The Other Successor

A/N: This is my first fanfiction to post on this site. I've taken down my original fiction but plan to put them back up asap. I've always been a fan of Death Note and it's been a while since I've seen the show but I wanted to write a story on it during my spare time away from studying. Because there are original characters in this story I placed this under alternate universe. Anyway I hope you enjoy the prologue. :)

Winchester, England

It had been six years since the devastating news came back to Wammy’s house. Someone she’d known pretty much all of her life as a father and someone she’d grown to love as a brother were dead. Ironically, they both died on the same day due to heart attacks. The events that led up to the mysterious murders were peculiar, thus raising her suspicions that the one person responsible for the killings was none other than the one known as ‘kira’. Whoever he or she may be was maniacal and a true mastermind behind the art of assassination, because for one, it was highly unexpected and two, there was no evidence linking anyone to the crime. There weren’t any doubts that it was kira’s doing, but the main question about kira’s identity was still unsolved and that didn’t sit right with her.

She sat on her bed, Indian style, and looked out the window as the rain crashed onto the ground. She counted the rain drops and contemplated a plan on how she was going to get involved in the investigation. Mello and Near were already in Japan working on the kira case together. Scoffing at the idea, she brushed her jeans off then continued to count the raindrops as they continued to fall from the dark clouds. She wasn’t necessarily upset that she wasn’t chosen to success L regardless of the fact he considered her his protégé, even though he never told her that aloud. She couldn’t believe the two who were chosen to success and that appalled her.

If they were any good they would’ve found him by now, she thought to herself. But then again, if L failed then there was no way those two would succeed. Flipping her long, raven black locks back and placed her palm on the cold window. She remembered speaking to Near some time ago, and he promised her she could join the SPK and help solve the case. Unfortunately, the call he promised to make to her never came thus causing her resentment of him to increase. As far as Mello was concerned, she hadn’t spoken to the jackass in ages and preferred it that way but had a feeling they would cross paths again someday.

She jumped when the telephone sitting on one of the dressers in the room began to ring, and she got out of her comfortable position on the bed and went to answer.

“Hello,” she said into the speaker and waited patiently for the caller on the other end to speak. She heard a familiar voice say to her in a cool tone, “I know you’ve been expecting my call. Sorry to have you waiting, it’s just things have been hectic lately.”

She rolled her eyes and shifted the phone to her other ear and said, “Yeah, whatever. So what has been happening lately?”

“I can only tell you in person. I’m flying you out tomorrow evening. Your plane ticket has already been paid for plus your housing and board for when you arrive.”

“Are you serious? Or are you bullshitting me again?” she asked skeptically.

She heard him sigh heavily on the other end then told her incredulously, “Yes, I’m serious. Would I be joking about matters this serious?”

“I don’t know, would you?”

He groaned then growled lightly, “Would you stop with the supercilious attitude and cooperate. I thought you wanted to help out.”

“I do, but only if I’m needed,” she told him slyly.

He chuckled, “Well of course. I could always use your talents and your knowledge of modern technology will be a definite asset to the team.”

“How so?”

“We’ll discuss all of that over dinner tomorrow night. I need you to pack your things and let the caretaker know, you’ll be leaving the orphanage.”

“What if she doesn’t let me leave?”

He scoffed, “You don’t have to give her any details, just tell her Near sent for you and that I’ll be seeing about you from now on.”

“Well, I’ll give it a shot. But what if she still refuses to let me go?”

He laughed defiantly, “Trust me, she will. I’ll see you tomorrow night,” then the call is disconnected and she’s listening to the dial tone before hanging up and placing it on the charger.

She went over to her bed then pulled her suitcase from underneath it. She couldn’t believe the bastard actually sent for her. It was the smartest thing he’s done throughout the time he’s been in charge of the SPK. She thought it was strange how he abruptly demanded her to be flown out immediately especially after not speaking to her for several months. Whatever his motives were didn’t matter to her at the moment. All she was concerned with was tracking down kira and avenging both Watari and L's deaths.

A/N: so this was just to get things started I also have a much lighter version of this at Fanfiction.net. This is my first Death Note story and would appreciate any feedback you have to give me.
