Chapter One
He hated those damn looks.
A young man with startling crimson eyes and black hair glared hatefully at the people in the room before bowing slightly to Lady Celi. He didn’t mind her too much since he knew full well that she hated the war. Of course he supposed that it was because two of her three sons were involved in the fighting part that she even hated the damn thing.
In a minute, that damn Stoffel von Spitzweg would give him another stupid command as if he were a dog. Stupid nobles, didn’t they get that innocent people were paying for their commands? Of course not. They seemed to have a universal belief that nothing they did had a consequence.
Ah, and here comes the order. “Tell the Maoh what you’ve seen.” Stoffel ordered with a steady voice that just dripped with smugness.
“Ask me nicely,” the young man said with a small smirk. “Maybe I’ll consider telling you whatever it is you think that I saw.”
“Are you challenging the Maoh?” Stoffel demanded, anger showing in his eyes.
“I would never dream of challenging the Maoh. You, Lord von Spitzweg, I enjoy challenging seeing as you’re not the Maoh and you think that you can order me around.” The young man said thoughtfully.
Stoffel frowned before answering, “You aren’t above being arrested for suspicion of treason.”
The young man frowned in return, his pupils dilating as an image appeared before his eyes. After a few moments, he blinked before looking amused as if he had seen something that he found funny. “As the summer ends two infants will be born. One a boy of double black and a girl that is the sun and moon’s eclipse,” he said with a pleased look. “The boy will become Moah in his fifteenth year and he will be the greatest Maoh that this land has come to know and will perhaps ever know. He will be even greater than Shinou himself.”
He ignored the hisses that left their lips, knowing that he had just uttered unspeakable things. “No one is greater than Shinou,” somebody hissed. “Don’t speak such lies or else you’ll be struck down where you stand.”
“Are you saying that my vision is incorrect? The boy will become a great king and will be born as July fades way to August.” The man bowed slightly before turning to leave.
“What about the girl?” Stoffel demanded.
The young man smiled slightly as he looked over his shoulder. “She’s the sun and moon’s eclipse,” he answered patiently.
“Tell the Maoh more about her, Zach!”
Zach chuckled before answering with an amused look, “I just told you all that I’m willing to reveal about her. If you want more, then you’d better find another demon seer. Oh, that’s right. I’m the last one because nobody came to help us in our time of need. I guess you have to reap what you sow.”
With that said, Zach walked out of the room and headed towards the courtyard to find peace.
“I heard that you refused to inform my mother of the rest of your vision.” Conrart said calmly as he looked down at the black-haired man.
“Stoffel was the one doing the ordering.” Zach answered calmly as he continued to write in his book. “If your mother had been the one asking, I probably would have been more willing to give her answers but since it was Stoffel, I wasn’t saying a damn thing to him.”
“You can’t tell her who will survive this war or even what’s going on behind enemy lines.” Conrart reminded him.
“You know that my visions are permanently screwed up.”
“Yet you managed to see a vision that didn’t involve anybody dying.”
“She helped me see them.” Zach answered with an almost loving voice as he continued to write. “My eclipse girl.”
Conrart looked at the book for a moment before shaking his head. “How is anybody supposed to read that if you keep writing it like that?” Conrart questioned.
Zach smiled softly before answering, “That’s the point.”
Both men sat in silence for a little while before Conrart said, “We’re going to battle tomorrow.”
“I know. Your mother looked upset.”
“She knows that we’re willing to die to prove our loyalty.”
“I’d happily die to prove my loyalty.”
“Not happening.”
Zach frowned before standing up and staring coolly at Conrart. “Maybe I want to fight. Some of those humans owe me lives.” Zach shouted at the brunette.
“Are you forgetting that you’re half human?”
“I haven’t forgotten! How could anybody forget that they’ve got human filth in them?”
Conrart frowned before answering, “Someday you’ll grow to appreciate your heritage.”
Zach’s eyes narrowed as he stared at Conrart before spitting at the man. “I despise both sides,” he answered coldly, “but I’m willing to put up with one side over the other for your sake.”
“Make sure you watch for me. I promise that I’ll come back to you.” Conrart answered before walking away.
As Zach sat back down, he closed his eyes and felt a tear roll down one cheek. Nobody seemed to truly realized how fortunate they were to live with blissful ignorance regarding their future. Did they not realize the burden of knowing about what was going to happen? No, probably not if they thought that demon seers were insane just for the fun of it.
Opening his eyes again, Zach wrote a final sentence in his book before quietly getting up and slipping into the library. In time they’d discover the book he had so carefully recorded his visions in and no one would be able to understand what he had seen unless they could read the writing.
And knowing full well that no one in the castle knew how, it would be quite a while before they figured anything out.
