Choices: A death Note Fan-fiction
By Aurora Moon

I hit an creative road-block with the other story... so I was working and editing on this one instead for a while. This story is almost similar to my other story, but with some major differences. I basically think of this as the fan fiction that my Death Note ideas go into instead if they cannot find a place in my other stories.

Anyway, I hope you like this.

Oh by the way... Disclaimers apply, I still do not own copyrights on Death Note in any way at all. :P

and this story will have plenty of spoilers for those who has not fhinshed death note at all! so be warned.
===========================

In the shinigami realm, there lived an creature named Nu.

She had the appearance of being like that of an living rock, with a hundred eyes covering her whole body. She had no limbs at all, nor wings at all... so for some it was often an mystery how she could manage to move at all. However she was quite supple and fast as any other shinigami out there, despite appearances.

However, in the land of death, with many other equally strange-looking characters out there, this wasn't what was so unique about her.

It was the fact that she was the second most powerful creature in this realm next to the shinigami realm. Many respected and feared her just as much as they did the king. The reason for this was because her eyes served many purposes, other than being able to see the name and lifespan of others. It was rumored that she was able to look into the past and the future itself. Thus, it was like she could look into your very being, and know whenever you were guilty or innocent.

For Nu, Time was never quite linear or intangible. To her it was also something that could be manipulated. So if she so wanted, she could easily go to the time of your origins and make sure that you were never born, or in the case of the other shinigami, never created.

So thus, this was why others save for The King feared her so. They knew better than to publicly insult her, least they become her enemy.

However, they did think her very strange... for she had one trait that was rather.... human-like, so to coin an phrase.

This shinigami wholly believed in redemption and repentance. She believed in things like Evil and Good when others didn't, and firmly believed that Good should always win over Evil.
She believed that all living things, even the shinigami, had both their light and dark sides.

And most of all, She also believed in the choices and freewill which not only defined your future for you... but also how good or evil you were.

This was the other thing that often disturbed other shinigami out there who got to know her.

To other Shinigami, this sort of belief amongst one of them was against an Shinigami's very nature. To most of them, Death itself was supposed to be neutral. It held no biases against any person, race, gender, or religion. It had no concept of Good or Evil... in death's eyes, both good and evil men were equal.
And so naturally, the Shinigami who were merely agents of death, held similar views.

The only purpose an Shinigami had, was to thin out the ranks of all living things in the universe so that there would always an perfect balance in life. For if life overflowed all over the worlds, there would always be a very strong possibility that the worlds could slowly start to collapse and die from the inside, being unable to support that much life. Then life itself would vanish, leaving the creatures of death nothing to feast on. Without Life, Death would vanish as well....thus nothing would be exist anymore.

But.... as Nu knew, nothing was ever that simple. The Shinigami, even though they thought of themselves as creatures of death, were still ALIVE in their own ways. As much as they were loathe to admit, they could form attractions, hate, and crave things just much as any other living thing. They had their own egos, their own fears and desires. Thus, they too could easily be both Evil and Good. They were not merely tools of Death, but creatures with free will.

They, just like everyone else, had CHOICES to make.
------------------------------------------------------------------

"Why are you dwelling over Ryuk's fate this much?" The king wondered, as he looked down at Nu. "You agreed after all, that he was truly guilty of trickery and the theft of the notebooks. You also agreed that it was only right for him to be chained up in that cave for two eons as punishment for his crimes."

"It's not him that I'm thinking about. That story he told us... about that human. I'm wondering if what he said about that human was even true." Nu replied.

The king then laughed. "Oh, yes. Light Yagami, was it? I have to admit that I was impressed at the intensity of the human's spirt as he set out to make his world a 'better' place. Too bad I wasn't looking down at the world as it happened, eh? It must had made for an interesting show."

"I'm currently replaying the events as they occurred in a few of my eyes as we speak. It seems that there was also another very interesting human, by the name L Lawliet. I quite like him... he's obviously got a very good soul."

The king actually looked envious for a second there. Although he was very powerful, and could mapluate time, space and matter... he didn't have the eyes that Nu had, and he also didn't have her talent for moving though time so effortlessly. She went whenever she pleased in time and space in a blink, and would come back without even feeling out of breath.

He was just like a bumbling old man compared to her in that regards. If he moved time back an hundred years, he'd be fatigued and out of breath. However that wasn't to say that he was weak, of course. His talents simply laid in not only creating new shinigami, but in the fact that he could actually create new life if he so desired. Likewise, he could also destroy souls so that they would never exist again, much less get reborn. He was also older than time, having been the very first thing in this universe to die and then become reborn.

It was in the same way that the residents of all the living worlds out there had each their own talents and weaknesses.

"I have have an request." Nu replied, a dozen eyes looking upwards at him. The rest of her eyes were still staring off into space, quite possibly still replaying the events of the past that took place.

The King grinned. From the moment Nu asked him that, he knew it was going to be very entertaining. Nu had never dispointed him in that regards. "What is it?"

"This Light Yagami... It seems like such a shame to leave him rotting in the confines of Mu. I imagine that it would probably take you eons before you even get around to mucking about in Mu. and to make an shinigami out of him, hmm?" Nu spoke.

The king looked puzzled. "Turn Light into an Shinigami... Such a simple request from you? how strange. usually you want something more complex than that."

Nu's eyes smiled. "Mmm, you know me so well. It's not so much that I want Light to become an Shinigami.... I want to play an betting game using his soul."

The King then gave a big grin. "And knowing you so well, I suspect this is an game of repentance?"

Nu nodded. blinking many eyes at once. "Yes. and I want to use Ryku as well. after all, his fate is now rather tied closely to Light's."

As Nu explained her plan to the King, the King couldn't help but explode in a fit of loud, hysterical laughter that could be heard across the realm.

Oh, this was going to be good. This game was too good to pass up, how could he refuse such a plan?

"very well, I shall release Ryku to you."

=============================

Ryku wasn't sure that he heard right. "What? don't tell me you've lost your mind completely. Uh... no offense there, miss."

Nu sighed. she couldn't help but forget how simplistic some Shinigami could be. "Yes, it is as I said. I want you to shadow Light once again."

"But... how? He's in Mu right now. he's completely dead now in the Realm of living." Ryku looked puzzled.

"I suspect that even you know that I have the ability to move though time, correct?" Nu asked, quite patient with the fact that ryku was unable to wrap his mind around different time lines, much less alternate realities.

"so.. uh, you want me to go though that all over again? No offense, but when you've done it once, doing it twice becomes no fun at all." Ryku then looked dour at the thought. "I already know what's going to happen. So why bother?"

"No, this time it shall be different. you see, you will become a very key player in deciding Light Yagami's future."

Ryku looked more confused than ever. "What do you mean?"

"Well, for one," Nu merely said, "Will he redeem himself as an human being.... or shall he become an Shinigami? that is the betting game between The King and Myself. I've already laid out an new branch of the main time line... so that it becomes an alternate future of sorts. This is our new playing ground."

Ryku's eyes widened. " You mean I get to be entertained all over again, whatever Light's fate is?"

He then started grinning. "You know, I quite like the idea... I don't mind seeing what Light would do differently this time. When you put it that way, I don't mind playing along...."

Nu slowly blinked all of her eyes. "Good. I'm going to free you now, and give you those new Death notes that the king has crafted for our little bet. You won't need to be stealing notebooks from anybody this time around, understand? you need to scatter most of those notebooks all over, and then wait weeks before dropping one in front of light himself."

Ryku felt the chains around him start to loosen, until his shackles were undone. He then reached out to take the death notes. "Alright, you got it boss."

"But be careful!" Nu warned, "The king has chosen his own players, as I have chosen you. And like you, they have been shinigami who were punished for many various crimes that they had done against other Shinigami. Some of their crimes went beyond simple trickery and theft...they found ways to kill other Shinigami."

Ryku tilted his head. "You mean, there's more ways to kill Shinigami besides making them fall in love?"

"Yes." Nu quite simply answered.

Ryku bared his sharp teeth into a giant, toothy grin. "So, it's not just Humans against Humans this time... it's also Shinigami against Shinigami.... Ha. Ha. hahaha... Kekekekekekekekekekeke! How interesting!"

=================================================================

So how did you like the first chapter?

Be warned, the next chapters are going to be heavy on Misa, and then Light. But don't be alarmed... I'm not a MisaXLight shipper at all. in fact I don't even like that pairing...
