making him stumble backwards with a grunt. It caused him to fall to his knees in pain. Those blood red eyes gazed down at him and those smiling white teeth were like the deadly fangs of a snarling dragon.
“That was truly amazing, Yang,” Yin snickered like the flames devouring the palace. “You actually had the gall to strike me, and it hurt, too.”
“How could you?” Yang screamed, looking up at him with such sorrow. “How could you kill him, too? You knew I loved him most of all!”
“It doesn’t matter!” Yin yelled over him. “You are my brother! We are tied to each other for all time. Your love belongs only to me. You are the light in all things and I’m the darkness seething within. You will help me in retrieving and destroying the treasures of the gods. We will then rage war in Heaven. We will show them that we will not be bound for all time to serve these pathetic mortals.”
Yang’s eyes widened. “You can’t do that. The Goddess will not permit it. We serve Amaterasu and her bloodline.”
“Well,” Yin laughed evilly. “Her bloodline is splattered all over the palace floors and walls as we converse, dear brother.” He held up the divine mirror in his large hands. Yang’s breath froze in his lungs. His dark twin threw the mirror to the ground at his booted feet, where it shattered into a thousand pieces. A bright flash went off, and the ground shook for only a second.
“The mirror of Amaterasu,” Yang gasped. “You…”
“We’re free,” Yin laughed. “We no longer serve her. She can no longer control our powers.”
Yang gnashed his perfect white teeth, and lightning rained down like fiery spears from the black sky, striking his dark twin. Yin howled in painful rage, and Yang ran from him. He was in agony as well. To hurt his brother meant hurting himself, too.
“You can’t run from me!” Yin shrieked with the voices of many demons. “You can’t do anything to me!”
Yang dashed into the shrine, falling to his face before the graceful statue of the Goddess. She was looking down at him and her eyes were closed.
“Come out of there!” Yin bellowed. His voice was deepening dramatically. “You’re really making me angry, Yang!”
He turned to see a coiling black dragon at the entrance, gazing in at him with radiant red eyes. His twin had taken his forbidden celestial form, and he was growing larger and larger.
“Please!” Yang cried to the Goddess. “Do something!”
“Fool!” Yin hissed, laughing at him. “I broke her mirror. She no longer has a body in this world.”
“No,” Yang said, shaking his head in denial. “If that were true, you’d simply waltz in and take me.”
“You idiot!” Yin snapped. His teeth were like shimmering bastard swords in the firelight. His great jaws roared. “I don’t want to hurt you! Now, get out here and obey me!”
“You killed Hisoka!” He screamed, turning his back on him. “I…”
A loud crash came from the back of the shrine, causing him to gasp. Had someone escaped from the demons?
“YOU STUPID MARSHMALLOW!” A loud voice roared over giggling. “I’VE TOLD YOU A HUNDRED TIMES TO WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOING!”
“Get back here, Yang!” Yin seethed, coiling and hissing. “You really don’t want me to come in there.”
“Now, Kuro-puu,” a second voice said. “Mokona was only making sure that you were a pillow for the rest of us.”
“SHUT UP, YOU DAMN WIZARD!”
Yang threw open the golden doors, and nearly collapsed. He cried out, running at the taller man, throwing his arms around his waist. “Hisoka!”
“Yang!” Yin screamed and the whole shrine quaked from his fury.
“Who the hell are you?” The tall warrior asked with a menacing growl. “And who the hell was that?”
Yang pulled away, looking up at him with wet, stunned eyes. His heart fell like a meteor from the sky. This wasn’t his Hisoka. What cruel prank was this? He smelled wrong and his eyes were not the brightest emeralds in all the land.
“Demons of darkest flame ARISE!” Yin roared like a typhoon. “AND CONSUME THIS PLACE!”
Roars, growls, screams, and shrieks filled the smoky air. It was like the sound of a thousand-thousand wings beating like rolls of thunder.
“We are all in grave danger,” Yin said, looking around for a way out. “My brother…”
“Come out of there, Yang!” Yin growled. “Or I shall send legion after legion in after you! I’ve got legions enough to make you sweat and you know it!”
“Mokona?” The blond with the bright blue eyes asked. “Where are Sayaoran and the princess?”
A shrill scream answered that question.
