Part I

It was far too quiet in Vash Zwingli's house. True, it wasn't exactly a noisy place, but there was always some sort of noise. Maybe it was the fact that he came back home so late, and Lili was already asleep. Of course there would be less noise at this time of night, but it didn't change the fact that it was much more quiet than it should have been.

Vash frowned as he flipped a light switch; nothing happened. Okay, the power was out, that explained why it was so quiet; he could normally hear the hum of the refrigerator upon entering his home. The blond sighed as he shut the front door and headed down the hall to his room. He had gone through a long day, seeing as Italy had shown up on his property many more times than usual and had to deal with some people pestering his boss to change currency. God forbid he didn't use the Euro like everyone else.

His steps slowed as he passed by Lili's room. That was odd; she normally slept with her door shut, but now it was wide open. He was about to continue to his room, thinking that she probably fell asleep while waiting up for him and didn't get a chance to close the door, when a strange sound coming from the room caused him to stop completely. It sounded like metal scraping against wood. Vash was not sure what it could be, but he had a feeling that noise should not be coming from Lili's room.

The Swiss man slowly entered the room, looking around. Nothing looked like it could be the source of the noise. Giving up and assuming it was just a tree branch scraping the house, his emerald eyes fell on Lili. Who was in pajamas. Which meant she had planned to go to bed and not wait up for him. Meaning there was no reason for the door to be open. Vash suddenly tensed, hearing the floor creak behind him. There was no hesitation as his hand shot towards the pistol strapped to his waist. However, before he could grab it, a gloved hand closed around his wrist. He turned quickly to see Ivan Braginski standing with his faucet pipe raised over his head.

“Zdravstvuyte Shvyeĭtsariya,” was the last thing he heard before the cold steel made contact with his head, knocking him unconscious.

When Vash regained consciousness, the first thing he noticed was that he was blindfolded, his arms were bound behind his back, and he was lying on a cold floor. The second thing he noticed was the pounding headache he now had. He cursed under his breath as he moved into an upright position as slowly as possible, not wanting to aggravate the head wound he no doubt had from being clocked over the head.

He sat silently for a moment, waiting for the throbbing in his head to cease and listening to see if he could identify where he was. Unfortunately, the only sound in the room was his breathing. Figuring he would only have a short time alone, he began to try and loosen the rope binding his arms together. But he had been tied up very well; ten minutes of struggle proved fruitless and the knots were as tight as ever.

“Scheiße,” he muttered, finally giving up, before moving backwards against a wall.

Before long a door opened and Vash turned his head in the direction of the loud footsteps entering the room. He jumped slightly as the door slammed but showed no other sign of panic as he was approached. Once the footsteps stopped, he decided to speak.

“What is the meaning of this, Ivan?”

Vash shifted uncomfortably at the following silence. He hated to admit it, but he was a bit nervous about the situation he was now in. He knew the Baltics were terrified of Ivan for good reason, and to be helpless around him was nothing ideal. So he was glad he was already leaning against the wall, otherwise he would have fallen over as the larger man knelt down, practically pressed against him.

“Why, you are to become one with me, of course!” the Russian finally answered, far too cheery for the Swiss man’s tastes.

Vash scowled, knowing that Ivan was grinning like a maniac despite being blindfolded. He should have known; he had been making offhand remarks to him the past week about how much better he would be if Vash wasn’t neutral, if he was ‘one with Mother Russia.’ He shifted his body in response, using his shoulder to push the older male back a few inches.

“That is not happening,” he said.

“Oh, that is a shame. I guess I could always become one with your sister then, da? She is already on the bed, so it is very convenient.”

Vash stiffened at this; how could he have let this happen? It was one thing when he was the only one in danger, but it was another matter when Lili was involved. If only he had come home early, hadn’t let his guard down when he didn’t see anyone in her room, then maybe this wouldn’t have happened. He clenched his teeth in anger and disappointment in himself; he was a horrible person for letting this happen.

“B-Bruder?”

“Lili?!”

“Ah, it seems she is awake now. You would like to see her, da?”

“Yes, get this damned blindfold off me!”

Vash was surprised that Ivan actually did remove the blindfold from his eyes, and even more surprised when he was picked up with ease and dropped on the bed next to Lili. He was glad to see that she had not been tied up and looked to be okay. Lili instantly wrapped her arms around him, sniffling softly.

“Bruder, y-your head is b-bleeding,” she whispered, tears starting to form in her eyes.

“I know, but I’m okay,” he replied, wishing he could hug her back to reassure her. He doubted Ivan would untie his arms to allow him to do so, and didn’t want to push their luck by asking.

Lili said nothing in reply, but clung to Vash tighter, face buried in his chest. Vash simply glared at Ivan, who had picked up his pipe in the short time that he had been paying attention to Lili. He couldn’t believe that Ivan would bring Lili into a situation like this. To threaten him, a well armed nation, was one thing. But Lili? She wouldn’t stand a chance against the large Russian on her own. And as long as Lili was in danger, he was going to have to give into Ivan’s demands to keep her safe.

“So who shall it be, comrade?” Ivan said, breaking the silence. “You or her?”

“I can’t let you do this to her, Ivan,” was Vash’s immediate reply. “Me.”

“Ah, so predictable; always the protective brother!” Vash shuddered at his tone; cheery, yet full of dark promises of what was to come soon. Ivan held his hand out to Lili. “Here, I will ensure that she does not see anything inappropriate.”

“B-Bruder…?”

Vash looked over at Lili; she looked unsure of what she should do. He himself was not sure if he should let Ivan within five yards of his sister. However, he figured the alternative would be Lili witnessing whatever Ivan had planned for him. And with the possibilities in his mind about what was to happen, he did not want her to see any of it.

“…go, Lili,” he said. “I’ll be fine, don’t worry.”

The girl looked at him, uncertainty still on her face, before taking the Russian’s hand. He led her away from the bed towards the door. Vash breathed a sigh of relief, glad that she was being taken out of the room. His sigh was cut short when Ivan brought his pipe down hard on Lili’s head. His eyes widened as she cried out loudly in pain, falling to the floor.

“LILI!”

Vash thanked the heavens that his legs had not been tied up as he launched himself off the bed and at Ivan, who was continuing to bludgeon the young girl’s skull. Without the use of his arms, though, he was deflected back with ease. He fell on his back and struggled to pull himself up again, eyes unable to pull away from the gory scene now in front of him; Lili had ceased to move after a few blows, and now lay face down in a pool of her blood. He started to breathe heavily, angry tears stinging his eyes; even from several feet away he could tell she was dead.
