Clams for Icchan, Shells for Saeki
AN- I realize that this fic is a bit mild for aff.net, but I couldn't help but post. I see next to nothing of this pair and I think it is cute. Even if it isn't likely...
The sand was cool between Itsuki's toes. He wiggled them a little, enjoying the feeling. He loved this place. The salty sea air. The gentle breeze. The sound of the waves gently kissing the shore. The beach was Itsuki's second home.
Next to him was a bucket filled nearly to the rim with clams he had been digging for since early that morning. He had given up on that task however when he stumbled upon some of the prettiest shells he had ever seen. After searching a bit longer, he had found five and a piece of fishing wire, and he settled down, bucket beside him, shells in his lap and set to work fashioning his new found treasures into a necklace.
As he worked, he wondered where his team mates were. He had a habit of losing them in favor of the clams, but he couldn't help it. Clam digging was one of his favorite past times. Besides playing tennis with his second family of course.
His thoughts traveled to Saeki and he blushed a little. Sae-san was so cool, Itsuki couldn't help but feel awed by his presence. Those feelings only grew as more time passed and they got to know each other more. But Sae-san would never look at Itsuki as more than a good friend.
Itsuki held up a shell, the light reflecting a prism of color, and he sighed. He could never be angry with Sae-san though. Nope. Never.
He continued his task, securing the last shell in place. Then he held up the string to admire his handiwork. Each shell cast a little rainbow as the light hit them, and Itsuki smiled a little. Maybe he'd give it to Sae-san.
"I-cchaaaaaaan!"
Speaking of Sae-san...
Itsuki turned his head in the direction of his friend's voice. The others were there as well. He stood, clutching the necklace in one hand and his pale in the other, and ran to catch up with his team.
"Yo! Where ya been, Icchan?" Kurobane asked.
"He was using his muscles to dig for mussels," Amane snorted in laughter at his own pun.
Kurobane grabbed him in a headlock, "Not funny Davide!"
Ryou turned the attention away from the pair and their playful banter. "We're going for burgers. Kentarou's treat."
Kentarou's over sized mouth dropped open. "Whaaaaaat!?"
Ryou just shrugged matter-of-factly. "It's a captain's duty to keep his team happy."
"But! But! But!"
Saeki placed a hand on the freshman's shoulder. "He's kidding Kentarou."
Itsuki just smiled at his friends' antics, but when Saeki spoke, he felt a little stab of pain. The necklace would be silly to give to Sae-san. Holding the trinket behind him, he let it slip from his fingers to drop with a tiny clink to the sand below. He tried to mask the sudden hurt with a smile.
Saeki's sharp eye caught the movement and Itsuki's sudden change in mood as well as the brunette's attempt to hide said change. What could be wrong? He dared not ask aloud. He couldn't embarrass the poor boy in front of everyone.
As the others headed off, debating the topic of where to obtain food, Saeki fell behind. He examined the spot where Itsuki was just standing and his eyes caught the glitter of the five little shells held together by a strand of old fishing wire. He knelt, scooping it up, cradling it in his hands as if it were a fragile baby bird, and an understanding hit him. All those times when Itsuki would smile despite the small flicker of pain in those already sad brown eyes. Saeki realized that THAT gaze was only ever directed at HIM.
He felt a little sting of guilt and pity. He wasn't sure if he could ever see Itsuki as more than just a friend. But he was still a friend, and that friend's feeling were on the line. The only thing Saeki could do for the time being was to accept the gift that Itsuki had taken the time to make.
He smiled and tied the string around his neck, rising to his feet to catch the retreating figures. Once he did, he threw an arm over Itsuki's shoulder. They would have to talk seriously later. Right now, they were good friends going for a bite to eat.
"They decided yet?"
"No..."
Itsuki glanced at Saeki and was surprised to see five sparkling, rainbow colored shells sparkling against Saeki's sky blue tank top. Sae-san liked the gift after all. Itsuki wasn't sure what was going through his friend's mind, but he guessed this would do for now. He'd enjoy whatever moments he could. If something more came his way, that would be great. If not, well then that would be okay too.
Itsuki smiled a bit. Any moments with Sae-san would be treasured.
Always.
