“So Furinkan huh?” The petite redhead looked at the small high school building she could see on the horizon. They were close and frankly, she wasn't so happy about going to a co-ed school so much time at a girls school, but at least it didn't look like a prison.
“Yeah... Furinkan's not that bad,” Akane Tendo trudged along the road with her briefcase book bag in her hand. The other hand was placed in her long hair, flipping through the strands since they were now passing Dr. Ono Tofu's clinic... sadly he wasn't in the front like he usually was. This mildly upset Akane, but what could she do?
“There are actually some nice people there so don't worry about it. This one guy, Ryoga, is a sweetie!”
Ranko Saotome jumped off from the fence she was clumsily balancing on. “Ryoga... as in Ryoga Hibiki?”
“Yeah... you know him?” Akane asked. “I heard he was in China too for a while.”
Ranko shook her head. “No, but I've heard of him from Ranma. I think they were best friends in middle school or something.”
“Hmm... Ryoga's never mentioned Ranma,” Akane continued walking, looking innocently in front of her, though her smile turned quickly into a frown as she heard Ranko's brother behind them.
“Wait up!” Ranma Saotome came running up to them on the fence with his briefcase book bag over his shoulder. “Not cool tomboy.”
“Whatever...” Akane rolled her eyes. “We needed some girl time, you dolt.”
Akane and Ranma continued arguing as if she wasn't there. She was used to being ignored. It happened the day before when they first introduced themselves to the Tendos. Meek little Ranko and the friendship she had sparked with the Tendo girls, was pushed aside in lieu of the scandal over Ranma and his gender-bending curse.
“Come on you two... we have to get to class.”
“Whatever nerd!” Ranma lightly punched his sister on the arm and flashed a crooked smile, letting her know that he was joking.
“So, you must be the new students,” The teacher looked them over for a bit before returning to writing on the board and mumbling something about troublemakers under his breath.
“Yes sir, Ranko Saotome and--”
“Ranma...” Ryoga, who had been sitting near the front, glared at the boy beside Ranko and Akane. His hands were balled up in tight fists and it looked as though he was about to break the table.
“Ryoga... long time no see!” Ranma waved at him, oblivious to the fact that Ryoga probably wanted to hurt him right now.
'So this is Ryoga' Ranko thought, 'He's kind of cute' She had a thing for guys in uniform, maybe it was the fact that her father had enrolled her in an all girls school during her middle school days or the fact that his uniform was unbuttoned showing the rather tight and thin white shirt underneath.
The teacher cleared his throat, sensing that there would be some mischief soon if he didn't do something. “Ranko and Ranma, welcome. You can take your seats.”
“Come on Ranko, you're sitting by me,” Akane grabbed her hand, dragging Ranko to a seat between her and Ryoga. Ranma followed closely behind, opting for a seat by two slackers whom he would later find out to be Hiroshi and Daisuke.
“Now that the introductions are over--” The teacher cleared his throat once again and was about to continue, until the door was roughly pulled off of its hinges. “What the hell?”
“I shall order my trusty servant to fix that for you... but now I must...” Upperclassman Tatewaki Kuno strode up to the desk occupied by Akane. “Become acquainted with our fair new student.”
Akane rolled her eyes and murmured something to Ranko, but before she could catch what the girl had said, Akane's hands were roughly snatched up in Tatewaki's hands.
“My lovely Akane, you must introduce me to the blossoming flower sitting to your right.”
“Um... my name is--”
Akane vigorously shook her head; eyes wide and full of... fear?
“No matter... I shall call you...” he let go of Akane's hands and reached for Ranko's, lightly caressing the tops with his thumbs. “Pigtailed girl... what say you my sweet?”
“Um,” Ranko looked around the room feeling the tons of eyes on her and Kuno. It was uneasy. “I think that you should...”
“Should what my sweet?” Kuno was now overstepping his bounds for he started caressing her cheek and pulled her to him.
“Hey... leave my sister alone!” Ranma started. He was about to give him a piece of his mind, but remembered that Ranko told him to make a good impression on the first day.
“Excuse me, but you're invading my personal space,” she tried pushing him off, but he seemed to be stuck on her like white on rice. If he didn't get off now, she would have no choice but to break her first rule of no fighting in school.
“Oh my pigtailed girl... let us away and fly off into the sunset. Of course Akane-chan may come as well!”
“Like hell I am...” she crossed her arms over her chest, happy that Kuno had found another victim to lavish with his “love”, but feeling somewhat guilty that it was her new friend.
“I said get the fuck off!” Ranko pulled her hand back, getting ready for the hardest punch she had ever given in her life. She swore that she could hear his jaw breaking, as well as some of her fingers, as her fist connected with his face, sending him careening out of the window and past a few shocked students.
The class was silent for a moment. Ranko was livid. Sure, she was hit on by men before... but to have class interrupted to BE hit on and be under the gaze of millions – well not millions, but it felt like it – of her peers? That was just rude and embarrassing.
“You okay sis?” Ranma had never seen Ranko so angry, and she had to be to punch that hard. She was generally calm and collected even in fighting, never one for confrontation in important public places, and to her, school was one of the most important of all.
“Of course...” she held her head high and sat down with her hands clasped together over her desk.
“You know,” Akane started to whisper. “He will be back.”
“And I'll be ready for him,” Ranko pulled out her notebook and pencil box, arranging them all neatly on her desk and awaiting the lesson.
“Dude...” Hiroshi held his hand over his heart, “I think I'm in love...”
Ranma just punched him on the shoulder, none to lightly, and made and 'I'm watching you' gesture with his hands letting Hiroshi know that he wouldn't be let anywhere near Ranko on his watch.
'Hmmm... so this is Ranma's sister? She looks different with the nerd glasses.' Ryoga sat quietly in his seat, plotting his revenge against not one Saotome... but the other as well.
Meet me outside after school
–Ryoga
“Hmm... that's odd,” Ranko sat underneath a large tree in Furinkan High's yard while Ranma stood in the center of the yard, facing the school doors, and reading Ryoga's note. “He wasn't speaking to you in class...”
“Do you think he's...”
“He's what?”
“In love with me?” Ranma gasped and threw the note on the ground, looking at it as if it were a snake that just tried to bite him.
“E-excuse me?” Ranko almost choked on the rice she was eating. She had to save her bento from lunch today since she spent most of it running away from, and occasionally punting, Kuno. “You're so stupid Ranma. Besides, I don't think the look he gave you today was one of somebody in love with you,” she remembered how he was always glaring at Ranma and she could feel a malicious aura emanating from him. What unnerved her the most was that it was sometimes directed toward her, though she couldn't think of anything she had done to him.
Akane came jogging toward them and took a seat near Ranko after putting down her briefcase book bag to keep her dress from getting dirty, “Sorry... Yuka and Sayuri kept me after class. Something about their boyfriends... their guys are such creeps,” she shot Ranma a look, hoping he'd take the hint that she didn't like him, but he just ignored it.
“Finally Ranma...”
“What?” Ranma turned away from the girls and looked at another tree further away from the school's entrance. Ryoga stood there with his arms crossed over his chest, his uniform jacket thrown on the ground and the heavy red and black umbrella always near his desk lying near the base of the tree. “Ryoga, why did you send me this note?”
“Why, to fight... you didn't forget our rivalry did you?”
“Rivalry?” Ranma looked at him as though Ryoga were crazy. “Looney as always, huh?”
“Shut it, Ranma... this ends now!” Ryoga got into a fighting stance, letting Ranma know that he was completely serious.
“I don't want to fight you Ryoga,” Ranma said as he got into his own fighting stance, “But I will if I have to.”
“Such a corny line,” Akane whispered.
“Agreed,” Ranko nodded her head and continued watching the beginnings of their fight.
“You have humiliated me for the last time,” Ryoga yelled and reached up toward his head, grasping his orange and black bandana. “This is for the bread!” he pulled the bandana from his head and it became as stiff and razor sharp as a knife. He then threw it like a ninja star toward Ranma's head, growling as the agile boy somersaulted out of the way.
“The bread?! Are you fucking serious?” he dodged another of his deadly bandanas. “You're gonna kill me for some stupid bread?”
“Not kill... just send you to the hospital,” he grabbed the heavy umbrella, swinging it left and right trying to hit Ranma, but he was too quick. “Damnit... stand still bastard!”
“Hmm... this is getting good!” Ranko started eating the contents of her bento much faster. She didn't want to miss anything of the fight due to having to eat.
“As if Ryoga...” Ranma sent a kick toward his head, only to fall back as the umbrella blocked him. It was as if he were kicking a steel wall. 'Damn, Ryoga must be strong to carry that'
Another movement towards his head, and Ranma was yet again dodging one of Ryoga's bandanas... he was really getting sick of them. How many bandana's did Ryoga wear anyway?
“And that is for skipping out on our duel.”
“Duel?” Ranko looked at Akane, her bento was all finished and sitting beside her.
“Yeah, I think he said duel.”
“Who is he, some 17th century military officer?”
“I wasn't aware you were waiting for me to kick your ass!” Ranma landed on the ground and ran with lightening speed toward to the school. If it was bread he wanted, then he'd get bread.
“Hmm...” Ryoga smiled evilly and wielded the umbrella as if it weighed nothing. “Seems like your brother's a coward!” he yelled at Ranko.
“I've got your coward right here!” Ranma re-emerged from the school building with an armful of bread and began throwing them at Ryoga, only to have him bat them away with his umbrella.
“Rye... pumpernickel... french... I've got all the bread I ever took from you. Take your pick!”
“You think this is about bread Ranma!” he yelled, batting away the last of the bread.
“I think he did say it was about bread...” Akane started. “Nabiki!”
“Yep sis,” Nabiki appeared out of nowhere, brandishing a tape recorder and pressing play. 'You have humiliated me for the last time... this is for the bread!'
“I thought so... thank you Nabiki,” said Ranko.
“Yes... a little something for your troubles,” Akane reached into her book bag and procured one yen, handing it to her sister.
“One yen sis... seriously?” Nabiki grabbed the yen and grumbled all the way to wherever she was.
“You two shut up!” Ryoga barked. He then pointed at Ranko, who gulped. “You're next...”
“Um... and you said this was the guy who was a sweetie?”
“Well, he was before you two came.”
“Leave my sis out of this... your fight's with me.”
“Oh really?” he threw another one of his bandanas.
“Enough with the damn bandanas!”
“That's for Jusenkyo... I know you sent her to knock me into one of the springs.”
“What?” Ranma was stunned, too stunned in fact that he almost didn't dodge. He eventually did, but it was too slow and gave Ryoga ample time to smash a crater where Ranma was standing, sending Ranma staggering on his feet. It was just enough time to cat Ranma off guard and grab him by the throat. “Yes... Jusenkyo. It's because you skipped out on our fight that I went searching for you and ended up there.”
“Fine... it was my fault... leave her,” he coughed, “Out of this.”
“How sweet... you're trying to protect her... such a nice brother,” Ryoga spat in his face, then suddenly started falling to his knees; eyes wide.
“Leave my brother alone!” Ranko stood over his prone body, her hands up where his neck used to be. She had pressed a pressure point, knocking him out. “You okay Ranma?”
“Barely...” Ranma coughed and pried the rest of Ryoga's fingers off of his neck.
“You know,” she smiled then said in a voice that was an uncanny imitation of their father, Genma, “You need to train harder, m'boy.”
“Very funny...” he rolled his eyes, “Let's not tell him about this.”
“Ranma... are you okay?” Akane ran from the tree she was sitting at; she was clearly worried.
“Woah... people are gonna think that you actually care.”
“Well...” she held her head high and humphed. “I don't care... I just thought Ranko would be worried about you.”
“Right, Akane,” Ranko patted her friend on the back and led Ranma to the tree to get their stuff. “Let's all go home.”
I know, I have no business writing a new story when I have at least three stories I have to finish... but I just keep getting ideas for new ones. Sorry.
Anyway, this is a what-if if you haven't figured. What if Ranma had a sister. What if Ryoga was at Furinkan and already knew Akane. Etc.
I really like Ranma-chan/Ryoga. I'm aware that Ranma-chan is Ranma... but I don't really like yaoi. Sorry for those of you who do. There's nothing wrong with it, I read it sometimes... but it's not my favorite. Pairings will be Ranko/Ryoga, a little Ranma/Akane, and maybe Mousse/Ranko because I like that pairing too.
Hope you all enjoy this story. I haven't read Ranma in a while so things might not completely follow the manga.
