“Akira, could you please list all the different evolutions of Eevee and their types?” The teacher asked, glowering down at the 20 year old man.
Akira Takahashi glared at her; this was a ritual of theirs. Akira was a Senior studying the evolutions of Pokémon at the National Poké-University. He was graduating tonight, but he didn’t know if he actually could graduate. It all depended on Mrs. Lavender. “Flareon: Fire Type, Jolteon: Electric Type, Vaporeon: Water Type, Espeon: Psychic Type, Umbreon: Dark Type, Glaceon: Ice Type, Leafeon: Grass Type…” He paused, but he always did the same thing. Instead of stopping his list and getting a passing participation grade, he continued. “Mecheon: Steel Type, Ryueon: Dragon Type, Poiseon: Poison Type, Bagueon: Bug Type, Seisheon: Ghost Type, Hikoeon: Flying Type, Sensheon: Fighting Type, Iwaeon: Rock Type, and Doeon: Ground Type.”
She pursed her lips together. “Get out!” She yelled, pointing to the door.
When Akira was 6 years old, his mother and he had went on a trip to an unidentified island for his birthday. His mother, god rest her soul, was an explorer like no other. She, herself, had discovered several species of Pokémon. On the trip, an accident happened, there was a rockslide at the base of a mountain. She pushed him into a cave, and she was crushed by the boulders. He sat in that cave for a long time, sobbing and crying for his mother; he even cried himself to sleep after hours of being alone. When he awoke, he had been moved. One by one, they appeared to him, his savors. There were a few Eevee, many Eevee evolutions, and new eons - eons Akira had never seen before.
They were all so friendly and nice - they had never even seen a human before, it seemed. Akira had wished he could stay forever. But, knowing he couldn’t, the Eons helped him find his way back to the helicopter and he used the radio to get help to come. But he was only six, no one believed him. They told him it was his mind playing ticks on him - but he knew they were real. When he graduated, he was going to go back to the island and see those Pokémon again.
The teacher dismissed the class and left the room, pointing at Akira and beckoning him to follow her in. Once he was seated in front of her desk, and her behind it, she began. “Akira, if you keep having these delusions about eons, I’m afraid I can’t pass you.”
Akira took a deep breath and gazed off onto a point behind the teacher. “I was just having fun. I know there are only 7 evolutions of Eevee.” He said in a dull voice. He would humor he for now - when he graduated, it wouldn’t matter what she thought. He would fund his own trip to the uncharted island and bring back the Eevees - or find out how they evolved and show everyone.
Mrs. Lavender pursed her lips together once more, but didn’t speak right away. Finally, she told him in low, soft tones, “There are many people who also believe in other existing eons. But in order to graduate from this university, you must show that you believe this university to be correct, do you understand?”
His eyes widened and he nodded to her. “Is that all Mrs. Lavender?”
She paused, then nodded before saying, “Graduation is tonight at nine. If you do not wish to attend, you may pick up your diploma in the main office.”
Akira smiled - he would not attend. Today, he would be heading to the one place he longed to see again since he was six years old.
~ ^ ~ ^ ~
Akira arrived home and called out to his Pokémon to greet him. A Leafeon, Glaceon, Flareon, and Vaporeon eagerly ran up to him, mewing in happiness. Because Eevee was a rare Pokémon, he didn’t have all the evolutions, but that would soon change.
His first Eevee was he Vaporeon. She was sweet and loving to him and he had named her Hope because she was his hope to a new future. He had gotten her when he was 10. Two years later, a trainer came to him with a Eevee he could no long take care of. Akira was well known for his love of Eevee and the trainer hoped he would give him a good home. Akira named the male Eevee Wize.
The decision to evolve Hope and Wize was left up to them. Hope had always loved swimming, so she had chosen to become a Vaporeon. Wize had loved curling up next the to fire place and basking in it’s warmth so he chosen to become a Flareon.
When Akira was 13, he was graced with a Pokémon egg one morning by Hope and Wize. He had been ecstatic about it - but they never produced another one. Truth be told, they didn’t even like each other very much. Akira believed they had made the egg for him, not each other. The 13 year old Akira carried the egg everywhere with him and much to his delight, it hatched a week later before bed time. He was surprised, however, when twin Eevee’s were born.
Hope had taken care of her babies fine enough, but Akira did most of the work. He hand raised the boy and girl until they could stand on their own four feet just fine. He asked what they wanted to be, - if they even wanted to evolve - and they were happy that he was considerate enough to bother asking. The girl, named Nymph as she was very agile, loved the woods: she wanted to be a Leafeon. The boy, named Achilles, had always known he wanted to evolve - just not what he wanted to evolve into. Then, one winter, he was looked outside at the snow covering the ground, and he couldn’t look away. Two days later Akira bought him to the Ice rock and he evolved instantly, drawing power from the magical stone just as his sister had done in the Eterna forest.
He bent down at pet each one respectively, excitedly. “You guys ready to go?” He never placed his Pokémon in Pokéballs, it was one of the reasons he never took them to school with him. Each eagerly nodded to him, happy to meet distant relatives it seemed. Akira walked back into his bedroom, which was bare of any type of furniture except a mattress as he had sold everything in his house a few days before. One lone bag sat on the floor and he picked it up, throwing it onto his back. Once he was ready, he walked back to his apartment door and looked around. This place had been his home ever since he was ten and was legally allowed to live alone. Sighing, he opened the door and paused. “Can I help you?” He asked the girl who stood in his way.
She blushed bright red and her green eyes darted to the floor. “My mother sent me. I’m Kari Lavender.” She spoke softly, extending her hand for him to shake.
His eyes widened as he shook her hand. “I wasn’t aware that Mrs. Lavender had any children.”
Kari nodded. “Yes, I have been away in the Johto region for quite a while studying a cave that you might find interesting. I thought we might check it out first…” she paused, “Oh, how rude of me. What I mean to say is I, too, am researching Eevee and it’s evolutions and I wish to join you. That is, if you will let me?”
Akira realized what Mrs. Lavender had meant when she told him others believed him - she was talking about her daughter. “Yes, of course. I would love the company.”
She smiled. “Oh!” Her eyes lightened up and she reached to the two Pokéballs on her belt. “Would you like to see mine?” When Akira nodded excitedly, she called them out, “Go Mercury, Odin!” A male Espeon and female Umbreon came out of their Pokéballs and wee excited to greet Akira’s own Eeveelutions.
Akira bent down to pet them slowly. “They have very nice coats and are in great shape, not over fed or underfed. Nice muscle mass. Very good tempered.” He was saying more to himself then anything as he checked them over. “All in all, you have two very good Pokémon here. Breeding quality I would say.”
“Thank you very much.” She bowed her head with a smile. Now, we really must be going. My Helicopter is waiting on the roof.”
~ ^ ~ ^ ~
After they landed and Kari sent the helicopter away, she turned back to Akira. “This is the cave I was talking about,” She spoke as she pulled back some vines to reveal a small hole in a rock.
“Cave?” Akira asked skeptically. “I don’t think I can fit in there.”
She rolled her eyes. “Just try, you baby. It’s important.”
His Pokémon easily slipped into the hole, followed by Kari, then he sat under peered down at them. He stuck his feet in first and pushed himself. He got stuck form a moment at his shoulders and was panicked. Nymph grabbed him by his ankles with her vines and the group pulled until he went flying in, banging his head as he fell. He grumbled as he leaned forward, rubbing the bump that was forming. “Try it you baby she says, it’s important, she say.” He growled, looking around. “Wize, little help?” Wize walked over to Akira and the man held out a torch for him to light. He sent out a fire ball and instantly, the cave was illuminated. When Akira’s eyes adjusted, he gasped.
He stood and ran his hand over a carving in the stone, “Mecheon.” His breathed out in amazement. “And this one is Poiseon. And over there is Ryueon, and the one right here, this is Doeon. They are all here, even the known evolutions! How did you find this!?” Akira whipped around to look at he, and she smiled brightly.
“Mercury was chasing a Sentret and it dived into the hole. Mercury followed it in, then called me down here. When I told my mother, she told me that you would know what to do about it. That was a year ago.” Kari recalled with a glint in her eyes. “I was excited when I saw this part, but follow me a little deeper.”
She urged him forward, and he followed eagerly, his eyes drifting to the different pictations on the walls of the cave. All of the nine undiscovered Pokémon were just as he remembered them - his heart sped up just thinking about it. “How large is this cave?” He asked after about 20 minutes as he rubbed his chin.
Kari smiled and looked back at him, “It’s pretty big and travels under water for a large - large - portion of it. But…” She suddenly reached out and touched the cave wall in between two Eevee sketches. The wall pushed inward and to the left and another room was revealed. “Now, don’t get to excited.” She reached down and pulled her third Pokéball off her belt. “Go Elise!” An Eevee appeared and shook it’s self, but instantly, it’s gaze drifted to the back of the room, just like Akira’s Eevee evolutions.
Akira stepped forward, squinting his eyes. “There is something…glowing…” He walked forward a few more steps and gasped once more. “Are those…”
Kari nodded. “Evolution stones…I think…But I’m pretty sure they only work with Eevee.” She then crouched down. “Well, do you want to use one of them to evolve?” She asked gently to Elise. Elise looked up at her, a whimsical look on her face. She then nodded and beckoned Akira to step forward so she could carefully look at each stone.
The light hit each stone and they all could see symbols on each on respectively. 16 small stones in total, the first one on the far right looked to be made out of steel and had a silver Mecheon carved into it. The second was deep crimson with a Flareon. Each person looked at the stones in awe down the line, but Elise’s gaze rested on one finally, in the middle. It was a light blue and had a carving of a Hikoeon sketched into it’s surface. The Eevee stepped forward and touched her paw lightly to the surface, and immediately she started to glow. When she stopped changing, A Hikoeon stood before them.
Akira and his Eeveelutions walked over to Elise slowly, staring in aw at her feathered tail, ears, and feet. He man crouched down and ran his hand though her fur and was shocked when he found it was completely made of soft feathers. “This is…amazing…why didn’t you come to me sooner?”
Kari smiled. “I’m not finished with the demonstration. And my mother told me to wait.” She turned to her new Hikoeon. “Now, touch the stone to the right of it.” The stone to the right was for a Ryueon. Nodding, Elise touched the stone.
Akira fell down, unable to stand when Elise once more began to glow white and change. This time, when she stopped, a Ryueon stood proudly. Akira reached out and felt the fur covered scales and stammered, unable to speak. “I…this…this will change everything…but…how is it…I mean, how can and Eevee do this?”
The woman he had just met nodded. “Yes, it is very confusing. Unfortunately, you know you can’t present any of this evidence until you find the answer to that question.” She smiled as Elise touched the Flying stone once more, and changed back into a Hikoeon.
He nodded to her, standing once more. “Yes, you’re right. If I present my findings, the government will take over. They hate being wrong. But, how do I get the funding needed for the research?” He mumbled to himself, rubbing his chin.”
Rolling her eyes, Kari answered his question for him, “Duh. Why do you think my mother wanted me to show you this. She is investing in the research. You have next to unlimited funds to do any research you need.” She said with a smile. “My mother knows you’ll be able to uncover these mysteries.” she then paused, a finger to her chin, “I think that this tunnel might go all the way to the island you wee on with you mother. I think that when an Eevee wants to evolve, they take this tunnel all the way to this chamber and evolve however they wish.” She then shrugged, “It’s just a hypothesis though.”
Akira smiled. “Well then, let’s just find out! We’re going to head down the length of this cave.” His smiled grew and brightened. Finally, he would show the world that he was right.
