Clack.
Matt frowned trying to focus on sifting through the puzzle pieces layed on the floor, sorting through the side pieces and separating them from the middle ones.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
His jaw set. Was he going to just throw them in there like that? He glanced at his blond boyfriend, raising an eyebrow. There was no emotion, no anger, no smile, nothing. So what the hell was eating his ass? “You know… The puzzle never did anything to you.”
Mello’s hand, which had been hovering over the box, stopped momentarily. He turned his head fixing Matt with a steely glare before vehemently hurling the pieces from his hand into the box, causing them to fly everywhere.
“Do it yourself then.” He muttered, getting up from off the floor and stalking out of the room. This had Matt jumping up and following after him, something was definitely wrong. “Hey.” His irritation grew a little when he was ignored causing him to grab Mello’s arm. “Don’t ignore me. What’s wrong?”
Mello finally stopped walking, his hands clenched into tight fists. “You really don’t know?” Matt could have sworn his voice cracked.
“I’m not a mind reader, Mells.” He answered, letting go of Mello’s arm but only because the blond had pulled away from him. “Seriously? What have I done?”
Mello sighed loudly, running his hands through his hair. “Just… forget it. It doesn’t even matter anymore.” He replied, sitting down on the zebra striped couch he’d swiped from Rod Ross’ hideout back when he was in the mafia. “Of course it matters if you’re acting like this.”
“Like what?” Mello asked, eyes narrowing. “Like what Matt? Like I’m upset? Like you forgot something? Please tell me so I can figure out how not to make you feel guilty”
“You don’t have to act sarcastic about it.” Matt muttered, regretting his words as he noticed Mello’s gloved hand almost crushing the chocolate bar which was now in his hand. “Think back, Matt. Just try. What day was it on Monday?”
“February 14th?”
February… 14th. How could he have forgotten? “Finally figured it out?” Mello laughed, though it wasn’t in amusement. “I don’t…” Mello stopped him. “You don’t know how you could have forgotten? I do. Games, Matt. You were playing all the new games I bought you for your birthday.” He sighed again, chewing the edge of his chocolate bar. “I gave you the benefit of the doubt, you know? I handled you missing Monday, but it’s fucking Wednesday Matt. It’s Wednesday and you haven’t bothered to try and make an effort.”
“I’m sorry…” What else was there to say? Mello merely scoffed, shaking his head. “That’s your answer to everything. ‘I’m sorry’, what if sorry doesn’t cut it anymore?”
Walking over Matt sat down, pulling Mello into a hug. The blond resisted at first, thinking about grabbing his gun for a second, but eventually settled down and lay his head on Matt’s shoulder. “You’re a bastard, Matt.” The red head winced but nodded. “Yeah, I know.”
“You’re a bastard… But I do love you.”
“Yeah? I love you too. Happy belated valentines day.”
