Disclaimer: I do not own the series Fairy Tail, nor its characters. They are property of their respective owners. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: Note that these are drabbles, which, by definition, are traditionally meant to be about 100 words in length. Mine are longer, but still too short to be called a oneshot or even a ficlet, really. So please, no reviews saying there isn't enough detail and content, as I've seen on other drabbles in the past.
If you'd like to prompt me, simply fill in the form at the start of each drabble (minus the word count, obviously) and send it to my e-mail, which can be found on my profile, and I'll post it as soon as it's written. Please, please, fill in the entire form. Very important. Otherwise, enjoy!

Patrons at one of Magnolia's rougher, seedier taverns kept their distance from the monster in the corner. They knew him by name and reputation, and today, he looked even scarier than usual. With fists clenched on top of the wooden table and red eyes all but boring a hole through it, no one dared approach the famous mage for fear of becoming his punching bag.
It was a smart decision for a bunch who were generally pretty bad at that kind of thing. But how much of a fool did you have to be to go near an angry dragon?
In truth, he wasn't angry, but like hell he was telling anyone that. Had he been angry, he would have found his punching bag already. No, Black Steel Gajeel wasn't angry; he was sulking.
The one who was angry was that puzzling bookworm, Levy McGarden. And the one she was angry at was him.
He didn't know why it bothered him so much. It wasn't like he ever cared what anyone thought of his actions. He'd lived on the outskirts for so long it wasn't just his body that was covered in thick armour; insults and opinions bounced off harmlessly.
But when that tiny little girl had given him that look, he'd felt it like a sucker punch.
It was Salamander's fault. He couldn't even remember what the hell they'd been arguing about, but that bastard had thrown the first punch. They'd been ignored at first - just another day at Fairy Tail - but eventually, the fight spread like Natsu's flames as, one by one, other guild members got burned or pounded by steel and joined in the fray. It had even spread into the quiet corner where Levy had been reading.
The two of them had travelled across the length of the hall, and somehow, a strike he'd meant to hit the Salamander had instead landed across the big book the little mage had in front of her. It was a big, thick tome (filled with an old language made up of strange characters he couldn't even recognise, let alone read), so it had managed to survive complete destruction, but a fair amount of the pages had been torn and the rest dented.
Levy shooting up from her chair, toppling it over, caused a ripple effect that stopped the ruckus. Everyone, including Gajeel, froze as they were and watched as she gathered up her books (because she never seemed to just have one with her, he'd realised) and the damaged pages.
Then she'd whirled on him. But she hadn't said a damn word, and somehow, that made it worse. She'd just glared at him and pointed - and with her hands full, she'd only been able to use her little finger. Despite that, the message had been clear: he was neck deep in shit. Like it was the fucking Pinkie of Doom or something, he couldn't get it out of his head.
Salamander had given him a pitying look like it was Erza who was pissed at him. That little cheerleader, Lucy, had had the gall to give him advice! Make a nice gesture, she'd said. Like hell!
He'd been so incensed, he'd snapped at them all to leave him the hell alone and stomped out of Fairy Tail to make his way here. Why the hell should he have to make up with Levy? It was Salamander's fault, not his!
Besides, he had no idea what he could do. That book was damn old. It wasn't like he could stroll down the street and find it in a bookshop. So what the hell was he meant to do?
Aggravated, he swept a hand through his black mane. What kind of gestures did girls like? He had enough jewels to buy her a present, but the only thing he knew of that she liked was... books. And if there was a book in print that she didn't have already, he'd eat the table.
He stood up and tossed a handful of jewels on the table, leaving without a backwards glance, missing the collective sigh of relief as he left, focused as he was on his predicament. He had no idea what he could get her. He just didn't buy presents for girls - or anyone, for that matter - because it was a load of crap. His way of thinking was, if you had something to say, just damn well say it.
And that was exactly what he should be doing, he thought grimly. Not listening to that damn cheerleader. He just had to find the little bookworm and say what needed to be said.
He finally found her sitting under the Solar Tree in South Gate Park. He stood over her to get her attention, but even though his shadow fell over her book, she didn't acknowledge him.
Figuring he shouldn't demand she pay attention to him and dig any deeper into his hole, he sat down next to her instead. Still, she didn't look at him.
"Hey..." he bega gruffly, but Levy just casually turned a page like he wasn't even there. He ground his teeth in frustration. How was he meant to say he was sorry if she wouldn't even look at him? Was Lucy right and he needed a present after all?
Completely out of his depth, he looked around, hoping for some kind of inspiration. And there, right in front of him, he found it. A single flower stuck out of the grass, its petals delicate and as blue as Levy's hair.
Before he could think about it too much and talk himself out of the idea, he broke the stem and held it out in front of her face while staring determinedly across the park and away from her. There were a few tense moments of silence in which he came dangerously close to grinding the flower into dust and swearing off ever giving another present in his life, and then he felt it gently tugged from between his fingers. His arm dropped uselessly and he hunched his shoulders defensively as he listened to her soft inhale as she smelt it, but he still didn't look around.
"It smells beautiful," she finally said. He could hear the smile in her voice.
Embarrassment whipped through him so fast and so unexpectedly, it was almost like a physical blow. To his horror, he felt his cheeks warm as a blush spread across them.
Being a clever and observant girl, Levy McGarden wasn't about to miss something like that.
"Gajeel... are you embarrassed?" she asked curiously, sounding a tad amused as well.
The Dragon Slayer shot to his feet. "Shut up!" he snapped. "I'm not embarrassed!"
He turned and stomped away from her, shoulders hunching ever further, making a mental note never to give flowers to a girl ever again. Why couldn't she just accept it without poking fun at how uncomfortable he was? No more gifts or apologies for Levy McGarden.
But at least she wasn't mad at him anymore.

A/N: Wow, not only is this my first attempt at anything Fairy Tail, it's also my first het pairing. xD So two big milestones in one here.
I have to say, though, I do love this pairing to death and writing Gajeel was so fun. I need to work on Levy's character more before I feel comfortable writing it properly, which means watching more Fairy Tail. Oh, the suffering I go through for my writing. xD
